It’s a short read and I finished it within an hour. It’s a very different short story about a janitor who is filled with wisdom and inspired people around him. The synopsis sounded interesting so I rolled the dice and took a chance on this one. Thankfully my gamble paid off pretty well and I really enjoyed reading the story.
I was completely impressed by the story and would give it 5 stars. I don't know, I just know something in me clicked.
If you’re looking to read something easy and short, would definitely suggest you to read Chief by John Lyttle III.
Next time your in the bookstore or browsing through Amazon or any other online website, peruse a few pages, you'll see what I mean.

I received a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Chief is not the sort of story that I typically read. But when John came to me asking if I was interested and sent me the super short blurb, I couldn't help but be intrigued.
We follow Chief, who is the janitor of the building as he interacts and share his wisdom with the different people who work in the building. We also follow Greg, who is the CEO of one of the companies in the building, as a scandal occurs.
Chief is a super quick read and I read it in one sitting. Although it is short, it took me a little bit to get into the story and once I was, I had finished. I really wish that Chief was longer, I think it would be great to get to know the characters more and what truly drive them (Although, I'm pretty sure it is money) and to find out more about the scandal. The twist at the end was magnificent, my jaw dropped and then I just had to live with no knowing anymore.
Although Chiefs colleagues come to him for advice, I honestly found some of the advice annoying and too easily accepted. He talks to one of his colleagues son's (who is twelve) and he just takes what Chief says on board and accepts everything from then on. I found this super unrealistic, because you know, what twelve year old would actually listen to the janitor from their dads work?
Although short, Chief was a magnificent quick read that ended on an exceptional high.
For a short story there was so much character description. Well written and easy to follow plot with multiple lessons to be learned from Chief. This is a quick uplifting read, if you ever need one.
I’ve never read a short story packed with so much heart and wisdom. It was a page turner right until the very end!
The story involves Chief, a janitor, who cleans the 5th floor of one of the wealthiest high rise office buildings in New York City. He chit chats with the staff on a daily basis and becomes friends with them. He shares his wisdom and insight as they ask him for advice on real life issues - and while doing so, takes out the trash and makes sure everything on the floor is neat and tidy. He treats all of the staff fairly, with respect, and has the perfect ear for listening to their stories. The story reflects everyday life and the decisions that people make on a daily basis.... and sometimes those decisions compromise their morals. Let’s just say karma always has a way of finding someone.
Things are not always as they seem, as you will realize when you finish this brilliant book! The ending was very unexpected and if you’re looking for a short story packed with a lot of punch, read Chief as soon as possible, because I highly recommend it!
This short story was actually a really interesting read; based around the intelligence and shared solutions of a janitor. I’m not usually one for short writings as i love getting attached and learning more about characters, however this story still made that connection accessible.
This is somewhat a “slice of life” type story, filled with human emotion, relationships and morals.
I especially enjoyed the advice Chief gave to people within this writing, even if i did not agree with some of his solutions, he treated everyone equally and with a sense of wisdom and respect.
Overall i recommend this story for EVERYBODY, because i’m sure its something everyone can enjoy, and if not, it is still short enough to give a go!
This short story aims to be a cautionary tale: Don’t be greedy, watch who you trust, love over money, and don’t judge a book by its cover being a few of the lessons covered over the span of the story. The idea to teach morality throughout the story is admirable and is done through interactions with various characters in the story rather than outright stating them. I did find that the morals of the story were handled in a way that was still a bit too obvious and a bit more subtlety would have made the story stronger.
You can easily picture the setting of a beautiful high rise in NYC and the characters all have a bit of detail, although they are very stereotypical portraits of their characters. I did like that the story centred around a custodian as that is a bit of a soft spot for me. I adore the head custodian at my job and frequently have long, meaningful talks with him. That part of the story was very believable for me and one I could make a personal connection to. I found some of the dialogue between characters unnecessary and clunky. If a character is speaking, it should move the story forward in some way, otherwise it is filler. The momentum should continue moving forward.
