My Review

Genre-wise this is historical with some paranormal elements.
It takes place mostly in Scotland in the year 1206 and there is a heavy mythological vibe influencing the story.
Also though set predominantly in Scotland this does include a mix of Scottish history and also Norse mythology.
The main character Magnar and his men are actually Norsemen while Elspeth is Scottish so it’s a blend of the two cultures.

So the language used here I found to be quite formal with a lyrical flow as well.
All the descriptions including the intimate scenes were quite pretty in there delivery and it was very reminiscent of some of the earlier romances I used to read in the past.
The paranormal element comes into play in as such that Magnus the hero of the story is the leader of a group of men the elite guard to King William the Lion of Scotland who can also shift into wolves.

The heroine here Elspeth flees with her young nephew after her home is attacked by the king's enemies and finds herself seeking refuge and the protection of the king.
On his orders, he arranges her marriage to Magnar.

So romance wise I found this to be quite sweet and low angst.
It’s one of those arranged marriage type historicals which I do really like.
Theme wise I found this to be quite unusual I don’t think I’ve read this particular mix before.
But although I did enjoy this it was quite slow-moving in places especially the first half and I also wasn’t completely sold on some of the more formal language and flowery descriptions.
It was well written but there were times I struggled to believe in the connection forming between Elspeth and Magnar there was just something slightly missing for me originally and Elspeth seemed to go from not wanting Magnar as a husband to totally accepting him quite swiftly.

Fortunately, during the second half of this, I connected better to the story and started to believe in their feelings towards each other.
I also would have liked more focus to be on the fact these men were shifters I thought there wasn’t enough emphasis on this fact and it was a wasted opportunity.
So yeh overall this felt heavily geared towards being more of a historical with some mystical moments and it didn’t actually feel very paranormal at all.
This is not an actual criticism just an observation.

So don’t go into this expecting it to be heavy on that genre front as this is predominantly a historical romance.
Overall this was an enjoyable read and I thought it had some imaginative ideas
It was also steeped in lots of history and Norse mythology which I really did appreciate.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Magnar (The Wolves Of Clan Sutherland).

Yowza. That is the only thought that comes to mind and right after I read the prologue! The blending of man and wolf from ancient times who are loyal to King William, the Lion of Scotland. This is Magnar, an elite guard, leader of the Sutherland Wolves, from the house of Alpin. This is his tale and can I say, it is a fast paced adventure as only Mary Morgan can pen!
From the landing of his longboat on land and the horse he rides, this author brings the scenery alive to the point you can feel the cold water spray out hero. There are several forces at work as Magnar finds out he was born a twin and he and his brother were pulled apart. His brother to be raised by others.
When he returns to the King, he finds the head of Castle Steinn, a friend, has been slain and the King asks him to marry the man's sister and take in his young son, who will be ruler one day.
Full of adventure, intrigue, fantasy, strong passion and a journey that will capture your imagination, I cannot wait for the next in this series!

Just re read still 5 stars! Love it.

Oh MY well it had a slightly “Twilight” theme (yeah Stephenie Meyer! I loved those books!
But this one I had to say was much better because it had Scottish/Norse Warriors, awesome right!
This book was amazingly well written, the plot was good! I am excited for the next book Rorik’s story! You definitely fell in love with several of the characters and hope to see them again especially young Cheiftian Erik!
Plot 8(1-10) steaminess 8(1-10)

Good book!

Magnar by Mary Morgan
The Wolves of Clan Sutherland #1

Elspeth is hiding with her seven-year-old nephew, Erik, during a battle within their clan’s fortress waiting to escape and flee to safety when the book begins. Their chieftain and many others have been killed and they must depart in hopes of reaching and then requesting assistance from the king. They will be found and aided on their way, be faced with decisions impacting the future and be challenged in more ways than one before the story is brought to its conclusion.

