Sometimes it's the unexpected detour that life throws your way that ends up taking you exactly where you were meant to be.
Wyatt Bryant is all kinds of broken.
Wyatt never planned to end up in the middle of nowhere. He was a big city guy, used to bright lights and constant noise. He needed both those things to distract him from the ugly memories of his past and the loneliness he couldn’t seem to shake. Now, he is bound for the back roads of Wyoming because his younger brother is beyond worried about him. He's headed for a quiet place to heal and search for some uninterrupted serenity to figure out what he's going to do with the rest of his life. Wyatt never expected to live his life in the slow lane, and he really didn't see the breathless attraction to a small-town sheriff coming.
Rodie Collins is all kinds of conflicted.
Rodie had long since grown used to the snail's pace of life in Sheridan, Wyoming. He was accustomed to the gossip and malicious grapevine that was common in all small towns. Cruel words and judgmental looks followed him throughout his childhood and made him overly cautious as an adult. He had it easy keeping the peace in Sheridan most days, at least until Wyatt showed up. Rodie couldn’t hide his attraction to the sexy former special agent, and there was something about the city slicker that made him want to throw caution to the wind. Rodie loves his job and his hometown, but he may have to pick between what he's always known and Wyatt when push comes to shove and long-held secrets come to light.

Too much time was spent on dealing with small minded homophobic people in a small town instead of the relationship development between the MCs. I also never got a clear picture of the time line. I couldn't tell you if days, weeks or months had passed.
It wasn't until the end and the epilogue that I started feeling the connection between the MCs.
Why did I wait so long to listen to this book! I knew it was going to be MM and I love MM, I just kind of forgot about it and I guess it was the right time to listen. Wyatt coming back into town to heal was the best thing that could have happened to Rodie. Rodie knows who he is and what he wants but he doesn’t want to put out there all public like because he knows not everyone will be ok with it. And why should they have a say in who he sees. Wyatt has been out for a while and he knows what that can be like fighting to be seen for something other than his sexuality. But he also can’t and won’t be someone’s secret. Great story I loved it and the narration, I am glad we got some new voices and ones that fit the characters.
Wyatt and Rodie were some of my favourite characters from the Getaway series and I couldn't wait to read their story. Now that I read it I want to start it all over again. So yeah, I loved Detour, as expected.
I said it so many time that I am a huge fan of Jay Crownover. I read every single book she published and all of them were the most perfect, amazing, great, fascinating, marvelous, phenomenal, incredible... and maybe I could find some more superlative words I could describe her masterpieces.
5 stars is never enough for any of Jay's book!
29 April 2020 I read this book for a second time after just a few months since it was published. I rarely read a book more than once but I loved it so much I just want to start reading it again straight away... Why is this book so special? The chemistry is unbelievable! Jay is phenomenal! No one can express love and feelings better than her. This book wasn't a fantasy; the author conceived an imaginary world that seems real to me.
6 August 2020 I had to go on Audible only for Wyatt and Rodie! Loved their story and I gave it another go!
I absolutely loved this story! Jay Crownover's M/M novels do not get the recognition they deserve. Wyatt and Rodie are both silent strength and after four books of chaos, it was nice to finally see a little peace settle in the world. And while these two have a long road to their HEA, their story was uniquely refreshing.
I have been loving Wyatt since he first appeared on the scene back in Retreat. The man has been a pillar of strength and after Webb got his own happily-ever-after, I knew it was finally Wyatt's turn. But Wyatt starts off a broken and battered man. He is still dealing with the pain and anguish of almost being killed, not to mention coming to terms with all his emotional trauma from his childhood which he never really dealt with. Needless to say, the man was breaking apart and breaking my heart.
I was a little tepid with Rodie, he didn't have exactly a glowing reputation in the earlier books but the man really shined here. He oozed confidence and care and like Wyatt, I found myself swooning. The initial tension between these two builds into a breaking point. I loved how Wyatt was fighting his feelings and Rodie was endless in his pursuit. When these two finally give into each other, they realize just how similar they are. It's like two puzzle pieces spinning around but once they locked into place, all the pieces seemed to follow suit.
But what I loved most about this story is that Wyatt and Rodie aren't fighting that many external demons, their struggles are all closer to home. They are battling their own doubts and insecurities as well as the small town mentality. It was just the prefect balance of sweet/sexy and vulnerable/brave. With plenty of cameos from the rest of the Warner/Bryant clan. The epilogue had me feeling all the fuzzy feels and I was so glad to get closure on everyone, now my only wish that Cam and Ethan get a story too!
This one ended up being better than I thought going into it. I just didn't see Wyatt and Rodie together. But Rodie was hiding so much of himself, when he started to share it became super easy to see how the two men were perfect for each other, had so much in common and understood so much of each other's pasts.
I loved how everyone from past books butted their heads in, but most of all Cam. You wouldn't think a kid would have much to say, but he was a wise sage with some of his comments.
I both loved and hated the town meeting. Hated because Rodie was pushed into it, but loved it because he could finally live his life in the open and had so much support.
