Sometimes you have to bend the rules to get what you want.
Piper Adams has one month to find a husband, and get a green card, or be kicked out of the country just when her chain of food trucks selling Australian style pies is about to start making some serious money.
Aaron is an ambitious lawyer keen to make partner but his Boston law firm only promotes lawyers who are married.
A marriage of convenience could solve both their problems if they keep it strictly business but convincing everyone else that this is true love while trying to convince themselves that it isn’t is a sure recipe for trouble. All the kissing and touching sets the heat rising faster than the pies in Piper’s kitchen.

This is a fantastic novella and exactly the right size for the story being told. I loved Piper from the very start and Aaron wasn't far behind in my affection. It's a straight-forward Marriage of Convenience story, but I find I'm completely content with that. The best part of this is that McDonell did an incredible job with what could have easily been a heaping helping of negative motivation* and showed the affirmative aspects that made it deeper, yes, but more importantly made it move story along instead of simply breaking it right down. If you're interested, she made it so that
Anyway, a full five stars for a wonderful hour or two with people I really liked spending time with.
A note about Chaste: There is sex, at the very end, but it isn't on-screen. So it isn't "chaste" in a purist, absolute sense, but it is in my own, personal sense so I thought it worth noting the potential distinction.
* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.
A romance reader recommended this novel, and because it was an indie author, especially one from Australia, of course I had to try it.
I was glad I did! The novel was short--more of a novella--and the story the tried and true arranged marriage, which can be so much fun in the right hands. These were the right hands! I particularly loved Piper, the Australian girl who's got a successful food truck business going with pies, and who needs a way to stay in this country. So her friend Cherie, who is a bit of a matchmaker, arranges a marriage for her.
We know what's going to happen, it's how it happens that makes the story. There are fun characters, good female friendships, great banter, an excellent sense of what it's like to run your own business, and of course the chemistry between Piper and Aaron, who has his own issues.
I had to laugh at some of the Australian slang spoken by Americans, and I tripped over some copyediting issues, plus there wasn't much of a sense of place--but that's one of the issues with indies. Good copyediting is often beyond the budget of authors trying to get their name out there. The romance itself was awesome, and if McDowell writes any based in Australia I will buy them in a heartbeat.
Are you a fan of arranged marriage novels ? What about ones that start off as shams but later fall into the category of something real and true ? After reading The Academic Bride, I was on a groove with wanting almost like Marriage broker novels and by chance I found one on my Kindle - Any Way You Slice It which by the way I love the title :) . In Any Way You Slice it we meet Australian Piper who has been living in the States and has started an amazing Pie Food Truck business that is on it's way to booming level, when she gets some bad news - her visa is about to expire and unless a miracle can happen. She has one month before she is deported back to Australia and can kiss her business Aussie Pie Trucks goodbye. Enter her best friend with a clever idea , she can pretend to marry her cousin Aaron who is a lawyer as he is in a bit of a dilemma as in order to make Partner in his law firm he needs to brush up his skills and look like he has settled down as partners are supposed to be responsible and bachelors are far from the ideal pick. This way both of them win , but what happens when the line starts to get blurred from fake marriage to real feelings ? Can they both see where the new reality begins or will they think the other is playing a game nad really good at the charade ? Will Piper and Aaron realise before it's too late that they actually love one another ? A book that if you loved the movie The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds you will be sure to enjoy reading. Find out in Any Way You Slice It by Australian authoress Monique McDonnell.
It was okay. I didn't particularly like how Piper was hung up on the whole "it's not real because you don't love me" thing for pretty much the entire story. Aaron was a much more rational individual and I'm kinda crushing on him.
This is a short story. It took me a couple hours to read. I like to read about people with high morals, so the fact that the love interest was sleeping with a married person kinda shot the whole thing in the foot for me. It was redeemed by the fact that I really felt like these two fell in love and maybe they can last. It would be nice to think. I also think it would take a lot more time for two people as broken as these two to believe in each other, maybe that comes later. Sex: Lost of reference to it. Lots of flirting. Sex with no detail. Drugs: Lots of alcohol. Language: A couple of swear words Sh.... and some religious words used as swear words.
I loved this fun little chick lit novella. I related to Piper and enjoyed the little bits of Australia that made it into the book. All the talk of meat pies made me hungry, and I ended up serving them for dinner the day after I finished reading this.
