What was supposed to be a romantic picnic at “their spot” turns criminal when Katrina and Todd stumble—almost literally—over a body.
What’s the college chef doing under a bush up in the mountains? Other than being dead, that is.
Who killed him? Why?
All clues point to people who Katrina is certain didn’t do it. Especially the one who ends up dead himself.
Uh, oh.
Thanks to a slow-burning romantic relationship that can’t seem to get past chapter one, and a determination to save her friend from false arrest, Katrina joins Todd again as they riddle out bizarre clues, weed through unlikely suspects, and learn to communicate on a more personal level.
What do you get when you combine literary humor, sweet romance, and a practical helping of faith? A cozy mystery that'll keep you guessing. Barbara Cornthwaite's second Wilkester Mystery has everything you want for a cozy read.
Barbara Cornthwaite lives in the middle of Ireland with her husband and children. She taught college English before "retiring" to do something she loves far more; her days are now filled with homeschooling, trying to keep the house tidy (a losing battle), and trying to stay warm in the damp Irish climate (also a losing battle). She is surrounded by medieval castles, picturesque flocks of sheep, and ancient stone monuments. These things are unappreciated by her six children, who are more impressed by traffic jams, skyscrapers, and hot weather.
SNUFFED OUT is the first book I’ve ever read by Barbara Cornthwaite. I loved everything about this beautiful story and I’m excited to read more by her. Barbara Cornthwaite really has a way of grabbing her readers and she never lets us go. There is lots of mystery that will keep you guessing and just enough romance to want you wishing for more. If you are looking for a beautiful story to pull you out of your book slump, you can’t go wrong with SNUFFED OUT.
Katrina and Todd go off on a romantic picnic and things go pretty well. That is, until they stumble on a body. The dead body turns out to be Travis Melford, a college chef and Todd and Katrina can’t help but getting pulled into who did it and why! The suspects seem far fetched to Katrina and she is determined to find out what happened. I wasn’t terribly surprised by the perpetrator, but I wasn’t disappointed, either. Mixing faith, literary humor, sweet romance, and a cozy mystery that will keep you guessing, Barbara Cornthwaite’s second Wilkester Mystery has everything you want in a cozy read. SNUFFED OUT really takes a turn that will have you unable to put this beautiful story.
SNUFFED OUT is filled with twists and turns and had me staying up way too late one night to finish! I had to know where Barbara Cornthwaite was taking us and what would happen to Travis and Katrina. There is so much heart in Barbara’s writing that I was left with a huge smile on my face and my heart very happy. All of the characters are very interesting and believable, so much so that I felt as if I’ve known them for a long time. The mystery just keeps getting better with each page, I thought I had it figured out and then there was a new twist. So if course, I was flipping the pages like a woman in a serious mission! I’m so excited to read more of Barbara’s previous books! Who did it and why, you ask? You are going to want to read SNUFFED OUT to find out!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from CelebrateLit. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for violence (including a non-graphic murder), romantic decisions, a child abuse discussed. Best for Ages: 18 and up
I was very grateful I didn’t find out about this series until the second book came out because I would have had a very hard time waiting. Again, I read this on Kindle Unlimited, but I plan to get paperback copies sometime in the not to distant future. These are too good to just have on Kindle Unlimited.
This story picks up not too long after the last book, maybe a couple of months? The timing felt good and I didn’t feel like I had missed anything.
The characters are endearing as ever. I really love how realistic some of the struggles Katrina and Todd have in their romance. Nothing weird or overblown, just a normal learning curve and things that need to be worked out. I’m not saying that I would endorse everything they do (though I really like that they have standards and keep to them) but I did really love it.
The mystery was really interesting. Different than the last one by a lot. It kept me guessing and flipping and turning pages. Cornthwaite is very talented when it comes to mysteries.
Once again, I loved the religious elements in the book. There are strong Christians who are still flawed but want to do what is right. Cornthwaite does a masterful job of having a strong faith element that feels natural.
Once again, I highly recommend this book for those who love mysteries, realistic godly characters, and series that make you want to keep reading (without ending on cliff hangers).
