#1 New York Times, #1 USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Helen Hardt's passion for the written word began with the books her mother read to her at bedtime. She wrote her first story at age six and hasn’t stopped since. In addition to being an award winning author of contemporary and historical romance and erotica, she’s a mother, an attorney, a black belt in Taekwondo, a grammar geek, an appreciator of fine red wine, and a lover of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. She writes from her home in Colorado, where she lives with her family.
Be still my heart... Be still... Gah! As always Helen Hardt manages to throw me into an all-consuming, beyond emotional, sexy suspenseful read.
Freed in book 18 of the Steel Brothers Saga and it's Dale and Ashley's last book and the author did not disappoint! Dale is still struggling with the demons from his past and Ashley is the only one that can help him get through it. Will he be able to overcome all that haunts him or will it ultimately cost him the love of his life? This was laced with emotional scenes, plot twists and mystery. I won't give much more away, but I will say that this was an emotional rollercoaster and would have to be some of Helen Hardt's best work.
Sadly, the story of Dale and Ashley ended up in disappointment for me. I used to like Miss Hardt soap opera drama in Steel Brothers legacy. The first generation is wonderful.
In Freed, Dale is drama king. The whole 3 books, he keeps up with feeling sorry for himself and lying to Ashley. I can not stand him. While Ashley is a pushy heroine. Self center and bitchy. I guess Dale and Ashley deserves each other.
This lady puts you through the emotional wringer. Not for the faint of heart. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s tough to read a story where someone is so completely disgusted with themselves that they can barely function. They are physically hard-working, brilliant, and focused. But emotionally they are a wreck.
This describes Dale completely. In Freed, the author has thrown so many emotional ups and downs into the story that it actually has a very dark edge. She finally gives up the deepest darkest secret that Dale holds about his past. It is graphic and not for the faint of heart.
This is definitely not a story for you if you are sensitive to harsh topics involving children. It was hard to read that part but yet it gives us so much insight into Dale’s emotional being and actions.
But Hardt does bring some light into the story to help balance everything. She is a gifted author that will tie you up in knots, tears running, but then let you down easily with an ending which gives you hope for the future and leads you into the next installment.
Freed is one you will never forget as Hardt this story with deep, emotional visuals; the intensity of their connection, their all consuming passion, and depth of love.
Heat level – high, depth of love – high, sigh factor level – high!
Freed by Helen Hardt is book 18 in the Steel Brothers Saga. This is the story of Ashley White and Dale Steel. I have been reading in and out of the series so I have been able to make some of the books standalone but I do wish I had read them in order to fully enjoy this series. Dale is struggling with his past that is coming full force into his present. Ashley has her own story of upset but the two together seem to help each other. This was a very moving that kept me turning the pages. I do recommend this book and of course this author's writing.
I absolutely loved this series up until Dales books. I just don’t understand why the story was stretched over three books - NOTHING HAPPENED! It just went round and round in circles about the same thing. Can I love her, can I not. That would have been okay if there was something more to the story like in previous books. I’m sorely disappointed and can’t say I’m even looking forward to reading the next one.
I am so happy Dale got his third book and his HEA! This is book eighteen in this series.... wow...book eighteen!! Helen Hardt has captured our hearts and has kept us completely hooked on the Steel Family and all the good and bad for so long! It really is amazing how we are reading the next generation of the Steels and are still biting our nails wondering what will come next!
Dale and Ashley have been through alot in their short but intense romance. When Cherished ended Ashley was in search of her love and wishing for him to return from his solitude in the woods. All the Steels, especially Jade and Talon, have said not to push but to be there for him when he needs her. So that is what she is doing, waiting and hoping Dale will return with as much love for her as he left with. Dale needs to do what Dale does best, retreat and hide in order to heal. He is not trying to intentionally hurt Ashely but rather trying to be whole and the best he can be for her. While on his solo trip in the mountains, the forest fires have grown and now the Steel Ranch is in jeopardy. Dale must make it home in order to save his vines and to ensure Ashley is still his. The outcome of the fires is intense and heartbreaking and yet again tests Dale's inner strength as a man.
There are so many ups and downs in this one I was wondering IF we even were going to get the happy ending we wanted. So much angst and so many times you just want to step in front of Dale and just say NO! Ashley is legit one of the most patient and strong heroines we have seen in this series. She just does not give up. There are so many sweet and forever moments and many more times a twist brings it all the an abrupt halt. Helen certainly made us work for this couple and this happy ending. And then of course there will be more! With the Steels there just may always be more.