What I liked:
* Elspeth: determined sister to the chieftain who wanted to keep her nephew safe, retake their home and remain free to marry for love. Her time in a convent converted her to the “new” religion although
* Magnar: strong leader of the Wolves tasked with protecting the king and others. He is a bit mystical, formed through ancient magic, half man ~ half wolf, and rather intriguing. He has a king to protect, a twin to find, invaders to thwart, men to lead and a wife to woo.
* Erik: an intelligent child with potential to become a great leader.
* Magnar’s Wolves: follow Magnar and have all the attributes and characteristics that Magnar has. They are interesting and add to the story. I believe Rorik may have his story told next.
* Thorfinn: Magnar’s twin brother sent away at birth to live with his mother’s people. He intrigues me and hope we get to see more of him in future books of the series
* That the evil dudes were thwarted…at least for awhile

What I did not like:
* The people I was meant not to like: Ketil and Halvaard
* That Thorfinn was sent away…his parents should have been able to come up with a better way to handle the situation.
* Magnar’s ability to hold a grudge and his short fuse – though he did manage to rein it in most of the time. Hated that the temper kept him from making peace with someone he loved.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? I think so

Thank you to NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press LLC for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Magnar MacAlpin is the leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland, and his first loyalties are to Scotland. He rules with an iron fist while his allegiance is to protect King William. When a group of Norsemen attack and murder a friend of the King, Magnar is thrust into marrying Elspeth, the sister of the murdered chieftain. From the moment he meets her, he is captivated. Her tongue is sharp which warms his blood and her beauty casts a spell over his senses. She doesn't believe in the old ways and her beliefs are with the new Christian god. How can they trust each other when they don't believe in the same gods? Can they learn to love one another and see their differences as blessings, or will their marriage leave them bereft and without love?

Magnar is book one in a brand-new Nordic shifter series by Mary Morgan. My anticipation of this book had me plunging into reading the very first chance I got. Magnar is a complex hero with a definite dark side to him. He battles with his wolf and many times has to constrain his inner beast. Elspeth, on the other hand, is a breath of fresh air and brings light to Magnar's soul. I liked the contrast they brought to each other. Mary Morgan illustrates the conflict between the old Norse beliefs and the new Christian beliefs. The plot moves at a good pace. The conflict is quite intense and while I won't go into detail here, the antagonist is pure evil hidden behind a benign face. The romance is emotional and carries the plot along. While I didn't care for some parts of the ending, it is definitely a HEA ending. I applaud Mary Morgan for adding her own spin to Norse mythology. Her intricate historical details make this a must-read. I can't wait for book two. Highly recommend!

Wow! Just Wow!
Where to start with Magnar! This story began with such a huge impact and never let up right until the end. This story was absolutely mesmerizing and had me so riveted that once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down until I read the last word. I loved the storyline, I loved the characters, I loved the excitement, I loved the suspense, yes you get my drift, I loved everything about this book. I am so excited that this is the beginning of a new series, because if this book is an example, it is going to be another incredible one from Mary Morgan. I didn’t think I could enjoy anything as much as her Dragon Knight series, then she came out with the Fenian Warriors and it was just as wonderful and now it looks like she has done it again! The Wolves of Clan Sutherland promises to be another winner in my opinion. Thank you Ms Morgan for allowing me to read an ARC. I am going to be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.

What a great start to a new series! Mary Morgan’s unique style – magic, mysticism, and strong, noble characters whose emotions run deep -- lends itself beautifully to the paranormal, shifter romance. That’s to say nothing of the beautiful, Scottish scenery she describes, the sexy, sensitive love scenes, or the wonderful secondary characters who add so much to the story.

Her characters are not sweet and simple. They’re complex, tormented individuals who ultimately find solace, love, and life in each other. I adore Magnar and Elspeth. They’re perfect for each other, which seems impossible at first. I spent a good portion of the book holding my breath, wondering how they would get past that which divided them. But the author made it work out beautifully, so sweetly. We can only wish that more such love and acceptance existed in this world.

One of my favorite aspects of Mary Morgan’s writing – and there are many as she’s one of my favorite authors – is the way she weaves magic and mysticism into her stories. It’s captivating. Another is the true nobility of her characters. I’m sighing as I type this. It’s impossible not to love the characters or get caught up in the story.

Mary Morgan is a master storyteller. Her stories read like legends of old. Don’t miss this romance, first in The Wolves of Clan Sutherland series -- historical, paranormal, spectacular.

