Using the church as a framework, Through the Year with John Stott explores in 365 days the whole biblical story from creation to the end times. One of the most highly respected Bible teachers of our times, John Stott gets to the heart of each of the 365 carefully selected passages, covering every essential Christian teaching in a single volume. The readings are broken up into weekly themes. Each devotion is based on a key passage of Scripture, and includes biblical references for further exploration.
John R. W. Stott is known worldwide as a preacher, evangelist, and communicator of Scripture. For many years he served as rector of All Souls Church in London, where he carried out an effective urban pastoral ministry. A leader among evangelicals in Britain, the United States and around the world, Stott was a principal framer of the landmark Lausanne Covenant (1974). His many books, including Why I Am a Christian and The Cross of Christ, have sold millions of copies around the world and in dozens of languages. Whether in the West or in the Two-Thirds World, a hallmark of Stott's ministry has been expository preaching that addresses the hearts and minds of contemporary men and women. Stott was honored by Time magazine in 2005 as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World."
Thank you to the publishers and to NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book to review!
Firstly I love the 'Note to the Reader' at the beginning of the book which explains how the book can be read. "Throughout the Year with John Stott" is essentially split into three parts:
1. God the Father (Creation to Christ : September-December), 2. God the Son (Christmas to Pentecost : January-April) and 3. God the Holy Spirit (Pentecost to Parousia : May - August).
Stott explains that the reader can jump in and join the story at any point. Each 'part' is preceded by an introduction and each week by an explanation and checklist. As there are no dates per se, it's possible to use the book perpetually.
The book tells the whole biblical story in a series of daily devotionals. Each devotional consists of a passage of Scripture, a reflection and further reading. This format allows busy people to experience Scripture daily, but also permits those with more time to engage more deeply and better understand the links between the Old and New Testaments.
I'll definitely be making a purchase of the physical copy of this book. I can see it being one that I would enjoy and benefit from reading every year.
I loved this devotional so much. This is the first time reading a devotional like this. I highly recommend this book and I will be getting a copy to add to my home library.
I received this copy from Netgalley and Lion Hudson Ltd for my honest review.
This has been, without doubt, the most edifying, challenging year long devotional guide I have used in the 80+ years of my life. Walking through the Bible in this way has been encouraging and a time of spiritual growth.
