The Marquess of Haven has finally decided to do his duty and settle upon a bride, preferably before the new year begins. What better place to find her than a country house party? There’s just one problem. The beautiful widow who once owned his heart is also in attendance.
Surely there’s no harm in indulging in one night of passion with her, just to get her out of his mind. But Haven is about to discover old habits are hard to break, especially when the consequences last forever…
Publisher's Note: This story originally appeared in the collection Lords, Ladies and Babies. This is a new, extended version never before published, including an exclusive sneak peek at the next book in The Wicked Winters series.
USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
Plus I hated they were separated for five years. She was forced to marry a drunk cheating abused because she thought Haven had deserted her. She had a horrible married life. He enjoyed his bachelor years and is now looking for a wife but he hates her for not waiting for him. They each believe the other betrayed them but their passion remains. They eventually talk but not until after he humiliated her at a house party. Just an okay read but not up to her normal standards. They were both with other people while apart. She with her husband and he with other women. She hated it because her husband was a brute who liked to hurt her. I do think they loved each other though but I just didn't get that special feeling at the end of the book. Even with the good epilogue.
Not sure how much I liked this, and since I was the one reading it you think I would know.
An understandable misunderstanding prevents them from marrying, but as it seems with romances, contemporary or historical, the heroine bears the brunt of tragedy/punishment from miscarriage to an abusive husband to being humiliated in spades by the hero because he thinks he was spurned. The poor hero suffered by inheriting the title and having to make do with sex from other women.
I will say that Scarlett Scott has the BEST book covers though.
Immature main characters. (Especially the hero and how he treated the heroine at the end of the house party and how vacillating/indecisive and irresolute the hero was in the past about marrying the heroine and dealing with the issue with her father.)
Annoying and unlikable hero. (The hero was weak and malicious towards the heroine… etc.)
The OTT stubbornness from both main characters.
Sensitive issues/serious issues are written/handled in a rather tactless/thoughtless and almost dismissive way. (Abuse, domestic violence, miscarriage etc.)
Rather thin/flat plot.
Kind of flat and uninteresting main characters.
The romantic build-up and chemistry was rushed (even for a shorter story/novella) and unconvincing/lacking.
The miscommunications and misunderstandings were too OTT. ( Especially since they had known each other and been friends for a while... before anything romantic happened.)
The character description/visual appearance of the heroine is a tiny bit on the vague side…. But also somewhat contradicting. (There is some information/ description about the heroine…..like eye color, hair color and some information about her body type/shape…. but it is a little bit sparse and somehow also a little bit contradictory… she is described as having a lush figure and being buxom... but also in other descriptions there are hints at another body-type/body shape with words like trim etc. so it is confusing/ contradictory.)
Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice of the hero. (In all the books I have read by this author so far ...More or less all heroes are rather similar in looks/ appearance …. Tall or very tall, muscular, handsome or very handsome… what little dissimilarity/differences there are is that they have different eye colors and hair colors not much more.)
Believability/plausibility issues. (The OTT miscommunications and misunderstandings… That a Duke would have such issues with his daughter marrying a second son of a marquess … A marquess was the second most senior rank in the peerage. That the heroine did not tell the hero what her late husband did to her and what she endured in their marriage. That there was no real effects on the heroine from the years of abuse and neglect she endured in her marriage and from the miscarriage she had... that almost took her life. The main characters forgave each other too easily and Never really properly and truly talked things out… everything was just glossed over etc.)
There was No comeuppance for what the heroines father did to the heroine and the relationship between the main characters. What he did was more or less shrugged off as nothing.
Too much of the relationship and attraction between the main characters was based on the physical and there was way too little emotional development.
Formulaic/predictable.
Rushed. (Even for a novella.)
No real grovel from the hero … for how he treated the heroine… he never really redeemed himself enough.
