‘The queen bee is the colony leader and the mother of most of the bees’
Author Janet Wilson has now published five books – YOUR BACKYARD HOMESTEAD, COMPOSTING, RAISED BED GARDENING, GREENHOUSE GARDENING, and now BEEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS– that could not come at a more propitious time! As we continue in the ‘stay at home’ status and watch grocery prices rise and availability falter, now is a great time to consider a new at home hobby that offers results!
Janet converses with the reader is a lighthearted and engaging manner, as her opening comments attest: ‘Who doesn’t love honey? Think about the millions of people who rely on honey for varying health reasons: yes, honey is king, but before getting it, one has to get the bees to make it. Beekeeping is the nurturing process that leads to the harvesting of honey. But there is so much more to beekeeping than honey…This book’s objective is to introduce you to the core concepts and inspire you to take action as you read...’
Given that impetus, Janet then instructs in a step by logical step how to create a beehive and how to make it work. After a very informative discussion about bees and their ‘product’, she guides us through the preparation of building a beehive and obtaining bees, the way to get bees to be attracted to the new home, how to feed and nurture bees, the seasons for beekeeping, how to harvest honey, the handling of parasites and predators and diseases, the supplies needed to carry out this process, cleaning the beehive, and mistakes to avoid.
Janet Wilson restores our faith in ourselves as providers and self-sustenance. Recommended reading – and using!
This author has written a number of gardening books, which I reviewed, and this seems like a perfect adjunct to those books. Like her other books, this one is very well organized. After an introduction where she definitely comes across as a cheerleader for both beekeeping and bees, she starts by discussing beekeeping in general. She discusses hive types and gives you an approach to building one. Not specific directions about how to build a hive, but rather the way you should go about building one in general. Next up are the very important topics of getting healthy bees, introducing them to the hive, and nurturing them through the seasons. She touches on how to keep predators and pests at bay and suggests some tools. As always with her books, everything is very clear and easily understandable. You also come to appreciate the importance of all the various aspects of beekeeping. I do wish, however, that the book had photos, especially of the different types of hives. Compared to some of her other books, the author appears more strident and passionate about the topic, but as I am a firm believer in the importance of bees myself, I can completely understand her approach. If you have an interest in beekeeping, this will get you thinking about the logistics to see if it is a good fit for you.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
