Emily has spent her entire life alone. The solitude has never bothered her, in fact she likes the independence that comes with it. Little does she know, her solitude is about to come to a screeching halt. When her past and present collide, Emily finds herself in a world she barely understands, surrounded by beings she didn't know existed. With her best friend and a mysterious stranger by her side, Emily has to learn how to survive in this world. When she learns of a terrible prophecy, Emily has to face the possibility that she isn't meant to survive this. Despite what the prophecy says, Emily is the consummate survivor, and she won't go down without a fight. **The Breaking is a mature paranormal romance. It contains foul language and sexual scenes. This is book one of three in a series.
It had potential, but the constant inner monologue and horrendous grammatical errors made me stop reading by chapter 6. When the wrong “you’re,” “wondering” versus “wandering,” and “aloud” instead of “allowed” were used in the space on a paragraph, I couldn’t handle anymore.
Ok, so this book was a freebie, the author tried hard. It was probably a very hard work to put it together and there is a definite potential. One thing that really makes you want to give up early is the really bad proofreading - "your" instead of "you are" can actually make lose your mind. I marked several of those in the book before I just gave up and tried to skim over it. So I'd give a quick round down of the story. We have a girl that has been in foster care since she was 3, she was abused until she ran out of the last foster parents at 14, the father broke her cheek. So she has been running for the past 6 years. She deals in prescription drugs so she runs from the police, she runs from the other drug dealers and she runs from two supernatural forces, something she suspects but is not sure. She has one friend that forges her papers every two months so she can move away. She gets spooked and tries to run only to get snatched by someone. She wakes up in a mansion with this beautiful man she feels a strong physical connection. She learns a ton of stuff and a lot gets hidden from her, she gets abducted, terribly abused until she manages to cleverly get herself freed. I thought about reading the second book, I liked the complication about choosing between two mates.
I wanted to like the book--I really enjoyed the main character's perspective. I did not like that the book was mostly based on "let's protect her from knowing anything, for her sake" and like many romance books, a lot of issues could have been resolved with the main characters being honest with each other.
There is a section in this book at the end *Spoiler* that was a very weird transition from current time period of the book to a vision and back. It was confusing and rushed in explanation that made the impact of the vision hard to even care about (in the grand scheme of the book) when I was lost trying to figure out what just happened.

DNF at 40%, and by that last bit I was skimming so much I don't even really think it counts. The book had a lot of potential, but all the errors (typos, spelling, grammar, etc.) made it impossible to read. Also, the insta-love was more cringe inducing than romantic. Even though I picked up the book when it was free, I couldn't force myself to finish it.
