An Unlikely Proposal by Toni Shiloh is a fabulous modern-day marriage of convenience story. Often novels with this trope, especially in contemporary storylines, seem unrealistic, but Toni Shiloh reveals convincing reasons why the two best friends should marry and creates a delightful tale that readers are sure to enjoy. The gorgeous cover draws readers into this book, but the incredible writing keeps readers invested in the storyline until the very last page.
Best friends Trinity Davis and Omar Young consider marriage as a solution to both of their problems, but soon realize that their feelings for each other take a surprising turn. Omar’s adorable young daughters and their toddler antics add humor into the story, while Trinity’s health issues are realistically portrayed.
Toni Shiloh continues to bring a needed diversity to Christian fiction, and her writing style is very appealing to readers of contemporary romance.
An Unlikely Proposal is highly recommended for readers of inspirational fiction and fans of Love Inspired Inspirational Romance.

If you asked me for my top two favorite romance-novel tropes, I wouldn’t hesitate at all to say ‘friends to more’ and ‘marriage of convenience’. Imagine my giddiness to discover that Toni Shiloh’s latest romance combines both of those tropes. Throw in the diverse characters and that absolutely adorable cover and I was happy dancing when my copy arrived in the mail!
Even with such high expectations I had set for An Unlikely Proposal, Shiloh still managed to exceed them. The characters are so richly layered, as are their interactions, and I fell head over heels in love with all of them – especially those precocious little girls! Having a heroine with type 1 diabetes added to this book’s unique qualities, and I really enjoyed getting to know Trinity and understanding more about her health needs. And Omar – oh be still my heart, Omar. He’s super swoony (fireman, daddy, best friend, hello!) and his deep, long-held friendship with Trinity allows their marriage-of-convenience to make perfect sense, an element that often falls a bit short in contemporary MOC stories, An Unlikely Proposal being a notable exception. I also really appreciated how their marriage progressed in a way that felt natural to their friendship and their situations – again, it made perfect sense and stayed consistent with the well drawn layers that Shiloh wove into their story.
Bottom Line: An Unlikely Proposal by Toni Shiloh is a perfect blend of friendship, family, romance, and faith. The story stays entertaining and engaging from start to finish, and readers will easily adore Trinity, Omar and his precious little girls. Warmth, affection, breathless chemistry, a bit of sass, and situationally appropriate awkwardness – all of these emotions spring off the page so vividly just like the characters do, and you will likely find yourself grinning often as you read. I feel like I say this about every new Toni Shiloh book I read but this is her best yet! I loved everything about it and I hope for more stories with these characters.

I have a certain fondness for marriage of convenience stories but it isn't often that a contemporary romance featuring this trope can fully draw me in because it just seems so unbelievable in the 21st century. But guess what? Toni Shiloh not only drew me in, she kept me in a read-in-one-sitting frenzy because Trinity and Omar's situation is so believable.
Best friends for years, they have supported each other through some tough situations and they adore each other in a platonic, I-don't-want-to-do-life-without-you kind of way. Then they get married and their world suddenly shifts as they try to navigate a new kind of relationship. It takes them a while to figure out that falling in love doesn't have to mean the end of a beautiful friendship. Happy, happy sigh. I'm all smiley faced and warm fuzzy-ed up. :-)
The girls are hysterical in the way only toddlers/preschoolers can be. Sunny smiles one moment, petulant pouts the next. And what an adventure Trinity has adjusting to their 24/7 care. I went from snort-laughing to "ahhhhh!" tears in nanoseconds.
I so appreciate the depth in the inspirational thread. This hero and heroine live out their faith, especially when it comes to prayer. I chuckled/cringed over Omar who had a tendency to tell God exactly how he wanted things to go because I'm prone to do that. Better not to leave a conversation with God open-ended 'cause He might just lead you somewhere you don't want to go. :-)
Y'all know I pretty much adore all of Toni Shiloh's stories but this one set my expectations for a level-up reading experience... then proceeded to blow those expectations through the roof!
