I've ruined everything. I had a mate. Resonance. Happiness. But then T'chai's attacked by ravenous sky-claw and almost killed. To help him recover, I tell the healer to turn off our unfulfilled resonance. It's temporary . . . or so I think. Big mistake. Because now my khui acts like it's dead and it hates T'chai. But I still love him. How do we move forward when I can't bear his touch? Is there a way to get back our happiness together, or is it time to give up on what we once had? T'chai has other plans, though. He's not giving up on us. If it means crossing the world, he's ready to do it at my side. Contains mature themes.
Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.
Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)
God I love this series. This is some of the best alien smut I have ever read lol. That ending thought omg really RUBY DIXON you just gonna leave your readers hanging like that. I can't wait to get my hands on Raven's book now. I can't wait to see what happens on this crazy ice planet next!
The following ratings are out of 5: Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙 Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️💜 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌏 Character development: 🥲😳😋😙🥰
The heroine:Mari - Mari was one of two human women who were gathering things in the spaceship that was in the ocean when the ship sunk and both her and Lauren (from the first book in this series) floated away and ended up on a lush tropical island with a huge active volcano. Both women resonated to men they met there and were extremely happy.
The Hero:T’Chai - He resonated to Mari from the moment they met. They were both happy about it and fell in love, though before they could fulfill resonance, T’Chai was nearly killed by a giant Sky Claw (like a pterodactyl).
The Story: Though we know the highlights of what initially happened between Mari and T’Chai from Lauren’s story and some of the later books, we didn’t know the details. This book goes back to the island to tell the details of the love story between T’Chai and Mari and how everything went so wrong and Mari had to have the healer turn off her resonance when T’Chai was in a coma.
Turning off Mari’s resonance helps T’Chai’s Qhui to stop focusing on procreation and it does slowly heal him. Though it leaves Mari not feeling anything at all. Things that used to feel great, like touching T’Chai, now feels more annoying than anything. Though T’Chai does take nearly a year to fully recover, Mari is left with an apathy when it comes to T’Chai.
The story is a good one. Mari still loves T’Chai and he her, but when he touched her, something inside her felt wrong. T’Chai could have gotten frustrated and resentful but instead he was always so understanding and steadfast. It was a very good romance.
The book is told in both characters points of view via dual narration. The narrators are Sean Crisden and Felicity Munroe who did a great job and are both pleasant to listen to. I like duet narration quite a bit better than dual narration, but since dual narration is more common, I am used to it and these two narrators do a good job of doing other voices.
I know this series has some crossover with the Fireblood Dragon series in that Ashtar is one of the same dragons from that series. This series has a newcomer when a woman named Daisy is dropped on the planet in her stasis pod. She caries news from Earth that has me wondering what will eventually happen in that series.

➕ What I liked :
Mexican-American heroine.
Rather sweet/emotional story.
A hero that is steadfast and understanding.
Somewhat interesting hero and heroine.
Another interesting twist to a khui/cootie that does not work as it should.
In the beginning of the story it has another location on the Ice Planet that is warm/warmer. (It would have been awesome and interesting if the auhtor “found” another tropical island on the Ice Planet.)
➖ What I disliked :
The heroine was a little too whiny, but also a little too skittish in the beginning of the story.
A missed opportunity to have a couple that can’t or do not want children and to change things up a little… But also a missed opportunity to discover more about the Khui and resonance and how that all works in more detail, and that it can be shut down or tampered with so that resonance does not happen etc. but still works to keep the host alive and healthy etc.
Some parts were a little bit repetitive/rehashed.
Rather formulaic in the character description/character choice.
Unnecessary side plot/mini plot and annoying side character. (The whole situation with Tia and all the drama with that felt nonsensical and unnecessary… Even if some of it was to get a “reason” to go to the other village… it just felt over the top... So immature/childish and desperate even for a 17 year old.
Like the hero said they could and would have traveled to the other village to see if the other healer could help Mari... even if it was through the blizzard-coated passes.