The majority of the story takes place through dialogue and it lacks more substantial narrative exposition, description, and action. A story cannot stand on dialogue alone. I think with additional narrative elements, the story could be much stronger and more fleshed out. I did enjoy the ending (which I won’t spoil) as a traditional comeuppance with a twist.
This was a great first foray into the world of writing and I think Lyttle will continue to grow as an author over time. It is incredibly hard to begin writing, let alone fully finish a short story. Kudos for that! I have immense admiration for a businessman stepping out into the world as an author. It is no small feat!
Ok the author came to me and asked if i would review his short novel, me at this point didn't know what to expect but I was craving to know More.
Ok even though it was such a short novel I loved it through and through , chief was a good worker and I loved how he had always good things to say to who ever he meet on his travels around the big building he called work he was wise and sympathetic towards his colleagues and was willing to help anyone out when needed , the characters might of been a bit silly or unrelateable at times , even something from a movie, but the storyline and the idea around the story was really well done , the characters were described well enough to know maybe how they would of worked in the building together . Sometimes you think he ( chief ) was being taken advantage of .. but you soon realize that its not what you think it is . I also think the author has written a well thought out piece of writing , and i was disappointed when it actually came to the end . But I liked the twist at the end , and it made me feel better about the actual overall book , and storyline. It happens doesn't it , people judge people before they get to know others , but I felt , sometimes the chief was respected , but other times not so much . But I'm glad the good got what they deserved and the darn disrespectful got what they deserved too. Great book , this has been added to my library for a great short read . So yer 4 stars out of 5 , mostly because I rarely give 5 stars . Thankyou John lyttle ||| for giving me the chance to read it . I enjoyed it very much .
“But always remember: don’t trash talk the garbage man.” • • Chief by John Lyttle III is a quick but captivating mystery. The story centres on ‘Chief’ the janitor at an advertisement firm. He makes sure everything is in order and tidy. He is kind to everyone that works there. He is much respected and liked by everyone at the office and reaches out to him for getting enlightened and to share the problems they are facing. He’s a good listener and advisor. He quietly goes about doing his duty without getting involved in other things. Due to his position at the office, many employees treat him as if he never existed for them.
The book is short and straight but has a great meaning and value. The story revolves around their scheme of defrauding the business. This book follows the saying which states that the true character comes out when no one is watching. Chief puts a unique twist into a tale of how wisdom overpowers greed.
The twist at the ending was unexpected. Mostly when I read a book I can predict to an extent that how the story will end, and this is one of those few books where I had my eyes wide open and blinking my eyes heavily for stomaching the twist. All in all, it was a good read and a recommended read for everyone. It’s a good page-turner.
🔖The author sent over a copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. 🔖This is a short that's less than 50 pages, and the story centers around the titular character, Chris Brent aka 'Chief' ― who, while working as a janitor in New York's wealthiest building ― touches the lives of several unrelated individuals & provides them with insightful words of wisdom & inspiration. 🔖Throughout the book he shares several wise advices, and a bit later in the plot, a scandal is brought to light, involving people of the very building where Chief works & spends the majority of his day. 🔖There is a motivational aspect to the story. However, in order to connect more with the readers, I wish the author explored the back stories of the characters and added more layers to their emotional & logical sides. 🔖Overall, if you have just an hour or so in hand, and looking for a short ― you can give this a read.
🔸Final Verdict: One-Time-Read 🔸Book Cover: Matches the plotline 🔸Writing Style: Simplistic 🔸Character Development: Being a short, there isn't much scope of developing a progressive arc for the secondary characters.
A little tale full of wisdom. Chief is a janitor in one of the most beautiful and expensive buildings in New York. He's friends with everyone, he's everywhere, people always come to him to get his opinion and he's there with the best advice. When something happens in the building, he appears to save the day, removing the trash of each day.