Welcome back to the sleepy college town of Wilkester, where murder and mayhem lurk beneath the calm exterior. Cafeteria manager Travis Melford has been killed right during the Regency conference held at the college. Adjunct English professor Katrina Peters comes to the rescue of her friend, Dr. Susan Langton, accused of the murder. Snuffed Out, #2 The Wilkester Mysteries by Barbara Cornthwaite, is a fun cozy mystery plus. The plus stands for a strong faith emphasis with a clear gospel message. It also represents the fact that fostering is a side subject well-explored and truthfully presented. You will feel deeply for Kim and Ed and Becky, all foster parents, as well as the children they seek to nurture. For me, a good cozy has romance. Snuffed Out does and it’s enlightening to see Katrina and detective Todd Mason’s relationship move so slowly and discover the maddening unknowns about that by the novel’s end. Occasional humor had me bursting out in laughter at various points. I am more than ready for my next visit to Wilkester. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher through Celebrate Lit. I voluntarily left this review, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
”...But time is moving so slowly. Like a turtle walking through tar.”
”...your problem is that you’re trying to face situations right now that God isn’t asking you to face.”
Another great cozy mystery! This had all the elements I loved from the first book---fun and realistic characters, literary quotes and references, an intriguing mystery, foster parenting, and faith lived out. I really wish Katrina was a real person so I could get to know her. :)
I especially liked how Katrina used Paradise Lost as a way to present the gospel to a colleague; what a perfect demonstration of how to use opportunities to talk to people about God ... and how cool that literature was the way to do it in this case!
This was a great sequel, and I loved seeing Katrina's and Todd's relationship progress. The mystery was very engaging and I cannot wait to read the next.
Snuffed Out by Barbara Cornthwaite has Dr. Katrina Peters stumbling upon a very dead man with her boyfriend, Detective Todd Mason in Mt. Rainier National Forest after a cozy picnic. The victim turns out to be Travis Melford who works at Wilkester College. Dr. Susan Langton, the creator and organizer of the Regency Conference currently taking place on campus, ends up the prime suspect. Katrina has a keen eye for detail as well as good deduction skills which help Todd with this perplexing investigation. Snuffed Out is the second novel in the Wilkester Mysteries. I do recommend reading Brought to Book before embarking on Snuffed Out. I thought Snuffed Out was easy to read with realistic characters and mild pacing. I liked that the book takes place in the Pacific Northwest. Katrina and Todd visit Mt. Rainier National Forest. I would have enjoyed more details about the park and the view from their special rock (I bet it was special). I like that the series takes place on a college campus. We get to see what life is like for an adjunct professor. I enjoyed learning more about Katrina’s work and hearing about the unique Regency Conference. The mystery was nicely done. I thought it was clever. There are a couple of good suspects along with misdirection. I appreciated that all the details of the mystery are wrapped up at the end. It depends upon how many mysteries you have read on how soon you solve this whodunit. In addition to the mystery, the author has a single woman becoming a foster mother. She gets her first charge, and it is a rough ride. We get to see the difficulties and pleasures in becoming a foster parent. The relationship between Katrina and Todd is developing. They are learning more about each other and need to decide what the next step should be for them. Christianity is present throughout the story in a low key way. Katrina is a Christian, but she does not force her views on anyone. She is a woman who is at peace because she knows God is in control of her life. Snuffed Out is a crafty Christian cozy mystery with a poetry professor, a dashing detective, romantic Regency lectures, a pretty poison, and clever clues.
This is another enjoyable cozy mystery featuring Katrina, amateur sleuth and literature professor. The murder aspect of the novel was good with a twist at the end I didn't see coming, though there were hints. This novel had a bit more about the relationship between Katrina and Todd, the police detective who is sweet on her. Katrina deals with some personal issues relating to falling for a divorced man.
I like how Cornthwaite adds several side issues to the plot. There is a realistic look at the potential difficulties in fostering troubled children. I like how Katrina suggests one can gain insights into the culture of a historical time better through the literature of the day than just through the historical facts given. The literature quotes and poems and exploration of Milton are a plus. And I am especially impressed with how Katrina expresses her Christianity. Cornthwaite did an excellent job there.
I liked this cozy mystery taking place in the Pacific Northwest, near Mount Rainier. I do wish Cornthwaite had included more description of the mighty mountain represented on the cover and the view Katrina and Todd saw from their rock. Other than that, an enjoyable novel. I will certainly be looking for the next in the series.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Picking up where Brought to Book left off, Katrina and Todd are embarking on their new relationship, still learning the ins and outs, when they stumble on a dead body on their date.