I loved how this one ended, loved what Wyatt did with his life and the HEA that he and Rodie found.
This was an odd read. The two main characters somehow fell in love, yet they had very few interactions in this book. There was SO much backstory about secondary characters, that these two guys got lost in the shuffle. And I must have overlooked it, but Rodie's horrible childhood and horrible treatment from the town is alluded to several times and yet I can't remember there ever being an explanation. I just don't get this one at all.
4.5 stars I have been waiting for Wyatt and Rodie's book in the Getaway series and the city boy and Sheriff did not disappoint!
Wyatt Bryant is still recovering from significant injuries after a dangerous event that involved his family and has now sidelined him from his DEA agent career. He is now on an unexpected detour from his life and moving to Sheridan temporarily to stay near his brother, Wyatt on the Warner Ranch. He is frustrated, stubborn, prideful, and resistant to help. He hates his new limitations and is struggling to find his new purpose. He is gay and not afraid to be who he is, although has also had to keep it under wraps due to his job.
Rodie Collins is also ex-military and now the town Sheriff. He is cold, distant, grumpy, and very private about his preferences. He has a certain image to protect and tries to just do his job and keep to himself.
Wyatt and Rodie have challenged and antagonized each other before and get under each other's skin. And now it seems like Rodie is starting to make his wants known, much to Wyatt's complete surprise. These two men are tough, rugged, intelligent, and caring. Together they are passionate and hot, but also vulnerable and full of need. They make each other finally feel alive. They have a lot in common. But they are also in different places so kind of living day by day. Wyatt is not sure where he will go or what he will do after recovery. And Rodie's job and situation make coming out to his conservative constituents difficult.
There are other side stories and antagonists making waves in the community and pushing agendas on them. Rodie seems to be in the middle of all of the factions and making enemies. Sometimes it is hard to choose between self-preservation and standing up for what is right. This story is about hope, companionship, family, and not being afraid to be who you are.
It brings back the Warners and friends. I enjoyed being back in this world and loved getting more closure for all the characters. I found the storyline about Cam to be very current and important.
Read this out of order so it was a little challenging catching up on who all the characters are. It was a quick, fun read and it makes me want to go back and read the books that came before it. Jay never disappoints.
Oh my. Jay Crownover does it again. How can she just keep getting better and better? I’m just loving this series, and I’m so so sad that this is the final story following this wonderful group of friends and family. Oh, and don’t get me started on that cover - scrumdiddlyumptious - I love it. I also love a really good M/M romance, and Rodie Collins and Wyatt Bryan are two alpha males that really know how to heat things up, both in and out of the bedroom. Wyatt is so pig headed and stubborn, determined to be independent even while nursing his injuries, it’s also cute hw he wants to hate small town Sheriff Rodie, pushing him away at every opportunity. Rodie though is determined to break through Wyatt’s tough exterior, it’s proving difficult though - good job he’s not easily put off. With lots of cameos from all the Warners, I just loved getting to see how they are all doing (Cam in particular). A story filled with love, family and friendship, then there’s the secrets, the homophobes, and the bad guys. Action romance at its best. I loved it. Second time round and I went with the audio version, and just so you know, it was sooo good. Loved Brad King and John Solo were perfect.
Detour is the fifth and final book in the Getaway series, one that I’m sad to see ending.
I absolutely adored both Rodie and Wyatt. They are both great characters and such good men who would do anything to protect those they loved and who were important to them. Having both been injured while serving, Rodie in the military and Wyatt in law enforcement, they understood on a deeper level the scars and injuries that remained once the healing was done. They were both stubborn and proud men made better by the other.
Cam played a big role in a portion of this story and I was so happy to see how strong and confident he had become. The entire Warner family had his back. We learned in the earlier books that their family isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right, and it’s something that they all do standing together.
Family, love and acceptance are major themes in this book. There’s a happy ending that wraps the series up nicely.
4.5☆ I really enjoyed Detour. I've always wanted more from Wyatt and Rodie and I finally got it! You could always tell they had a connection, and they finally explore that in this book. They may not always see eye to eye about things or how they're handled, but they have a lot in common and understand where the other is coming from in the end. I loved seeing their relationship develop and bloom, they both deserve a HEA with what they've had to endure in life. The storyline was very interesting and kept me hooked. The epilogue was wonderful! I loved all the updates on the rest of the gang! It always makes me happy when I feel like I get proper closure from/for the characters, so thank you Jay!
I’m a huge fan of the Getaway Series, and I have been excited for Rodie and Wyatt’s book! I was definitely not disappointed!
This book took on a lot of tough subject matter, but it was done extremely well. These characters, the Warner Family, have grown through the series, each of the books tackling real life hardships, things we read about in the news. I commend the author for bringing these into her books, she makes these characters and stories real.
This was a great series from start to finish. The cover of Retreat drew me in but the story kept me. I wanted Rodie's story from his first mention in the series, and I'm glad he got his HEA.