A quick reading, that makes us think. I didn't give a higher score, because I would like the story to be a little bigger so the event that occurs in the building could be better developed. And then I could have taken better advantage of the Twist plot, which was incredible, it left me smiling.
Thanks to the Author for giving me the copy of this book
Book Review ~ Chief By: John Lyttle My Rating: 4⭐️ Chief Description: Wisdom walks through the halls as a unusual janitor in NY’s wealthiest building. Its a super short story but is great! I really enjoyed reading this short story. It expressed great morals and lessons during a short time, and I really connected with the characters. I would love if this author was to write more and I would definitely be picking it up! Like I said, its really good, try and get it as its really good for a variety of people. I wasn’t a fan of the beginning though, and found it difficult to get into it, but once I did it was good!
Chief is a really short story about a building of new york. It very nicely portrays how every single person in an office have a life outside it and how it affects their work and health. The development of the story is nicely done and of course, the twist at the end gives a good message. It also shows how adversity makes us all do things that we don't really think through and how there's always someone who'll know what we did.
However, the development of characters wasn't very nicely done and things were a little superficial. But, I'll just say that if you are into reading and like short stories with a powerful message, it is indeed a must read!
I was sent this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Chief follows janitor Chris Bent AKA Chief working in a New York City office building, spreading wisdom to his coworkers. For a short story it had a decent foundation and an interesting plot: in particular the scandal towards the end. I really enjoyed the advice he gave to his coworker getting a divorce and to the woman who appeared shallow.
However, I did find the story awkward in some places with the dialogue and feel it could have been flushed out better if it was a bit longer. I think definitely could be the good start to a full length novel.
I was approached to read and review this book and I have to say, I really enjoyed it!
Set within one of New York's most prestigious buildings, Chief is the janitor. The book tells stories about his time there and the comings and goings. He has an instantly likeable personality, with stories of wisdom and moral.
The writing style is well executed, 3rd person context but with different characters.
It goes to show that money isn't everything and that kindness costs nothing.
In a world filled with liars and cheats such as we see every day, it seems, this simple tale rams home a basic truth: it may take awhile but cheaters and liars always face karma and it’s reckoning. I recommend it. It’s a particularly good read for business students.
The author sent me a PDF to review, and I am so glad! This story was a very quick read but very good. It was easy to fall into the rhythm of the story and I was captivated by where we were going. I truly didn't know what to expect, even as the story got underway, however I was having a great time. I won't say more, hoping to not spoil anything, but I really enjoyed it!
I was contact by the author to look to his book to read and to review and I really like it.
Its Chief's, a janitor, story as he work in a really high business office in New-York. And of his interaction with other people who work there. Its a great short story and recommend it.
I liked the message of this short story. But the way it was written was very simplistic and it felt more like a play with the amount of dialogue. Maybe it would do good as a play actually!
Chief by John Lyttle III is a short story following Chris Bent, known in the story by the nickname Chief, who is a janitor in a big business skyscraper in New York. His role as janitor of the top five floors in this building allows him to form connections with the employees. Slowly, people start to trust in him and ask him for advice. After a scuffle in the office arises, the importance of his role is revealed. I usually don’t read short stories, and was especially wary of this one since the blurb was only one sentence, but the author asked me to read it, and because its only 19 pages, I decided to give it a go – and I’m glad I did! This short story will definitely stay with me for a while as it presents the reader with an excellent plot twist as well as a little reality check that so many of us need. One of the positives of this book is how realistic the situation is – personal problems and back-stabbing often arise in companies, especially ones that are known for their prosperity and wealth. The pressure put on these individuals is unparalleled, so from the onset the situation isn’t all that hard to imagine happening. The advice Chief dishes out throughout the story ranges from education to love advice to moral checks, and shows that it is often those we deem inferior or low on the economic scale that have advice for those who may have not experienced the same kind of hardship. Additionally, Chief is an extremely likably character, having a great aura with everyone in the office and being someone who actually listens to them. One of the businessmen even acknowledges that his son is likely to listen to Chief because of his career, making him honest and ‘admirable’. The only issue I had with the story is to do with the business that I just mentioned, specifically that a character asked Chief to sway his son on a pressing issue in his life. How plausible is it really for a 12-year-old to submissively accept the advice of someone? It seemed a little exaggerated for the son to accept it so easily from a character who is portrayed as a simple ordinary working man, but other than that, the book carries a lot of weight. The advice handed out in this book is that of honesty, practicality, and generosity. Most of us are aware of how expensive gifts and lavish holidays from our partner doesn’t reflect on how much they love us, but it still affects how people view themselves and others. Chief’s role of letting people realise their toxic behaviour through simple advice is the centre of the book, with him representing a concept of Wisdom. Overall, if you’re looking for a quick read with an unexpected ending this book is definitely for you! I would love to read anything else Lyttle publishers and hope he receives the acknowledgement he deserves!
