I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. 'The Valiant Highlander' by Amy Jarecki is book two in the "Highland Defender" series. This is the story of Mary Castleton, of Dunscaith Castleand and Sir Donald MacDonald, Baronet of Sleat. Mary first meets Donald when she is dressed as a lad teacher her younger brother to shoot. Their father has loss a leg and unable to help teach him. Donald mistakes her for a lad and they have a shooting contest. Shortly after Donald learns she is a women instead. Donald is there along with other for some highland games. Donald does trading to America to help support his clan and behind closed doors keep the Jacobite rebellion going. When Mary is kidnapped for her dowry and the kidnappers take some of his trade he goes after the kidnappers. Mary and Donald after first meet come to the same conclusion that they would not make a good fit together but after this adventure will thy change their minds? Another Great Read by Ms. Jarecki!
Donald MacDonald Baron of Sleat and the leader of all the MacDonald clans has traveled to the Highland Games. We met Donald MacDonald in book 1 The Fearless Highlander. The Jacobite Clans have decided they could gather together and discuss how to outwit the Williamiets/British from stealing all there lands, cattle and livelihoods by meeting at the Highland Games.
Mary of Castleton is the eldest daughter of John Castelton Laird, but Mary is not your ordinary miss. She can shoot and ride horse with the best of men. She also runs her fathers household.
Dressed as a boy Mary best Donald in a shooting match. Too Donalds great surprise the you lad is a beautiful women.
There is a enemy lurking about a Scottish trader who has join the British Army Lieutenant Balford MacLeod. Balford is stalking Mary and kidnaps her and steals Donald ship. Balford let me just say is crazy. He wants to force Mary to marry him. But she escapes and find her self being saved from drowning by Donald. There mad dash to escape and keep Mary from being recaptures is an adventure through the Highlands. They continue to deny there attraction to each other.
Unfortunately this is were the story goes off the rails for me. Once in Glasgow Mary becomes great friends with Barbara Donald's sister. Then up pops Balford and this time he sets fire too the docks and warehouse and makes another attempt on kidnapping Mary. He had been punished for his first attempt. Col. Hill puts him in the stockade for a fortnight but it didn't do any good. Donald is arrested and imprisoned in the Tolbooth for over a month. He has been accused by Lt. Balford of trying to kill him and burning down the docks the very crime he committed.
That part of the story baffled me, it just went to far. Yes I know how cruel the Scottish were treated but Balford was Scottish and even though he was in the Kings Army he had been imprisoned himself for his first kidnap attempt on Mary. He should have been taken out hung and disembowel once they find out he is the culprit again. This would have made a better ending to see some revenge and justification of the humiliation Donald received after all he was a Scottish Lord. Balford is taken into custody, but we really don't know what punishment he got. I don't really like stories were there is not enough punishment of the villain. Instead Mary's father comes for her in Glasgow and won't let her testify at the hearing as to what happen. Then he proceeds to treat her like she wasn't wanted in his home. He wanted her gone and out of the way of the women he wanted to marry. My question is then why come an get Mary? John turned his back on his own leader/chieftain and proceeds to make him gravel fro Mary hand in marriage!!
The story is written well and the characters!! It just made me mad instead of happy like bk1 The Fearless Highlander, which I gave 5 stars too. The sex in this story is so generic. Like it was copied from bk1. This one missed the mark!!
Enjoyable highland romp with a delightfully fresh heroine and a handsome braw Jacobite hero. Complete with with a traitorous, leering, despicable Scotsman red coat officer, Lieutenant Balfour MacLeod, a kidnapping and a rescue and so much more. Balfour was a great villain to dislike. Sir Donald MacDonald, Baronet of Sleat and Mary of Castleton clash at every turn. Not helped by their first meeting when he thought she was a lad and took up her challenge to a shooting match. Hmm! Completely dismissing her, he is drawn into an involvement he doesn't want when Mary is taken by force from Dunscaith Castle, and to add insult to injury, in Donald's sea galley. The thing is Mary is just so brash, not at all the sort of wife to fit into the life he leads as a leader of society. That sentiment certainly smacked of vanity, misunderstanding and elitism. About then Sir Donald was shown for the unthinking clod that he was capable of being. This motherless young woman had neither the guidance or influence that most women in her position would have had. Really! Talk about fighting fate! I thought she'd done an admirable job, given her history. Don hasn't counted on the strong attraction he feels for Mary whenever they are together. I was quite cross about the 'despite his fears about her' attitude of prejudice he displays towards her. Still he comes to his senses and realizes how much Mary means to him. Indeed he does reclaim himself somewhat when he tells her how much she means to him, particularly 'the memory ...of [her] red tresses that pick up the breeze and flicker like fire.' I found the feisty Mary a delightful heroine, the dour Donald, not so much but thankfully he does grow. In the end this is a pleasing addition to the series.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series by Amy!! It is packed with danger, treason, secrets, treachery and passion in abundance.
