This guide offers a concise overview of the medicinal use of fungi. It’s a soup-to-nuts examination of how to utilize approximately thirty different mushrooms for treatment of a wide variety of ailments.
The book consists of eight chapters. Each of the first three chapters is quite brief and provides simple background information about mushrooms as medicine. The detailed information begins with chapter four, which provides an in-depth overview of fungi and the characteristics by which which some of them derive health and medicinal benefits. Chapters five and six repeat some of the same information, but from opposing angles – making it easier for the reader to find the information they are seeking. Chapter five describes the mushrooms, including a brief mention of the uses of each. Chapter six, on the other hand, introduces a range of ailments and medical conditions, and suggests which of the mushrooms have been studied as remedies. There are endnotes, directing one to the papers in which the scientific results appear. This is also where one finds information on dosages.
Chapter seven shows various approaches to preparing mushrooms for use as medicine. Not all of the mushrooms can be eaten, some require tinctures or other preparations to be made, and this chapter explains how to do that work in a step-by-step fashion. For the mushrooms that can be eaten, it describes the relative merits of different cooking methods. The last chapter discusses where to obtain mushrooms. It offers considerations for foraging mushrooms, but also tips for commercially acquiring them.
The book has many graphics. These include color photos of the various species of mushrooms as well as some drawings and diagrams throughout. The chapter on preparation has graphics interspersed within the textual directions to offer a visual indicator and break up the text. As mentioned, there is a huge set of paper references arranged as endnotes linked to the places (largely in chapter six) where findings are cited.
If one is wondering, the book does not discuss any mushrooms with psychoactive (psychedelic) properties (e.g. psilocybe.) Many of the mushrooms included will be well known to culinary mushroom users (e.g. button, portobello, enoki, lion’s mane, chicken-of-the-woods, shiitake, and oyster mushrooms.) Others were familiar to me [as someone with a minimal knowledge of mushrooms] even though it wasn’t from their culinary use (chaga, reishi, and jelly ear.) And a few of the fungi I was unfamiliar with before reading the book.
I found this to be a useful book. It’s concise and offers attractive and useful graphics. If you are interested in medicinal mushrooms, check it out.
I've been aware that mushrooms have many health benefits for a long time, but had not done much research on that aspect. Mostly, I've just tried to add some to my cooking and hoped for the best.
This book lays out lots of useful information, using color photos, graphics, and distilling a lot of technical reports into an understandable resource for the kitchen table herbalist.
I most appreciate that the author uses both the Latin binomial and the common names throughout the text. That's so important when working with mushrooms (and herbs)!
After an overview of the benefits and history of medicinal mushrooms, the author discusses a number of species, then offers a chapter on which ones are useful for specific ailments.
Since many of us have no experience making mushroom medicine, the chapter on how to do that is especially helpful.
Overall, a valuable reference, and I will dig into specific mushrooms and add one or two to my medicine cabinet.
Full disclosure - I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.
I was sent a copy as an early reviewer, as someone who has been studying native Arizona flora for several decades now, mycology is a great addition.
This book lays out the benefits of the mushrooms overall, as well as techniques for harvesting and use.
With the pictures and descriptions all put together in a good way it is a great handbook to assist individuals in their journey through the wonderful healthy world of mushrooms!
While it is not all inclusive, *outside of writing dozens of books this is not possible* it does outline the major and a few beneficial minor mushrooms and their uses, gathering techniques and more.
Thank you! I will be purchasing a hardback copy shortly as well, a truly beneficial addition to my growing inclusive library of plants/natural health in a safe way.
Research, materia medica and recipes for everyday use all in one place
My favorite aspect of this book is that it is full color and excellent for people who are visual learners. Even the recipes have visual pictorial instructions as well as words.
On my cookbook shelf, for years, has been Healing Spices by Dr. Aggarwal, a researcher at M.D. Anderson. This book is another that will be part cookbook part medicinal materia medica. As a practitioner of Chinese Herbal Medicine I have been familiar with herbs like cordyceps and reishi, but this text goes into dozens more.
If you are interested in protecting your health, preventing disease and learning more about medicinal mushrooms, this book is well worth it!!!
Other cultures have used mushrooms medicinally for centuries. If you have ever been interested in this subject or even interested in simply improving your health naturally, this is a very thorough guide.
It references the studies to support claims that link specific types of fungi to specific illnesses. This book makes it very easy to inform yourself fully or the charts and chapters are perfect to use the book for only the areas that relate to you. I don't think you could find a more complete or user friendly source for improving your health with fungi.
A handy layman's guide to medicinal mushrooms. A lot of repetition between sections because of the cross-references made, but this makes it easier to find the information you are looking for. You can search by mushroom name or by a particular condition/illness to be treated.
I have been a proponent for mushrooms for many years. This book really showed me what I had been missing. Defiantly going to be implementing several tips in this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
A thorough overview of popular mushroom species, their benefits, and health uses. An excellent starting point for anyone interested in medicinal mushrooms.