Trinity and Omar's dedication, devotion, and determination create a modern-day marriage of convenience plot that is easy to believe in. Those adorable little girls are the perfect balance of sassy and sweet.
The plot, characters, and heart of An Unlikely Proposal are extra wonderful and genuinely delightful. I highly recommend this book!

In her novel An Unlikely Proposal, author Toni Shiloh brings to life a heartwarming and inspiring story of faith and romance. This charming story marvelously blends together two romance tropes, friends to lovers and a marriage of convenience. This is a light, cute, and easy read story that booklovers will thoroughly enjoy. And to add to the fun of the story, there are two adorable little girls that brighten the turn of every page as well. A story with plenty of tenderness and heart, readers will easily connect with and fall in love with the genuine and sweet characters. This is another fabulous story that fans of Shiloh are not going to want to miss!

It is not an exaggeration to say that I've been waiting for months to read a book by Toni. I've seen her books all over and was super excited to read one. My favorite part--and what drew me in--was the characters. They were so lifelike and I really felt all their fears and hopes. Another notable thing was the families. It is not often that you find such supportive families in fiction and it was so refreshing to see a family that loves and cares for each other. It was even better than I could have hoped for. I laughed and felt all the emotions of the characters. All in all, this one definitely is one to add to the top of your TBR.

The friends to more, the darling little girls, and just everything fell into the sweetest story that I had to start rereading my favorite parts over after I closed it.
Shiloh did a spectacular job with somewhat common tropes and turned them into a new and fresh story that I just couldn't help but love.
And, the firefighter side of the story was wonderful! There really aren't enough books out there with firefighters who you actually get to see the realness of the profession or volunteers. I loved, loved, loved that the book was so real without being telly or made to seem informative.
I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
"But what I can control are my own actions. How I love every person God's placed in my life. How I share that love with the time He's allotted me."
Toni Shiloh always brings heart-warming tales full of faith to her readers and this story is no exception. I really enjoyed this contemporary marriage of convenience story between two best friends Omar and Trinity. It's a bit unique in that Omar and Trinity are best friends and grew up as next-door neighbors. So when they start their "marriage", they know each other so well that things seem to fall into place naturally, until their hearts start wanting more than just friendship and mutual help for each other's dire circumstances. Omar's grief for his deceased wife and fear of his newly discovered feelings for his best friend are very real, as are Trinity's fear of rejection after being abandoned at the altar and her blossoming love for Omar and his daughters. I loved Omar's tenderness with his young daughters and they definitely added a deeper layer of emotion to the story. Anyone who loves contemporary romance with a strong faith thread will totally enjoy this book.

Let me say this book definitely surpassed all my expectations!!
I know we've all been there... that isle of books at the store with the Harlequin titles trying to decide if we want another feel good, know how its gonna end type of story. LET me advise you. This book IS NOT your typical Love Inspired book (of which I will admit to reading ... almost everyone published). I had to do a double check of the page count with this one honestly. Toni Shiloh managed to fit SO much depth of character, layered background, and faith based elements that I was enamored of the book from the beginning and scratching my head wondering how something so marvelous could come out of such a tiny package!
I loved the plot, a true friends-to-lovers/ girl-next-door/ marriage of convenience story that I have.. uhem already reread. I loved Omar's little ones that Toni Shiloh filled with life and love. Plus, I really enjoyed the circumstance that Toni Shiloh put Trinity and Omar into! Great chemistry and awkwardness between the two of them.
Overall, one of my favorite reads ever in terms of modern character development and storyline. A definite 5 star read you DO NOT want to miss!
*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.
"I've read a few modern marriage-of-convenience stories in the past few years and enjoy the perspectives of why a couple might marry in this day and age without love. I have also enjoyed seeing the dynamics of how a couple learns to not just honor their spouse but to love them as well. So, naturally, I was very curious to see how Toni Shiloh would handle this...