Or/and they could have asked Ashtar to fly them there much sooner... because it was one of Ashtar’s “duties” for the tribe to fly. Someone had to break the news about Earth to the other humans at the other village so someone would have gone there anyway.)
****Note to self: Do Not re-read this book again.****
It's awesome that Mari and T'chai finally got their HEA.
The first 1/3 of the book is on the island of the Great Smoking Mountain before it's final demise, and part of the last half of the book is in Croatoa. The rest is on the Icehome beach.
I'm glad that this book showed how they began their relationship on the island. I loved seeing the island again, it's such an interesting setting. It would be awesome if Ruby Dixon found another tropical island on the Ice Planet. I liked seeing Croatoa and some is the characters there, too.
💙 Bookish Thoughts Mari drove me nuts throughout the book but Tchai made up for it! This 4.75 is for him!
"Being your mate is about sharing your life. It is not just taking you into the furs and making you scream my name. It is about being there for you when you are sad. It is about making you smile. It is about keeping you safe.”
I usually don’t like when Ruby goes back in time and tells stories she skipped over, but this time I did. Maybe it’s because Ice Home isn’t as far along as IPB so the time jumps aren’t as massive. That and I always wondered about what happened to Mari when she and Lauren were separated and mated into different clans. Overall I found this book cute, I liked all the different settings and people we checked in with. Mari and T’chai’s situation was definitely unique in the land of IH/IPB, feels like most stories have been told already before so having your resonance disrupted that way and the affects were interesting. Mostly though I’m very intrigued by the second epilogue ending with Raven 🧐
"Siempre he estado feliz de esperarte.
They were cute and it was nice to see all of the "her khui is off" drama come to an end. But that sexist nonsense with Tia? Yeah, that killed the book for me.
"But something must be done with her. I'rec, too. Fighting is not allowed inside the tribe. If we all swung our fists as we pleased, everything would be chaos." SOMETHING MUST BE DONE WITH HER! That was uttered in a book written by a woman for an audience that is majority women!
She's a flirt, the guys don't get flirting, the biggest jackasses on the island fight and she is sent away. This was so much boys will be boys trash. These guys can learn to survive on an ice planet but they can't learn about consent?!
And Ruby Dixon's authors note wasn't at all satisfactory. You created the characters and wrote the book. A better solution could have been found. One that didn't have a bunch of female characters blaming a 17 year old for the actions of horny dudes.
Don't tell me it's fantasy. Dixon loves bringing in reality and this is the second time she has made a mess and blamed it on "these guys just don't know". Callie and Penny being roofied still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Ugh, these are supposed to be fun. I didn't even get to the addition of Daisy (who is annoying and I will skip that book) or the fact that A'tom/Bridget is still hovering in the background like a bad smell. 😬
Safe Completely... H is a virgin, h isn't but its been a long while. No OW/OM drama with them. Lots of OM/OW drama to come.
If you are reading #11 of a series, there is hardly anything in there you are not going to like...
It has been so long Ruby has written about Icehome or IPB universe, I forgot about Marisol and her partner T'chai (T and chai mean tea so his name is basically tea,tea by the way). Mari had put her and T'chai's khui in hibernation with the help of Veronica, but after T'chai recovered from his injuries, they could not turn her khui on and everything is not right. Mari feels disconnected and uncomfortable around T'chai and that is stopping her to get her happily ever after.
But that is the thing with Ruby, even if she gives our focus couple their HEA, there are so much going on with the rest of the tribe, I am really itching to get my hands on next one because I want to know what happened to Raven and how Daisy is adjusting to a new tribe. Until next time...
It's been a while since I last read about this series, because I'm a picky reader and if I don't like the blurb I don't go there, but I always wanted to know what happened with Mari an T'chai.