I am looking for Donny's story next very much. Helen did a great just as usual but there were times I thought there may be more to the questions that have been lingering. All and all though it was another successful addition to the Steel Brother's Saga!
Take a deep breath before you plunge into this masterpiece because once you start, you will not be able to stop! Freed is book 18 in the Steel Brothers Saga by Helen Hardt. As always with any series, reading it in order is recommended, with Freed I do think the author gives enough back story that you won’t be lost if you read it as a standalone, but that being said, you’ll want to go back and read it in order.
The entirety of The Steel Sage is fantastic, and that continues with Dale and Ashley’s adventure into the unknown. Dale has demons, ones that he struggles with from his past, Ashley has her own battle scars from her childhood, but doesn’t let it control her life now. Two people that you wouldn’t think would need each other end of being their own saving Grace.
Without spoiling all the goodness to come from this read, be prepared to want to scream every five seconds as well. The book is so well written, the emotion, the feeling, the pain and twists of the plot will suck any reader under. For parts of Freed, Dale was dangling off a cliff, and even with the shoty things he said and did to Ashley, she was the only one to talk him down from that edge. There were times, even as I read it, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next!
Five star review from me, Freed is tantalizing read that is sure to keep its’s readers on their toes, and better yet, coming back for more.
With the demons from his past coming back to the for front the last thing Dale Steel ever thought would happen was to find the woman who he can actually fall in love with. But when the relationship moves from simple sparks to a combustible flame, will Ashley be strong enough to push through the baggage that surrounds him and could possibly destroy him? With so much pulling them apart including Dale's self doubt, can they find the path to overcoming it all? Or will the spark die out and leave them both devastated? With high emotions and a storyline that was hard to read but was in no way ever being put down, this was another fabulous read in the Steel Saga. The reader would think that the story would run flat and not be as wonderful as the beginning of the series but Helen Hardt has a distinct way of pulling the reader into the family and not letting go. 5 Stars are not enough.
Only by facing your demons can you stop them from having power over you...
Freed is an emotional and powerful story. It is so moving to read about Dale's struggles with the shackles holding him to his horrific past. The one person that anchors him and keeps him afloat, is Ashley. The love they have for each other is the one thing that will give them a future together.
Dale is holding on by a thread as more anguish and pain is thrust upon him. I felt his torment and misery through the pages of this story. This was definitely a tear jerker, so be prepared and have tissues on hand. Helen Hardt as always is a phenomenal story teller, and I feel this is her finest to date.
Helen knocked this story out of the ballpark! There are so many emotions brought out in this story. So much intensity in this couples life. I could not get enough. I highly recommend this story to others. I could not put it down.
I had to wait for months for this book, this is the 18th book in the Steel Brothers Saga. Let me till you it was worth the wait. Helen Hardt is amazing author and now I have to wait till the end September to get the next one.
FREED is gut wrenching. My heart cries for the torture Dale and Donny's little bodies endured. Dale at only 10 years old had his youth snatched away by these monstrous pedophiles. The details of the pain Dale and Donny suffered is burned in my brain and I haven't been able to shake it off. The abduction happened 25 years ago, and it appears that Donny has learned to live with it, but Dale has not. From reading the other books we know what was done to them but this book, especially at the end, to my horror, is graphic. You cry for Dale who hid a secret that has slowly eaten at his soul and made him an emotional recluse. Dale believed that Ashley and his family would hate him if his secret was revealed so he kept it hidden deep inside where it became a toxic sludge of emotion.
This book is named FREED because Dale is finally facing his demons instead of hiding them. He has decided to take the road least traveled that will lead him into the arms of Ashley and give him the freedom to feel without fear. His first steps to freedom are so scary I didn't realize I was holding my breath until I could see that he was going to survive the pain of opening-up. Believe me, there is a happy ending but the journey to the HEA is a long tortuous one that you will love to hate.
The entire book wasn't all stressful. There were some great scenes at Tiffany's and Las Vegas that are wonderful. Of course, the romance is passionate. Ashley is the perfect match for Dale. Sometimes I compared her loyalty with Dale to a dog with his master. But you realize fairly early in the book that she will do anything to have him....and she does.
