A fun, action-packed mystery with a superhero twist.

For Carmen, family reunions were all about safe-cracking and adrenaline-fueled escapes from the city's fanciest high-rises. That's just par for the course when your biological mother's a melodramatic supervillain and you've been raised by two of her most loyal henchmen. But after Carmen tries to prove herself in an unauthorized mission, she's unexpectedly fired and shipped off to high school. After years spent incapacitating grown men with nothing but a scrunchie, eleventh grade is a definite downgrade. Until a student drops dead.

Determined that her criminal career can't be over at the ripe old age of sixteen, Carmen dives back into the city's underbelly for the investigation, rubbing elbows with villains and heroes alike. If she can solve the mystery, her mother will have to reinstate her, especially if she is truly being framed like Carmen suspects.

But the deeper she digs, the more she wonders: Am I protecting my mother from being framed? Or playing right into her hands?

It’s Hard Out Here For A Villain Kid...

I want to start by saying I love the title of this book! It definitely reeled me in, and the story was just as great as the title. Carmen, our main character, was definitely a villain kid. She definitely had the attitude, plotting, and violent tendencies for it. But I guess that’s to be expected when you’re raised by people who are on the wrong side of the moral compass. I won’t lie, in the beginning, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Carmen. But, as the story progresses she really grows into herself and starts to realize that she can choose her own path in life. She learns that just because you have a supervillain parent doesn’t mean you always have to follow in their footsteps. She quickly changed from someone I didn’t like so much into one of my faves.

This book was fun and action-packed with a mystery that kept me guessing until the end. The characters were great (both our “heroes” and villains alike) and they all had such interesting backgrounds (shout out to Felony Melanie because with a name like that how could not). There were a few grammatical and formatting errors. They don’t take away from the story at all, but there were enough that I felt I should mention it. Overall though, a really good book!

This was a fun take on the usual superheroes storyline, choosing supervillains -- and the daughter of one of the best/worst -- as the protagonist. The characters were interesting, though maybe some could have been deepened a little, but there were interesting heroes and villains, some rightly a touch over the top, as well as the side characters and an interesting premise. It's definitely a creative take on the genre. I'd be interested in reading more.

i received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via voracious readers only. all opinions are my own.

little miss villain easily became one of my favorites after finishing it! the story was action-packed and kept me hooked onto every word, there was not a single part where i got bored and had to force myself to read through. i found the writing style and dialogue pretty funny and perfect for a ya novel. although there was a romantic subplot, it did not take over the main mystery and it was pretty sweet.

although i was not carmen's biggest fan in the beginning, i grew to love her and how she learned to let others get close to her and to choose her own path in life. i especially loved her sassy personality, even if sometimes it was not the best time or place for it. the other characters all had interesting backstories and personalities that i loved as well, no matter if they were a “villain” or a “hero.”

i'm very glad i gave this a chance because i do not regret reading it at all! it'll definitely hold a place on my favorites list even in the future.