Super steamy intense enemies to lovers/past love reaunited page turning novella perfection. Loved this one. Smoldering with lust and angst. Another Wicked Winters win❄💕
I was worried going into this book that I wasn’t going to like it based on some reviews. So I’m pleased it wasn’t a 1 star. I do see how he purposely embarrass her, but I was expecting a public humiliation and it wasn’t, so no TW for that needed. However he’s very selfish and though he doesn’t think he did anything wrong in the past he actually wronged her. Then jumped to so many conclusions without actually speaking to her it made him not a very likable character.
TW did mention of spousal rape and physical abuse along with miscarriage.
I felt so bad for the heroine. All of the men in her life who should cared for her did not. Her lover, her father, her brother, and her husband. She truly had no one to support her. In this book she does open up to one of her sisters who sees it for what it is/was and reassured her that she never deserved any of the abuse from the men in her life.
They work out their issues in the end, obviously, by actually talking. Imagine that. But still the hero doesn’t do it for me.
I will add that the title doesn’t fit. There is no wooing in this book. Angry sex, yes, but wooing? No.
I always enjoy a good Scarlett Scott book and her Winter’s series is one of my favourites.
We’ve moved from the sisters to the wider family and friends all present at the Winters house party featured in the other books.
Graham and Hannah meet again at the party , but although they connect once more on a passionate level , they cannot forgive each other for the treatment they believe was instigated 5 years previously. If they both feel wronged and won’t admit to their abandonment, how can they possibly solve the issues in their relationship. What is going on and who had a hand in all this pain and heartbreak.
A wonderful book and well written. Some great characters and addictive reading too .
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
I whizzed through this short story. This was about Hannah and Graham, who were young sweethearts. They wanted to marry, but her father made her marry another. About 5 years pass and they meet again at a country house. A lovely HEA. 4☆
Sigh.. I love everything this author pens and this is part of The Winter series which is simply fabulous! She could not believe it! There he was, the Marquess of Haven! "The man she had loved, once upon a time. The man Who had scorned her and made a fool of her The man she would never ever forgive." She knew she should not have come to this ball but she had to escort her two younger sisters. As much as she tried she could not stop her gaze going to him. Graham could not believe she was here! Of all the times when he had decided to look for a wife. Why did his heart still respond? A romantic sigh worthy tale told with all of the wit and beloved characters that this author always brings to life. I could not wait to see what would happen!
I originally read this in the Lords, Ladies and Babies collection
Wonderful story of love to enemies, back to love. Graham, Marquess of Haven and Lady Hannah Fawkesbury were once planning to marry, but misunderstandings broke them apart. Seeing each other again at a house party brings back all the feelings that just can't be denied. Wasn't sure at first if I liked the style of the story - back and forth from then and now - but it worked, and it made it easy to see the reasons for their feelings. were great characters you were rooting for right away. Highly recommend this extended version of this story, even if you already read in the collection Lords, Ladies and Babies.
The Marquis of Haven has finally decided to do his duty and settle upon a bride, preferably before the new year . What better place to find her than a country house party? There’s just one problem, and she’s Hannah the beautiful widow who once owned his heart. Surely there’s no harm in indulging in one night of passion with her to get her out of his mind. But Haven is about to discover old habits are hard to break, especially when the consequences last forever. Oh my this was one sizzling read, a second chance romance where both Graham & Hannah tried so hard to hate each other but as the saying goes it's a fine line between love & hate. I devoured it in a sitting & loved every word. A shorter version appeared in the Lords, Ladies and Babies: A Regency Romance Set with Little Consequences
The magic of the Winter house party continues as another pair fall in love...again!
The Plot Graham, Marquess of Haven has decided to finally do his duty by his title and marry and quickly. To that end, he is in attendance at the Winter house party, what he did not know that she would be there as well. The woman he loved, alright still loves, the woman who broke his heart and threw him over to marry another, the woman he hates! When Lady Hannah decided to chaperone her sisters at the Winter house party she did expect to see him there, the man she loved, alright still loves, the man who broke her heart, the man who did not come for her in the hour of her greatest need, the man she hates! But pride makes for a cold bedfellow, so why not wrap yourself up in the warmth of passion and indulge, just this once?