This story was really sweet, I was pleasently surprised. It started from the beginning in the volcano Island (kudos to Ruby for that, it was needed), and we learn how they meet, how they fall in love and how tragedy strikes them, (this one hurt)
Then Victoria turns off both of their khuis to save T'chai and their problems starts. Mari's issue was described like a depression and T'chai was just so understanding, so sweet and so in love that I just couldn't with the sweetness. They felt like a married couple, with their routines, respect, admiration and love. I really liked reading about how they tackled their struggle and conquered. It was just so sweet I'm swooning.
The extra drama was excessive sometimes, but after reading author's note I kind of understand. But still my focus was totally on the couple, the rest was the family being a family.
This book is really lovely, loveliest read on the series. 🥰❤
This book rocked so much!!! T’Chai and Marisol had a very tragic start. We all worried that their love wouldn’t make it through the storm ⛈ but the 🧊 Icehome crew saved the day. This book unlike the others started off extremely tragically. There was a 🌋 volcanic eruption, a monster 👹 skyclaw attack. Holy flying dinosaurs 🦕 🦇 and to top that all the 3 clans from the island 🏝 were all forced to uproot everything and leave in the midst of all of this. Marisol was overwhelmed by everything that was happening and come on who wouldn’t be?
T’Chai was a rock in all of this and I loved his resilience. He lost everything in a handful of minutes and he still did everything to make his mate smile. We all want to be loved like this at one point or another in life and after a lot of struggle they finally got their HEA.
I really enjoyed Mari and T'chai's story! The scene where they met, told through T'chai's POV, was actually one of my favorites of either IPB or Icehome. I'm such a fucking sap for sad, intense men thinking precious things like love and kinship aren't "for" them, and witnessing the moment of disbelief and joy when they realize that it's really happening.
T'chai as a whole was a far more interesting, soulful character than I expected him to be from the rare glimpses we got of him in Lauren's Barbarian. He's so understanding and supportive of Mari's touch-aversion, and he's completely committed to her no matter if their situation "improves." It reminded me a lot of the Tiffany/Salukh dynamic in IPB, but Dixon's had a lot of time to improve her writing since then, so it was more satisfying from a technical standpoint.
Mari was a fun character, if a bit inconsistent. She was introduced as a really cowardly person, presumably to get her and Lauren into a situation where they were left on the sinking ship, thereby sending them to the island and initiating the whole Icehome series. In this book, however, she gains a lot more depth . . . but her original traits are sort of pushed aside/overwritten in the process, which is why I'm rather conflicted on her. I like the Mari we see in this volume a lot, but she felt a little too different from the one we saw in Lauren's story.
Mari’s Mistake is book ten in the Icehome series by Ruby Dixon.
This series should be read in order.
This story, I feel, should have come out earlier. The first 40% takes us back to the Island were T’chai and Mari meet and before the Volcano irrupted. It shows us how their relationship started
It was a slow start and we do see this couple throughout the other books in the background. We see they have some issues; especially since Mari had had her khui turned off to save T’chais life. In doing this she no longer feels anything and when T’chai touches her it feels wrong.
Mari and T’chai have been struggling since they arrived on the beach. They love each other, but it hasn’t affect the khui and so their relationship has struggled. It’s looking like they might not work out. T’chai is a sweet and I really like him.
As with most of the books in this series, we get to see what the rest of the tribe is up to. We see the other couples and a new character is introduced.
Mari’s Mistake was a bit depressing and sad at times to read with the resonance put on hold, but in the end I enjoyed. I quite enjoy this series and am glad these two got a happy ending. I can’t wait to read more. Ruby Dixon writes fun, sexy, & enjoyable sci-fi romance. I recommend this author and her work.
Marisol was the other female that was stranded on the volcanic island together with Lauren. She instantly resonated to T’chai there, but after an attack where T’chai was wounded, Mari asks Veronica, the healer, to turn off her Khui and therefore resonance so that T’chai can properly heal. She thinks everything will turn out fine once they resonate again, only to realize that she now only feels disgust when T’chai touches her.
