Acceptance comes at a price…

Exiled from her warrior people and declared genetically sub-optimal, Avaria dreams of one day proving herself in combat and re-joining her alien kin. Until then she lives as an outcast, carving out a life for herself in a perilous world.

When their leader Zileca approaches her with an offer for salvation, Avaria thinks she’s finally found her chance. But she soon learns that acceptance comes at a high price. Forced to face the other outcasts in a brutal fight to prove her worth, Avaria must use all of her training if she wants to stay alive. The winner will be welcomed into her people as an equal. The losers will be left to die.

But as Avaria climbs the ranks, she begins to realize that even if she wins, Zileca’s offer is far more sinister than she ever could have imagined…

Interesting debut- very different then expected

This was very different than expected and I felt that the story was just getting started before it ended.

I think a little more hope and happiness was needed, but maybe she will have chance for it in the next book.

A little more character development and some friends for the heroine would be nice too.

I plan on reading the next book in the series

“They were finally being thrown a lifeline, but it was covered in thorns. Grabbing hold of it would come at a price.”

Can someone please come pick my jaw up off the floor? Because I think it might be stuck down there after reading this book. M. G. Hopkins’ absolutely jaw-dropping debut not only had me sucked in from the very first page, but left had me thinking about it long after I had finished reading.

First of all, Avaria is so sooo amazing. What can I say, I LOVE powerful female characters who take nothing from anyone. She even has an incredible level of attitude and sass that I can only dream of achieving. She’s not perfect, no one is, not even aliens, but inspiring all the same. Despite the many, MANY challenges thrown at her she still manages to defy all odds.

The story itself is very creative and fast paced, but not overwhelmingly so. For the most part, it flows smoothly in an easy to follow way, even with all of the unpredictable plot twists that keep you on the edge of your seat. I don’t read science fiction very often but found that the storyline really stood out in comparison to other stories. You easily got a sense of the world and character dynamics and background.

I cannot wait to see where the rest of this series goes, the ending came way too soon and left us on such a big cliffhanger, I will be impatiently awaiting the next book! I’d recommend to any Sci-Fi fans, especially if you liked books like The Lunar Chronicles, Scythe or The Illuminae Files!

Bonus point: the author herself is literally amazing, I mean how many people can say they’ve published a book while still a teenager?!