My Thoughts - Scarlett Scott is the queen of novellas. Her stories are fresh even if the tropes are common. This one is no different, the plot is cute, paced well and read like a novel. - I enjoyed the lovers to enemies to lovers trope where scorned ex-s reunite. The prose is wonderfully written, which is not a surprise considering it's Ms Scott's writing. - The characters are lovely albeit slow with personal development but no complaints here. The novella is high on emotion and rife with mistrust & misunderstanding. - The character arc felt complete, coming full circle towards the end. The flashbacks of their courtship gave insight into their love without it coming across as back & forth. An honest conversation in the middle of the book would have solved their issues and the rest could have been about rebuilding trust but that's probably the therapist in me talking. - The "revenge by passion" felt a little comical but, oh my, were their intimacies steamy! The H&h's love, scorn & passion were believable and effectively placed. - I did not particularly enjoy the 5-year separation but that would explain why the hate & mistrust built. - Hannah's anger was absolutely justified. Graham's anger was more about his pride being hurt
My Recommendation Even though it was a spin-off novella it worked great. Read it, loved it, read the whole series, you should too!
I first read this when it came out in the Regency anthology Lords, ladies and babies. Graham and Hannah are two lovers torn apart by circumstances and misunderstandings beyond their control. Graham being the second son of a Marquis in the eyes of Hannah's father is not a suitable match for his daughter Hannah as he has his eyes on a bigger prize and title. Despite fact that they are in love and that Hannah is carrying his baby, her father allows her to believe that Graham has forsaken her after taking her virture. His sudden departure without so much as a letter or fond farewell only reinforces this, which is further reinforced when her letters to Graham go unanswered. Her father gives her an ultimatum either give up her child or marry Fawkesbury. Due to Graham's preceived abandonment she marries Fawkesbury only to lose her child months later. Now 5 years (4 years of marriage and 1 year of mourning) on after the death of her drunkard, violent gambling wretch of a husband she is out of mourning to act as chaperone to her twin sisters Addy and Evie at a house party at Abingdon House only to find that fate has conspired to place Graham now the Marquis of Haven due to the untimely death of his older brother from a riding accident. Long buried feelings come to the fore and a night of unadulterated passion leads to consequences that once again pulls them apart, his belief that she has betrayed him for a title and hers that he had played her for a fool. Will Hannah be brave or strong enough to tell Graham that once again that he is to become a father or will his pride prevent her from being admitted to his presence when Hannah decides to take matters into her own hands and confront him in his lair and will she finally find out the role that her father played in their forced separation.

1.5 stars This book was certainly the weakest of the series so far. The writing was as if this was the author's first book and if it was, I would have been more understanding, but obviously it's not, hence the low rating. The plot goes like this: Hannah and Graham are in love and in a secret relationship. Of course they want to get married but since Graham is the second son of an Earl, Hannah's dad is against it (this is why they keep their relationship secret). One night Graham gets the news that his brother (and firstborn) is badly injured so he leaves leaving Hannah a letter. Hannah doesn't get the letter but finds out she is pregnant with a child of someone who "abandoned" her. She writes to Graham but doesn't get a response. Eventually, her father gives her an ultimatum and she marries a horrible man instead, to hide her pregnancy. After 5 years a widow and childless Hannah (she had a miscarriage) meets again with now the new earl of Haven (since his brother died) Graham, and although they hate each other they can't fight the attraction that is still there. After having sex several times, Hannah gets pregnant again, she goes and find Graham and that's when they finally solve their misunderstands BY ACTUALLY TALKING. They find out that her father was intersecting the letters and that is why they both felt betrayed. Then they get married and live happily ever after. This book has one of my most dislike tropes. The we-are-too-dump-to-actually-talk-it-out- and instead-be-mean-to-eachother trope. Not only that, but I got bored with their stubbornness and I didn't like the chapters that were separated into Then and Now-mostly because I didn't care about the Then. It felt like the author put it there to make the book longer.

