Left in legal limbo with a murder accusation hanging over her and with only her wits for protection, Lottie Grote is determined to show the coppers overseeing her that she can detect rings around them all... And maybe (hopefully) she'll even be able to prove herself innocent in the process!
It’s somehow already Tuesday again! I feel like June is flying by us and before we know it the summer months will be over (which I love fall and winter the most, so that is tremendously exciting for me)! I have been reading so many different things lately and a few of those are wrapping up or I am close to the end. One of those is Wicked Things! Wicked Things is a graphic novel series by John Allison (the maker of Giant Days one of my favorite graphic novel series of all time). At this point in time, there are only five or six issues in this series and I am unsure if there will ever be more but so far I am really enjoying it (and still missing Giant Days so so much)!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Lottie is still in trouble with the law! Who currently believes she is a murderer, so in order to prove her innocence they are letting her help with the case but kind of under a weird police house arrest. So she is living in a house with a house arrest monitor, but this house is not an ordinary place, it;s full of criminals who also have deals with the police (like Lottie)! Lottie goes to her first day of work with the police and it turns out her entire first day and week is just getting coffee and beverages for everyone. However, one day she has a breakthrough but will anyone believe her? Or will she be the coffee girl forever?
I love being back with Lottie! I think this graphic novel series is a really fun way to call back to some familiar characters (as well as a similar art style)! I love the detective aspect being brought back in and staying a connecting thread of Lottie’s personality throughout her appearances in other graphic novels. I am really excited to see where Lottie’s detective adventure turned criminal case goes. Fingers crossed, Lottie is able to crack the case!
Of course Charlotte is onto what is happening and she's totally gonna solve this case, but nobody wants to listen...Can't wait to see what happens next!
WICKED THINGS #3, available Wednesday from Boom! Box continues the tale of Lottie Grote and all the trouble her investigative life has gotten her into. This is an issue full of frustration and irony.
Thanks to her talent and determination, Lottie has managed to make enemies out of more than one character. Now that’s all come back to bite her, as she’s been framed for murder. She received a break that wasn’t much of a break when given the opportunity (read: order) to assist the police in their cases instead.
This is something that would work a lot better if the police actually, you know, listened to her. But respect, and trust as well, must be earned. The real question is, how is Lottie going to go about earning it?
Now the plot thickens and Lottie is trying to use her smarts to get herself out of jail for being framed for a maiming of another famous detective by trying to crack some cases for the force that's keeping her behind bars.
But she's got to find a hair straightener and get herself out of the quasi-locked down situation she's in but all the while we are entertained by the expressive personality of all of the characters involved including the police chief and real police detectives.
Things are picking up now and let’s just see if our detectives actually listen to poor ole Lottie. And give her something to wear other than grey sweats... Dialogue also appears to be improving with the snappiness of a regular John Allison GN. I might have to reread Bad Machinery though, as I miss her and Shauna together.
Spider-eye smartphone, of course, why wouldn’t you want one??