I want to say my piece about Bradford Steel who is mentioned several times. I read Brad and Daphne's story and it was a very sad story. No matter what Brad did to protect Daphne, he failed. No matter how hard he tried, how many people he paid off or how many lies and truths he told, in the end Wendy won. Even though I know from Talons story the full extent of Brad's failure and am saddened by the bad decisions he made I am going to give him credit for trying to do the right thing. All he wanted was a life with Daphne who he loved above all things. I think that even though Wendy was the catalyst who caused the insanity that instigated the madness, that Bradford was a little crazy himself. How could he not be? Wendy took so much away from him. Do you remember Brads best friend in college who mysteriously died at his wedding (I think). Is it coincidental that Willow's young husband suddenly had a heart attack at a wedding celebration and later died? When you read the book and realize the characters in attendance at this reception, you may wonder too if the ghost of Wendy is still haunting this family.
Well, before starting this book take in a deep breath, get a glass or bottle of your favorite wine and a box of tissue and enjoy one of the best set of books Helen has written since Talon and Jades.

Helen has managed to ravish my heart, filled with so much passion from her writing alone. How she’s able to make the reader connect with each of these characters, experiencing every emotion possible, is beyond amazing. Also, so many unanswered questions were brought to an end, finally understanding why.
I want more. I want to be ravaged by this virile mountain man—this rugged, feral animal. -Ashley
Ashley is such a strong person, especially with her upbringing, and she is so good for Dale. Her ability to bring light into his world of darkness, and manages to become a permanent fixture in all of our hearts. She is such a joyous and free-spirited person, always searching for the best in others. You can’t help but to respect her determination to succeed and her ability to never give up on those she loves.
If I bury myself deep enough, can I slay my demons? -Dale
Dale is such a broken soul, tormenting himself for things out of his control. His character is filled with disgust for himself, and that alone is difficult to portray to readers but Helen does an astounding job of making the readers feel. He’s an emotional wreck, yet brilliant and hardworking through everything. We were finally able to find out what his secret was, and it would break anyone.
She’s all light where I’m all dark.
The connection and chemistry between these two is off the charts. But, we’re also introduced more in depth to Ashley’s mom and her significant other in this book. Helen’s character development is exceptional, leaving no room for questions or thoughts. And even with Dale and Ashley finally getting their happy ending, Helen had to leave us with yet another cliffhanger 🤦🏽♀️.
Helen Hardt is one amazing author that always has you coming back for more... more mystery, more feelings, more heartbreak... and obviously more frustration. LOL Freed is the 3rd book of Dale and Ashley, but way further in the Steel series. (I can't remember right off the top of my head. Sorry)
This book had my blood boiling. I wanted to SCREAM at Ashley and Dale numerous times. I felt horrible for the way that Ashley was feeling, knowing or at least having an idea what the future may hold all based on what colors she saw. The writing was amazing as usual for Ms. Hardt, but the feelings that were described were so on point it was hard not to want to "FIX" what they were obviously doing wrong. Which in turn leads to the frustration that only Ms. Hardt can make me feel and I have three teenage daughters!
I was extremely glad that the older Steel brothers stepped in on this one. However, that cliffhanger has me beating my head against the wall cause I knew it was coming. She always does this to us. I'm going to go on a limb and assume it will have something to do with a new mystery that presented itself. The more I think about the Steel series, the more I'm relating it to Yellowstone. Just due to the "issues" that they seem to fall into time and time again.
Dale Steel has so many demons in his mind, it has taken over his entire life. Only Ashley White has been able to bring any other emotion out.
The love they share is palpable. While in Las Vegas for her mothers impromptu wedding, Ashley gets surprised with a marriage proposal of her own. Does she say yes?
Dale is still faced with ALL his demons, even more so when they finally break through, and he remembers everything. He then faces the fact that he is the possible reason for the fire and loss of half the vineyard and his beloved Syrah crop.
All these thoughts finally break through. He feels he is unworthy of love from anyone...his family, and especially from Ashley.
But love, true love will conquer all. If you are willing to open up, give your everything to the one you love, it will work out.
This book had me all in my feels. I bet I went through a full box of tissues while reading. You will too.
As always, Helen Hardt and her amazing craft of writing, is phenomenal. I just cannot get enough. I'm already anxiously awaiting the next installment in this amazing series.
Freed is book 18 in The Steel Brothers Saga, and this series MUST be read in order, starting with Craving, book 1.
I can only rate this book with 5 stars however, it deserves 5000.