I read this story when it originally appeared in the collection Lords, Ladies and Babies, but this is a new, extended version never before published. In a Christmas country house party held by the Winters, the Marquess of Haven is looking for a bride, preferably before the new year begins, but after he is reunited with the beautiful widow who once owned his heart, any thoughts about marring someone else fly through the nearest window. Hannah, Lady Fawkesbury, is in the country house as a chaperone for her sisters. But once she sees Graham after five years apart, she knows that she is never going to forget him…or his betrayal. Surely there’s no harm in indulging themselves in one night of passion, just to get each other out of their mind. But they are about to discover old habits are hard to break, especially when the consequences last forever… I was instantly in love with both characters. You can feel their love for the first time they find each other again. There’s so much passion, so much sexual tension between them! But also so bad memories and heartbreak. I couldn´t put this book down!! (something that usually happens to me with this author!). This is a beautiful short story about love, second chances and explosive chemistry! The sex scenes are HOT but I mostly enjoy the dialogs, the speed of the story and the so obvious love between Hannah and Graham. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Starring Graham Dowling, Marquess of Haven and Hannah Spencer (née Saltisford), Countess of Fawkesbury. Past lovers and Second chance tropes.
My heart truly hurt for Hanna and Graham. Unfortunate circumstances tore them apart just when their young love was blossoming... and years later, destiny brought them back together. But this time they have emotional baggage to workout. You know the song... “coz you are the magnet and I am steeeeeeel”? That truly describes Hannah and Graham. Despite the fact that these two feel resentment towards one another... the attraction is still 100% there.... and these two couldn’t keep their hands off each other. I absolutely looooved their combustible chemistry. Hannah and Graham are haaaaaaaawt, y’all!! I totally cheered when they finally got together.
I bought, read, and enjoyed this story as part of the Lords, Ladies, and Babies anthology. I received a complimentary copy of this extended version. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
My star system: 4 1/2 stars Book was great. Loved the characters. Gave me the feels and aaaaaaalmost made me cry in some parts.
Scarlett Scott has succeeded in presenting another sizzling couple that should have been together years ago. Graham Dowling, Marquess of Haven is attending a house party to find himself a wife. It had been 5 years since his older brother's death and Graham was forced into title but it had also been 5 years since the only woman he ever loved had left to marry another.
She was standing in the room with her younger sisters at this very house party - Hannah Spencer, Lady Fawkesbury, a beautiful widow now. She was there to chaperone her sisters and was not aware that the man who crushed her heart 5 years ago was invited to the house party until she saw him standing right across the room.
There was miscommunication, lies told by family five years ago and a love that never left either one of them for the other but how can they go back five years, do they really want to, and can they learn to trust? This was such a lovely second chance read for a wonderful couple!
The Marquess of Haven has decided to attend the Devereaux Winter’s family festivities and start searching for a wife. Across the ballroom he see the one lady who broke his heart, and he still loves the Hannah the Countess of Fawkesbury. Hannah is panicked when she sees Haven at the party, she’s here to be a chaperone for her sisters not renew old acquaintances. She feels he betrayed her, he never loved her and did not answer her call for help when she needed him most. He feels she didn’t really love him, she went and married a man with a title making him feel like a complete fool. I loved this story of lovers reunited, passions flare as their misunderstandings come to light, but is it too late to have the happiness they were denied. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
I first read this book when it was in the Lords, Ladies, and Babies collection, but this updated and extended version is SO good. Graham and Hannah are given a second chance at love - and nearly succomb to the same issue that kept them apart the first time. This extended version gives a wonderful view to their first romance and foray into falling in love and shows the parallels to their second chance. It was an incredibly moving way to tell their story.
Even if you've already read these two characters in the compilation, I highly recommend you revisit them in this stand-alone. You'll see Scarlett Scott's amazing chemistry come to life in both their young love and their second chance. Such a great story from one of my very favorite authors.
I received an advanced copy of this book, but all opinions are my own!