Mary Morgan is back with a new series: The Wolves of Clan Sutherland.
This was an engrossing read sweeping me into the world of Norsemen and Scots at the turn of the 13th century. Magnar McAlpin, leader of the wolf clan, is sworn to protect the Scots King. When a friend of King William, Chieftain Gunn of Castle Steinn is murdered by those disloyal to the King, Magnar accepts his King’s order to marry the chieftain’s sister, Elspeth to protect her and her nephew, Erik, a boy of seven who is now the new chieftain of his clan.

With this premise I dove headfirst into Book 1, Magnar the Barbarian, a tale of competing politics and beliefs systems, and the story of the mythical wolf shifter, Magnar, whose bloodline is both Scots and Norse and whose loyalty to his King and ferocity in battle is unmatched. Ms. Morgan’s gift with narrative tension caused me to turn pages well into the night and when I finally slept, I dreamed of sea voyages, epic battles, seers and magic amulets as well as the fierce love between Elspeth and Magnar.
In the end it is Elspeth, Magnar’s mate who brings this tale to a powerfully satisfying conclusion and the delightful epilogue sets the scene for the future books in this series. I can’t wait to read about Magnar’s loyal friend and wolf shifter Rorik and Ragna, the seer who is as powerful as she is beautiful, Thorfinn, Magnar’s twin and adversary, and even the young chieftain Erik when the moment arrives to tell his story.
The glossary at the beginning is helpful and gets one into the mood of time and place. Recommended to those who love historical fantasy.

TW : Killing, Bloodshed, Kidnapping and death of a fmily member.

This book follows our main character Magnar who is the clan leader for the wolf pack that serves the king and prevent war between two kingdoms.
.
First, This book has shape shifting werewolves, set in historical Scotland with sassy female main characters and alpha males. That right there? I was sold. The characters introduced in this book were really different in the story setting sense. The way the world operated with respect to their beliefs and hierarchy was interesting to read about. Magnar was a proud, unforgiving and a ruthless main character with a really big heart who secretly yearns for normalcy, acceptance and the sense of belonging. And Elspeth was strong, sassy and took nothing less when it came the safety of her nephew and her new life. These two characters had so much spark, energy and character between them, it was amazing to read about.
.
Coming to the plot and character development, since the world setting was quite different from the other pnr books I've read, it took some time to familiarise myself to the story, but after that it picked up super fast! The pacing was quite fast and the way the happenings were described left you wanting more. The plot itself is quite simple, but the progression and it's portrayal made it seem really adventurous and really fast paced. (which is a good thing in my opinion). The only thing I didn't quite like was, sometimes a scene ends abrubtly and blunt. And few scenes were really fast paced, it took a minute to adjust to that and then it goes back to a different scene. But that's my opinion and you might enjoy it!
.
Overall, this was a solid read, and one which I read in a single setting! If you are a fan of Paranormal romance in Historical scotland with shapeshifters, seers and kidnappings, then this is your book!

Great book! I highly recommend it. This book begins by introducing us to Magnar McAlpin the Leader of The Wolves of Clan Sutherland in Scotland. Magnar and his Clan of Wolves who are also men are loyal to the King of Scotland, and fight to protect Scotland. His good friend Thomas Gunn ruler of the Castle Steinn was murdered by Barbarians, leaving behind his beautiful sister Elspeth and his ten year old son. One of these Barbarians is Magnar's twin brother Thorfinn who fights with the enemy against Scotland. The King commands Magnar to marry Elspeth so that he will be the ruler of Castle Steinn, and can watch over Thomas' son until he reaches the age and has the knowledge to rule for himself. At first, Magnar reluctantly agrees to wed Elspeth, but he does really like this plan. However, once they are married, he quickly comes to love her and she loves him. This story is full of action and adventure, with romance thrown it. What Morgan does so well is weave her Scottish fantasy with historical facts, to make a great story you will not forget. And I think this is the first book in this series. I can't wait to read the next! Check it out for an entertaining read!

Loved it! In this story Magnar and Elspeth find themselves ordered, by the king, to marry. That presents a problem, as their differences are vast and neither of them desires a spouse. But, the king is the king, and his orders are to be obeyed, so they comply. Off they go to remove the villians from her home and restore peace to the land. There is so much going on in this book, and if the reader looks closely, they will find: religious intolerance vs. relgious tolerance; good vs. evil, legend vs. truth; power hunger vs. innate leadership....not to mention emotional growth and self-awareness. There are lots of surprises and aha moments, but the most wonderful thing about this book is that it immediately pulls you into another place and time where your imagination is activated and your heart is engaged.

