Detective Constable Cassie Rowan was constantly on the go; it was hard for her to toe the line as when her mind went off in a tangent, she tended to follow her gut instinct, instead of her boss' instructions. With a serial rapist operating in Liverpool, Cassie was determined to capture him before more harm came to his victims. But she was also on the rapist's radar, and she had to think more creatively than he did. When his latest victim was killed, they thought there must be a second person involved, as the MO had changed. Would they capture the criminal intent on making people's lives a misery?

Before He Kills Again is the 1st in the Detective Cassie Rowan series by Margaret Murphy and I enjoyed it very much. Fast paced with non stop action, it was hard to put down, especially toward the end. Cassie was a tough, determined young woman, surrounded by a mixture of timid; "been there, done that"; and "got your back sista" cops who left Cassie feeling on her own. A great start to a new-to-me series which I recommend.

This was a dark, gritty, fast paced, edgy thriller with such twists and turns that made me feel anxious at times. I read a lot of crime thrillers but very few have made me feel the need to take a breather while reading them because the twists and the disturbing description of the crimes committed have been quite overwhelming to my senses.

Phew it was intense!!

This is the first book in the series involving DC Cassie Rowan and psychoanalyst Alan Palmer and the first book I have read by the author Margaret Murphy.
I received an e-Arc of the book from the publisher Joffe Books and the author via NetGalley.

DC Cassie Rowan is working undercover on the streets of Liverpool hoping to run into the man who's been assaulting sex workers. He's had seven victims so far ... but now his eyes are set on Cassie. So far he hasn't killed any of the women, but it's only a matter of time.

Cassie is fairly new and her supervisor thinks she's not a team player, although her back up hasn't been as helpful as she hoped. Her boss blames her for their mistakes.

Cassie is also trying to balance her home life with her professional one. She's responsible for the care of her younger brother since both parents have died. He doesn't seem to be real co-operative with Cassie's rules and manages to get mixed up with others who have no sterling qualities.

This has a well executed plot, a really good book that you don't want to put down because you want to see what will happen next. There's lots of action with a few twists and turns. The characters are skillfully drawn. As this is book one of a series, I wait with tapping toes to see how they interact with each other in book two. The ending was unexpectedly violent.. a real nail-biter.

Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books 'N All Book Promotions / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

A brand new series and an intense read featuring DC Cassie Rowan, a no-nonsense copper on the streets of Liverpool, taking no prisoners with the villains or her colleagues. Also featured is psychiatrist Dr Alan Palmer whose clients may or may not fit the profile of the person the police are searching for.

DC Cassie Rowan is young but a bright detective with a promising future. She's had a difficult past when her parents were killed in a car accident several years before and she took over the care of her then ten year old brother Neil so he wouldn't go into care. Their older brother Alex was co-parenting with her until he got a job offer in New York and four weeks after that he was gone. Now her brother is 15 and going through the usual teenage angst issues which Cassie must now face alone with Alex now so far away.

As if parenting her 15 year old brother isn't enough, Cassie must also contend with the childish antics of her colleagues when they would much rather be sitting in a cosy warm car taking bets on her ability to catch a suspect on her own when they should be backing her up with assistance. When the suspect escapes her clutches, but not without some fight, it's Cassie who is in the firing line from her superiors and not the boys who should have been having her back.

The suspect that had absconded but may well have been caught had DCs Wicks and Finch been assisting her was wanted in connection with a string of serial rapes that have taken place on the streets of Liverpool. He doesn't kill the women...but he abducts them, robs, rapes, tortures, strangles them before reviving them to strangle them again and beats them half to death before instructing them to wash down completely and leaving them naked on the city's waste lands. Dubbed the Furman, so far he has only targeted prostitutes which is why Cassie walks the streets dressed in her cheapest get-up to blend in with the rest of the girls. But now that his MO has been exposed, he begins seeking out other innocent young women.