Mary is the eldest daughter and runs the keep for her father. Known as Mary of Castleton, she knows more than how to run the place. She is well versed in men's ways also. Riding and shooting a musket better than most men to name a few. And her first meeting with Donald, the Baronet of Sleat leaves her a wee bit embarrassed as she's dressed as a lad and takes his money.
Don has never met a lass like Miss Mary. Or one as frustrating and infuriating as she. Seemingly falling into trouble at every turn seems to be something she is good at. When the red coats ruin their gathering and make threats, he is sure to make known what will happen in return. But that doesn't deter them. Stealing his galley, and Miss Mary he has no choice but go after them. And rescuing her and keeping her safe is priority number one.
As they return to his home, he is struck with his overwhelming attraction to her. But the Jacobite cause has to be the most important thing. Not his frowning affection for her. But as the threat to her life is brought front and center will he be able to fight his love for her?
On the Isle of Skye a big gathering is being held at Castleton. Clans will be there, games will be held and those seeking mates might find one another – at least Mary’s father hopes his eldest will find a marriage that will improve his clans standing even though Mary has no real interest in a husband having been so busy running her own home since she was twelve.
The first encounter Mary has with Donald MacDonald was a surprise to both of them. What started out a bit rocky gets worse through a kidnapping, an escape, a race across the land and other events that carry them hither and yon during their further getting to know one another. With Balfour MacLeod cast as villain, and doing a very good job of it, there is much to contend with for both Mary and Donald. The cause of the Jacobites is strong in the mind of Donald and others in the Defender’s series but is it so strong that it will prevent time for love to flourish?
I enjoyed this story though I think I preferred book one of the series more. I would like to thank NetGalley and Rapture Books for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this audiobook. The story was interesting with a woman who was a strong archer, yet she could run her father's household quite well. Mary wanted to be able to protect herself and siblings with all the Dragoons around. Donald attended the clan event and found out that he had been bested by a woman. He appeared self-centered but was fighting for his people in secret. With kidnapping, imprisonment, and arson, there was plenty to keep the story moving along. I really did enjoy it and recommend it.
The narration by Joel Froomkin was well done, even with all the female voices he had to do. He brought the characters to life and added to my enjoyment of this story.
Having rated Book 1, The Fearless Highlander, 4 stars, I was thrilled to be gifted a NetGalley ARC for The Valiant Highlander, book 2, in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion. As an avid fan of this genre and Ms. Jarecki, in particular, it pains me to admit I didn’t particularly enjoy this one.
**spoilers possible**
What was wrong? Well, the too English manners of the characters did not match their much appreciated Scottish brogue. Meaning, when I read a Scottish romance I expect the characters to appear they come from the highlands of Scotland, not the ballrooms of England. It’s like trying to put a round peg into a square hole. It just doesn’t fit. The story itself also seemed to drag out overly long with the reluctant to love/commit hero and lack of developments in the storyline. Basically, Donald gets his ship stolen by a Redcoat officer in love with Mary, who also kidnaps her. He goes after them both, rescues her after she escapes, they wind up in Glasgow, where he lives. He kisses her a couple of times. They have a couple of steamy scenes but he remains determined to send her back to her family. Despite knowing how she feels about him.
What did I like? In the beginning, Mary was the perfect Scottish lass. The whole package, folks. She carried a dirk, could outshoot most men, rode a horse like it was second nature, and knew how to run/manage a castle. She was comfortable in her own skin and didn’t care what others thought. Others around her liked and admired her, as well. Unfortunately, I saw doubt and insecurity seep in as she started to feel like she wasn’t good enough for the hero’s more aristocratic than Scottish world. It didn’t help he seemed to have similar thoughts.