This is a great story that is well written and entertaining. Both Elspeth and Magnar are strong willed individuals who have a hard time bowing to the wishes of others. Forced to marry by the king, they slowly form a bond that is eventually based on love. This is an action packed story that is worth reading and one that I would highly recommend. This is the first book I have read by this author but it will not be my last.

Magnar MacAlpin and Elspeth Gunn meet under difficult circumstances. Her brother, Thomas, was killed and the King of Scotland wants Magnar to marry Elspeth and return to Castle Stein and take care of the person responsible for Thomas’ death.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m glad I signed up to read the ARC from Hidden Gems because I think I’ve found a new author to read. Yeah!

The H and h are very likable and the getting to know each other was very well written. This one made me laugh, tear up a little and smile a lot while reading. There is a HEA and a foreshadowing of the next book. I can’t wait to see how Rorik and the Ragna’s story turns out.

Taming the beast

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Magnar! I am looking forward to this new series by Mary Morgan. Great storyline and characters, Mary is such an amazing story teller that you have no problems envisioning what you are reading.

Magnar is the leader of the Clan Sutherland wolves, they are tasked with protecting King Richard, the lion and Scotland. The Clan is steeped in tradition and magic and Magnar lives for his duties until an order from his King changes his course.
Elspeth doesn't know what to make of the big brooding handsome man, he has the ability to make her firing mad and so insane with feelings she has never had that when she gets the news of a marriage she isn't sure whether to be mad or rejoice.

This is a novel that drew me in from the first page. The characters, plot, and the culture with its beautiful scenery makes it hard to stop reading. Each character is so well fleshed out that they feel like a part of your family and I couldn’t help laughing, crying, and cheering them on.

The plot starts out with an idea that I have not seen before. This novel deals with the gods of Norway and Scotland: Oden, Freya, Jiroh, and Loki to name a few, along with druids and seers.

A long time past, there had been a huge war between Norway and Scotland and the people cried desperately to their gods for vengeance. The druids and seers prayed to the gods and the gods gave the ability for volunteers of man to be able to turn into wolves and their human forms to be stronger than before.

During the reign of King William of Scotland, the leader of the wolves, Magnar, finds out his mother has passed and has held a secret. He has a twin brother. This is supposed to be impossible as the magic is supposed to allow only one child in the family to be able to change. Otherwise there would be fighting for dominance and one could be killed. This situation causes his heart to ache as he thought his brother should have stayed with him instead of being sent away and Magnar didn’t know what had happened to him. He had made up his mind that he would ask his brother to join the Southerland wolves. His brother’s story weaves in with Magnar’s along the way.

Then things get really interesting when we are brought to castle Steinn in Scotland where a Lady Elspeth, the sister of the Lord of the Castle and her nephew Erik were attacked by Bandits who killed the Lord. After escaping they were lucky enough to run into some of Magnars men who escorted them to King William. As Erik is now the Lord of Steinn castle, the King sends Magnar and his men to reclaim the castle. There is one catch, the bandit leader Halvard has declared that Elspeth is his wife and thus he is the legal lord. To solve the issue, the King orders Magnar and Elspeth to wed.

I love the character of Magnar. He is driven to protect those under his care and is extremely loyal especially to one man, King William, The Lion of Scotland. He has ties to two countries as most of his men do, both Scotland and Norway. He is a man who holds his emotions under control, and he is confused by how strong his feelings for Elspeth are. I enjoyed the way the author had him interact with the wolf, although the man is alpha he is in touch with what his wolf needs and makes sure that he gets it. It’s enjoyable watching him fighting his feelings and his lust of Elspeth. He is a man of honor as is shown by the vow he gave her, saying he would not take her in the marriage bed until she allows it. It’s also sweet watching him with Erik, taking him as a ward and showing Erik how to become a leader. It melted my heart.