The marriage of convenience isn't something I've read often and I liked the way Monique handled it. I was egging Piper on to recognise her feelings and take a risk. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next. Thank goodness book 2 and 3 are out and I don't have to wait.
Piper needed to get married to stay in America and Aaron needed a wife in order to make partner in the law firm. They agreed to have a marriage of convenience, strictly platonic. He did not believe in love, however, she did believe. A delightful sweet story proving opposites do attract. This the first book I have read of Monique McDonell's and she did an excellent job of telling a great story. I would like to read more of her books. I recommend.
This was my first exposure to this author, and I must say I liked the little "bite" of her work that I got!
The story was fairly short, and felt a little bit rushed because of it. Aaron's morals were a bit questionable, but I really liked Piper overall. Their romance, while unconventional, was still believable. To me, where this book shone was in its supporting characters. I really wanted to know more about them, and I hope they are in other books of the series!
This was a very good start to the series, and I hope to read more soon!
A fun, heartwarming, second chance at love, intriguing series that's just perfect to spend the time reading. Best sequentially, but not necessary.
Any Way You Slice It #1 - Wish I could have read these books in order, but it doesn't matter. A well thought out romance with realistic dialog and characters and an interesting, entertaining plot. Any more would be spoilers. This series is more substantial than a lot of this genre.
Any Way You Fight It #3 - Second chance at love. Another well written, funny romance with interesting characters and an entertaining plot. I can't say more or it would be spoilers. I enjoyed reading this series.
Any Way You Want It #5 - If you enjoy S. Claflin and T. Pedersen, you'll love McDonell, too! It's the first chapter and you're already laughing and rootin' for the good guys. A well written, fun-filled romance, this time with Chloe and Moose. My second story by this author and now I want to read them all. Moose is my favorite male character.
Any Way You Build It #6 - A well-written, fun, exciting, clean romance. I had to finish it in two sittings; work, a four-letter word, interrupted me. It was complete, but I believe there's more to the story. This is the first story I've read by this author, but I've got another one ready to go from Amazon. I asked the author if I could review this book.
Any Way You Spin It #7 - Another second chance. Another well written, heartwarming romance with interesting characters and a realistic plot. None of these books are repeats, but interesting, fun books on their own, just a piece of a larger picture.
Any Way You Like It #8 - Another heartwarming, humorous, intriguing second chance romance in one of my favorite places with some of my favorite characters. This complete series is well written with well developed characters with realistic dialog and no stupid formulas, along with interesting and intriguing storylines. While complete with humor and bad guys, these books are substantial pieces, not fluffy junk. This is my second favorite, which is actually hard to decide on since all the books are favorites! There's also a preview of the book, Something of a Spark.
I have had this book sitting on my kindle for almost a year and can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read a book by Monique McDonell before this. This book grabbed me from the very start even though it’s the predictable married of convenience it is the journey the author takes us on that had me hooked. The characters where great and believable and the fact that the main female was an Aussie was great this Aussie reader. It's a light-hearted, fun, flirty, cute fast-paced story and a sweet clean rom-com that I would recommend any romance reader. Piper has one month to marry or give up her thriving business to return to Australia as her visa is about to run out. Piper is a savvy businesswoman, strong and independent, sweet, caring and has always dreamed of marrying for love. Her friend Cherie set her us with her cousin in the attempt to find her a marriage of convenience to solve her visa problem. Aaron is a lawyer striving to become a partner but to do that he needs a wife and to stop sleeping with a married woman. He does not believe in love but the more time he spends with Piper the more he does not agree with her plans for fake marriage with no physical contact. But with each kiss how will they both keep things on the staying as planned. Will they both get what they want out of this fake marriage or will they both be surprised with more?
I enjoyed this novella from beginning to end. It was cute, sweet, and funny. I loved both characters and the author did a good job with humor that wasn't too snarky nor clownish. The novella is told in first person pov, and what I enjoyed most was the heroine's dry commentary.
Here are two examples that made me chuckle:
They're getting married to avoid her deportation and to advance his career. Even though they're not having sex, they have to put on some obvious public displays of affection to make it believable to family and co-workers. After being "caught" canoodling on his job, she says,
“I must say, for a woman who isn’t getting any, I’m starting to feel like quite the tramp.” (loc 574 kindle)
In one scene his mother disapproves and storms out. The heroine narrates:
"She turned on her heel and clacked down the stairs. It wasn't a happy walk. Oh well, if only one of us could be happy, I was alright with it being me."
