Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American author, best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic John Carter, although he produced works in many genres.
Fun fiction read, and in a lot of ways a patriarchal work from which many modern sci-fi franchises can trace some linage. It predates Star Wars, Star Trek, lord of the rings, avatar and Lewis’ space trilogy and yet all these later works have elements that were first present in the John Carter series.
The story itself is an enjoyable action novel. John Carter is a charismatic and conviction-driven protagonist who’s internal dialogue is almost as entertaining as his over the top exploits of bravado and valor. Imagine Leonidas, John wick, and Wyatt Earp decided to adopt and co-raise a child, that child could be John Carter. It’s not Dickens, but I’m here for what it is.
Took a bit to get into the writing style. When I did it was quite a fun read. Interesting to see where Star Wars, Dune, and Total Recall pulled ideas from.