When Emma Hammond is discovered in the same way as the previous victims, Cassie realises he has upped the ante and changed his MO to lower risk victims. And then Penny Kominski, visiting from London, enters the police station hysterical wanting to speak to someone. It turns out she was approached and abducted by someone who did not appear as a threat until it was too late. She managed to escape and took herself to the police station to report the incident. But thus far, any descriptions of the attacker have been vague to say the least, with the suspect wearing a hoodie and scarf masking his features. Cassie knows she must find this attacker before he ups his ante yet again and this time starts killing his victims.

Also featured is Dr Alan Palmer, a psychiatrist with an equally difficult home life. He and his wife are separated and share custody of their 4 year old daughter Lucy after an incident that shattered their family and gave their daughter nightmares. Dr Palmer and his colleague Dr Atherton often share a drink or two swapping stories and case notes on current clients. They become concerned when both have clients who may or may not fit the profile of the serial rapists lurking Liverpool's darkened streets. One of them shows some disturbing behaviour in stalking and keeping track of even his psychiatrist's movements. Are they guilty or simply paranoid?

BEFORE HE KILLS AGAIN is a gritty and intense read that packs a punch or two that will have you second guessing yourself in an attempt to unmask the villain. But what made me want to toss the book in anger many times were the attitudes of the likes of Wicks and the guileless Finch, who really needed to grow a pair. Wicks angered me no end with his lazy arse attitude. Firstly when he was sitting in a comfy cosy car taking bets when he should have been assisting Cassie at the beginning, then again when he failed to own up to his part in why the Furman escaped and then most notably when he flat out refused to believe one of the prostitutes, Tasha, had been raped. Instead he was adamant she had been beaten up by her pimp, of which she has none, because there was no damage to her face...only bruises where they could not be seen. And pimps don't like to damage the merchandise so therefore in Wicks' opinion Tasha was not raped but just beaten up by her pimp. And Finch? That guy really needs to grow a pair and stand up to the bullying tactics of guys like Wicks.

It's the presence of characters like those that make me not want to bother picking up another in the series because honestly I am sick to death of phallus measuring misogynistic detectives. I am tired of angst among the ranks. I want a crime thriller I can enjoy without all the bullshit.

However, if you love your crime thrillers with plenty of punch, gritty and intense...then look no further than BEFORE HE KILLS AGAIN because this one just might be right up your alley. But for me, it was the supporting characters that annoyed me so much I don't wish to rejoin them again.

Recommended for fans of intense and gritty crime thrillers not for the fainthearted.

A new series with a young female detective… working hard to keep her professional and personal life balanced. This is not easy because having to raise your younger brother after the dead of your parents is not a walk in the park. The younger brother is a typical 15 year old; doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t want to work hard for school, blames his big sister Cassie for everything that is wrong in his life. She loves him dearly and that’s good because otherwise she would probably wring his neck. Older brother Alex left the country and cannot be bothered with Cassie and Neil. He plays a minor role in this story. I hope that in coming books in this series both Alex and Neil will see Cassie for what she is: she is great (although not perfect).
In her professional life, there are some very, very obnoxious male colleagues that make Cassie’s life very hard. Despite everything, she tries to do her work, catching the bad guys, as good as she can. What not always helps, is her tendency to speak before she thinks.
There are actually a couple of storylines that all flow nicely together in the end. I warmed to Cassie and at times I could really wring the necks of her horrible sexist colleagues. Snappy dialogues, lots of twists and turns and a small cliff-hanger that hints to the second book in the series make the start of this series a very good one.

Thanks to Netgalley for a digital reading copy of this title.

Before He Kills Again is the first instalment in the DC Cassie Rowan and psychiatrist Dr Palmer series and if Murphy keeps up the standard produced here we will have another unmissable series on our hands in no time at all. A serial rapist is stalking women, with most of his victims being prostitutes on the streets of Liverpool. He abducts, rapes, and tortures and leaves them used and abused like trash but at least they're alive, right? The only problem is no one has any helpful descriptions of him and so the local police are at a loss with no idea how to proceed. Knowing so little about him they refer to him as the Furman due to his proclivity to wrap his victims in a fur stole. So the police decide to send young police officer Cassie undercover as a call girl in the holes that she will either be targeted by the brutal attacker or will bear witness to him scouting the area.