This story follows Chief, otherwise known as Chris Brent, as he works in New York's wealthiest building. While Chief completes his janitorial duties, he helps his coworkers by giving them advice. When a scandal occurs in the building, many secrets come out. Follow along in the daily lives of Chief and his coworkers in this story to get some great advice applicable to everyone.
Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion. This review is only my opinion, and you may have your own, different one. I would take into consideration what I say, but do not make a decision about the book solely based off of this review. Additionally, the author sent me this e-book as a free review copy; however, this did not influence my review. This is 100% my honest opinion. Let's begin:
To start, Chief is a very quick read. It is perfect if you do not have much time to read, but still want a great little story. I finished it within an hour after starting. That said, it is surprising how such a short piece could pack in so much (and no, it did not feel rushed or anything like that- the author just knows how to say what he wants to say without being verbose). I enjoyed the plot of the story. At first, I was a little worried about if it would pick up. This does not mean that absolutely nothing was happening- there was still a lot of helpful advice layered in. However, I was concerned that the cycle of Chief switching rooms and giving advice would continue. This was only worrisome because I knew how short the book is. I had no reason to worry as it turns out. There was a major plot twist: a scandal among a few members of the building. Once this happened, the story went quicker and was more interesting. The twist at the end was fantastic. I could not help but grin at what happened. I will not say anymore on this though so as to keep my review spoiler free. Chief is a very likable guy. He is the type of fictional character I wish were real so that I could become friends with them. He is very kind and thoughtful and gives the best advice. Due to how much I grew to like him, I had no qualms about reading his story ever. This story is an amazing place to go to gather some important life advice. In all of its 44 pages, valuable tips are packed in. I definitely learned some new things and thought about old ideas and stories in a new way. I will certainly be taking in the advice Chief gives along with the overarching advice in my life. Overall, this was a quick, enjoyable, and educational read. I would recommend giving it a shot- all it takes is an hour out of your time. I can promise you will learn something new and be happy that you took my advice of reading it.
Rating: 4/5 stars Author: John Lyttle III # of Pages: 44 Genre: Self-help Series: Standalone
This short story introduces us to Chris Brent, or as the workers call him; “Chief”, who is a janitor in the most beautiful building in New York. The story shows the everyday life and interactions of Chief with the employees. It shows how well Chief knows the workers he takes trash out for everyday. The employees are warm to Chief because he sees the good in these people and helps them out a lot in their daily struggles, and helps to keep them sane at times. But then, When temptation presents itself, true personalities show up and in an unexpected manner, things suddenly fall out of place.
This book was short but very full and I loved it!
I am not kidding when I say that once I started reading this, I went through it fast. When the author reached out to me, I had no idea what this was about because it only had a very vague description on Amazon. This story involves morals and realizations that are truly presents in everyday life. Once you encounter the conflict in the story, you'll stop and realize what would you do if it were you given your current situation now? It makes you step back and see things that happen every day show up in the words you're reading. hate open endings, but this ending was something different. The author did a wonderful job of incorporating morals to the story without being too straight forward about it.
