But the alien Crystals really don’t care. They intend on wiping out humanity no matter who stands in their way.
Pulled from her Wasp fighter, the Navy assigns Beth as a scout pilot with a mission to find the Crystal’s home world. But in an underpowered Mosquito scout and no weapons with which to defend herself, if she finds their home system, can she possibly survive long enough to report back to Navy HQ?
In a final clash between humanity and the Crystals, can one pilot make a difference?

I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 85 titles published, 52 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, and my novella, "Fire Ant," was a 2018 Nebula finalist. My novel "Integration" was a 2018 Dragon Award finalist, and my novel "Sentenced to War" was a 2021 finalist. I am a USA Today Bestelling writer.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, wrting, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.
As an author, I don't think it is fair for me to rate any other author's books here on Goodreads if that rating is less than five stars. I have certainly read many books that do not deserve five (or four, three, or even two). However, I will not rate any of those here while I am a Goodreads author. Consequently, I will only be listing books that I really like and feel deserve five stars.
The story is fun and interesting. The choice of a Filipa heroine and family adds a nice touch. At times the asides take away from the main storyline, and the subplots are not that strong. In many ways, this is a coming-of-age story, but our heroine does not start out as a child.
These stories are the first I have read in decades that gets the time factors in space battles correct. The distances are huge and nothing happens quickly. I do, however, have an issue.
The main problem I have is with some of the physics (I am a physicist so…). Even napkin level math says traveling at 0.54 c for long periods will have time dilation impacts on those not there with you. With all the high-speed fighting and the number of missions flown, Beth's family would have died of old age by the time she returned home. This one problem nagged me throughout all the books. I could not ignore it.
I recommend these to anyone who likes space battles and an interesting set of aliens. They are not deep emotional stories, but the world-building is fun to read. There were a few places, at the beginning of each novel, where there is too much telling, but it soon passed.
The ending was a little too easy, but everyone has their style and this fits well with the tone of the books
The end of the saga is pretty decent. A couple of battles and a conclusion to the war that is at least not as simplistic as "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out!" Again it's a bit light on the human drama, but there is a little with Beth's wingman/sister-in-law Mercy and an almost potential love interest, a linguist named Wyma. With how short these books are--all under 200 pages--some romance and drama could have been included to make them longer without feeling like padding.
Anyway, it's a fun series and I think I got all the books for about $6 so I didn't spend a lot on it.
The life of a pilot from initially a lone explorer, searching far away places trying to just survive, caring for her family to becoming the Navy’s premier Ace pilot. All the tension, heartache, camaraderie and of course, loss that develops in the life of military pilot at war. She gains a name, friends, honor and status through her own intuition, skills and daring. A fantastic read from start to finish. I jumped from one book to the next at warp speed, always anxious to see what was next on the agenda. Get this series, you will not be disappointed.
Four and a half stars. A fun fast read. This was a solid conclusion in many ways satisfying. We follow Floribeth "Fire Ant" through highs and lows that really show her range as a character. The action is well paced with it's own highs and lows like any great roller coaster. The war continues to build as each side finds the other's home world. Then it becomes a race to see which side accomplishes a genocide first. There is some ancillary development of the other characters, but this book is so tightly focussed on Floribeth, I felt like she was inside my head.
Another exceptional adventure for Fire Ant. Thrust into a new different command and operational task, she excels and discovers things that bring the war into a far more deadly conflict. The characters demonstrate the bonds that form among warriors as well as the dedication and sacrifice they face daily to protect their comrades and their people without hesitation. The series was well worth the read, and this book in particular tops them all. My only sorrow is that I have now read virtually everything I can lay hands on written by Jonathan Brazee. Now I must wait.
I have only one complaint about this book: it’s that it ends. Oh, yes, that ending was totally perfect, even ideal but still it’s an ending to not only the book plot but the overarching story arc. Sad really as this dries, and this particular book, we’re wildly thrilling adventurous rides filled with perfectly crafted characters and totally fun. I know I’m going to reread it, but will miss that first time read feeling. In the meantime, I highly recommend both the series and this perfect series-ender of a book.
This was a fun series that I definitely enjoyed reading. I am glad I was able to read through all of them in a row, as each book picked up where the last more or less left off. The main characters evolved nicely through the series, there was a ton of action and fun, and at the end, the enemy species tried to come around. So there could be future books to cover the adventures of both. But for now, I definitely recommend this book and series.
Great way to end a storyline, or not. The heroes live to fight another day, or a couple of books. I very much enjoyed reading the books about FireAnt. Starting from a scout for a business to a flying ace with the navy.
If only most people could go through transformation like that.
The books end with a warning that the universe is to be divided into human world and Crystal worlds. But the trust is uneasy. Meaning maybe more books?
If you're a scifi space battle fan, this series should definitely be in your top ten reading list. The hero is extremely likable and the battles are epic. Wish there was more of Beth's life story but more than happy at the ending. Didn't understand some of the techno speak but the way it was written, didn't need to understand. Going on to another of Brazee's work until I've read them all.
The author has created a very engaging protagonist, and an interesting universe. He balances character and storyline development with the right amount of action. I hope this is not the last we see of Floribeth Salinas O’Shea Dalisay
If you had to end a series, this is a good way to do it. Fire Ant is one of my favorite characters from the author. And though this ties up the loose ends, I wouldn’t mind reading more of Beth’s story down the road (hint, hint). I’ve never read a mediocre book from the author, all have been excellent reads. This one is no exception.
The instant book was a nice and unexpected finish to the series. The author writes good, but long, battle scenes. The authors' writing style was easy to read, and he brought the readers' empathy to the books characters. I would recommend the entire series to science fiction fans.
Don't claim to understand the pilot culture, so not sure I was going to enjoy this series when I picked up the first book. But I ended up reading all of them and look forward to reading more from the same author. Good storytelling and kept it interesting to the end. Definitely worth reading if you like military based books.
It's definitely an advantage that Jonathan Brazee has military experience, but that doesn't always translate into writing ability. In this case, both elements are in play, so along with the verisimilitude we have lots of character and great storytelling. Highly recommended.
I bought the first of the series because the plot line followed a Filipinas. Bought the rest of the series because they were all good stories and this one was a good end to the series.
In this novella (part 5 in the series), humanity finds the aliens home system, and the aliens find humanity's home system. We still haven't found a way to communicate with each other, just attacking and fighting.
A true hero. She may not always believe in herself but those around her did. This series has had the same feel as the best of David Weber's heroes, humble but valiant. Loved this woman's fortitude and determination. Excellent read!
Well what a great storyline to finish of the series of Fire Ant. Totally enjoyed this series of books and look forward to reading more of your stories well worth the 5 stars
Just an all around fun, inclusive story. By inclusive, I mean you'll feel you are right there with the emotions and thrill that the main character is experiencing. Truly a great, fun read.
This was an exciting finish to a great series. The Wasp Pilot series was enjoyable through out all five books. This book made a great ending to a well thought out series .
Not the ending I'd envisioned, but it works. I missed the hint dropped about how it would end, but I suspect it was a bit too subtle anyway, but still, it's obvious after the fact. Very well done.
End of a great story and (I hope) a continuation of fire ants story
I read all 5 books in a week as the storyline kept getting more and more involved with Floribeth's life choices! This last book finishes up with the Crystals but not completely! So I hope there are more to come!