At 80%, I realized I wasn’t engaged enough to care how the story ends. That is never a good sign, my fellow romance book-loving friends. Here’s to hoping others enjoy it. Usually I love everything written by this author, but this one seemed to be the exception. It came across just a typical, average historical read.
Title: The Valiant Highlander, Series: Highlander Defender (Book 2), Author: Amy Jarecki, Pages: 259, stand-alone, reluctant to commit to the girl hero, wishy-washy hero, heroine should have told the hero to take a hike, only a couple steamy scenes
Book 2 – The Valiant Highlander, Pages: 259, 6/12/16 (Don and Mary)

The Valiant Highlander by Amy Jarecki is #2 in her exciting "Highland Defender", series, can be read as a stand alone. See, "The Fearless Highlander".
Well written with engaging characters, allbeit, a bit more laid back, than Book 1. Sir Donald MacDonald, Baronet of Sleat, a laid back and staid Scottish Highlander trying to keep the Jacobite rebellion alive, behind closed doors, and make a living for his clan through trade with the Americas. of his salt melt. Mary Castleton, of Dunscaith Castle, a trews-wearing, musket-wielding, redheaded, feisty, Scottish lass, and eldest daughter of Dunscaith Castle. Enters into Sir Donald's well organized, well-ordered, and pre-designed life, in a tumultuous way. Then, Miss Mary, gets herself kidnapped by a deranged and disillusioned English Lieutenant of Scottish inheritance. Who wishes her dowry and to force her into an unwanted marriage. Of, course, to make matters worse, he confiscates Sir Donald's galley, which would harm Sir Donald's chances of trade with the Americas. So, Sir Donald sets out to save Miss Mary with two of his friends and re-gain his galley. What transpires, is a race across the Scottish countryside, where, Sir Donald and Miss Mary are thrown together in a race for their life. Passion, and dangerous threats, throws their life and their world into turmoil. But, can Sir Donald, keep Miss Mary safe from his nemesis and not lose his heart?
An interesting, steady paced tale with twists and turns, a tumultuous race against time, a fire, passion, and finding love against all odds. At first, it is hard to place Sir Donald as the fierce Highlander with the staid Scottish Gentleman. But slowly, the Scottish Highlander emerges. Miss Mary is fierce, feisty and refuses to conform to a English Lady, allbeit she tries. She remains a Scottish lass, through and through.
While, I must admit, "The Valiant Highlander" did not have the fierceness nor determination of Book 1, "The Fearless Highlander". "The Valiant Highlander", has it's appeal. The passion is not as sensual, nor the romance as exquisite, but this is a most appealing story. The cast of characters is large and I can't wait to read more of them. The storyline is unique, while still maintaining Ms. Jarecki's details to history, authenticity and continuing with her Jacobite rebellion theme. I enjoyed "The Valiant Highlander", the characters and the storyline. Fans of Scottish history, Highlanders, the Jacobite Rebellion, Romance and the thrill of the race. will enjoy this story. An enjoyable and satisfying read! I look forward to the next installment of the "Highland Defender".

4.5 stars
I liked this book - but not quite as much as the first book.
I loved Mary, she was a great heroine. She was feisty, bold and could hold her own with Donald.
Donald was a decent hero - I think he could have come up to scratch a bit sooner about his feelings for Mary. But to be fair, the man had a lot on his plate and he was trying to be honorable.
This book was well written, flowed nicely, had some steamy love scenes, some action, great secondary characters and an obsessed/psycho villain.
While it is second in the series, it could easily be read as a stand alone title.
I would happily recommend this book and am really looking forward to more books in this series.