I loved continuing to follow Katrina and Todd as they navigate their relationship while solving twisting murder in their college town. Katrina is one of my favorite characters. Ever. She is intelligent and logical, she knows her mind, but is a great listener and doesn't always know the perfect to handle new experiences, yet she is so strong in her faith. She is so relatable and human, she is able to laugh at herself, and has a heart for others. I loved how she has strong opinions about historical fiction, and has a passion for language.
This is a charming, cozy mystery, with a wonderfully written slow burn romance and well developed relatable characters. We meet many new characters while revisiting familiar faces from the previous book. I highly recommend reading the the first book in the series before diving into this one 1). Because it's fantastic. 2). It will help you understand better the things going on in this book and what brought them to where they are now. This 2nd installment in the Wilkester Mysteries will not disappoint!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Snuffed Out is a fun romantic mystery that is primarily solved due to conversations between college professor Katrina and her police detective romantic interest Todd about things she had observed or heard on campus. A multitude of seemingly insignificant clues and a growing list of suspects work together to make the story all the more intriguing. The developing romance between Katrina and her detective are the icing on the cake.
From the moment Katrina and Todd literally stumbled over the murder victim until the surprising ending, Snuffed Out was a page-turner. I would consider it to be in the cozy mystery genre so instead of a lot of shoot-em-up action the case was solved by a series of deductions based on evidence. I particularly enjoyed the conversations between Todd and Katrina about the case. Although not pertinent to the case, I also loved Katrina’s interactions with her friends and how they supported each other and their natural discussions of faith in their daily conversations.
All in all, Snuffed Out was a very satisfying read that is perfect for a long, relaxing winter evening.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery read by Barbara Cornthwaite. This was my first read by this author, and I am certainly glad to find a new author. The story wasn’t what I expected, it really wasn’t as much of the murder story as I thought it would be, but thats ok! The other issues in the story with friends and family made up for an awesome read. Katrina and Todd were fabulous characters and it was fun watching as two hassles out the clues to solve the mystery here. I also got to know and love the other characters as well. Katrina and her friends were relaxing for me. It was nice to get away for a few hours and just read. I would recommend this story to anyone wanting a good clean sweet cozy read! I give this one four stars!
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
This cozy mystery is written with excellence and includes engaging characters, fascinating history and literature, and a strong message of faith and the gospel. I am very thankful to have learned of this series and author! It combines the best elements of the cozy mystery and Christian fiction genres. I felt at times I was enjoying their Washington State summer. I also increased admiration for those who give the priceless gift of being foster parents despite the challenges, as well as those who help foster parents.
Katrina is an adjunct professor and editor who teaches at Wilkester College. She is lecturing in a special summer conference that might become an annual event. The Regency Conference is put on by faculty and catered by the college. Katrina’s focus is on literature. She has been dating Todd, a police detective, for a couple months. Both are Christians, and he is very conscious of taking their potential relationship slow and not focusing on physical aspects.
When finished for the day at their respective jobs, Todd and Katrina go to Rainier National Forest for a picnic and hike. As they prepare to leave, Todd notices an antique snuff box on the path – not a common item to find anywhere, much less on a hiking trail. Katrina mentioned that Susan, a professor at the college, has a collection of snuff boxes in her office. They look around to see if there is anything else nearby; Katrina found the body of a man with rocks piled around it. There is no obvious cause of death, nor is there an ID or wallet. It is unlikely he simply died die to the rocks set around him.
The next day, Todd visited Susan. He learned that the snuff box is hers and that she wasn’t aware it was missing. The man was Travis, head of the college food service. His death was caused by eating grapes with cyanide in them. Susan told Katrina later that she was supposed to have met Travis the night before his body was found to review one of the menus for the conference, but he never showed up. She also told Katrina that they had dated for a while but she broke up with him. Among other things, he was very jealous, having been very upset when he saw her merely talking with a male colleague. It isn’t long until Susan is the primary suspect, even though the timeline doesn’t work, she couldn’t possibly have moved Travis’s body to the forest herself, and she adamantly defends her innocence. Yet clues continually revealed point to her, especially when the second person is found poisoned by cyanide.