This is a captivating, intense and well-written police procedural and you know you can always rely on critically acclaimed Murphy to provide a pacy rollercoaster ride of emotions, twists and turns, a terrifying villain and a cast of engaging and otherwise likeable characters. Cassie Rowan is a strong female lead and a great protagonist in that she is both relatable and believable and has a tenacious personality although she tends to have bright ideas and goes off on her own to investigate them often without informing her team. That said, I appreciate characters who are independent thinkers. It is a complex, suspenseful, interesting and entertaining book and one I thoroughly enjoyed. I look forward with anticipation to learning more about her both personally and professionally and the development of the interplay between her and Palmer. Many thanks to Joffe for an ARC.

DC Cassie Rowan is a young police detective with a difficult home life. She’s trying to raise her younger brother after the death of their parents. There’s also an older brother but he resides in America and doesn’t share much of the burden. She’s a headstrong woman with the knack to disobey orders and follow up on her own instincts.
There’s a serial rapist lurking the streets of Liverpool. He abducts prostitutes and robs, rapes, tortures, beats, and kicks them half death to leave them naked on waste grounds. The unsub is labelled “the Furman.” Cassie has been on kerb watch for months now and befriended some of the working girls. When a student and a businesswoman are also targeted, the press starts taking notice.
There’s also the story of psychologists Palmer and Atherton and 2 of their clients who might fit the profile or not. They both show some very unusual behaviour and you don’t know if they’re just clouding the picture or that one of them or both are guilty of something criminal.

It’s both a police procedural as well as a psychological thriller. The story is told ingenuously. You’re left guessing until the end and the suspense rises with every page. I really had to keep reading through the night because I wanted to finish it. It was sooo good. It’s amongst my favourites of 2020.
I loved Cassie and I certainly plan to read the next books in this new series but I can’t imagine that any DCI will take the level of insubordination she shows. She’s very outspoken and independent, but just a bit OTT.
For those not comfortable with British English, there’s an extensive glossary at the end of the book. I didn’t have that problem; so I’m not a good judge about its usefulness.
I thank Joffe Books and Netgalley for the free ARC they provided me with; this is my honest, unbiased opinion of it.

This is the second Margaret Murphy book I have read (the first being Darkness Falls) and all I can say is 'where have you been hiding?' because I have definitely been missing out. But the good news is the brilliant Joffe Books found her so I can put that right.

If you like gritty, fast paced, adrenaline pumping thrillers you will love this. There is little graphic description of the assaults so nothing to give you nightmares but that doesn't make it any less thrilling.

Detective Cassie Rowan. She was flung head first into parenthood when her parents died in an accident and she had to fight for custody of her brother and the fight goes on. To say she has had a difficult life is an understatement. She doesn't have time for soft-soaping she just wants the job done, the killers caught and case closed and that puts her at loggerheads with her boss and some of her colleagues. I do love feisty characters so this is a big tick for me. The other characters are all well crafted and develop well over the course of the book.

The case is a difficult one a sadistic killer who rapes and strangles his victims repeatedly leaving them damaged for life. There are several suspects but the evidence is sparse which means the team are on a race against time to identify the killer before he kills again. Cassie has a prime suspect in her sights but he has alibis and her boss and colleagues think she is way off the mark. Who is right?

This is an excellent book one that I really enjoyed. Longer than my usual read but it was all adrenaline pumping and the pages kept turning.

Looking forward to more from this talented author in the meantime I am catching up with the backlist.

Received this copy via NetGalley in exchange for feedback.

This is my first time reading anything by this author and I was captivated from the beginning. Not an easy book to read because of the violence/brutality in the attacks on sex workers. DC Cassie Rowan isn't perfect. She lacks tact, has a hard time respecting authority and doesn't always follow rules & regulations. Her doggedness and determination makes her good at what she does but also makes it difficult for her to work with others and them with her.

The scenes were well written and characters ran the gamut from likeable to detested. It stuns me the lengths someone will go to to justify their actions or cover up their wrongdoings. Thank goodness there is an officer like Rowan to shine a light and not sweep the filth under the rug. Am hoping there will be more books with Rowan and Palmer as well as Chan because I would definitely read more!

