Welcome to the world of M.C. FRANK's books, where characters aren't going to have an easy time of it: They will find themselves in icy-cold dystopian worlds where kissing is forbidden (among other things), or in green forests ruled by evil Sheriffs. If they're in Jane Austen's England, they have to be running away from a traumatic childhood, or if they are in our contemporary world, they're scared they'll die before they have finished high school. That sort of thing.
Don't worry, though, she knows we all need a little hope and joy in our lives, so there's a good dose of those as well in everything she writes.
M.C. Frank (writer, reader, designer, physicist and teacher, to name a few) has been living in a world of stories ever since she can remember (that's before she knew how to write). She started writing them down when she could no longer stand the characters in her head screaming at her to give them life, and while those first scribblings weren't exactly good (nor were they books, although she insisted on calling them that), they were enough for her to discover her passion in life.
She got her university degree in physics a few years ago (yes, she's like Sheldon, only a bit crazier!) and is now free to pursue her love of reading and writing, as well her free-lance job as editor-in-chief. She lives with her 'dude' in a home filled with candles, laptops and notebooks, where she rearranges her overflowing bookshelves every time she feels stressed.
Which is often, since (as you might have noticed) she doesn't pick the easiest subjects for her novels.

So this review is a bit difficult, because I have conflicting feelings. I think that is probably appropriate though given that the characters do as well. Ill just dive right in.

This book is about Robin Hood and Ru, and girl (no less than Maid Marian) disguised as a boy to kill Robin. How she tries, and fails, repeatedly to kill him and ends up saving him each and every time because a girl truly can't be expected to kill the man she loves.

Something that I both like and dislike is that the entire book takes place over just two/three days. I don't like it because I feel like we didn't get very far. However, emotionally, I think that taking the time to let the characters actually talk and think and feel is wonderful!! So much is skipped over when authors time jump and I was really interested to see the characters have the thoughts and actually develop and reason for themselves.

Sleep Robin Hood is the third book in the Outlaw series, and while I can agree that it defiantly Can be read on its own, I would personally recommend starting from the beginning. Robins men all have two names, which was not explained to me as a new reader until about 70% into the book . So it was often confusing because the author would switch between them very often and it was difficult for me to keep it all straight. Also I think I would feel more familiar and connected to the characters if I had read the first two. I understand why they have multiple names, and I wasn't completely lost, but I feel like it kept me from liking them as much as I could have. With the exception of Alis, she is amazing.

I don't know how to explain this any other way than how I feel, but I was glad to see it explained just HOW MUCH Marian had to sacrifice and endure because she is a woman. Yes, Robin was in pain and miserable because of what had happened between them in the past, but Marian, my goodness. She literally sacrificed Everything to keep him safe and to protect him and then in the end, she did the very hardest thing to do, for him, because she had to be the one to save him, again. I feel truly sad for her but am in awe of her strength. Yes she is portrayed as physically strong, but her emotional strength is so great to see.

This is the first book that I have read by M.C. Frank, and I think it is a very different writing style that what I am used to. I enjoyed this book and am planning to read more by her, but it took a while for me to get into. I am glad I kept going and I would like to see what happens to these characters next.

And the story continues!
Book 3 of the Outlaw series, Sleep, Robin Hood, was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
This book has me questioning what was going to happen at every turn. The fear of someone getting caught, dying, or being found out. I was always on my toes.
I do have to say though, I wanted to slap Ru and Robin so many times through this book. Stop being so stubborn and blind.
The one thing I didn't enjoy was the constant flash backs. Both charcters would start thinking of the past, which I love a good backstory, but it was the same story many of the times and I would am tend to just skim those areas until I found something new or the flash back was over.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and am curious to see what happens next.

‘This is the land of traitors and betrayal. Where fear, hunger and threats reign instead of the king. This is the land of no hope’.

Robin Hood and his not-so-merry companion return in the third installment of The Outlaws series by M.C. Frank. As long as the evil Sheriff rules the land, there’s no peace for them even in their beloved Sherwood forest. There are friends to rescue and enemies to defeat, but who can survive when the long-hidden secrets get revealed?

If I were to describe this book with one word, it would be INTENSE. It’s not very long, but it’s certainly abounding in action: there’s an archery competition, a dramatic escape from the Sheriff’s dungeon, there are sword fights, blood, tears, betrayal, and much more. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, you keep worrying about the characters, wanting to know what happens next, but on the other hand - being scared to read the next chapter.