As I have come to expect from her stories, An Unlikely Proposal had a strong focus on spiritual issues Trinity and Omar faced. How can you really know what God's will is when it is related to something that isn't clearly spelled out in the Bible? I loved that they sought older, respected people in their lives for insight instead of just jumping in and doing what they thought was best. And I especially loved that Omar's relationship with his former father-in-law was so close and that they respected each other as they did.
I especially appreciated that the way the focus was on the loneliness Omar and Trinity experienced as a married-in-name-only couple and on their relationship instead of a growing physical attraction. It was made clear, without stating it outright, that there was a bond that grew from friendship to a deeper kind of love. Their journey was fraught with difficulties as they had to navigate a brand-new type of relationship. My heart ached for Trinity, especially, as she tried not to overstep her bounds and yet needed to feel like a wife and not a guest!
Omar's daughters added both stress and humor to the story. They were adorable and full of trouble! And instead of making Trinity into an insta-supermom, she struggled with fitting into their lives as they had to learn a new normal and develop a new relationship with her. And, oh, how I laughed at the bath incident!!
If you enjoy Christian romance, do consider An Unlikely Proposal.
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
Childhood friends agree to a marriage of convenience after Trinity loses her job as the school librarian due to budget cuts, and the passing of Omar's mother-in-law, leaving him without someone to care for his young daughters Faith and Joy. Heartwarming, and at times humorous, this sweet romance was enjoyable from beginning to end. I loved the great character interaction, tight-knit small town community, and Omar's adorable daughters.
Well developed characters, with a believable situation, and I admired the fact that both Omar and Trinity took their vows seriously and were in it for the long haul. I liked how supportive the towns people were of their relationship, I liked that the Fire Chief encouraged Omar to spend more time with his wife, and how Trinity's mom was so excited to be a grandmother.
Overall, a highly enjoyable romance of convenience and I loved that they were friends first, had strong faith and were committed to their relationship no matter the outcome. Faith and Joy were well written and I liked that they had their moments of not being perfectly adorable all the time. An enjoyable love story, well worth the read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I pre-ordered this book five months in advance. That’s how excited I was for new content from this author, and she did not disappoint!
Right away, I was very happy to see some Type 1 Diabetes representation since I have a younger sister with the diagnosis. I’ve only read a handful of books with this factor, so it’s always a delight to find one. One major aspect of the T1D sideplot didn’t quite seem to line up, but the rest seemed carefully researched and honest.
I absolutely love the banter between the main characters. They have such a wholesome, amazing friendship, and right away I could feel that they had known each other for years. I was definitely rooting for them to become more. <3
Trinity was a fantastic character, and I loved how much she threw herself into motherhood and caring for the girls. Her struggles with fear and letting herself love hit me hard. I went into this book expecting trope-y cuteness and got all of that + a good dose of spiritual truth I was needing. ;)
My only complaint is that sometimes the internal dialogue got pretty repetitive, but that was just a small downside compared to the goodness that was this book. ;)
Definitely a perfect Valentines’ read. <3
Quotes… “But what about us? How will we keep in touch?” “Funny thing.” He paused. “There’s this technology that allows you to video chat. Your face will pop up in this screen right here on my phone.” “On a phone? Get out.” His body shook with his laughter. “That’s right. And my face will appear on yours.” “You’re pulling my leg.” “I’ll pull your hair if you’re not careful.”
Traveling with kids seemed to require a lot of time and extra baggage. Every time she was out and passed another mom, she couldn’t help but give a head nod in solidarity. They’d packed the kids for an excursion and were battle ready.
CW: deaths prior to the story, medical emergencies, one character is a firefighter.
This fun modern marriage of convenience story will warm your heart, especially with the toddlers in the story. Talk of death, walking through Type 2 Diabetes and dangers of firefighting are not things this book shies away from, but in a tasteful manner, you will enjoy every page and feel like it was a much longer book than it is.