The book opens with Cassie literally hot on the heels of serial predator, the Furman. Cassie has been working undercover posing as a sex worker on the cold streets, & now it seems that the Furman is in her sights. Alas, the misogynistic prattery of her fellow officers, especially Wicks, allows the Furman to make his escape leaving Cassie with minor injuries & major grievances. Her co-workers are either plain old misogynists (Wicks) or ineffectual enablers (Finch), even the female DCI Warman seems to have it in for Cassie.

Home isn't any easier since she has been looking after her younger teenage brother, Neil, since their parents died & older brother, Alex, swanned off to New York leaving Cassie holding all the responsibility. Cassie & Neil's relationship has become more difficult as he gets older & she returns from a particular gruelling shift to find that he has thrown a party & the house is full of teenagers, including the local drug dealer. Meanwhile psychotherapist Alan Palmer is dealing with a couple of particularly taxing clients whilst his marriage collapses & he tries to keep his daughter's life as normal as possible. Little by little, Palmer finds himself drawn into the Furman case.

There are several quite graphic scenes of sexual violence in this book & alongside the relentlessly nasty Wicks, I found it quite gruelling to read. I think it would have helped if Cassie Rowan was a character that you could empathise with, but she is so impulsive & pig-headed & just fails to learn that sometimes diplomacy will work where brute force won't. It may work in a fictional setting, but I'd bet she wouldn't last a year in the actual job. It all became rather mentally tiring to read. I'd already requested to read an ARC of the second book but probably wouldn't have done if I had read this first. Still, I try to give an author at least two books just in case the series rapidly improves.

TW: graphic scenes of violence/sexual violence, misogyny.

Detective CASSIE ROWAN is a young unmarried policewoman assigned to work undercover on the streets of Liverpool trying to find a serial killer who has been brutally assaulting sex workers. Cassie blames herself and Detective, Wicks, for not catching him as she herself almost became a victim.

But another brutal killing happens in a church, and the serial killer's technique is much like Jack Ripper's. Is it Jack the Ripper? Is it the Furman, a mob boss? Soon again, as she and her team search for the answers, her very life is in danger as she tries to uncover who the serial murderer is.

What a suspenseful, mysterious, thriller with some exciting twists! But, I do admit I was sometimes confused with the broad cast of different characters. Also, the book may have been more enjoyable had it contained a lot less swearing. However, I truly enjoyed the narration by Bianca Amato. Her ability to apply the right accents were impressive.

Earns 4 Stars.

The was my first book by Margaret Murphy and it won’t be the last! OMG, this was good. I loved Rowan and she was my hero. This novel had all the excitement and was well round for a movie or TV series. What do you get when you have strong female detective, a therapist and a serial killer???
Well, you’ll have to read or listen to it to find out. Loved the writing, the pace, and the ending. Lot of suspense and mystery. I highly recommend it.
I chose to listen to this book on audio and it was 12 hours and 50 minutes long. Narrated by Bianca Amato who did a fabulous job.

It seemed like it took me forever to get through this book, usually I'm a pretty fast reader, but this just seemed to drag on and on. I probably should have given up, but I did want to find out who the villain was. There wasn't any great mystery revealed, and the ending was over-the-top ridiculous.

Cassie was the worst detective, I hated her character. She should have been fired multiple times! She pouted like a child, was dangerously impulsive, and constantly made stupid decisions. I think this is going to be a series, but I don't want to spend any more time with Cassie.

I am new to this author and I found this book gripping from the start. The author has a very evocative turn of phrase that sets a scene vividly.
The setting is sinister and creepy, the fog that lingers over the city was quite disturbing with a Dickensian sort of vibe.
The main protagonist Cassie is a young, ballsy, headstrong, intuitive character banging her head against the glass ceiling of snide, sniping middle aged male colleagues and a female boss who fights against intuition to hold onto the rule book.
The plot surrounding a serial kidnapper and rapist is pacey and gripping, the sidebar of the therapists I found a little distracting though.
The ending is good and builds to a satisfying crescendo, unfortunately though towards the end I lost interest a little with all the breaking and entering going on! It could have reached its conclusion earlier, it felt slightly drawn out.
Overall a good read. Thank you to Netgalley and Joffe Books for the ARC and the opportunity to read and review.