The Valiant Highlander (Highland Defender Book two) by Amy Jarecki Reviewed by Celtic Barb’s Kilted Tartan Book Review Blog 5 stars Heat Rating - mild tastefully done
(Some true historical background) In 1692 The English monarchy punished the recalcitrance of the Chief of the MacDonalds at the Massacre of Glencoe. They also ordered a military fort to be built in the highlands which became Fort William. So by 1695 it was a turbulent time in Scotland, though it was a time of supposed peace after such a big loss at Glencoe. Yet the Jacobite rebellion threat still remained. As Scotland had still been under English rule for close to two hundred years now being treated horribly and the country itself was much poorer and in a recession. Yes the people resented it as they did the King on the throne William of Orange. Watching blood baths of innocent women and children and the elderly being murdered by the English in Glencoe and the burnings of Dunkeld. The Scottish people had long memories and were just biding their time before it was time to strike again and put the rightful king back on the Throne again the exiled King James Stewart! He still had many supporters in Scotland and France. The name Jacobites is the Latin version of his name. It was time another battle to take back their country back without having redcoats patrolling the areas and breathing down their necks. As the wealthy and titled nobles were trying to find ways to earn a living with trade etc. through the Americas, Africa and India. They certainly didn't want to be starved out again. To feed and arm an army and your people you definitely needed income. The problem was some Scottish people were backing the English and wearing red coat uniforms, total betraying their people and country! Also it was a time some of the nobility and wealthy had to put on airs and forget the highland way of life. Wearing breeches, wigs and cravats like the English. Laws of etiquette were changing to the English way of life too and acceptance this too was not easy for all to accept. Yet if you didn't you would be an outcast. Plus the word Jacobite rebellion could have a Scot swinging on a rope as these were dangerous and difficult times for the Scottish people. It seems so unfair as they only wanted to be left alone in their country to live in peace and freedom. Alba gu Brath...Sáor Alba!
Isle of Skye, Scotland, 1695 This story centers around Mary of Castleton, eldest daughter of a lower Highland Laird Chieftain. She can shoot a musket, throw a dagger and never miss her targets. She can also ride a wild horse barely broken in and even pull a the stopper off a powder horn with her teeth! Mary also wears lad clothes when the occasion calls for it. As this is what she was wearing the first time she meets Sir Donald MacDonald, the Baronet of Sleat, the hero of this story. He also at first thinks she's a lad and not very happy when he finds out she is not and even bested him in target practice!
Mary lost her mother at a young age and her father lost a leg at Battle of Dunkeld in 1689. As was considered lucky since many Jacobite supporters were burned alive in that battle. Therefore most of the castles responsibilities fell to Mary and has been lady of the keep since 12 years of age.
The story starts where her family is hosting the Highland games and her father is hoping to find a good match for a husband for Mary. This will help to strengthen the clan and alliances, though strong willed Mary has no interest in a husband at all. Mary and Sir Donald are like oil and vinegar when they first meet. He the refined aristocrat and she the wild highland lass.
Sir Donald was visiting Mary’s family as they were hosting the Highland Games as Mary's father wants to find her a titled husband. Mary knows this Baron is too high up in title even to look her way. Readers will feel the attraction immediately - even though they both are in denial. Especially when he sees her dressed as a beautiful lass for the first time with her fiery tresses and adorable freckles.
Then the villain of this story. Balfour MacLeod steals Donald’s English galley and and kidnaps Mary. Plus the galley holds the white salt Donald needs in trade an important agreement and secret business deal with the Americas. This is to secretly help support a new Jacobite rebellion and cause. Not to mention help support his people and clan. Donald is trying to work out a trade agreement as a successful business merchant. As he is putting up all his finances in this - if this does not happen he might be financially ruined. As for Balfour MacLeod, this Scottish turncoat and devious English supporter has been stalking and is obsessed with Mary. In his sick diluted mind, thinks he loves her and can force Mary into marriage. He also thinks he can get change her way of thinking. Mary is every bit a highland lass and hates everything about this traitor and bully! Mary would rather die than marry him!
As Donald and Mary are on the run the attraction becomes more apparent, but they have many conflicts too. He feels Mary’s safest solution is to bring her to his townhouse in Glasgow. He feels under his sister Barbara’s tuledge will help her become a society lady she is meant to be! Donald feels Glasgow society would eat her up so he does this for his reason of protection. Besides to being able to fit in and accepted with Glasgow society. He feels she needs to be more refined and behave like a chieftain's daughter should…. in his opinion.
Mary feels ashamed and angry too! Feeling she is not good enough for Sir Donald in his eyes. As Mary is not one to shy away from what she is thinking and feels! Mary feels he has given in to the English way of life! To her it is just being fake, phony and putting on airs. As she sees him in his periwig, breeches and fancy clothes, Mary is not impressed in the least!
Mary has her insecurities too, feeling she is not good enough for a man like Donald. She knows she is lower chieftain's daughter compared to a Baron like Donald. Yet she is still proud to be a highland Lairds daughter.Mary is who she is and won't hide from that fact either.
