Undercover. Alone. Hunted . . . and Paraplegic Another Day at the Office for Pen Wilkinson
Paraplegic young attorney Pen Wilkinson is unemployed and recovering from violent trauma when the FBI and police offer her an intriguing but risky working undercover at a defense contractor to investigate a young woman's murder. As Pen, under a false identity, probes the company's inner workings, she discovers infiltration by a foreign espionage ring, engaged in stealing top-secret defense technology for rogue nations. As the company's security net closes in on her, Pen presses on, working frantically to learn the identity of the thieves, and of the young woman's killer, before she meets the same fate.

I loved this - the secret identity, Pen's predictaments, even her disability, which I thought was handled really well. This was so unique in that I have never read a mystery with a protagonist who was in a wheelchair. That alone is enough to make this unique, but the story itself was fantastic. I loved the ending, there was so much going on, and it all fell together so well. I did not guess what was going to happen right up until the very end. And it was very satisfying. I felt this did something that few mysteries manage to do well, which was handle a large cast of characters and develop them well. The corporate men and the male law enforcement characters were easy to confuse, but once I got clear who was who, I was able to keep them apart. There were a couple of great women characters in this story, which as we know can be difficult to come by in mysteries. I loved the corporate espionage angle of this and I'd love to find the earlier Pen Wilkinson books and have a go at them.
This book has so many components: Pen accepting an undercover assignment; foreign spies in corporate organizations; a murder of a young woman that leads to others... a history of blackmail; theft; espionage and more make this book very hard to put down. The story was like a jigsaw puzzle that I really wanted to see all put together! Brian Lutterman's protagonist Pen Wilkinson proves every day she is capable while dealing with her past and going forward! I loved watching the characters in this book come together... SOME for good and SOME for the darker side of the novel.
Deadfall is a mystery thriller. It is the fifth book of its series, and the story is about Pen. She is a thirty-seven-year-old attorney who has been through a lot. Pen is looking for a break, so when the FBI contacts her about an assignment, she pleasantly accepts. She is Paraplegic, and she begins working to uncover investigating a murder. As she begins to get in deeper, discovering infiltrations and secrets about the company, her life becomes in danger.
The literature is very descriptive in providing a suspenseful and heartful story. There is a touch of romance in the story, keeping it light yet enjoyable to read. I enjoyed the fact that the author embedded sensitive matters of mental psychology issues in the story.
The character building was special to me because Pen was no ordinary girl. Her previous job and history of assignments had left so many scars that it was inevitably going to affect her new mission. Thus, the events and scenes were drawn from a background that was well designed and crafted. The author has the potential to write intriguing yet straightforward stories. I recommend this book to people who like secret spy service stories, police, and murder books.