Boy, oh boy! this was so good. POV's included the serial killer and his thoughts going into kidnapping people and then the thrill and excitement as he anticipated what he was going to do to them. SICK and DARK! I was so completely engrossed and invested in the plot and the characters, too. Or maybe I should say I loved some of them and hated the good bad guys so much that I loved the as a bad guy. lol

Cassie Rowan is the detective in this wonderful thriller and I loved her. Not everyone in the story loved her, however, as she was simply not valued for what she did. But her value was in how well she was able to sniff out crimes and how the victims were connected to the atrocities committed against them. And I must mention that it has a lot of twists and turns as all good thrillers should. I loved how much of a mystery this truly was.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for a free e-ARC in exchange for my honest opinion, which I have given.

For the first book in a new series, this one doesn’t hold back and delivers some solid punches. The story moved a bit slowly for me as I worked through the introductions of all the characters and trying to figure out where to place them in the story. I would have preferred that there had been less secondary characters introduced before I got to know who the key players were.

I enjoyed the story overall; I thought Cassie was a great character, full of the frustrations, insecurities and emotions that make us human. I admired her grit and determination to bring in the monsters who hunt the innocent of Liverpool as well as the struggles she faces raising her little brother and the worries she tries to hide away from her family, friends and colleagues. She is a supervisor’s worst nightmare, however. On more than one occasion, she is brought to task and given a verbal smack-down for not following orders. We don’t know but she may be unemployed in the next book.

There were so many characters that could have been the baddie in this story that I found it difficult to keep it all straight. I felt a lot of frustration for Cassie when she figures out who it is and her chain of command don’t want to hear it, believing they already have the suspect in custody.

There are quite a few loose threads at the end that annoyed me. Specifically, Detective Wicks and what happens to him as well as Cassie’s friend, Tasha. Hopefully, the next book will pick up some of these threads and tie them up.

I enjoyed meeting Dr. Palmer, the psychoanalyst contacted by Cassie as one of his patients may or may not be the rapist. There is an interesting side story about him and his practice and family life.

The audio edition of this story made this story more intense for me and I enjoyed the narration by Bianca Amato. Her performance brings to life the frustrations, fears, pain and horror experienced by these characters, making the story more vivid and realistic.

My Final Verdict: Overall, this is a gritty and sometimes graphic thriller that might disturb some readers with its intense scenes. Fans of twisty thrillers, police procedurals and mysteries will enjoy this one.

I liked the detective, Cassie, and liked the narrator, but I felt this story went on maybe longer than it needed to be.

I felt like Cassie deserved more focus in the story, and not so much of the filler characters. I found her interesting and she was young and determined. She was the best part of the story for me.

It seems this is a series, and I'd probably give it another go in hopes more focus is made on Cassie.
The writing was good, I just would have preferred less background characters. It had a lot of elements I like, just something about it wasn't quite what I was hoping for.

This story seemed to go on and on about the same thing, so much violence done to the women in the story. We get it, the psycho was violent and horrific. Some of the characters seemed like fillers and didn't really matter. The star female detective deserved so much better than what she got from her superiors, I often wonder if situations like this actually do happen to female detectives who just want to know the truth at hand!

The narration was great for this audiobook as well! Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me this ARC to read. I give it 3.5 stars.

This was a decent story, but it seemed repetitive and was quite graphic. I did not care for Detective Cassie Rowan at all. She came off as impulsive and immature and just plain unlikable. Being that she is the main protagonist, one of the few women in this field, and that these vicious attacks are specifically targeting women, I expected more from her….more maturity, level headedness, intelligence. Her character really took this story down a couple of notches. I’m not sure if I’m going to check out the next installment in this series or not. I love mystery/thrillers with female detective leads, so maybe I will. Hopefully Cassie will have done some growing.

Just an okay mystery. Not worth the violence.

I love getting into a new detective series and was so excited to read this novel by Margaret Murphy, who is a new author for me.

Cassie Rowan is a young and relatively new detective with seemingly inadequate back up from her team and and also has the sole carer role for her 16 year old brother.  As if life isn't hard enough she is tasked with tracking down a killer who is targeting sex workers.  Can she solve the case and save her reputation in time?