Donald has much on his mind, trying to help his people and lessen the suffering of the past. Also it with so many responsibilities that he doesn't see with what's right in front of him? Or does he when it's possibly too late? He also worries about the future of his business dealings and the risks he is taking if it doesn't end in success. This also makes him denies what he is feeling and is right in front of him!
Will Donald choose business and support of the jacobite cause over love? Will Mary have her heart shattered? Will Balfour have his evil way and abduct Mary and force her into a marriage she will always refuse, detest and despise? Lot of unanswered questions and more….in this story. You will have to read this spectacular novel to find out.
This story is a fast paced, non stop action packed riveting adventure! It is filled with mystery, suspense, treachery, deceit, betrayal, revenge, forgiveness, faith, hope and love. Best part for me it is layered with true Scottish history in this fictional passionate romance.
Kudos Amy Jarecki! As you did it again in book #2 of The Defender series! Looking forward to the next one in this brilliant series.
Readers can read as a stand alone novel, but The Fearless Highlander is another superb read you don't want to miss! Again I absolutely loved it! Happy Reading!

In this story we meet Sir Donald MacDonald, Baronet of Sleat, who is a highlander but spends most of his time in Glasgow as a merchant. He lives only for the Jacobite cause and his plans do not include marriage. Everything including his clan, his family, and supporting the Jacobite cause rests on him being able to do trade with America. He accepts an invitation and attends a Highland Chieftain’s home for a secret gathering of Jacobite’s under the guise of highland games. He first meets Mary of Castleton, dressed in boys clothing teaching her brother how to shoot. She can wield a gun as well as any man. She is also the lady of the Keep. Unbeknown to Sir Donald, he makes a bet with Mary on who can get the closest to a target. Mary accepts the bet and she ends up winning! Sir Donald asks Mary if she is ready to fight for the cause. Mary says yes and suddenly Sir Donald wrestles and traps her in his arms. Mary’s brother is upset by this and lets the cat out of the bag! He’s flabbergasted and doesn’t have time nor does he need a parcel of children in his way. This is just the beginning! Can a Baronet make room in his life for the love of a Chieftain’s daughter? Read and enjoy!
Not only is The Valiant Highlander an awesome story to read, but to listen to Joel Froomkin's narration, is beyond breathtaking. I'd say both, the author and the narrator, deserve 5*s for this piece of magic. Actually, the book cover is what reeled me in originally, but then within the first chapter, I was hopelessly in love with the characters themselves as well as being entranced by being able to hear them speak through Mr. Froomkin. Make sure your kindle is fully charged when you begin because you won't want to stop in the middle to recharge. You may end up with a new "Book boyfriend". 😀
Donald MacDonald the Baronet of Sleat, joins the other clan leaders at a gathering at Castleton for games and meetings. There he meets Mary of Castleton, the eldest daughter of the laird. There is an attraction between them. When Mary is abducted by an English Lieutenant and sails away in Don’s boat, he follows to regain Mary and his boat. That journey leads to her rescue and a subsequent romance along the way. however, her previous captor does not give up his quest to have her for his own. Interesting story and great characters.
this was a very different read for me. I have heard of Scottish / highlander romance novels and have started one or two. this however was the first I completed. I did enjoy the story and the characters. I ended up listing to it in audiobook form and I enjoyed that very much. it was nice to listen to the story with an acsent. I may read more of this series or other books from this trope. this was a different pace for me but still, a fun read.
Working for the Jacobite cause and avoiding marriage
Working for the Jacobite cause and avoiding marriage are both difficult tasks. Especially for someone who’s rescuing the lady he doesn’t want to admit he’s falling in love with.
First heroine, Mary, captures you attention from the first page until the last .
The twists and turns of the plot kept me reading until the wee hours. If you love reading about handsome highlanders and their fair ladies, you will be enthralled with The Valiant Highlander.
Loved the story and characters…just one pet peeve from an editor’s viewpoint…the word “nonplussed”, which I note Ms Jarecki uses in all of the books I’ve read, properly means the opposite of her usage.
Loved it - Period piece...historical fiction/romance set in early Scotland. Love Amy's treatment of her characters. If you like Outlander, fare to say you'll love Amy Jarecki's books too.
The Valiant Highlander is a fiction novel based on real characters during the Jacobean era. The Highlanders are at the sharp end of this time of unrest.