This plot ws teased throughout the other books, we get glimpses of Mari and T’chai here and there and I was excited to read about them. We learn more about the Khuis, how they work and how they can be influenced by Veronica and Maylak.
There’s also a new character that finds her way onto the Iceplanet, Daisy. She brings bad news from earth, which I already knew about, but the news shock our heroines and I look forward to seeing how this affects their behavior in the future.
One thing I have to say is that I hated Tia. I’m glad that she’s not part of the beach tribe for now and I hope we don’t get to see too much of her in the future books.
I honesty hadn't given much though into Mari and T'Chai, I mean I knew their story or the very basics but for some reason I just took the information we have been given about them and moved on. I am so glad Ruby Dixon gave us their book I loved it, after so many books in this series and the original I am still blown away that she gave give us new and inventive ideas. I loved this book and can't wait for the next.
GAHHHHD I have been wondering about Mari and T'Chai for so MF'N long.
And now I am pleased.
Most pleased.
I seriously LOVED the detour from the icy planes that was Mari and Lauren's stories. Can I also say how nice it felt to be back on the tropical paradise death island again?
We finally got to leave the frigid icy wasteland of Not-Hoth and suddenly find ourselves on a mysterious island where clothes are optional, food is scarce, Horns and Beards and Four-Arms, OH MY.
Things are always more than they seem when we see a couple in passing in another book. I love how we finally got answers for Mari and T'chai, and some pretty damn satisfying resolutions for the couple.
Now, Seriously .
When we gonna get some Shadow-Cat lovin' up in this piece??
I was so happy that Mari and T'Chai got their happy ending. I'm glad their cooties were able to be fixed and they were able enjoy each other again. I love how Ruby makes her stories so real, how she writes about real things that us women face. I know how Mari felt, I'm sure just as other mothers and women have, losing your "mojo", after I had my kids it took years for it to come back. I could relate to her frustration and feelings of not being right. I loved how sweet and understanding T'chai was and how he helped Mari through it all, showing her he loved her no matter what. Great job and I love the shake up and can't wait to see where it goes.
DNF @ 20% I usually give a book more of a shot, but I realized early on that this h was the selfish, sniveling M from Lauren's Barbarian (the only other book I read in this series) who hid all the time, and caused all the issues... then selfishly only cared about her mate as everyone else struggled to save them. UGH...hate her... so I just can't.
Over all pretty enjoyable. I feel like the last few ice home/barbarian books were couple-centred only and although this one was like that, we still got some mega plot expansion introduced and I’m super excited to see where it takes us!
I can't rate this book because I mostly skimmed it ... and unfortunately I pretty much hated it. Like if I were to rate it it'd probably be 1 stars and an F.
T'chai and Marisol are ... well until she makes the decision to "turn off" the resonance she's basically awful. [just ... dumb AF. She made me want to pull my face off.] Also like - focus more on communicating with your man? FIGURE SHIT OUT? You can use gestures, point etc. Sure not for everything but like... and she runs around screaming all the damn time and she's just such a fucking IDIOT.
I get the language barrier but it annoyed me more than anything because it just didn't seem like they were trying. On the one hand, yes I actually liked it because it annoys me with other things when they're obviously aliens etc but oh! Magically all understand each other!
But ... here like ... just saying the same thing over and over and slower isn't helpful. Maybe that dragon book [which REALLY fucking annoyed me] set the ground work. Like otherwise this wouldn't have irked me so much, but considering I'd unfortunately read the other first... it was too much. Just overkill and such.
*sigh*
I get the "you don't know what you don't know" but ... dude.
I'm glad they left their death trap island... But I was so over it. And the whole .... whinging. First she's all cowardly and - clearly doesn't get resonance - and then the "after" she's just beating herself up but also being a huge asshole...
And I ... look. Fuck Tia. Fucking child. I get she's a child but children also have brains. I'm glad she's going away for a long time.