Beautiful, heartwarming story of friendship and love. I laughed. I cried. This is another wonderful story by author Toni Shiloh. I would love to see all stories by author Toni Shiloh turned into movies. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
#BookReview: AN UNLIKELY PROPOSAL by Toni Shiloh (Love Inspired)
About the Book: Their friendship can survive almost anything…
For two best friends,
marriage could be their greatest test yet…
Trinity Davis must not have heard firefighter Omar Young correctly. Did her handsome widowed best friend just suggest they get married? Omar needs a mom for his adorable little girls, and it’ll fix Trinity’s financial woes. But saying “I do” isn’t just business. Especially when the only vow they’re in danger of breaking is their promise to not fall in love…
👨👩👧👧 Have you read a book that got you so emotional? This is one of those books for me. I cried a good many times. It’s both a marriage of convenience and friends to lovers tropes. I also want to point out that the cover is beautiful. It speaks volumes of what a loving family looks like.
Omar and Trinity have been friends since he was seven years old. Faith and Joy are adorable. Trinity is amazing with them and like she said, they are easy to love despite all the drama they create. I love how this book promotes appreciation to all moms out there. It’s not easy but it can also be rewarding.
I like reading how Trinity and Omar struggle with their fears. Trinity was jilted at the altar and is afraid to love again. Omar’s fears of losing a loved one is so great that he is not willing to put his heart out there. I love each of their POV’s and how they continue to pray during their times of anxiety about their new situation. I would love to see Trinity in that red dress by the swing. This story has humor and a heart. I’d love to read a story about Jalissa and Rider. That will be fun!
Rock is like a second father to Omar. That moment at the hospital with him and Omar was a tear jerker. I love it. His wisdom and advice are on point. We all go through ups and downs in life but we just have to trust God to lead us through. We have to trust Him on how and when He answers our prayers. 5 stars
Thank you to the @justread and the author for the complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
4.5 Stars This is Toni Shiloh's first book with Love Inspired and she knocked it out of the park. This is a sweet "friends to more" marriage of convenience story with two precious little girls as side characters. I love that Shiloh is unapologetically Christian in her writings and enjoy the dialog that her characters have with the God who can help them on their lives' journeys. I look forward to reading more of Shiloh's novels in the future.
Wonderful, wonderful story! One of the best things about this novel was that it just felt so real. The likelihood of these two best friends marrying for the reasons they did were totally plausible. The way they began feeling a bit uncomfortable around each other as husband and wife was also realistic.
The awkward moments were balanced by good conversations that focused on their friendship. We, the readers, could see how Trinity and Omar were slowly developing deeper feelings for each other, but it took awhile for their hearts to open to that idea.
The way the two toddlers reacted to Trinity becoming their new mom was very realistic, as well. There were so many sweet moments tangled up with tantrums and difficulties.
Omar struggled to let go of certain parts of his life with his first wife. There were a couple of times where his immediate reaction was linked to the pain he felt at the memory of his wife fading from the girls’ lives. The author did such a good job of creating a man who was struggling with grief, yet also wanted to honor his new wife.
I loved this sweet story and also appreciated the beautiful epilogue at the end.
I am a fan of the friends to more romance trope, and in An Unlikely Proposal, Toni Shiloh ups the ante by combining that trope with a modern-day marriage of convenience one as well.
The reasoning and justification behind said marriage of convenience is believable and a good fit for the story. Trinity and Omar have grown up as best friends, but their dating/romance lives have taken separate paths. Now, circumstances have put them both in a place of needing assistance—Trinity for her health, and Omar for his daughters, and what better solution than marrying each other?
Omar’s toddlers provide a few laughs throughout the book, but they are also adorable and wrapped me around their little precocious fingers. An Unlikely Proposal reminds readers that sometimes when we make decisions to protect our hearts, God can make the results more beautiful than we could ever have imagined.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
An Unlikely Proposal combines two of my favourite tropes—marriage of convenience and best friends to more—and proves that marrying your best friend can become complicated when you’re not actually in love with each other! Then again, maybe it would have been less complicated if they hadn’t been so determined NOT to fall in love with each other! Because apart from being best friends, Omar and Trinity have each loved and lost in some form, so a big part of their journey was overcoming their fear of being hurt again.
