Life in the city of Lumen is filled with secrets, especially if you're a scavenging tinkerer from the Mids.
Lumen was made to keep us safe from the world beyond our walls, but this oasis quickly turned into a totalitarian hellhole where the government monitors our every move. From cyberkinetic spies to QR coded tattoos and an overly involved city guard, Lumen's technological advancements make it all too easy to keep the city's 'lowers' where they belong.
With my best friend Wade, a tech guru, by my side, we do the best we can to survive, but when one of our under the table scavenging jobs goes wrong, we dig far deeper into one of Lumen's secrets than we'd ever wanted to tread.
Starting a new life in the high-security Lumen Correctional Facility doesn't mean we escape our city's secrets, and life only gets more dangerous when the warden takes a particular interest in me. At his order, Wade and I are entered into a special work program, and we find ourselves waking up in a strange underwater prison that's not supposed to exist.
As if that's not enough, we're tasked to protect four dangerous men who are unlike any I've ever met before.
The Suit, the Alpha, the Goth, and the Daddy. The more I'm around them, the more I'm drawn to them...and seeing Wade in a whole new light. I hope there's time to figure this all out before the mysteries surrounding us before we dig our graves.
I thought Lumen had secrets, but it's nothing compared to Eden.
The Forgotten Prison Series is a WhyChoose/Reverse Harem series meaning the female main character in the story doesn't have to choose between her love interests. This book contains violence, attempted assault, and other situations that others might find triggering.
Darn. This book was so interesting and I want to rate it higher! World-building was interesting, albeit quite unbalanced at times (some descriptions are overly detailed, others so lacking I had trouble orienting myself). Character backgrounds are excellent in certain cases, in others not so much, but at least we get to know the heroine Mila very well.
But. It falls into one of the most annoying pitfalls ever.
The connection between "strong heroine" and chaos.
Goodness gracious this book is chaotic. On so many levels! Mila spends too much time in her own head, or going off on her own (or at least, that's how the authors decided to spend their time), so we don't actually get to know the other characters. The unbalanced world-building, the unbalanced and sometimes purely contradictory character behaviours, all of it left me feeling like I was in the middle of a hurricane.
I couldn't pin Wade down for the life of me, one second I thought I had him figured out with the little we were given, to then be proven completely wrong. The Wade I thought I knew at the beginning of the book was not the Wade I was confronted with at other times, which was unsettling. I also couldn't understand the cybernetics part of him. At one point he's more robot than human, then suddenly he becomes so much more human out of nowhere, and then they rip his cybernetics out and ... he just adjusts to that without much difficulty? This is part of the "strong heroine" problem - can't be in touch with your own emotions, and certainly not others' emotions. Which leaves these others a complete enigma for the reader.
The other 4 men are completely elusive. The mysterious background with Gwen etc was very nicely done, but all that delicious tension sort of just... fizzled out, while it had such great potential. I guess it's still there in Akihiro, but that will have to wait for a future book evidently. And Mila just jumping his bones? That was wtf. She's a virgin, never tried anything with Wade, but with this stranger there's no issue? This was so out of nowhere. Soren was fairly straightforward to understand but a bit flat character-wise. Also for a future book, I bet. Estvyn or whatever his name is was confusing, because... was that really the "Daddy"? I'm sorry, I've read my fair share of Daddy kink books and I'm honestly not seeing it, so that label doesn't make much sense. Unless of course he suddenly decides to develop that part of his personality in a following book.
So let's get to Merrick. After literally a few minutes of interaction with him, suddenly our heroine is forced into a quite nerve wracking situation with him where they have to unlock his powers from a box and save the prison or whatever. In isolation, this was an exciting scene. But within the context, it was a literal from 0 to 60 scenario. I felt nothing for Merrick, I didn't know a thing about him, which would have made this scene so much more enjoyable. And it all added to the unbalanced and chaotic nature of the rest of the book.
And the heroine's relationship with Wade.... The friendly banter was great. But... the heroine doesn't mention her attraction to him until way later in the book, when suddenly she claims it's always been there. I feel like the authors just decided to add Wade to the growing pile of men in her harem in the middle of the book because they felt bad leaving him out.