Ashley Votive Candle inadvertently started the forest 🔥🔥🔥
Dale thinks that he accidentally started the the forest fire that burned his Syrah Vines. He didn't! I think it was Ashley was she went there to be closer to him when he went up the mountain into the woods. That's my conclusion!!! This last story in Dale and Ashley last Saga, was at times so very hard to read. I sometimes felt like I was in a theater watching a suspense movie. Poor Dale and Donny, what their no good father put them through. Whenever he had flashbacks of the torture and hell he endured to save his little brother from the same fate made me cry 😢. So much hurt and pain😭. I'm so glad that Ashley was there to see him through it all. And thanks to his Dad Talon Steel, what a rock he is!!! This was such an emotionally charged read. And the tragedy that befalls Ashley's mother Willow husband Dennis. That was a total shocker!!! He was so young. I think he was poisoned the same way Brendan Murphy's uncle did at the Steel Brothers father 's wedding to their mother so many years ago. I think something evil this way comes. And it's going to continue with the next generation of Steel children saga.😲😦😳😯😮😵
The continuation of Ashley and Dales story is heart-wrenching. Although there were a couple of times I still wanted to smack Dale up-side his head, finding out more of his story broke my heart for the boy he was.
At the beginning, Dale has gone to the mountains… to get away, to de-escalate.. being in love with Ashley has made him feel, and feeling has brought on memories that he buried deep many years ago. On his second day, he smells smoke and realizes there’s a fire and it’s close to his grapevines… and Ashley.. so he heads back. He suffers a loss that, for him, is devastating, and because of that he makes a decision that he later tries to undo…. And he may succeed.
This is excellent, no surprise since it’s a Helen Hardt book. This series is a favorite for me, and I love reading about this family. The Steels certainly live interesting lives… even if it is in the mind of the writer. Do I recommend this book? Absolutely! Just as I have recommended all of the prior Steel brothers books. It’s excellent reading.
You know it's a great book when you are emotionally invested with the characters and story. That's how it was for me with this book I cried actual tears in spots and I loved this book.
First let me start by saying I love this series it is my favorite and Helen is a fantastic writer. The steel brothers series definatly doesnt disappoint and this book is now one of my favorites in the entire series.
This is about the next generation of Steels specifically Dale. His story is full of twists and turns and everything in between. Heart breaking at times and heart warming at times. You wont be disappointed in this one at all. You will fall in love with Dale and Ashley (as if you couldn't fall in love with any of the members the Steel family).
I love that this book takes us on a roller coaster of emotions and then seems to tie Ashley and Dale's story into a nice "bow" and still has the ending they both deserve.
I cant wait to see what the future holds for this series. I hope we can still hear about Dale and Ashley.
This is the eighteenth book in the Steel Brothers Saga and it is one riveting read from beginning to end. It is not a standalone and books sixteen and seventeen must be read before this one. However, I recommend reading this series from the beginning. Ms. Hardt has once again shown her writing chops as she continues Dale and Ashley’s story. Each one has had a challenging past in his/her own right. Dale is coming to grips with some realizations while struggling with whether or not he can let Ashley in. Ashley wants nothing more than to create a life with Dale but as he is keeping a tight rein on his emotions, how much is Ashley willing to put up with? There are so many nuances with this storyline that the author articulates beautifully giving readers a myriad of emotions that they have to work through as they turn the pages and get the full story. This is another winner and if more than five stars could be given, then this book would surely qualify and then some. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this incomparable series.
I looooooved it! My emotions were all over the place. This book sucked me into the pages and spit me out when it was done! Dale struggles with new revelations about his younger life and how things happened for him and his younger brother....leaving him more messed up and questioning everything about his life and worth. Ashley is always there to support him as are his parents, but he doesn't want it....he's not worthy. But he couldn't be further from the truth. He knows he only wants Ashley, she is his...and only his, but he can't keep the dark thoughts from his head. They threaten to consume him...to eat him alive....to make him feel unworthy of love because of what he did...what he allowed to happen..because he couldn't save himself or his brother. He deserves nothing good, and yet, Ashley is always there for him...because she loves him..and he wonders why? Helen has written another amazing book in this amazing, amazing series! All the feels...joy, fun, sadness, destruction, love, passion....it's all there!
Can someone broken be fixed and live on love alone
I have been reading this saga from day 1 This has been a fantastic journey not one book has ever disappointed me even taking the journey back a generation. I thank Helen for continuing the next generation of "Steels". As the story of Dale is told we get to know more cousins and new friends. We learn more of what Dale experienced as a child and where his demons that have possessed him into his adult life stem from...... Can't wait till 19 comes.out to.see what happens Helen has created a family with many emotions love anguish trauma deceit possession even lust. Strong women Characters that know how to work through all obstacles with their men to keep the family strong. This is also a very hot series when they have their sexual encounters. No.good series would be great without cliffhangers. So get.ready to catch up because the next one out in September. I believe you can get book1 Craving for free in Amazon Happy Reading.