Elspeth is another wonderfully developed character. She is a strong woman who takes everything that life throws at her with strength and forbearance. She follows the new religion of today and this causes some friction between her and Magnar as she feels uncomfortable about his religion. An example of her strength is how she protected Erik on their journey south. I enjoyed watching her fight her feelings for Magnar as they journey onwards towards Stienn to regain the castle. She even inspired loyalty in his men. Her stubbornness is legendary, not allowing anything keep her from completing any task.

Then there was the adorable Erik, who is only about 6 years-old and now holds the burden of learning to become a lord. It twisted my heart knowing that his childhood was lost to him forever, and increased my hatred for the barbarians who attacked the castle and killed his father. Watching him grow is impressive and Magnar’s men recognize a great lord waiting inside him. It’s also sweet watching Magnar take a great interest in his education and they develop a bond that is strong as iron.

Another great part of this story is the language the author uses. It’s just like hearing the old language yet it is still understandable. The scenery is beautifully described, with its mountains and wonderful forests with clear streams.

The love between these two people is sweet but hot at the same time. There are some wonderfully described love scenes. Loyalty runs throughout the whole story and keeps the wolves a tightly knit community who will give their lives for each other. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the culture of the time. I highly recommend this book not only for the romance, but for so many other reasons that are too long to list. Just make sure you have plenty of time before picking this up, as you won’t be able to put it down.

This book was such an interesting, intriguing, stimulating, and thrilling read!!!

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this book, but it was an overall enjoyable read that included complex and well described characters, intense and enthralling action scenes, and a creative story line filled with deep, rich, historical content.

I loved that this book was inspired by the author’s previous trip to Northern Scotland and the Orkney Islands. You can feel the creativity leap off the pages as you delve further into this story. The author takes you on an extraordinary trip filled with lavish details that open your eyes to a whole new time and place.

I liked Elspeth as she was a bit of a spitfire, sassy, strong, and kept Magnar on his toes! Magnar was definitely the more rough, brooding, complicated, muddled character with a darker, secretive side. He was a tough, fierce leader of his group, the Wolves of Clan, Sutherland and his loyalty and devotion to Scotland was admirable. I really liked that both characters were quite stubborn which certainly made for some entertainingly witty banter!

I loved the amount of historical content and precision. The author is clearly well-versed in the cultures, traditions, and rituals of the Viking age as she comfortably integrates their practices into a creative and clever tale! Combined with her own unique advantage having spent time in Scotland only further added to the reliable and credible details throughout the story line.

I also really enjoyed the in-depth amount of research the author did while constructing this book that is strongly featured throughout the story. That plus her love and passion of all things historical is clearly evident from page one.

I enjoyed the story line and felt engaged in the story structure and plot points. The writing was steady and easily flowed.

I also really enjoyed the extras the author included in the book. At the beginning of the book there is a glossary of old Norse terms, which was especially useful as this book featured many old Norse phrases throughout the story that helped keep this book convincingly in the Viking age. The author also attached a list of, “The Nine Noble Virtues of Wolf Lore,” which was a great introduction to learning the rules and ropes of Wolfe Lore. In addition, at the end of the book, the author included a “Note from the Author,” which provided further insight and understanding into the story and the author’s process. And mentions exciting details for book two in the series!

I liked that the author used old language and terminology in her writings as it made the story feel more time-period accurate.

There are some predictable scenes. However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This book is Book One of The Wolves of Clan Sutherland Book Series. However, it can be read as a standalone.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it! I think all historical romance readers, Scottish/Viking fans, and paranormal romance lovers will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

PROMISES TO BE AN EXCITING SERIES

This is Mary Morgan’s third series. I was fortunate enough to acquire an ARC (advanced reader’s copy). I expected a delightful read, since I fell in love with her Fenian Warriors and Dragon Knights Series. I wasn’t disappointed and know if you loved her two previous series, you’ll keep reading Morgan!

The prologue and first chapter set the story. With my eagerness to get at the heart of the story, I didn’t take the time to appreciate the setting, nor the Magnar’s inner-conflict. Dear reader, don’t make the same mistake I did. (I reread that portion)

It’s obvious how much thought and research went into creating this world. World-building is one of Morgan’s forte with her imagination, making it all believable.

Norse and Picts mythology play an important role in The Wolves of Sutherland series, as does magic. Who doesn’t love magic? I did a little Googling of the gods mentioned in dialogue. It’s fascinating. If you are anything like me, I love to learn something from a story, aside from the entertainment factor.