The intensity doesn’t apply just to adventures Robin, Ru and their friends are going through, but - what I personally loved the most - to their inner struggles as well, to memories haunting their minds, the feelings motivating them, but also holding them back. A big part of the book contains of Robin and Ru’s inner dialogues, which I absolutely don’t mind, because it adds an incredible depth to those characters and makes me love them even more. I love how strong they both are, despite their brokenness, and how they care for the others more than for themselves. They remind me of the verse from 2 Corinthians: ‘We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed’.

I said it many times before, but I’m gonna say it again: M.C. Frank is an amazing writer. The way she writes about emotions moves me deeply and makes me forget the characters she created aren’t real. If you ever wondered if writing can be called art, just read one of her books.

‘Sleep Robin Hood’ is a beautifully written, engaging and moving story about justice, forgiveness, love and betrayal. I can’t wait for the next book from this series to come out, but I already recommend them all wholeheartedly!

Once I picked up Sleep, Robin Hood, I could not put it down. I found the book a good mix between introspection and action. For some the inner dialogue might go on a bit too long, but it was written in a way that only added to the story, was not boring and brought depth to the characters themselves. It got quite intense towards the end, though in general the book had me anxious to see what happens. To be honest, at times, I got a bit impatient with some of the characters repeating their own thoughts, but that was mostly with the main characters, which ends up endearing them all the more to you - if you stay patient ;) At least the story is written in such a way that you enjoy reading even the parts you get impatient with, so that is a testimony of a well written story I believe! I also appreciated the conclusion, of course the story continues and I can't wait to read the next instalment, but it was satisfying in the end and creates expectancy for the next book, to see what happens with Ru and what Robin will do when he finds out the truth - which can either break him or bring healing. Overall I appreciated the complex emotions due to different experiences that the characters went through and I thought it consistent enough. Of course this is not a super dark book, then the consequences of what happened to them in the dungeons and with the torture would have been more severe, but I thought it was well enough portrayed with the level of intensity for this book. This is the kind of book that I personally enjoy, where there is light and darkness, pain and hope and where the characters are not perfect, but the are transformed as they face their own demons and hopefully, end up choosing the path of forgiveness, healing and love.

I love a good Robin Hood story, and this one has potential. BUT it needs to be refined. The writing feels like a rough draft. All 4 books, if edited to remove redundancies and fix some inconsistencies, could be an excellent 500-page novel. My copy was missing chapter 26.

Spoilers:
Seriously, how dumb is Robin? I got it. The dungeon was dark, and it's been 5 years.

If Ru is as beautiful as she is disscribed to be, then there is no way she could have passed as a boy, and I'm sorry he only noticed how beautiful she after he saw her tits? I know he's a man, but come on.

Every time Ru's eternal dialog gets to, I love him. She acts surprised like she didn't just discover this during the last 20 internal dialogs.

At one point, she tells him to live verbatim to what she said in the dungeon before she was "killed" to try and reveil who she is and wonders if he even remembers it. He just said it to her in their timeline two days ago when they had a heart to heart punching match.

The book is filled with errors like this. A good editor, proofreader would go a long way.

I was given this ARC (advanced reader copy) of Sleep Robin Hood (Outlaws Book Three) by MC Frank in exchange for an honest review. I’m always a mix of excited and concerned with an ARC. I love reading a brand new book, that hardly anyone has heard of yet, but sometimes they are really rough. This book quickly alleviated my fears and was easy and pleasing to read.

This book is a retelling of the exploits of Robin Hood and his merry band, which makes it easy to learn the characters, most of us are already familiar with the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin, Will, Little John, etc. What makes this interesting is the new slant to these characters, I never think of Robinhood as being hesitant or unsure. The narrator though, seems like a new character. She’s being pulled in so many directions by different factions and emotions. In this case, me jumping into the series on Book Three made this a little confusing, but not insurmountable.

MC Frank keeps the pace rolling with this installment in her Robin Hood retelling.

UsualIy I would pass yet another Robin Hood tale but the beautiful covers drew me in. I'm so glad they did! These are by far the most enjoyable stories of the famous hero.

The first three books in the series captivated and kept me turning the pages to read more. Sleep Robin Hood takes its own compelling place beside the others.

I feel for Robin's sorrows. I feel for the troubles and mistakes of his companions and I long for him to discover Ru's real identity.