Wow, what a plot! It is planned and executed with excellence, and I would have never come up with whodunit. I honestly could not imagine anyone doing what this killer did and why! I appreciated the faith message, and how the crises in one’s life can be stepping-stones to noticing and responding to the peace of a believer. We see how the obvious peace, and other fruit of the Spirit in the life of a believer is an active witness. The end is very satisfactory with unforeseen surprises, and all loose ends are tied up. I highly recommend this to fans of well-written cozy mysteries that highlight the Christian faith and includes friendship, fostering, and romance.
From a thankful heart: I received a copy of this novel from Celebrate Lit, and this is my honest review.
The Wilkester Mysteries is a series that I hope will continue and result in many volumes. As far as cozy mysteries go, I am rather picky and often find them too fluffy or dull, which is why I lean more toward the suspense genre. However, Barbara Cornthwaite has managed to create a cozy series that has light danger and thrills without inducing nightmares or putting readers to sleep. There is a near-perfect blend of mystery, romance, literature, and faith that both entertains and educates, along with some wry humor for good measure.
For those who have bemoaned the seeming dearth of witty literary fiction focused on historical literature (or at least the knowledge thereof), this series needs to go to the top of your to-read list! “Snuffed Out” is book two, and in my opinion it is necessary to read book one, “Brought to Book,” first. The characters remain consistent and although the crimes differ, the storyline itself continues, and in this case there is not enough backstory in the sequel to sufficiently understand who each person is and what is happening. Katrina narrates both stories in the first person, drawing readers directly into the mysteries and her personal life. My favorite character in the first book, I have to admit that I found Katrina annoying at times in this one, particularly when she begins comparing herself to Todd’s ex-wife. This does demonstrate her humanity, though, and her selflessness is evidenced by how she always takes care of those in need. She still quotes famous classic literature, with a fondness for the work of Jane Austen, applying it to life in unique ways.
Spiritual truths gently permeate the narrative, explaining the Gospel to characters—and readers—in brilliantly simple terms. Todd’s analysis of sin particularly stood out to me and is more relevant than ever during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic: “Sin is dark. All sin is dark. Not just the violent and heart-breaking crimes. That stuff is what evil looks like with the mask off. Sins that don’t seem so bad—losing your temper, telling a white lie, gossiping—is the same dark evil, just with a mask on. But all of it is bad enough to separate us from God. All of it is why Jesus had to die on the cross.” Often enough, we are faced with overwhelming situations that make us feel as if we, like Katrina, are “a turtle walking through tar”, but thankfully, if we walk with the Lord, He gives us the strength and the courage to continue on as Paul exhorts us in Philippians 3:13. In “Snuffed Out,” fostering is again a significant theme, which is so important in and of itself as well as for the lessons it can teach. Consoling a new foster mom, Katrina tells her: “But just because something turns out to be difficult—or more difficult—than you thought it would be doesn’t mean you don’t deserve help or sympathy.” The same applies to our trials, too, and we have a Savior ready and waiting for us to call on Him!
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
This is the second book in the series and I am really enjoying the writing style of the author. She mixes faith, history and mystery into a book that is fun to read. The characters are good and I loved reading about Katrina and Todd. I found it interesting that Todd wanted to take their relationship slow and you can feel at times that Katrina is wondering if they will ever move forward. It is something to be attentive of throughout the story.
Now the murder was expected in the book, but who the victim was I was not prepared for. Everyone is getting ready for lectures and exhibits for The Regency Conference. The author shines as she gives historic facts about this time period. I almost forgot about the murder because I was so intrigued by the Regency period. My head did do a double take as we find out that someone on staff at the college could be a suspect for murder. The suspense builds as a list of suspects start piling up.
I did like that the author gave us a more in-depth look at Katrina. She is having problems believing Todd loves her. Her fear is starting to take over and it may push Todd away. It was an interesting side story and I really enjoyed how she decides to share her fears with Todd. Oh Todd is such a good man and he is going to make someone a great husband some day.
I was surprised at how the murder was solved and who the killer was. The author does a great job of leaving a subtle trail but I seemed to not catch on as fast as I should have. I hope you are ready for a tour through literature, history and a well defined murder mystery. I was thrilled by the ending and hope we get another book in the series,
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This book was even better than the first one I read last month! I am really falling in love with this character, Katrina. First, I love how fostering and adoption was weaved into the pages. It is not a main focus point of this cozy mystery but it does play a part in our character development. Speaking of character development, one of the aspects of this book I really loved was the intentional refrain from physical contact. This actually turns hysterical in several scenes because while it works in an Austen film or novel, in a book the characters are quite frustrated and the sentence, "I hate dating" ends the scene on a giggle.