As always, Shiloh weaves a strong faith thread through her story, and the addition of Omar’s two little girls ups the cute factor considerably and adds an element of unpredictability to Omar and Trinity’s new relationship status. I couldn’t help but sympathise with Trinity as she jumped headfirst into fulltime care of Omar’s girls—Trinity, I give YOU a head nod in solidarity! Battle ready!
A heart-warming contemporary romance full of family life and growing in faith and love.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
5 stars. This was a powerful story of love. I’m not crazy about the best friends to lovers trope but this is probably the best that I’ve read. I loved it that much.
Omar is a widow and the father of two toddlers. Trinity just recently lost her job and in turn, her health insurance. She’s a Type-1 Diabetic. Omar needs someone to help care for his girls, Trinity needs health insurance so he proposes marriage. Yep, we have a marriage of convenience here and I was all on board for it because that is my catnip.
I loved that they both went in with no feelings involved and would still just be friends. Omar is still grieving over his wife and Trinity has been left at the altar before so she’s not interested in love but God had different plans for both of them. Watching them develop feelings and then try to work through those feelings was absolutely beautiful. Omar especially really had to learn that loving Trinity was not a betrayal to his deceased wife or her memory. It was just so good. Both characters are incredibly likable and felt so real. They had great chemistry and their love story was so satisfying to read, especially when we get to the lovely epilogue.
I can’t say enough good things about this book. I will for sure be checking out more by this author because this left me with such a huge smile on my face by the time I was done.

What do you do when your best friend comes up with a solution to all your problems, but it’s really NOT what you were thinking? After all, who would have ever thought a marriage proposal would come out of Omar’s mouth! If you want to read a delightful story of two friends who have been friends for years and supported each other through many of life’s joys, and struggles, then this is the book for you. This is a beautifully touching story with rich word pictures. There were many times, I felt deep emotions as I was reading this book. I related to the feelings of doubt, low self-esteem, grief, fear of letting go and letting God lead. These are many feelings we all deal with from time to time. Toni Shiloh has a wonderful way of conveying the feelings of each of the characters in this book. She has just the right way to bring these characters to life. She really is a joy to read. I laughed, I cried, I stayed up WAY TOO LATE, just so I could get one more chapter read! Through it all there is a strong message of how God loves us and will be there for us, even when we feel afraid and unworthy. I highly recommend you read this book! I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been looking for some Christian fiction written by black authors that aren't drenched in billionaire romance or scandalous story lines, I think I have found that author in Toni Shiloh. I will be looking forward to reading more from her and see what other character emerge from her works.
In An Unlikely Proposal, its as if you took Fireproof and Loves Comes Softly and mesh them together.
I appreciated the diabetic character and some of the hurdles Trinity, our main character, had to face. In so far as the story line as a whole, if you are looking for contemporary romance, this may be a good choice to pick up next. Right up there with Denise Hunter, Shiloh's characters will banter, love, fight their true feelings, and look to God for guidance and strength in the difficulties of life. I can imagine a marriage of convenience with two small girls in the picture being one of them.
Great book by Toni Shiloh! I liked how it was a marriage of convenience story between best friends and how hard it was for them to open up to loving each other in a romantic way. I loved how Toni showed their struggle and them relying on the Lord for help. I liked the characters. I thought they were very relatable and I love the sweet little girls. Wonderful christian romance.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Toni Shiloh's An Unlikely Proposal hits all the right notes with a clean-reading romance. I loved the faith elements, swoon-worthy fireman hero Omar, and strong, smart heroine Trinity, who doesn't let anything stop her in life.
As I finished, I wanted there to be a sequel, I absolutely adored this novel. Another, Toni Shiloh must-read for fans of romance!
This is a friends to lovers and marriage of convenience romance. There is some drama, but it isn't over the top. I imagine it would be realistic. There is a happy ending. I expected there would be, but I didn't think it would be that.