More lazy writing - Wade's cybernetics being pulled out, but never mentioned in detail ever again, was one of them. The assault by Jorvis or whatever the frick his name was, also lazy. And the second assault. And the third. All of it was to put the heroine in some sort of scenario or another, or to showcase something about their environment, in the crudest way possible. Bad world-building, really.
Which leads me to my last point. DO NOT put more men in a harem than the author can handle. I've read my fair share of reverse harem, so I've seen examples of good RH. This is not one. At all.
Ugh, I am almost convinced my 3 stars is too high, except that the premise and what I think the plot is going to be like (because it continues in other books), was interesting enough to have me read the whole book. Not sure I'll read the others though.
Received ARC from Author for Honest Review. I Give this Book a 3.5/5 Star Rating, Listing as 4.
Cliffhanger(?): Yes Relationship Type: Reverse Harem MFMMMM M/M(?): Possibly, but not yet. Affection Rating: 2.5-3/5, now this is NOT a bad thing. I’m glad it’s pretty low, cause I try to avoid ‘insta’ in Reverse Harem Books if it doesn’t for right. It’s not a romance as of yet. Heat: 3.5/5 Drama: 4-4.5/5 Suspense: 4-4.5
Had to get use to the setting of the world, for me it was a little bit hard to zone into (in the beginning), Especially within the first chapter which I had to reread a time or two.
Even though I love books that open the way this did. I AM a Proud Prologue Reader, and to me this book really needed to give you an insight & history of what the world ‘looks like and how it to go where it is now’. I Know a there’s quite an amount of people dislike (even hate) them, but (to me) I wanted to picture it correctly in my head beforehand, so I am able to sink in and enjoy as I am able to picture the World/Universe the way the Authors Created it. Either a Prologue or at least a Backstory, heck even a Prequel would be wonderful as a small bonus or free story to download (something like that). *Backstory being, giving insight on what happened in the events in the past before the book starts where it currently is in that world. (I Really think this book needs it)
I would highly suggest this being made into an Audiobook, sometimes ‘hearing’ the book is much better than reading cause it’s much easier to visualize. Cause moments like I’m currently having when you’re just reading a book, your mind doesn’t particularly want to work with you. Lol
All the way up to Nearly Chapter 6, for me was kinda hard to keep focus and visualize, it does come off a little compacted, not much breathing room. After Chapter 6 is a much different story, the pacing is much better and a lot more breathing room as well as much easier to picture. BUT the paces does get a bit faster than I was wanting it to, and getting to know the characters did seem to be a bit chaotic and very fast. I do wish that it had paced just a bit slower and near the end the breathing room seemed to dissipate again. Not everything has to happen in book 1, I really hope book 2 takes it easy and paces a bit better.
But despite everything it’s an interesting concept, I definitely want to see what happens in Book 2.
This book started out as a well written paranormal prison book. It grabbed my attention right away and looked like it was going to hold it with the authors throwing out both short and long term story bait. But after the first third of the story, the author descends into pure teenage drama. Yuk. Good potential totally wasted.
Nexus is an interesting science fiction dystopia. The beginning of the book was a little slow for my taste. It really becomes interesting at 40% of the book. That's when we meet all the main characters of the book. At that point, the book becomes more eventful and interesting.
I really liked Mila and her friend Wade at the beginning. But when wade meets the other guys, he becomes a little stereotyped for my taste.
I'm a little worried the story will lack depth.
I'm not sure I'm going to love this series yet. I will read the second book.
Wow what an amazing story! I loved the post apocalyptic sci-fi prison RH romance! You could probably add a few more genres too but these hit the highlights. Love Wade and Mila! Totally pre-ordering the next book!
Argh. This one is hard to rate. Dystopian future cyberpunk plus RH with MM sounded awesome. It started off so good and I was really enjoying it for the world building and found the direction the story was going to be really interesting. But then as the connections form, which are insta-connection with a twist, it's all done really odd with no build up or chemistry - just meet and kiss to more, like it's just something they are compelled to do, and then there's no talking about it or anything. It's a slow/medium burn with on page action starting towards the end of book 1, but I didn't feel any heat with it cause everything about the connection felt thin, flat and stated.