(Loc 772 kindle)
Don't hesitate to read this for a quick enjoyable few hours.
Edited to add: I would actually give this 4 1/2 stars overall (just a couple editing errors) and 5 full stars for enjoyment.
'Any Way You Slice It' is my first novel by Monique McDonell, but it certainly won't be my last. This tasty, modern-day twist on the marriage of convenience trope is a funny and uplifting story set in New York. It pairs Piper, an Australian in need of a green card so that she can keep running the business she has established, with Aaron, an American lawyer in need of a wife so that he can get promotion within the law firm he works for. Throw in a friend with a warm and fiery Italian family and some combustible (if occasionally unwanted) chemistry and you have a story that works its way from 'I must' to 'I do'. And there is more than just delicious pie on offer to keep you drooling. There are seven more books in the series. Yes, seven! I do love a good rom-com series.
PS: Don't you just love the cover. I'm going to call the background colour teal and challenge any happy soul to gaze upon it and NOT turn to the first page.
Cute, sweet, arranged marriage novella. Read in a little over an hour. It does what a novella should do, offers a short story that leaves me with a Happily Ever After and feeling content. The two lead characters need to be married to business reasons. She’s about to get deported just when her business is taking off. He needs to be married to become a partner in the law firm he works at. The female lead is a strong, independent business woman. The male lead (after me not liking him very much because he is a douche sleeping around with a married woman) turns out to be a really sweet, attentive, caring man. While I almost put the book down after being introduced to the male character, the author’s writing had me continuing and I’m glad I did. It’s a fun, light read.
I really enjoyed Any Way You Slice It, my first from Australian author Monique McDonell. Although it was only a novella, I felt the author did justice to the characters Aussie Piper, the successful owner of a multi-truck pie business and sexy Aaron, a single attorney needing a wife in order to get a promotion in his firm. Their matchmaker friend is scripted perfectly too. It's a delicious, fun, flirty, but clean rom-com that I know many will enjoy. And I'm not just talking about the pie! I plan to enjoy the next seven books in her series. I know I won't be disappointed and you won't be either!!!
This was a very entertaining story even though the plot wasn't new. Piper and Aaron are both in need of a spouse so an arranged marriage seems like the logical answer to both their problems. Aaron needs to get married so he can inherit his trust fund and Piper needs to marry so she can get a green card and stay in the States. They didn't plan on falling in love.
The arranged marriage trope is one of my favorites and I really liked the characters in this one. I breezed through it in a couple of hours. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
That is what this was suppose to be. Piper followed a boyfriend from Australia to the U.S. Because she needed a new start, but he cheated on her. She has started her own successful food truck business but her VISA it about to run out. Her friend Cherie offers her coins Aaron to help. They meet and get along. She has doubts, he doesn't just before. They fly to Vegas, but he admits he is in love.
This second book by Monique McDonnell, is just as funny, cute, and HEA, too. Maybe I am getting a little sappy in my age,. But dog gonna it. I love her stories. Some parts in Piper's story, I really wanted her to go off. But glad that she did not. Thank you Monique, for this.
A story of two people marrying each other. Piper needs to stay America and Aaron wants to move on up in the law firm. They are set up by Cherie, PIPER'S friend and Aaron cousin. He fell for her from the start. PIPER is struggling with her feelings. She wants love. I enjoyed this book.
Absolutely loved the characters in this sweet, love, unexpectedly, happy ever after. This was the first book of Monique McDonell that I'd read and will look for more!
(3.5 stars) - has some issues but is at least still fun
At its heart, this is a fairly well constructed marriage of convenience story, with likeable characters and witty dialogue. And I really appreciated that the heroine knew better than to give into the temptation to have sex, as it would ruin her ability to see things clearly.
Yes, there are some noticeable editing issues, but hardly insurmountable. I didn't care for the foul language, especially taking the Lord's Name in vain, either.
The biggest issue with the plot, though, is the hero's unrepented willingness to commit adultery (regretting Ophelia isn't recognizing that the adultery itself was wrong) .
Love is more than feelings; it's a decision. The feelings come & go thru the years, but the decision to commit, to honor, is what holds the marriage together. Without that understanding of & respect for the marriage bond, the hero isn't likely to stay faithful in those times when love takes effort.
Which makes the ending look more likely to be happily-for-now rather than the desired happily-ever-after.