A lot of Christian fiction can over use the use of God and faith between the pages that it almost feels unreal, or they can go completely opposite and use none. However, author Barbara Cornthwaite does a marvelous job in putting enough in, with a touch of historical works and poetry, that you just smile at the authenticity of Christianity and faith being a genuine substance within the pages. It was refreshing. It was like having a conversation, rather than using an opportunity to deliver a sermon.
"Sin is dark. All sin is dark. Not just the violent and heartbreaking crimes. That stuff is what evil looks like with the mask off. Sins that don't seem so bad-- loosing your temper, telling a white lie, gossiping-- is the same as the dark evil, just with a mask on. But all of it is bad enough to separate us from God. All of it is why Jesus had to die on the cross."
I loved how the novel ended. I questioned myself several times on the who-dunnit aspect. That is a terrific author that can leave enough clues but still keep me guessing!
I really enjoyed these and would recommend them! Praise indeed!

Snag Snuffed Out today.
My Thoughts: In book two of the Wilkester series, we join Todd and Katrina for another mystery plaguing the college. Barbara Cornthwaite has done an excellent job bringing us back to Wilkester to join in the search to solve the mystery of the murder. It's a murder mystery that is enveloped around the budding romance of Todd and Katrina. The reader will enjoy all the characters from the first book: Brought to Book: Brought to Book Review. It's a warm cozy story of friends who care about each other, living life as God intended. It's a book about love and being selfless. I enjoyed that the author did put in some Bible teachings, and kept the characters grounded in their faith. I will certainly be looking forward to more from Barbara Cornthwaite.
Snuffed Out, by Barbara Cornthwaite, is the second book in the Wilkester Mysteries series. Picking up where the first book ends, this cozy mystery novel offers a satisfying blend of suspense and faith. With an added touch of sweet romance, this novel is thoughtful and engaging.
As the plot unfolds, it reveals a story that is interesting and full of surprises. While the mysteries increase and suspicions multiply, important clues are uncovered and unexpected motivations are exposed. Within this mystery, themes of friendship, expectations, and trust ensure that this novel is entertaining as well as edifying.
As with the first book in the series, it is the characters that make this book shine. They are clever and likable. Their thoughts and feelings are interesting and authentic. Though they struggle with unsettling events, questions, and insecurities, they draw genuine strength and purpose from their faith and their friendships.
Page after page, Snuffed Out is a thought-provoking and memorable novel. It is a book I can gladly recommend to all readers who enjoy cozy, inspirational mysteries. Barbara Cornthwaite is a gifted mystery writer, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
*I was given a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.
I am so excited that Snuffed Out, Book 2 of the Wilkester Mysteries series by Barbara Cornthwaite is here! I really enjoy Mystery and Suspense books, as they tend to grab my attention and I hunker down to read until I am finished with a book,
Katrina and Todd are back for Book 2. They are having a Picnic Lunch Date at "their spot" when they discover a dead body. Katrina joins forces with Todd, who is a detective, to find out who murdered the Chef. Katrina is determined to figure out who the suspect, although many clues point to those who she is certain have nothing to do with this murder. Todd and Katrina have been taking things slow in their Romantic Relationship, even though Katrina is ready to commit. Will their relationship flourish as they spend more time together to solve this Murder? Will they finally figure out who the real Murderer is?
WOW, just WOW! I I LOVED Book 1 and Book 2 really made me fall in LOVE with this series. I would highly suggest reading Book 1, Brought to Book, before reading Snuffed Out. Reading the books in order, help make the books flow flawlessly. Barbara Cornthwaite really does write with a beautiful style, makes books easy to read, the storyline flows so well. The Characters, Katrina and Todd, are just amazing and have quite the connection. Their individual personalities are so sweet, putting them together really makes the book great. Totally a COZY book and I absolutely ADORE COZY books!
This is my second book to read by Barbara Cornthwaite, and I can now definitely say that I’m a fan of her books. This one has an interesting murder mystery to be solved, and I love the way she allows us get to know the main characters in her stories. By the time I’d finished this book, I felt as if I’d truly gotten to know the main character, Katrina, and found myself drawn into the book through her.