For the most part, I liked the FMC and her being a tinkerer. Her clumsy nature felt overdone at points and didn't quite have the endearing quality that other quirky characters I've read and loved have had (think Emelle from Heart Hassle or Willa from Curse of the Gods). It's mostly how the relationships come together and just kind of happen with thinly strung together connection that was underwhelming for me.
I liked the banter with her best friend Wade, and I actually got annoyed with Mila for not talking with him and for brushing off his concerns about her hooking up with these guys she just met - sure, she can't fully explain the attraction or why she feels so safe with them, but she's also being incredibly dismissive of her best friend, all while they're trapped in a prison.
I'm not sure if I'm going to continue this series. I started the second book and she starts a Daddy kink name calling with one of the guys that felt so out of place that if made me cringe. Not kink shaming, just saying it felt odd much like how the rest of the relationship stuff so far has been odd and out of place and just kind of happens.
This book is full of questions and mysteries.....and who doesn't love trying to figure out all the connections. From the begging of the book we get to see the connection between Mila and Wade. Throughout the book you get to see their relationship grow and change. This relationship is one for the ages. Even through the rough times they stick by each other. Can't wait to see more. Add in the messed up world they live in, tattoos, prison and 4 guys that mila has a weird connection too. Fixing pipes and tinkering...no problem...figuring out what's going on....?
I like the storyline and it has the bones of a good book, but feel like it's missing something. I think more depth to characters would make it flow better maybe. For me parts of it seem more like a YA novel, I keep forgetting that the characters are 24 and not 16 or 17, which they come across as. But I did enjoy it for the most part. I like the setting of the underwater prison and the dystopian world. I'm having a hard time connecting to any of the characters but I will definitely keep reading the series and see where this story leads
The concept of this book sounded so interesting. I love cyberpunk and thought since this was cyberpunk inspired that I would love it. To be frank, it wasn't the story, it was just boring to me and too predictable. I also normally love reverse harems but with this one I would have rather seen the development between the MC and her best friend only. The story itself was slightly boring and the world-building was the most interesting part. The other Love Interests were confusing and it stopped in a really weird and confusing part to me.
Nexus was even more than I expected. I loved every single minute of reading this book and I have high expectations for this series. It's the kind of apocalyptic/dystopian book that is partially believable--people depleting the world's resources until there is barely anything left to sustain the population. It was interesting to see that even though food was scarce, technology was thriving. The communication device that Mila and Wade had installed in their heads really upped the enjoyment in the book. The sarcastic banter and joking was amazing, especially because no one knew about it. I really loved that Williams and James waited until partway through the book before fully introducing the main love interests (If that isn't your thing and you want to meet them right away, you might just change your ways with this book). The wait was well worth it simply because we were allowed to get to know Mila as a character. She's not powerful by any means. She's awkward and clumsy as all get out, making her more relatable to the reader. But she has strength in what she knows. She's a thinker, a tinker, a fixer. Those skills go a long way when the world she is shoved into is one giant puzzle to figure out. This book is all about hidden agendas, and there is so much that the characters and the readers aren't given information about, but that is what makes this book worthwhile. The mystery. I desperately want to find out the whole story. Does everyone that is supposedly involved know all of the information or are they simply just a pawn in a larger game? What happened to the "prisoners" and how did they get into the situation they are now? And then there's the relationships between Mila and the demigods that will inevitably progress as the series continues. Will they fully dive in to discover who Mila is as a person or will they continue to connect and compare her to Gwen? It's clear that there is some connection, but how far does it go? Looking forward to finding out more in the next book!
Nexus is one of those books that has been sitting on my ereader for months, not really knowing why I didn't start it sooner. At the moment I'm a little mad at myself for not starting this series sooner, because I really enjoyed this first book in the "Forgotten Prison" series!
I always love a good postapocalyptic setting, and these authors managed to create a very interesting future world that feels a little too close to home at times. Still, there is a lot left to explore of this world, and how the paranormal element of Gods and demi-Gods fits within. I enjoyed discovering this world alongside the characters, and especially the prison they ultimately land in. But best of all is the relationship dynamic between Wade and Mila; I absolutely adore their banter and the way they fit together as best friends. Their relationship development from friends to lovers definitely suffers when four other men start vying for Mila's attention (and maye Wade's as well further along the way?).