Love this series but somehow this one didn't fit in. I just now read the description on Goodreads and see that it was part of another collection first. That makes sense. When I read the intro to the next book, I finally realized that our heroine Hannah is the sister of the twins who married Winters and of Max who married the Winter sister, second set. Not I get it. The reunion of the two former lovers takes place at the Winters' house party. Hannah's father did not allow them to marry five years before and both thought the other had abandoned them. Graham had been called away to his brother's deathbed, but his letters were withheld from Hannah. A good read, but not my favorite in the series.
Graham is in need of a wife. The house party he has been invited to seems like the perfect place to start looking. Too bad Hannah, the woman who broke his heart, is the only woman to interest him. He can't seem to stay away from her...
Hannah is at the house party to chaperone her sisters. She never imagined that she would encounter Graham as she had done her best to avoid him over the years. But after all these years it appears that the attraction between the two has not dissipated. While the hurt they both endured is still fresh, can these two make another go at it?
I absolutely adored Graham and Hannah's story!! A must read!
I love second chance romances. And this story doesn’t disappoint. Due to a misunderstanding in their past Hannah and Graham harbor deep hurts. Neither thought to ever see each other again but a country house party finds them together. They can’t fight their mutual attraction. Do they really hate each other as much as they say or can they find the lasting love that was meant to be. I love how the author goes from past to present in the story to give you the history of Hannah and Graham together. You will love this book.
I totally loved this story the first time I read it in Lords, Ladies and Babies collection. It was well written. It's a page turner and I was glued to the end.
Marquees of Haven decides it time for a wife and goes to a country house party only to run into the one woman who broke his heart years ago. Hannah is widowed and at the country house party to watch over her sisters. And notices the one man who broke her heart is there. They both believe that the other one is the one who broke their heart and promises. Unknown to them is the truth.
This book is truly swoonworthy! A second chance, enemies to lovers trope story that draws to me a story every single time. The back and forth banter is delightful, the sexy times are so sexy, and the tension is off the charts. I think this is one of the most romantic stories I have read. It is delicious.
In my original review for the anthology (this version is extended so you won’t want to miss it), I asked what happened to Adele, now I know she will be in another book, yay!
Graham, Dike of Haven and Hannah, eldest daughter of the Duke of Lincross met 5 years ago, fell in love, and consummated the union. They get separated for 5 years due to interference by the Duke, both think the other is at fault. Fast forward to the Winter Country House party where they meet again and get busy. Hannah's twin sisters Adele and Evie get there own story in future books with Adele's story next. The story goes back and forth from past to present, I guess in order for the author to rewrite this book to fit the series.
This has been a great series for me, I have enjoyed all the Winter sisters, and even though this is a shorter book, it’s still a nice addition to the series. Hannah, having been married off by her father to an abusive man, is now a widow. Haven was the man she should have been with, if not for her father. When the two meet back up, the sparks are still there.
The reunion was beautifully written and it was nice to read a book where it wasn’t a young debutante as the heroine for a change.
This was a beautiful story of lost, but not forgotten, love. I loved everything about this book, the love/hate relationship, the shared past, the dialogue ...it was great! I read this when it was part of a book of short stories and again with this latest release—it was even better.
You still get Scarlett’s beautiful narrative, great love scenes and it doesn’t feel rushed. I could not put this one down.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
What fun, I was able to read this in Lords, Ladies and Babies and I'm so excited that we now have an extended addition to enjoy. Marquis of Haven, Graham, winds up at a house party while searching for a bride. He was in love once with Hannah, now a widowed Countess. Misunderstandings tore them apart, come love heal their pain and help them find their way again? Romance and steam abound in this story.
Hannah or Han was a widow from a monster she had married as a young innocent girl who thought she had no choice! Graham was a young man in love a second son who spent 5 years trying to get over the woman who owned him! Events conspired against him and he and Hannah were more or less pawns in this thing called life! When headed exchanges give way to desire will secrets be revealed or will they get a second chance?