This book differs from most cozy mysteries in a couple of different ways. There’s several mentions of classic literature all throughout this book. (The author mentioned books by Charlotte Yonge, an English author who wrote books during the middle-to-late 1800’s. I’ve now downloaded one of her books to read later.) The other difference is the thoughtful way the gospel is shared in the book.
This book kept me guessing as to who committed the murders, and I did not put everything together until right before the murderer was revealed in the book. I enjoyed the way Todd and Katrina solved the mystery, and I was glad to see a romance grow between them. I’m ready to read the third book in the series to see what happens next in their story.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This is such a well-written story, with historical and literary facts woven into a neat 'who-dun-it' mystery. There aren't really any spoilers, though you may solve the mystery 1/3 of the book sooner than the detectives. That's still fun though, watching them figure it out.
The part that makes you think comes in with this quote. I'm going to leave a few words out, for full impact:
"You started doing ______ because you thought God wanted you to, right? You thought about it for a while, you took training, and you talked it over with trusted counselors, right? So you've done everything God wanted you to d in terms of making this decision. And just because it's turned out to be very hard doesn't mean you made a mistake. It just means its hard. But God has a plan for how to get through hard things, right? You trust Him, you let your brothers and sisters in Christ come alongside you, and you keep obeying."
Enjoy this story, then consider, what hard thing is God calling you to persevere with? *NOT endorsing staying in a dangerous situation.
*I received an advance copy of this book from the author, and I chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.
This book was somewhat of a surprise to me. I guess I should've paid attention and realized this book was a sequel, because it took me quite a long time to catch up and figure out who was who. So I would definitely suggest starting with book one if you do decide to read this novel.
I was also disappointed in the pace of the story. I love cozy mysteries, so I was hoping for a plot that drew me into the murder and kept me guessing, but there were some long breaks of friend drama and different issues that slowed the mystery and released all the tension. I enjoyed the romance between Katrina and Todd, but I wish the story could've been a little more suspenseful. By the end, I came to like the characters who slowed the book down. But all the same, I felt like we could have seen more of the big reveal first hand to make it come to life even more. Maybe reading the first book of the series first would've helped me with this issue. Overall, it was a good mystery if you could get through it to the end.
The characters in book one of Barbara Cornthwaite’s Wilkester Mysteries series became fictional friends by the end, so I was thrilled to get to spend some more time with them in Snuffed Out.
Katrina and Todd are so likable. Katrina is a good friend, but she has plenty of doubts when it goes to her romantic relationship. Even though it took a little while, I appreciated that her friends aren’t afraid to speak the truth to her and she and Todd have a conversation about their concerns and fears.
This book introduced some more college staff, and while there is a mystery to solve, the best part of this book is in how Katrina lives life with her faith, her friends, and with the new man in her life. And I am thrilled to know there is a third book in the series coming.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
YEAH! The second book in this series, I liked the first one, so, how did this book do? Katrina is just amazing. She shines even more than in the first book, and that's awesome in and of itself. I am one who enjoys the historical and other references that are placed throughout the story. The romance is a low level, but nice. The mystery is so much fun! As with the last book, this one covers a very sensitive topic, children in harm's way and foster children. Even more than the last book, it's handled so well, and the faith elements flow naturally without preachiness. I adore that in a story because this is how we are to live as Christians. It's a smart, funny, romantic, witty story and I can't wait to read the next one in this series! Also, avoid deathly picnics.
Thank you to Celebrate Lit for my copy of this book. This review is my own, left freely. A positive review wasn't required.
Snuffed out is Book 2 in the Wilkester series. I have read book one - and you can see my review HERE. Reading the books in order is recommended . This story picks up not too long after the last book ends. We get to see our cast of characters again. We see Katrina and Todd and their relationship. It was fun to watch them navigate their new relationship. Katrina and Todd find themselves enjoying a nice picnic - and they stumble across a dead body. The mystery was really interesting. I thought I had it figured out - but boom the author threw some different bread crumbs and shook things up. I also love how the author was very knowledgeable about the Regency Era. I loved all the historical facts that were in it. The author also did a great job in dropping in the Christian themes. I wish there were going to be more - I have been enjoying this series
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program - all thoughts are my own.