I believe this book is filled with interesting characters and a wonderful world and I can't wait to explore more of all of them! A female mechanic, a man who's part cyborg, four demi-Gods and a future post-apocalyptic world; together they form the start of a wonderful series, and I can't wait to dive into the second book!
The concept is pretty cool, the writing is okay, I like the characters, but I will say I’m left a little confused a lot of the time. One of my biggest pet peeve’s that I seem to run into more often than I’d like is when the main character is in the dark about everything and the love interests hold most, if not all of the answers but neglected to share and info/are constantly interrupted when finally giving an answer/the fmc simply doesn’t ask any questions. This book has that in spades and it is driving me nuts. I did jump immediately into the next book so the line between the two is pretty blurry. I was obviously hooked despite the bits I didn’t like!
The relationships definitely move fast and seem to develop off page a little too much. I think it gets mentioned in the second book that there is a fated mates aspect but it is not developed at all but seems like information that should be shared to make a lot of what’s happening make more sense. I don’t think it was even mentioned until the ~second bond snaps into place. Even after that, there is no explanation which is a reoccurring theme in this series so far.
Realistically, this isn’t really a four star read but because I did devour it all and enjoyed it for the most part, it gets a little bonus :)
Couldn’t put it down I didn’t know a lot going into this story and I have to say it didn’t disappoint! I couldn’t put it down. This story had more drama and questions than romance in it and that isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes the insta love can get old. That isn’t to say it didn’t have some steamy times in it though 😊 This seems like a good start to a series and I am anxious to learn more about all of the characters. The first book leaves you with a lot of questions as is expected with a cliffhanger. The interaction between Mila and Wade is refreshing as you get to realize how they feel about each other with them. Seeing Mila admit to her “faults” and not be the type of character who “does it all on her own” was a bonus. Not that there is anything wrong with those characters, but it is nice to read about someone who you can relate to. I am looking forward to seeing where the next book takes us on this journey.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. I thought the blurb sounded good so I picked up and found myself sucked into this story. Set in the future people are divided among 3 classes - Uppers, Mids and Lowers. The government designates everything and only Uppers have any kind of perceived freedoms. Mila us a tinker, smart and sassy she relies on her bestie Wade for her livelihood. Wade is an enhanced human meaning he is part cyborg. When the two accidentally get involved in the middle of a conspiracy it all goes downhill from there. Thrown into prison they do their best to defend and protect each other. When Mila's skills get them moved into a place that shouldn't exist secrets start coming to light. Who are the 4 prisoners in the underwater city? Why are they imprisoned? Why are they obsessed with Mila? And just what is going on? It was a great start to the series and I need to get my answers.
Oh boy, this was a little different than what I usually read. This is more of a sci-fi feel to me and I loved every word of it. So we have Mila and Ward who have known each other for a while and they do some sketchy things to get by in life. So you have three different categories of classes. The uppers, mids, lowers and you can pretty much figure out what that is. So these two happen to get themselves in a pickle which sets them on a path that leads to crazy. So pay close attention when gods are mention. The story builds and there is action and fighting, oh just intense. I did not want to put the book down until I was finished. I fell in love with the characters but I feel like something bad will happen coming up. This is a slow burn so be prepare to settle in because when it gets steamy it is like a tease so I imagine it will get explosive when it finally happens. I love it and need more because that ending had me wanting more.
I don't recall how I stumbled across this, or what caused me to pick it up and give it a try, but after skimming it for a bit I realized this was good writing and would be capable of holding my attention, something few books are doing lately. I gobbled this up in one day. I want to be sparing with my commentary as I think part of the fun of this story is how it changes and morphs into something different than you might be thinking during the first half. It's got plenty of tense moments. Plenty of steamy moments. Some great snark and friendships and an "otherworldly" feel to it. According to the synopsis it's a "steam punk prison story"... but it's shaping up to be a lot more than that. Off to book two I go!