To begin with, this novel has a lot of characters and each chapter is told from a different perspective.  I had to think hard over the first part of the book to keep track of each character and it took a little while to get my head around them all but once I did and relaxed more into the narrative the plot was engrossing.

Cassie is a feisty and likable character who desperately wants to do her job well and seems to dislike the fact she has to reply on teamwork to achieve this.  She's pretty down to Earth and relatable, with a vulnerable side which makes her an excellent female protagonist.  I also feel this novel highlights issued faced by women in some jobs Cassie has to deal with these with minimum support from superiors.  The 'Furman' is twisted but realistic and seeing his perspective woven in-between chapters brings a terrifying aspect to the plot.  All the characters are developed well and I'm looking forward to some relationships being explored further in the next installment.

It's a longer novel than your average but the story unfolds quickly with plenty of action, twists and turns to keep the reader's attention.  There is an intensity to the whole narrative and at some points I was holding my breath and reading at a crazy spped to find out what was going to happen.

I really enjoyed this first in a new series and cannot wait to read the next installment.   recommended for crime fans who like the darker side.

An intense difficult read emotionally and literally. The book is engrossing, well written and properly researched, with a strong upfront female lead Rowan and a psychiatric analyst Mr. Palmer who have an interesting dynamic together and it's good to see this book is the first in a series by them.
Series of women are abducted, tortured, raped and returned scarred emotionally and physically for lifetime. Rowan works undercover as a night call girl trying to catch the culprit who aimed mostly street girls.
You will keep guessing and questioning your guess following the suspects the book suggests.
It is bad, really bad that the world has the sort of the Furman, or whoever is the sick, serial rapist and murderer..but what's million times worse is the presence of the sort of Wicks, and even Finch and Alex..The Furman isn't the norm, the world doesn't have them all around you, in your workplace even in your own home and they could and must be stopped and convicted for life..but what enraged me and made me want to throw the book away in anger couple of times are the likes of Wicks, Alex and Finch..these men are in our lives, they exist everywhere and they get away with it. sad but true. I wish books like this can make a change to stop the poisonous effect of such men. I wish the second book in the series redeem Rowan's right and condemns Wicks, it's outrageously unfair to let him off the hook easily.
Thanks NetGalley, Joffe Books and Margaret Murphy for providing a free copy to review. I am looking forward to the second book.

I received a free ebook of this title in exchange for a fair review.

This is the first in a new series featuring a somewhat loose cannon DC Cassie Rowan and a therapist, Alan Palmer.  In this introduction to the series, Rowan is being used as bait to try to trap a serial rapist on the streets.  The rapist moves through several victims as the book progresses.  Meanwhile, Alan Palmer has some patients that seem likely suspects and that draws him into this case.  Both Cassie and Alan have side plots concerning their personal lives that allow the readers more of a glimpse into who they are and perhaps why they act and react as they do.

Well written plot with plenty of possible suspects to sift through alongside Cassie.  There is also a strong recurring vein of blatant misogyny in both Cassie's treatment by her co-workers and in the treatment of rape victims and prostitutes.  Great start to a new series.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I liked Cassie even though she was a loose cannon and another officer who liked to go against her seniors. Sometimes though needs must in order to get to the bigger picture. She was fearless and tenacious and I felt she didn’t get the support from her boss. I hated Wicks, arrogant, misogynistic and typical of “old school” policing. I’d have tasered him if I’d had the chance.

The story is fast paced and kept me entertained. I’m looking forward to another one in the series we’re Wicks gets his comeuppance! Finch, also was as weak as water! Just saying ....

My thanks to the author and Joffe publishers for the ARC.

First time reading this author in a story which looks to be first in a new series and hopefully so. I liked the tautness of the story and how the author neatly pulled all the relevant issues together at the end. I also like Cassie, an almost rogue DC, trying to do the right thing and get justice for those wronged whilst being the parent to her teenage brother. It was also good to read a book set in Liverpool as it doesn't feature too often in many murder/mysteries. Really enjoyed this book.
Thanks to Joffe Books for the ARC to review.