I highly recommend this to anyone, it's a short story and you would not regret picking it up. It's a quick read and surely will be worth your time....And it is certainly not trash (haha you'll know when you read it).
𝚜𝚞𝚖𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚢 Chief, a building custodian, meanders about a high-level advertising firm hearing and seeing little bits of stories play out. Some have secrets and other have fears. Some look to him for advice and others shut him out
𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝙸 𝚎𝚗𝚓𝚘𝚢𝚎𝚍 -This is a typical cautionary tale to not judge a person by their uniform. But enjoyable. -super quick short sorry if you are just looking to finish something for momentum. -nice, although not surprising, ending -the crisis of the story is actually quite smart. I wish it were more expanded
𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝙸 𝚕𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗 𝚎𝚗𝚓𝚘𝚢𝚎𝚍 -heavy in the dialogue and lacking in the narration. More narration to world build and develop could have gone a long way. -it was a fine ending but not unforeseen. -it was a fine story but it didn’t leave me with any feelings of anything. I’d rather a book make me feel something even if it is negative rather than nothing. -the only female character is surface level and materially obsessed. I think this is far too cliche. -a boy of 12 is described as a young man whilst the one female character is a cliche stereotyped. I would maybe say the author needs to re-evaluate some bias involved in those character decisions.
𝚌𝚛𝚢-𝚘-𝚖𝚎𝚝𝚎𝚛 Zero cries throughout. So do with that as you please
John Lyttle III's novella, Chief, is a short story with a powerful message. In a beautiful and prominent building in New York City, a janitor by the name of Chief is favored by all. He's got pockets of wisdom and funny anecdotal stories to share with the advertising company, Turnhead.
What I enjoyed was that you get a real feeling of who Chief is and what he stands for. What you don't count on, is knowing who the person inside really is.
There were some little things like exclamations and conversation tags that distract from the story a bit, but overall the story outweighed any little issues. I wasn't sure where this was going, but I'm pleasantly surprised where it ended up.
Big thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this short story to review ❤️ going into short stories can be quite hit or miss - it’s either a good, fleshed out story, or it’s not, but this definitely delivered. A well written story about human nature, how different yet similar we all are, and the choices we make every day. There is a good cast of characters, each given background and dimension, who all add to the story in some way or another. I won’t post spoilers of course, but I will say that the ending was really unexpected, and very very good!
Chris Brent, better known as Chief, is a janitor in New York City. Well known and loved by those he works for, Chief has more wisdom and heart than any of them combined. Instilling that wisdom upon his fellow coworkers, inspires and brings common dilemmas to a forefront.
What would YOU do in these situations? Being a short story, it was a quick read but delightful.
Don’t hesitate to read quick, feel good stories every now and then.
Thank you, John, for giving me the opportunity to review your story
Wisdom walks through the halls as a most unusual janitor in New York's wealthiest building.
An engaging short story about hard working caretaker, known as Chief, set in an ad agency overlooking Central Park no less. With vibes of an ‘Aesop’s Fable’ it shows how there are far more important things in life than money.
The following phrase comes to mind ‘Be nice to people on your way up because you might meet them on your way down’
A well written quick read. I would be interested to know what else this author has in the pipeline.
I was given this book by the author in exchange for my honest review.
Chief was a delightful read. It was super short which I feel took away from the story a little bit.
But there were so many things I appreciated about it. The writing was very smooth and succinct. Very to the point. It delved into important characters and didn’t linger on ones that weren’t.
It’s hard to write a short story and I think the author did a good job.
People who shine from within don't seek the spotlight.
This story is a reminder that everyone matters, including those that people are not trying to impress. They are in fact gifted with seeing the true motives of those around them. It is with this wisdom friends, lovers, and even employees should be measured.
I loved reading Chief’s advice that he gave to all his colleagues, he treated everyone equally and dealt with those who needed it. Chief is a really good, light, easy read novel the can literally be read in an hour. I really enjoyed it and I hope you do to!