Okay soooooo I like this story a lot. Very mysterious. Look forward to the next book. My recommendation is this might be a binge read. It cliffhangs and questions posed aren’t really answered. A few truths and plots exposed but only enough to make you ask why. Why are the main prisoners locked away? Why is the world the way it is? Why is fml important? What is this forgotten prison? Along with many others whys and how’s. So I may actually not read the next book until I’m sure the following book is about to be released. This book is the type to have you staring at the ceiling in deep thought.
When steampunk inspiration meets up with a story with a complex mythology... Perfection!
This was a unique and interesting story! It had a mix of steampunk tech but also had a sort of mythology/god/demigod storyline that kept it grounded in a totally different world. Mila is a blend of snark/sass and naive trustworthiness. In some RH books, the men can become broad caricatures that sort of blend together, but I found each of these men to be unique and intriguing in their own ways. I can’t wait to see where this goes, especially after the cliffhanger we were teased with at the end!
The setting was interesting, the worldbuilding was nice, but it wasn't for me. There was a feeling I had towards the book about Wade that really didn't sit right with me - which I wont get into because of spoilers, but I felt he didn't get the ending the book built up to and it contibuted to an anti-climactic malaise after it ended. I get that it's part of a series, but seeing as it's the first book there should still be that feeling of an act had come to a close, the denoument, before the next book.
I feel like if given the chance, this could be made into a good WebToon (if it hasn't already and I'm late to the party.) As a novel, it's eh.
If you like cyberpunk 'why choose' romance with insta-love elements, then give it a go - why not. Just remember buy the next book in advance.
OMG. Freaking LOVE this book. Fans of Jarica James and Suki Williams will enjoy this newest RH collaboration written by these fantastic authors. It's got a post-apocalyptic vibe, filled with gods, mystery, shenanigans, and just enough steam to leave you wanting to know more. Who are these mysterious sexy guys? Who is this woman they keep mentioning? What does this symbol mean and why does it keep showing up everywhere? Cyberpunk, plus prison, plus a bunch of hot guys... SIGN ME UP FOR EVERYTHING!
I am sitting here feeling completely flabbergasted after finishing Nexus. I am so invested in Mila's story that I don't have words. The book pulled me in from the first couple chapters and kept me on edge through to the end. Each of the characters was so unique in personality that I was only pulled me deeper. The writing flowed flawlessly with a bit of drama and steam to boost it even more. I am so beyond ready for Broken that the wait for October is going to really suck
Wow. Just wow. This book had me from the beginning. The world building is absolutely stunning. I love these co-writes especially when they come together so seamlessly as this one did. I'm an avid reader and this may be the most unique book I've read in a while. The storyline is suspenseful while still being familiar so even those who wouldn't normally gravitate toward this will definitely love it.
So I'm going to start off by saying I was never into dystopian books I could never get into them. but this book right here has changed my perspective! I was sucked into their world of chaos and destruction and high tech and what some people will do to survive. This book had me on the edge of my seat I barely put this book down and that ending killed me I need more. I can't to sink my teeth into the next book. Definitely five stars from!!!
A futuristic/dystopian secret world of magic and gods? Color me intrigued
This was not what I was expecting when I decided to start the sample if this book. Post-apocalyptic/dystopia is not my preferred reading material but we did get to see a hint of magic early on that intrigued me to figure out what the heck was going on. I think this is an interesting idea and am definitely going to check out the next book!
This book was like a puzzle. The setting is in the future so I liked that they explained how the world worked. A few chapters in is where it gets interesting. Mila started noticing things that were odd. This book captured me because I want to know what is going on with Mila and the prisoners she is guarding. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Steampunk, futuristic, intriguing, and RH! Sign me up. This is everything you get with this book and so much more. The story was so unique, Jarica and Suki did a great job setting this story up and I absolutely can't wait see where the series is going to take us! If you're look for a captivating and unique start to a series grab this book now!
Slow burn RH isn’t my usual jam but in this instance? I’m willing to wait for the steam. The world building and the character build up are just fantastic. I keep going back and forth on who the big bad is. Also. Imma lick Aki because he’s a jerkface. Can’t wait to see where this goes! 💜
This book was wholly unexpected and a wonderful read. A delightful mashup of cyberpunk, dystopian and PNR themes, it delivers the best of these categories and builds into something wholly unique. The characters are interesting, the mythology unconventional, and on the whole, it was a truly enjoyable read.