Donald MacDonald, the Baronet of Sleat is a Highlander living in Glasgow under the guise of a businessman who works towards helping his fellow Jacobites.
Mary of Castleton is the Chieftain's eldest. Having lost her mother at the tender age of twelve, she is responsible for the keep of her household and her three siblings. She also cares for her father who lost his leg during the war.
Donald attends the Highlands Games where he first meets Mary. She is dressed in her father's garbs whilst teaching her younger brother to shoot a gun. Mistaking her for a male, Donald issues a challenge for a contest which is readily accepted by Mary. He is not easily beaten but he soon finds out that he has met his match! Then he discovers that she is a lady but unlike any other, he has ever met. Oh dear! Not a good start and they seem to enjoy rubbing each other the wrong way. Nevertheless, they are both intrigued by each other but Donald has no time for a woman in his life. His cause comes first. Besides, someone like Mary wouldn't fit in his circles. She wears trousers. Shoots a gun. Climbs trees, to name a few of her unladylike attributes!
Lieutenant MacLeod thinks that he can do as he pleases. He steals Donald's ship and abducts Mary at the same time. He is obsessed by her and she despises him. Donald organises a rescue mission and he himself goes after Mary who is being taken through a different route. She is no spring chicken and plots her own escape and luckily enough she comes across Donald. They have a rough journey but somehow this brings them closer to each other and Mary eventually ends up in his Glasgow residence where she meets his sister.
MacLeod doesn't give up very easily and puts one obstacle after another in their paths. By the time that Mary and Donald realise that they have deep feelings for each other, MacLeod has gone a step too far and everything looks lost for them. Can they rebound from his devious deeds?
This novel is very well written. A fantastic plot with well portrayed characters. There is danger around every corner. Traitors are everywhere and the Jacobites have to fight to retain what's rightfully theirs. The interactions between Mary and Donald are quite fun to watch and the growing love between them is something beautiful. The loyalty between the clans is admirable.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well paced novel full of danger, betrayal, love and laughter.
When Sir Donald MacDonald, Baronet of Sleat meets trews-wearing, musket-wielding, redheaded Mary of Castleton, he’s completely flummoxed. Such a woman would never fit in to his aristocratic way of life. And Mary wants nothing to do with her father’s wishes for her betrothal. Indeed, the two agree on one thing: They are completely, utterly and inarguably incompatible.
But when Mary is abducted from Dunscaith Castle and spirited away in Sir Donald’s sea galley, the baronet has no choice but to mount a rescue. When his plans are thwarted at every turn, Donald and Mary are thrown in a tumultuous a race for their very lives. Though destiny brings them together, Don must face the truth smoldering in the recesses of his heart. Can he cast aside his ideals and declare his love for the saucy Highland lass?
My Thoughts:
Book #2 of the Highland Defender series, this is another winner from the incredible Amy Jarecki. Although a work of fiction it contains main characters who were very much real people. It is very much like Philippa Gregory's well known historical fiction works and I found myself totally engaged. So much so I could not put it down. I finished this book in under 24 hours. I have read other books by Amy Jarecki, but I would venture to say this is the best one yet. I did not read the first book in this series, but I would say each one could very well be read as standalones and not miss anything. If you like your historical fiction with romance, this page turner is definitely for you. This book is a solid 5 star in this readers opinion. I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this book. It has an interesting and somewhat unusual plot and what I loved best - it has strong characters. Both, the hero and the heroine are amazing and even though it is not that unusual as an idea it is nice to see how the very proper, very arrogant Sir Donald MacDonald, Baronet of Sleat falls for the not very proper but very courageous Mary of Castleton who can shoot better than many men and who doesn't care for proper etiquette.
Of course it all starts with an abduction - or rather with a competition. Or a madman. Or - anyway, when Mary is abducted, it is Sir Donald who goes after her. Very quickly things get very rough and the two of them run for their very lives. Mutual respect turns to a bit more than respect but will Don be able to overcome his ideals of a perfect society wife?
This fast-paced story, set shortly after the massaker of Glencoe with all the restrictions for the Scots that followed afterwards, is gripping and well told. Some parts of it are foreseeable but, hey, that's why I read romance, I want the hard guy fall for the wallflower or the woman who is not meek and not "perfect", so....no problem there. The characters are interesting and well developed and I liked how the historical events were woven into the plot.
