9/28/25 tbh while reading this I kept thinking like "what will they even do for this drama" though I know adaptations especially of late have been ... honestly pretty terrible, and I haven't looked at the secondary character roles 🙄 I'm sure all sorts of stupid pointless subplots will be added to give them more screen time, which tbh if they make those good at least I wouldn't mind because this truly is one of the most unlikeable FLs I've read if not THE most. The only reason I didn't DNF because ML was SO GOOD. He's SUCH A GOOD PERSON. GOOD THROUGH AND THROUGH. Not fake nice, GOOD. Truly cares about the people. I ~joked with a number of people his "only" flaw was that he loves the heroine. (Seriously guy was imprinted/groomed too early which broke his brain.)
... upon reflection, unless people say THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING DRAMA SINCE SLICED BREAD ... I don't plan on watching it. Fuck this story. Actually a bit of interesting plot but it was just largely relentless and evil people constantly. And the emperor wasn't that smart - just fucking evil. So many plot holes and logic gaps and idiocy.

So how did I find this book? Well, my favorite couple actors were rumored to star in the drama adaption of this book so I decided to read it beforehand if the rumor did come true. (IT DID BY THE WAY!!!! AHHHH). I read this in the original language, which is chinese. Will get my hands on the physical copies soon. They divided the whole story into three books.
The story is set loosly during Tang dynasty and I absolutely loved it! I understand that not many are too fond of the FL but I could see why she became the way she became from her perspective. I adored her and Yan Shang's push and pull relationship and enjoyed how the author described things in the novel. There is angst, there is a dark past (FL), there is conflict, but two people that love each other will find a way to make it work. Yao Yao was brave and determined to make this relationship work after their separation for three years and you can see both of their growth throughout the novel.
Beside the main couple, we also have some side couples like Liu Wen Ji and Chun Hua (BE unfortunately), Wei Shu and Zhao Ling Fei (open ending) and Yang Si and Yan Xiao Zhou (BE).
Out of the three, Yang Si and Yan Xiao Zhou where the second couple after Yan Shang and Yao Yao that I really liked. You will definitely get teary eyes at the end ugh.
I'm looking forward to the drama adaption as well! They are currently filming, and I hope it will air at the end of 2026.

In Shang Gong Zhu / Esteemed Princess, the widowed Princess Danyang, Mu Wunyao, meets the scholar Yan Shi Sheng whilst stranded during a rainstorm. The two scheme against each other, and then collaborate together. At some point, they fall in love.
This was a relatively drawn-out love story about two teenagers who would never have met if not for a random coincidence. Another part of this story is the tragedy of empire (I made that up); the emperor's family can never be truly harmonious if everyone is fighting for the crown. This was not a rebirth, you do get somewhat of a parallel story in the epilogues.
It was a pretty well-done story from the same author that gave us How Can One Resist Her Endless Charm / Les Belles.
So if you like love stories, empires, and regaining your power after tragedy, then this is for you.

文笔不错，有自己独特的风格，错字几乎没有，标点符号都用对了。
很喜欢用冷僻/自造词，大部分时候用对了，少数情况下奇奇怪怪，还可以接受吧。
特别喜欢分段，却没有铿锵的节奏感。或许是为了方便读者阅读？有些分段确实是很没有必要。
男主人设尤其好，长得好看是标配了，智多近妖的年轻人，还特别会交际。前期发育的时候不显，后面进了长安、朝堂，需要面对更复杂的局面的时候这个人就特别完美了。
女主人设一开始我也喜欢的，很独特，有点刻薄有点骄傲有点自卑的受过身心伤害的小公主，稍有不慎就有惹人厌的嫌疑，但是作者写得足够好，偶尔有不喜欢的举动也能让我接受。
也是后期谈恋爱在一起之后变得没那么可爱了，就是很普通很常见的，患得患失、娇羞、口是心非，和其他晋江女主没有特别多的区别。
两个人设的改变导致在后期，我在开头时看中的那个平衡失衡了。一开始的时候女主更强势，不管是在身份上还是情欲上，她都是掌握主动权的那个，偶尔被男主挖个坑，可作调剂。到了后面，就是智慧才能爱情权谋的全方位压制，男主除了喝酒完全没有弱点，因此还成了“宠溺”的佐证，这就没什么意思了，网上有大把类似的权力关系，何必看这一篇设定剧情都不够出彩的呢。
配角里面花心思写的春华和刘文吉我还蛮喜欢的……后文命运对他们的玩弄让我对这对更加分了。
已经被踢出政治舞台的长公主我感觉也不错，后面她和冯献遇写得也不错。男主和长公主那段真是……啊即使是第二次看也好戳我。
剧情方面及格了，不带脑子读下去没有特别明显的剧情bug，但你要说写的多有意思，那是没有的，配合上作者的文笔，which渲染情绪或许有用但是其他还有待商榷，很多权谋戏我都是直接跳过的。
最戳我的就是被下了春药之后男主和长公主的应对，以及女主帮他撸，还有后面女主调戏她被拆穿之后瞬间冷下脸来那里。除此之外没有印象深刻的情节了。男主一箭射死郑家主，应该写得更壮阔一点的，结果写的平平无奇……可惜了一段好情节。

男主人设是我特别喜欢的那种！！！温柔、聪明、会跟人打交道。女主受过伤所以性格变化挺大的傲娇。目前两个吃着都挺舒服。
文笔流畅，有些转场看起来不是很舒服，但就那么一两处，问题不大。
想看他俩上床。忍着没射还写了策书走了不远才倒下的，意志坚定，就很好👍一想到才十几岁我就郁闷，晋江审查去死。
希望后面权谋的地方能搂住，最好别在完结之前男主还没登上宰相之位番外一笔带过……也想看异族首领的戏份。啊！感觉应该不会短，能不能不断更啊……