Freed continues Dale and Ashely's story when sparks fly.
Dale is torn between his feelings for Ashley and the demons that he has within himself.
Ashely loves Dale and only wants to be with him, support him and show him that love can destroy the walls that Dale has erected.
There are so many facets to Dale and Ashley's relationship that is tested throughout this amazing story. Dale has learned something from his birth father that he now holds a secret and close to his chest. Hiding from his past threatens his future and the love he is developing for Ashley. Ashley navigates finding love at a time in her life that was most unexpected. Ashley's synesthesia is tested when emotions are raw and the colors foreshadow what is to come.
Fires in the vineyard, weddings in Las Vegas, a death in the family, and an all-encompassing love all lead the reader to love Dale and Ashley's twisted and emotional story.
As Ashley and Dale becomes closer, Dale is trying to fight old demons. He struggles with whether or not to let Ashley in. Opinion This is book 18 in the series. At a minimum, you need to read 16 and 17 first as these three books tell Dale and Ashley’s story. I highly recommend you start from book 1, Craving, which can often be found free in Kindle version. The fact that I am still reading the series at book 18 should speak wonders. Helen Hardt is truly a master of telling dark stories. These books are not your average romance reads. They will, however, grab you and hold on until you e read them all. This book in particular has more emotion than the others. Dale’s struggle is so extreme that the reader is left wondering what will happen at the end. Without giving too much away, know that Ms. Hardt does not disappoint with this book. Many thanks to Bare Naked Words for providing me with an ARC of this book.
This is the next installment of the Steel brothers saga. I keep thinking that the storyline is finished only to read that it really isn't. Helen Hardt takes us back to Dale Steel and his struggle. He's haunted and although we think we know the reason, we really don't. Dale Steel does not think he is worthy of love. He loves Ashley but feels that love is not forever and that their time together will be short. We really get to understand his psyche and examine his fear. Ashley is the woman who loves him. His struggle is her struggle too. She wants to build a life with him but he won't open up. We see Ashley's strength but the love she has for Dale is palpable. Just when I think Dale's story is over, Helen Hardt reels me in again and now I must wait for the next book in the series! Read this series. It's a page turner. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. I will be anxiously waiting the next book in the series.
The next book in the Steel Brothers Saga is Freed. Helen has now moved on to the Next Generation in the Steel Family. We first met Dale way back and now he is grown about to take over the Vineyard from his Uncle Ryan. Along comes an intern that he didn't feel was needed, Ashley White. There is an immediate connection even when Dale keeps his emotions in check as to limit his connections. He doesn't do relationships but there is something about Ashley that just calls to him.
This was a wonderful conclusion to Dale and Ashley's story. Showing how all things in life can be overcome if you truly want it bad enough.
Helen Hardt is a masterful genius with this series and how she weaves the characters and leaves you bits and pieces to later digest. Cannot wait for the next installment in this series.
Wow, just wow! I can’t even put into words how amazing this book was. We met Dale as a young boy when Talon rescued him. I fell in love with him and Ashley in the last book and this book did not disappoint. It was an emotional rollercoaster to read and I shed some tears reading. (Have tissues ready, you are going to need them.) Helen truly makes you feel like you are living it with the characters.
You learn more about Dale’s past before he was adopted by Jade and Talon and also demons from the present that haunt him.
Ashley is the only one who can save him as he is madly in love with her but will their love be enough for him to overcome his demons? In order to find out you’ll have to read this AMAZING Helen Hardt book which is the latest book in the Steel Brothers Saga.
Helen does it again. Now I’m going to put a space so don’t read unless you’ve read all of the series.
In this part of the story dale confronts his demons but also let’s them rest as he finds love and grabs on with both hands and jumps feet first into the life he never thought he could have. Ashley also faces her own set of demons and tries to be the one thing dale needs. Now in this portion we know kinda what dale and Donny went thru but we get actually details of what happened to dale and why he is still beating himself up. He feels as if that he had something to do with donnys abuse and talon is there to comfort dale and even shares his past with dale. I can’t wait for more and I’m very glad that I was given the opportunity to be one of the first people to read this. Thank you helen hardt and hardt and soul for the wonderful group and works of the written word