*Clean romance level: passionate kisses, secular attitudes on sex outside of marriage, two married characters have sex but no graphic details are given *Religion: God's Name is taken in vain, including as cursing, sadly *Language: about a dozen uses of h*ll & sh*t, minor crudity
I totally liked this book. They both came from crappy families, so where a little reluctant on the love front, Aaron more than Piper. They decided that they wanted an arrangement that would suit them both so they decided to get married to help both their careers and that Piper wouldn't be deported back to Australia. She put a ban on sex because she's can't do casual. But as they get to know one another, things start to turn real for both of them. I liked both main characters. They were sweet and passionate.I liked how Piper just being herself, won over so many people. OK, apart from Aaron's mother. Which I would have liked to have been resolved. The only negative was that it seemed to leave you hanging and something's just left unanswered.
2.5 stars (between “liked it” and “it was okay”). I liked how it wrapped up. I had the same reservations and worries that the MC had, that since she was falling for him, she was going to have her heart broken if it was all superficial for him. Of course it was way too sudden for expressions of true love, but that just comes with the novella terrain. All in all, it was cutish. My only misgiving was that he was sleeping with a married woman before he met the MC. Not only is that despicable, but it shows a lack of respect toward marriage vows and I agreed with the MC that it could be a sign that he wouldn’t honor his own down the road. Thankfully the story did a good job of selling the reader on believing that wouldn’t be the case. He ended up being really sweet.
This was such a cute story. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Piper is from Australia. She came to America on a visa, but her time is running out. She runs a very successful food truck business and is close to selling it for a huge profit. She needs to get married so she has time to close the deal. Her good friend Cherie has a cousin Aaron, who needs a wife to get a promotion. So, you can see where this is going. It is a sweet story and I know you will love it. I sure did.
This book had been sitting in my library for a while. Today was the perfect day to read it.
Even though this book is a novella I found that I connected with the characters pretty easily. With me getting to know them quite well in the short space of time. It was nice to see a strong independent character like Piper who was trying to run a successful business. There was lovely chemistry between Piper and Aaron especially as they got to know each other better. Will they be destined to stay friends or will their marriage of convenience become real?
The story moved along at a good pace and I easily finished it in one evening. I almost wished the story could have been slightly longer, it could easily have been a full length story. Although I do hope that we get to catch up with Aaron and Piper later on in the series.
Light hearted and very sweet at times I am now looking forward to reading more in this series. If you are looking for a short story to read in an evening Any Way You Slice It would be perfect.
Piper and Aaron. They both need to wed to solve their needs. I liked the characters in the book. They have chemistry and spark between them. They say the marriage will be in name only. Her friend Cherie set things in motion. Aaron was a lawyer. His firm prefers married partners. He wanted a promotion. Piper is on a Visa, it was expiring in a month. She runs her own business, and makes delicious pies. It is an HEA. #21on BNB Challenge.
Love this novella about marriage of convenience. It's a short, sweet and lovely novella about Piper and Aaron who both need to get into a marriage of convenience for their own reasons.
I like Piper who is a smart lady, kind and business savvy from the start. Aaron however takes a bit of time to grow on me though but deep down he's a good guy.
I finished reading this novella in a less than 3 hours, definitely recommend it.
This was a quick and fun read about a woman who needs to marry someone so she can keep her successful food truck business going, and a man who needs a wife to make it look good for his promotion in the law firm he works for. The two get together with the help of his cousin/her friend, and the result is more than either of them expected. This is a happy, feel-good read, just perfect for a summer day.
I agreed to read and review this book, It was a nicely written sweet romance. There was a clear plot and an ultimate goal for the two characters even if they appeared to read it from a different script at time. My only reason for giving it a 4 and not a 5 star review was that it seemed a bit rushed particularly the ending; that said, prior to the ending it was a nicely paced book.
I think this is a cute story! I really liked getting to know Piper, Cherie, Aaron, and the rest of the family! They remind me of my family when I was little and would have family gatherings at my grandmothers! Crazy bunch! This novel was very well put together, easy to read at a good pace, and the characters were well balanced. I am eager to start the next book in this series to see what crazy things happen next.
Kudos to Monique for a terrific and lovely story. She didn't need a lot of profanity and there are no sex scenes. One typo that was at the end. Piper and Aaron were just made for each other. His actions were so real. A five star recommendation. If you're looking for a quick and tender read choose this.