The story isn't finished yet. Although Robin discovers more about Ru than he ever imagined, he doesn't know the whole truth yet. Looking forward to the next book already.

Sleep Robin Hood is the third book in the Outlaws series. Despite not having read the rest, I enjoyed this story a lot.

Ru is the youngest member of the Robin Hood band, is trained by Robin himself, but he keeps two dark secrets, and was previously trained (and tortured) by Gisborne, the enemy of the band.
The mission: Infiltrate into the gang and assassinate Robin. The secret tortures Ru, he does not want to fulfill his mission but not doing it will have its consequences.
Ru needs to find a way to not fulfill his mission, before both of the secrets are discovered and need to show that belongs with the band.

It is a short novel, full of adventures, reads quickly and leaves you wanting more.

Not The Robin Hood I Grew Up With

There is a lot that feels familiar, but from the start, you know that this telling of the story of Robin Hood is very different. This begins with Maid Marian being an assassin out to kill Robin Hood.

The story is told from the first-person narratives of Robin Hood and Ru (Marian). The tale is well-told and the world-view is nicely developed. We gain a lot of insight into the primary characters as well as other participants in the saga (including Robin's band of outlaws).

This was well worth the read. There is a definite conclusion as well as the set-up for the next book in the series.

It is really annoying when you see book 3 of 3 and so it seems you can read the whole series, but no!
Anyhow, I had read the first two of this series when they first came out and thoroughly enjoyed them.
The new spin on old characters was great.

However, this third book was such a chore to get through.
Half of it seemed to just keep repeating itself over and over. The number of times I had to read Marian's thoughts, which seemed repeated verbatim, was so frustrating and annoying. Then the same with Robin.
If I see a fourth book written, I would read it to see the outcome, but I wouldn't be in a rush to do so, which is a real shame because the storyline is really good.

This is a great retelling of Robin Hood. The story shows Robin Hood as just another man with all the faults and weaknesses, not truly the hero in the minds of the poor and ailing that he and his Merry Band of "Men" aid. I kept thinking what would Robin do when he found out who Ru actually was but it wasn't to be by the end of this installment. Guess I'll find out next time! This book is highly recommended.

Wow, this installment of the Outlaws series was so intense and EPIC. The characters, the plot, the endless twists and revelations, how detailed Frank’s writing is, it felt as though I was actually there, in a corner, watching it all unfold.
Without going into too much detail, I will say I loved how real Robin Hood and Ru were. Their strengths and faults could be felt deeply and I found myself rooting for them from the beginning of the book. ‘Sleep Robin Hood’ is a fantastic retelling and I cannot wait to find out more in the next book.

Sleep Robin Hood is a fantastic continuation of the Outlaws series. With action, adventure, romance, suspense, and everything in-between this story hooked me. I can't wait for the next year to pass so I can read the next installation in this retelling. The characters have such passion and feelings that go between hope, despair, and betrayal. I don't want to say too much for fear of giving something away but this series is a well-written depiction of the tale of Robin Hood.

This is not the Robin Hood you remember, it's a complex, well written story with fleshed out and a very interesting cast of characters. The story is full of intrigue and action. I'm going to get the first 2 books (luckily they're in KU) and then read this one again to get a better reading experience and will update my review. I'm so looking forward to it!! I may wait until the 4th book comes out and binge read.

It is a well written depiction of Robin Hood, but with a twist. Maid Marian is an assassin out to kill Robin Hood. Say What??? Yes, this was definitely a book that is worth the read!!

What, exactly, is an “Outlaw”?
Built on the structure of the Robin Hood saga, this version is refreshing and the characters well drawn, particularly Robin Hood and “Maid Marian” (my favorite!). There is intrigue, drama, deception, loyalty, and even sparks. A series worthy of your time and imagination! Anticipating Book 4!

Great read for fans of Robin Hood tales or for fairytale twists. I feel like I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read the other books first, but I admit it was the cover that stole my attention. Now I need to go back and read the rest and I think the places I was confused will make a lot more sense.

Definitely the best out of the three so far but you know what surprised me? Getting to the end with things left unfinished and realizing it is not a trilogy and the next one is not out yet. Devastated! The first three books were leading for a big reveal about Ru to Robin and we only got half of the reveal. That’s all I want now though!! But anyways, felt like a lot more happened in this book in terms of action, events, progress in relationships, etc. so that was nice. Sad at the one betrayal revealed and surprised at the death that happened at the end, it seemed to quick, but who knows what will happen next.