In the first few pages, we learn about Odin, a god with many talents, including skill with divination through runes and magic. Magnar calls upon Forsetti, the God of Justice, pleading to know what he should do, Rorik utters the name of god Loki. Then there is Dagda, referred to by a young Erik.

A powerful Seer, Ragna, lives at Magnar’s old home, Kirkjuvagr (pronounced 'kirk-u-vaar), in the Orkney Islands. She calls him home to tell him his mother died and gives him two letters his mother wrote before she died. These letters change the direction of his life.

The fun twist to this story is Magnar and six others, guards to King William of Scotland are both man and wolf. The plot thickens when Magnar finds out his twin brother may be alive and endowed with the same magic, making him man and wolf.

Elspeth and her nephew escape by foot from Castle Steinn during a battle to take over the castle. Her brother, the chieftain, is killed. Elspeth escapes to the forest. Her only thought is to protect her seven-year-old nephew, Erik Gunn. With no horse, no food or shelter, they both are very vulnerable, making them easy pickings.

Elspeth is loyal, spunky and open-minded. She accepts, albeit slowly, the idea of beings, both man and wolf, and the magic that created such. Can she live with the ideas of magic and gods and still be a believer of her religion?

She gets to find out when the King commands her to marry Magnar. Their rocky start adds spice, even though both are drawn to the other, daring not to admit it. It’s a delicious romance that seasons the story, allowing the reader to get to know both these characters.

Book 1 additionally introduces all the guardians, but most time is spent with Rorik (wolf), friend to Magnar. Rorik doesn’t like Ragnar (obviously that’s another story). Gunnar is intriguing because magic from the old religion touches him, while his faith is in the new. Young Erik Gunn is a delightful character and thinks beyond his years. I see him straddling both religions and accepting them. (my opinion—could be way off, but I’ll find out!)

Morgan’s pen is powered with magic of days gone by! I hope you join me in reading this series and if you haven’t read her others, please do!

Although Mary Morgan arrived on the publishing scene not too long before self-publishing soared, this traditional author has left her mark with tales full of heroes who are handsome, but in no way perfect. Her heroines are gutsy, and in a lot of cases are time-travelers who can hold their own with archaic but kind warriors. It is not only her characters who shine, but her love for anything historical when it comes to Scottish or Irish lore. As by now, you probably can tell I’m a fan of Ms. Morgan’s, and her latest release Magnar is romantic, filled with excellent characters, and fortunately for fans, is the 1st book in The Wolves of Clan Sutherland Series. Magnar MacAlpin’s future is unclear. Just as the past he thought he knew had become blurred. His responsibility of being the leader of the Wolves of Sutherland, and an unwavering supporter of King William of Scotland could be questioned if the lie his parents told ever comes to light. The injustice of their deceit will haunt him until he finds the brother he never knew. But before he can attain permission to begin his quest, he is tasked with a mission from his king. Elspeth is gutted when her brother is murdered, but her duty is now to the new chieftain, her young nephew. She and Erik are running for their lives. Her goal is to keep him safe and to reach the king. She knows she can trust the Scottish ruler—not like those who came in peace and then slaughtered the people of Stein. Her path for safety takes an unexpected turn, but she does end up succeeding in her goal. Not only will the king protect them, he will make certain her nephew will have a guardian until he can function as chieftain on his own. Magnar is unlike any man she’s ever known. His handsome looks are a foil against his heathen ways and brash manner at times. But there is something about him that calls to her soul. Magnar isn’t happy with the king’s edict, that he wed Elspeth, a woman who tugs at his heart, to prevent her from being forced into wedlock with an enemy of the king but will not disobey his royal liege. Elspeth is of a like mind, she has no choice, but to be truthful, relishes the idea of finding out more about the warrior’s wolf. If you are looking for a romance filled with anticipation, unexpected twists and turns, and an ending that will surprise and delight you, run don’t walk to get Magnar on your-to-be-read list. You will not be disappointed.

It was amazing what Mary Morgan did for time travel in the Dragon Knights. Now she is it doing with shifters. Magnar is the first of her new series The Wolves of Clan Sutherland. One totally captivating read that left me wanting more of this group of elite protectors.