Set during the summer between terms at Wilkester College, this mystery offers a harvest of suspense and intrigue along with literary references (because a main character is an English professor) and unexpected discoveries. The case’s leads finally all weave together to reveal the real murderer and that person’s attempts to commit even more dastardly deeds. The story also includes foster children and police at work, in addition to other gripping story elements, for a well-rounded tale and compelling characters. There may even be an unfolding romance. The characters from the first book in this series continue in their roles, but each novel can stand alone as a full story. It may not seem like a typical college experience, but it could possibly happen like this, right? Of course, since it’s fiction, any goes, and this goes quickly as you flip the pages toward its conclusion in the effort to find out who is actually guilty. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Having read the first book in this series, I looked forward to reading the second book, Snuffed Out. Katrina, the principal character, along with her “boyfriend” Todd, along with their friends creates a tapestry that deserves studying. Katrina works at a college, while Todd works in law enforcement.
The story opens with a Regency Conference which Katrina helps organize and lecture at the college where she works. However, a murder soon takes place. Katrina listens well to those around her and shares that information with Todd.
I love how faith plays a major role in this story collection. It shares the power and mercy of God’s love without being pushy. The storyline moves along at a reasonable pace. I have to say reading this series was a good use of my time. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
So check it out for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Snuffed Out is a continuation of the Wilkester Mysteries. Katrina and Todd are thrown together again to solve not one, but two murders at Wilkester College.
The clues aren't coming together very fast and the suspect they have seems to be guilty. Lots of twists and unexpected surprises in the storyline.
The character of Katrina is quirky, playful but apprehensive of her relationship with Todd. She wonders constantly how his feelings for her are progressing. She is faced with insecurity but feels God has chosen Todd for her.
The story is steeped in inspirational and uplifting circumstances within relationships and teaches trust. A wonderful read with everyday situations among friends.
Single parent foster care adds an interesting aspect to the story. I loved the surprise ending and how the author finally uncovered the actual killer. It will surprise you to the end!
I was provided with a complimentary copy and voluntarily choose to review it.
Snuffed Out is the second installment from Barbara Cornthwaite’s series, Wilkester Mysteries. I had the pleasure of reading the first book, Brought to Book, and was excited to have the opportunity to read this one. I was not disappointed. Since it is part of a series, I would think it would be best to start at the beginning. I enjoyed reading this quick mystery and suspense. I thought it was fun and entertaining to catch up with Todd and Katrina to see where they are now. I was captivated with their story from start to finish. It was so good.
I am giving Snuffed Out four and a half stars. I am hoping there will be a third addition to the Wilkester Mysteries. I recommend this one for readers who enjoy reading clean mysteries.
I received Snuffed Out from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
In Snuffed Out, a snuff box from a history professor's collection is found on the scene where a dead body was also found by Katrina and Todd. (I love the play on words in the title!) Katrina and Todd work together to solve the mystery regarding the person who died. Along the way, they experience positive progression in their relationship, and we get to know some new characters. I had been looking forward to this book ever since I read the first book in the series Brought to Book. My only complaint about the book is that it was too short. The story was just right - I just wanted to read more! I did not expect the conclusion to the case, so that was fun. I also really liked how Katrina takes the opportunity to share the Gospel with a new character who listens carefully. I hope to read more about that in the next book.
Snuffed Out by Barbara Cornthwaite is a good mystery with the wonderful addition of romance. This is the second book in this series. The first one, Brought to Book, is a good read, too. Both of these are stand alone or can be read in order. The main female character is lacking in self confidence, unsure of her career and her relationship with the handsome detective. She appears almost too uncertain about many things. Her faith journey is a crucial part of this story and adds depth. The setting at a college campus provides the perfect backdrop for this mystery. The characters in this story are brought to life through the author’s descriptions. I recommend this good book for those that enjoy a well written mystery that keeps you guessing.
This book was provided through Celebrate Lit and the author for me to read. The opinions expressed are my own thoughts.
I really enjoyed this book, even more then the first one in this series. One things I really like about Barbara’s writing is that she doesn’t shy away from sharing the gospel. Katrina fully shared it with another character in this book. This is missing from so many books these days.
I had an idea what might have happened about halfway through the book but I wasn’t totally sure I was correct, but I was 🙂
I also enjoyed seeing Katrina and Todd’s relationship grow and the misunderstandings they had along the way.
One more thing I really appreciated was the glimpse into fostering. Not easy, but worth it.
A copy of this book was given to me through the Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.