I THOUGHT I had read previous books in this series but I reeeeaaaaally don't think so now ... I liked seeing the other happy couples, and the low key "settlement of women" -
but again. So much skimming. I just ... honestly kinda hated Mari.
Bleh.
The author's note helped a bit - but like ... the issues there weren't things that bothered me ... [also you know, skimming] so ... there was that. [Like why bother about your possible infertility/not procreating with this dude IF YOU'RE NOT EVEN HAVING SEX?!]
Anyway I know you can't get it on the alien planet - or not really - or you need to talk to friends which she obviously wasn't doing .... but she needed counseling. [And the whole resonance/whatever thing fix... I really didn't love how she called it a cootie either.]
Ruby Dixon can make you like any character, no matter how annoying. I loved T'chai - he is the most steadfast of all the heroes in this series. I was so annoyed with Mari in previous books, but of course, she was redeemed in this one. I'm really excited about some of the potential advances brought up in the book and OMG - Raven's book is going to be AMAZING!
YEEEESSSSSS!!!! I've been waiting for Mari and T'Chai's story for so long I thought it'd never get here, then again these two probably thought the same thing. The book starts back on the island where Mari and Lauren accidentally end up and meet their mates. After a grievous injury (literally his guts were spilling out) Mari and T'Chai's resonance is completely f'd up. Both their khui's were working on overload trying to heal, mate etc and got so bad Mari chose to have Veronica shut off their khui's to allow T'Chai time to heal. Unfortunately turning off the khui had some unfortunate side effects for Mari, particularly being unable to even stand the touch of her mate. For almost a full year these two exist as strangers until finally it all becomes too much emotionally for Mari-especially being around so many mated happy and expecting couples. Mari and T'Chai have not had the easy and carefree romance many of the other couples have had and so they have a lot to overcome if they hope resonance will ever return to their lives I was ecstatic that Ruby finally laid the groundwork for connecting all her books. The rift is real (from the Fireblood series) and the Earth as all the humans knew it is no more. For some this is not as hard to handle as they've been so long away from home and are now mated and happy that they no longer sought to return like some of the newer girls who still always had a smidgen of hope. We get a new surprise drop in character who I hope will bring a new dynamic to the series as well as bring some more insight into the outside Not Hoth world. Not only that but the groundwork for the next book (Raven's) was laid and I am literally willing the days away until August. So in love with this series, I hope it never ends :)
We have been waiting on this couple since book 1 of Icehome! This is a second chance romance in a fated mates world, so fun RD is so smart and I'll say it again - these books get better and better!
The book takes us back to the time of Icehome 1 and goes through the motions of everything that went down from Mari and T'Chai's povs. This was fun to go back and remember all the things that went down in early Icehome.
This was also so heart wrenching!! Even knowing the HEA was coming, it was so hard to see this resonated couple drift apart. (again, I loved this plot point - yay for doing new things in a long series) But man oh man, them coming together was just THAT much better. I think this is my first second-chance romance??? and I need more in my life.
Now, this baby is also packed with exciting series development that just adds to the "omg I love this so much" factor. I'm so excited for more books and ready to get to know the Shadow Cat guys better, they have not been on page at all just being grumpy on the side.
I couldn't stop crying for Mari and T'chai how their relationship since her cootie was turned off. It was so sad for Mari because she could no longer stand the Touches of her mate but kudos for T'chai he never gave up on Mari he really loves her and will do anything to make their relationship work and to make Mari smile again aww he is willing to give up sex to be with her how sweet is that. I loved this couple so much and wow the twist in the end? This is getting exciting *squee* Also Ruby after Raven story can u please write R'jall and Flor? I think they could be a good match because she is funny and his not lol thanks Ruby xx
3.5 stars -- I wish this book hadn't been so focused on the past timeline for the first 3rd of the book, as it felt quite anti-climatic since we knew what was coming. That said, LOVED this exploration of a mated, committed couple who are struggling with their sex life. This is something we don't get that often in the series, and I thought it was really nicely done