"Fortune, destiny, chance, providence, luck--threads of fate woven on the loom of life," from Dragon Knight's Shield is the perfect way to explain this story too. In fact, misfortune is turned around in Magnar, though it would not seem possible when the tragedy of the opening scenes take place. The romance is as touching as it is intense. Many would have had to work at arranged marriages but Magnar’s and Elspeth Gunn’s was truly inspiration. There is a lot we can earn about respect, honor and loyalty from these two.

Having visited the Orkney Islands and Northern Scotland several years ago, I remembered Magnar fits so well with some of the views of the people we met even in the 21st century. It was like I did the time traveling this time to where it was just beginning with the mixed views on the Scottish rule. The world build is simply marvelous. Then to experience the coming together of the old and what was thought of as the new religion added to it. I have always thought that Ms. Morgan did detailed research before but this time she outdid herself.

The intrigue does not end completely with this story though the romance does. I had questions just as the characters did. My fear like theirs is that more will come from that direction in the future. Also several characters were introduced in this first book. It makes it difficult to choose who I hope to receive the next HEA. One who has had a difficult life or one couple that stood out as needing to solve some serious opposition with each other. Either way I can hardly wait for the next book.

The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Elspeth and her young nephew Erik barely escape a siege at their home Castle Steinn. Magnar, leader of King William’s elite guard The Wolves of Clan Sutherland, returns from a mission with distressing news only to be told the best way to restore peace is if he marries Elspeth, returns to Castle Steinn, and ousts the bandits laying false claims to the castle and Elspeth's hand in marriage. Their adventure starts with instant attraction, different faiths, and unknown foes intent on gaining power. Will Magnar’s old gods and Elspeth’s one God bless their mission and their union with favor and success?

“Magnar” is a historical Viking romance rife with passion, humor, magic, and danger! A saga teaming with studly men who just happen to carry the magical ability to become fearsome wolves. A turbulent love story of a faithful sassy heroine with a protective stubborn nature who brings unexpected light to the broody commanding leader of the aforementioned studly men. Throw in a precocious young lad, an opinionated beautiful seer, an astounding family secret, and humorous, rowdy studly Vikings to keep readers turning the pages. Oh Yeah, don't forget the murderous pillaging villains with evil plans to be thwarted by The Wolves of Clan Sutherland (studly Viking men). Mary Morgan has scribed an entertaining saga of a studly, honorable Viking man and a spunky, fearless Scottish woman who lean on faith, family, and fealty to help them overcome danger, tempt fate, and grasp a destiny of love. It also should be mentioned, there are a few studly Viking men in this tale just begging her to tell their stories too, and so will her readers

If I could give magnar more than five stars I would because it definitely deserves more stars! Ms. Morgan has created this brand new series and it is definitely a winner. The plot and storyline of the Sutherland Wolves is a great concept. In this first story, Magnar is the leader of the Sutherland Wolves who are King William's Elite Personal Guards. He has just returned from a summons to his homeland and there, he receives some stunning news. At his return to the king, he learns that a friend has been murdered and his small son and aunt are there for assistance.

Elspeth has fled with her 7-year-old nephew from their home castle after her brother was murdered as well as several members of her clan. Her extreme goal is to save her nephew who is now the new chieftain of their clan. The king and his elite guard are determined to help her.

This book is a page-turner. There is a lot of intrigue, danger, passion and intense emotions all throughout. This is such a great start to this series that I can't wait until the second one is available for purchase. Mary Morgan is going to be very successful with this series. I never thought she could top the Dragon Knights but with this series will be right up there. It is going to be extremely successful.

I highly recommend Magnar!

This was my first time reading a novel by Mary Morgan. I appreciated that the author provided the glossary of Old Norse Terms and The Nine Noble Virtues of Wolf Lore At the front of the book because I went in with this knowledge. I liked that the prologue was written as a legend and felt this did an excellent job pulling the reader into the story. The prose was very well written and as I was reading it was running through my head like a movie prophecy in the opening scene.

Magnar was very alpha without being overpowering and Elspeth was a strong female without idiotic tendencies. Both were well written characters with developed personalities. They listened to each other and for the most part communicated well. Even with the differences in religion they were able to compromise and work through things that would be major relationship challenges. I loved the additional characters and cannot wait for future books.