4.5☆ I love Rodie and Wyatt's story! These two are such an interesting pair and I love the way Wyatt makes Rodie really think about himself and life. I really liked all the city dynamics going on and all that storyline. I read this super quick and just devoured these two.
This was definitely a feel good book! I really enjoyed getting to know Rodie and Wyatt. I haven’t read the whole series, so I think I’ll have to go and do that now after seeing all these amazing characters interact!
First book by this author and I was very impressed only wished she had more m/m romance. I liked their chemistry together. Can be read as a stand alone.
I’ve been waiting for this book forever! I just loved Wyatt and Rodie together what a great story so well written. I love the humanity in all of Hay’s characters!
This was another fun Getaway book. I enjoyed Rodie and Wyatt together. I especially enjoyed Wyatt's coming to terms with his past, his brother, and his friends.
After the events of the last book, Wyatt Bryant is still recovering from his wounds, his brother Webb wants him in Wyoming to take care of him. Once he arrives at the airport, the town sheriff Rodie Collins is there to pick him up. From the previous books, there was crazy chemistry between these two and Wyatt is not happy to see the sheriff while he was so weak. When Rodie first met Wyatt, everything about the former Special Agent had rubbed him the wrong way but he couldn't help but be attracted to him. Now that Wyatt was in Wyoming for the foreseeable future, Rodie knew he had to let the man know that he was attracted to him. Wyatt was not happy being under the watchful eyes of everyone at the Warner ranch but he knew that he needed to be around people to help him. All Webb wanted was to take care of his big brother who always took care of him growing up. Rodie went out of his way to help out Wyatt and even find him a PT while in town. And when Rodie finally showed Wyatt that he was very much interested, things quickly changed for the both of them. I loved that Cam, the teen aged gay boy that Lane and Brynn Warner had taken in looked to Wyatt as his role model. And the situation with the mayor and his assistant was so ridiculous and frustrating but the Warners, Webb, Ten, Wyatt and Rodie wouldn't let that injustice go unpunished. I loved Wyatt and Rodie, these two men never thought that they would find someone to love and gain a family to boot but they found that in each other and the Warner clan. While Wyatt never hid who he was, Rodie just never divulged that he was gay but together, they were able to live their truths and love each other with no reservations. This was such an incredible series and how this group of people loved each other and would bat for one another was amazing to read.
What a lovely end to a thrilling series, we followed Webb and Wyatt Bryant through their ups and downs, their trials and tribulations.
I loved that Wyatt got his HEA, he thoroughly deserved it, he had been through the ringer whilst doing the last couple of large investigations, enduring very unsafe situations.
Even though he was behaving like a petulant child, he managed to keep himself together while he healed and recovered.
Not forgetting the larger than life Rodie Collins, the Sheriff of the town Webb and Wyatt had decided to put roots down.
We got a full blown love story, not quite friends / enemies to lovers but they had their issues.
They were both Aplha male guys but were deeply compassionate, they loved helping people, even if they people didn't think they needed help, very similar to each other.
Rodie had not had it easy, and had gone off to serve in the military earning great respect, that his commanding officer followed him back to the town he grew up in.
The hot Sheriff had kept his private life, private but when a lad from The Ranch needed help, Rodie dove straight in without hesitating, even if it caued a few eyebrows to raise with strong political figures, but with Wyatt's help he was able to rise above the bigotry.
A feel good story, of two hot smoking guys working together to overcome what live threw at them, to bringing joy to others lives.
Had a hard time choosing between 3 and 4 stars. All of the aspects individually were great, and it is lovely to see an author put an LGBTQ story in an otherwise mainstream romance series like this, but there was something about the story that felt like it was just getting started until you realized you were about 80% of the way through the book. Maybe she was counting on precious character exposition from earlier in the series, but I read them all and still felt like Rodie and Wyatt’s personality development had a bit further to go. As it stands, the most defining character trait for both of them in this book is that they’re gay. Sex was hot, but their dialogue felt almost formulaic? Honestly I feel like the character I got to know best was Cam. Worth the read though! Especially to finish out such a hot series 🔥
This book wraps up the fantastic Getaway series by Jay Crownover. We finally get a story for Wyatt and Rodie. They are both characters that we have met in previous books. Rodie is the sheriff and Wyatt is a former special agent and Webb’s brother. Wyatt is recovering from a bad injury and dealing with the fact that he will need a career change. Rodie is the strong silent type who is a great sheriff but tired of hiding part of who he is. They both have demons from their past to conquer. It’s a great love story and they come together to conquer all the obstacles. It was nice to see members of the Warner family again. It’s a great way to wrap up the Getaway series.
Jay has definitely got me digging the cowboy life. Wyatt is recovering from injury, out of a job, just totally without a place in the world. And even though his brother wants to help him, he does NOT like leaning on others. Rodie is the sheriff, and fascinated with Wyatt. But his love life is a little too in the closet in a small minded town.
These two were sweet together. Neither wanted just a fling, there was a lot of caring and communication. I also like how Cam has kind of his own story in all this. He's a teen from a previous book. I loved their happy ending.
