Earl is a werewolf, employed as a long haul trucker for the Treaty Council, the group responsible for keeping the existence of werewolves secret. Earl enjoys his job. He’s a lone wolf without a pack, and he's sure he doesn't need one. What he has instead is a call girl that he adores. Naomi De Plume. She's cute, funny and puts up with his idiosyncrasies. She's perfect for him--except she doesn't know what he is, and he isn't allowed to tell her. Humans can’t know about werewolves, not unless they're about to be infected.
“Think she is worth converting?”
Earl, didn’t even blink. “In a heartbeat, but I wouldn’t ruin her life like that.”
“That’s fair.”

Naomi isn’t supposed to have a favorite client, but she just can't help herself. His name is Earl. Most of the time she likes her job. But things have changed; she needs to get out of the business in a hurry. Her plan is to take one last appointment on her way out of town and get on with her life. She isn't expecting happily ever after, but she could never have guessed she would end up hunted by werewolves.
A stand alone novel in the series "The Practicalities of Werewolves in a Modern Age"
Again this was okay rationale for werewolves etc., but not so great characterization. Also again, the guys were having casual sexual relationships with each other. And again I just prefer it to be all about the heroine. The conflict at the end when they split up was contrived.
I was so happy to see this book available on Amazon again. I really enjoyed the first one, and I wanted to know what happens to Earl, the lone wolf truck driver we met in that story.
Once again, Ms. Unger has surprised me with a story that is thoughtful in its portrayal of sensitive topics and the characters found within. I've been debating if these are actually romances, and...I think they are in the loosest sense of what one expects when reading a romance: they're about the coming together of 2 or more persons, the struggles to be together, and a Happily (enough) For Now is where she seems to like to leave them. But unlike the usual expectations of what a romance will be, these stories are neither light nor fluffy. They're pretty heavy, dismally dark at times, and full of the type of angst that makes you want to go punch something.
I really liked this read, but I also spent a lot of it furious and taking breaks to go walk my feelings off before coming back to it. Naomi/M****'s tale is full of her attempts to live life on her own terms, but her own self-sabotaging and outside forces keep screwing her over, and I could never decide which made me more upset, honestly. M frustrated me a lot, but her reactions and responses felt genuine, messy, and real—not flat and soap opera-ish as often happens. What would be TSTL with weaker characterization is relatable, though aggravating. I spent a lot of this book shaking my head while murmuring, "Oh, ___," as one of the characters did something to shoot themselves in the foot. Every character in this story has baggage, and it's all heavy.
Like the rest of her work, this book explores consent, rape, self-agency, self-acceptance, and a myriad of other topics that one rarely gets to see in the PNR genre. And I appreciated how well and empathetically the topic of sex work was handled in here.
If you haven't read the first book in the series, stop and go do that first. You'll be so lost about the Treaty, the Blacks, Ulfurinn, and why how M's case is being handled is so dang frustrating, if you do not. The first one contains a lot of the lessons newly turned Ulfurinn learn during their transition period, as Sarah learned them.
My biggest quibble about this is that a very important question wasn't answered; one that seemed like it's a big plot point: This part of the plot never made sense to me, and that's the biggest reason this was a 4 star instead of 5 read.
Great plot with working girl and the shifter who loves her. He treats her as a precious gem but suddenly she's at risk so accepts being turned. He hurts her badly when his guilt overwhelms him. Introduces other characters and it's soooo good.
Another book filled with interesting, well-rounded characters, a heroine you can respect despite (or because of?) a backstory that is quite unusual (in my reading experience, at least), and unique lore. I really enjoyed the pace and feel of this story, so much so that I was taken by surprise by it coming to an end. Hoping for a continuation with these characters. Definitely one of those books I'll enjoy rereading more than once.
5 stars 'cause this one is my favorite. When I go back to a book to read again I know it deserves a rating. The dynamics of the relationships and the backgrounds of the main characters pulled me in. Love the series.
I love books in these series, they must be one of the few out there without the annoying gung-ho, snarky my-way-or-the-highway heroines. Characters are flawed and realistic, trying their best and working through misunderstandings and problems they're faced with.
I am so into this Pack's stories....many a reread in my future with these books! Pixie makes you think and, yes, I had to google several phrases and acronyms she used!
A very interesting take on the werewolf theme. I loved exploring the relationship challenges in this book. The very real fears and self doubts they all have. Absolutely loved their willingness to work things through, even when some needed tough love to help realize some hard truths. This is a RH with some MM activity. There are also some grammar issues with missing or wrong word usage, not terribly distracting. But it did knock off a star on review rating. A great read, and I’m looking forward to more from this author!
I really enjoyed the perspective of how Girl/Naomi/**** thinks and feels during her time of human and then ulfurrin. Her relationship with Earl is fascinating. Earl has some interesting challenges to face as he moves forward in his relationship with Naomi/****.
As I find out more about the social structures of this world, the more I enjoy it! So much thought has been put into the back story and it definitely shows in a very positive way.
I love this world. The writing is excellent so the characters are thoroughly believable. That was part of the problem. Right up until about 80% whilst there is a edge I didn’t feel pain and grief. The final part was difficult to read as it hurt. They hurt so you will hurt. I don’t enjoy that level of distress in my escapism fantasy reading.
Not what I was expecting. Not what I usually read. Just .... download the sample and see what you think. You will know by the end if it's what you are looking for or not.