Right at the beginning we are introduced to the antagonist and we clearly see the direction the story is heading, but this does not detract from the reader’s enjoyment. There was plenty of loving and suspense to keep the reader fully engaged. The author does a good job with dialogue. The flirting and sexual innuendo between the hero and heroine is fun and adds both sweetness and a little heat to the story.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy Isabel Cooper, Donna Fletcher, Lynsay Sands, Mary Wine and Hannah Howell.

Mary Morgan's fantasy paranormal saga continues with this new spin-off series about the Wolves of Clan Sutherland, guardians of Scotland's Kings. These elite guards are wolf shifters created but the blood of wolf and eagle mixed and united with the powerful magic of Fae and Norse god Odin and Pict god Dagda. They are loyal to the King but their roots are from all the ancient tribes creating a bridge to them. This adventure is about the leader of the elite guards Magnar MacAlpin, the Barbarian, in his search for his unknown twin Thorfinn.

Elspeth Gunn finds herself at the King's fortress with her nephew Erik, who is now the new Chieftain of Castle Steinn. Her brother Thomas welcomed Northmen who came to trade goods and form an alliance but betrayed & murdered him instead. They now hold her Castle Steinn and send a demand to King William for the return of his supposed promised bride Elspeth. King William decides to marry Magnar and Elspeth and send them back to retake Castle Steinn. Along the journey Magnar, believer in the old religion and Elspeth, follower of the new christian religion must find harmony in their union. This adventure gives us seer prophecies, lots of action and dangerous journeys. I loved the glimpses into old tales, magic and opportunities for ancient warriors guarding gateways to the gods get time on the page.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've just finished reading this book and I must say that Mary Morgan has completely outdone herself! From first to last page, you will be enthralled and won't want to put the book down. Magnar and Elspeth's story is filled with hot passion, suspense, danger, wolf shifters, magic, etc, and honestly, the whole story is completely mesmerizing.

Magnar is what heroes are made of and Elspeth is what heroines are made of....both have very strong characters and together, they make an enchanting couple. Although theirs is a forced marriage, it doesn't take long before emotions take over. I loved how Elspeth handles learning that Magnar is part wolf, as well as accepting their religious differences. Their adventure begins when they travel back to her home which she and her nephew had escaped when it was attacked and her brother slain.

With this story, the author takes you away to northern Scotland and the Orkney Islands, places I would love to visit one day! In fact, after I finished reading the story, I went on Google Earth and explored the Orkney Islands:) One can tell the author has done her research! If this is an example of what the rest of the series will be like, you can bet I'm looking forward to reading it!!!

I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love fantasy and paranormal romance and this book did not disappoint.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley

Magnar is the first book I’ve read by this author and now I am a fan. It’s such a layered story and Ms. Morgan does an amazing job of weaving history, lore, and romance throughout the book without losing pace and momentum. The world-building immerses us into the lives of the characters.

Both main characters Magnar and Elspeth are multi-faceted. Strong, honorable they both strive to do the right thing no matter the personal cost. I enjoy a fiery heroine as well as a hero who can appreciate her. The secondary characters were also engaging.

I love fantasy and paranormal romance and this book did not disappoint. There were sex and language, but neither was overdone and not inappropriate for the genre. I look forward to reading other books by this talented writer, who obviously goes to great lengths with her research.

Set in 1206, this book is steeped in history and romance with a touch of shapeshifter and magic. Magnar is the first book of Mary’s new series Wolves of Clan Sutherland. Magnar is their leader. The Clan is tasked with protecting the king and Scotland. Bound in traditions, secrets, and magic Magnar lives for his duties until the king’s orders conflict with everything Magnar believes. Not to mention the woman who can arouse, enrage, and bewilder him all at the same time. Not a easy feat nor one for the faint of heart.
Enter beautiful but determined Elspeth with her nephew. She’ll do anything to protect the boy except… Magnar can enrage, enthrall, and bewitch her. Her feelings for this handsome brooding Scotsman are like nothing she has experienced before.
Mary has once again created fantastic characters and wonderful descriptions that will whisk you into the story where you find yourself rooting for the hero, cursing the villain, and swooning with the heroine. I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.
