Poppy dreams of making a business out of her amazing pastry skills, but she can't seem to muster up the money or the confidence to follow these dreams, while working for a restaurant she hates. In an unexpected positive twist though, she manages to attend an exclusive bake-off event happening in the heart of the small town of Plumsville. Poppy can barely control her enthusiasm as she will finally witness her idol of a chef, Galvin Sandy, cooking in the competition. While she is having the time of her life with her friend Arnold at the event, something horrifying occurs: one of the judges suddenly drops dead after being poisoned by Galvin's food.
Everyone is utterly shocked and the police believe Galvin is the murderer, but Poppy is certain that her role model can't have such a malevolent heart. Poppy and Arnold decide to take justice in their own hands and further investigate the judge's death in an agonizing effort to expose the real murderer. Things start not looking good for Galvin, as more evidence builds up against him, but Poppy is determined to shine light upon the hidden truth regardless of how dangerous or challenging this may prove. Just how prepared will she be though for putting herself into highly risky situations in order to prove her idol's innocence?
Along with the pressure to help her hero, Poppy is forced to face off with her horrid ex, as well as her demeaning manager. She will have to swim through endless waves of confusing suspicion, worrying self-doubt and threatening presences to reach her end-goal.Will Poppy be able to summon the courage to seek out her life goals and free the man she's looked up to like a father? Or will the real murderer manage to escape and incriminate someone innocent as a scapegoat?
"A Deadly Bake-off" is an intriguing cozy mystery novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cliffhangers, just pure captivating mystery.

Remarkable job Cynthia, thanks for sharing the little gem with us.
She ends up at a baking contest to watch the person she admires the most cook in a cook off contest. Thing is she wants to start her own business but for several reasons can't get it started. Her idol ends up accused of murdering one of the judges and things continue to stack up against him. Her and the friend she is there with decide to investigate. But along comes her ex and her manager where she works starting trouble with her of their own. What a whirlwind of trouble. There is suspense, danger, surprises, suspense and so much more. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
This one will keep her jumping. I love a good cozy and Ms. Raye has delivered with this one. In this one, you will find suspense, danger, and so awesome twists. I loved the characters Poppy was fun. Who murdered one of the judges? It can’t be her favorite baker or could it? Dealing with some unpleasant people along with a murder will keep her jumping. This was an entertaining piece but I will be honest there were a few parts that I did not care for but that is personal biases. I enjoyed the book. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
This book caught me up in the story from the beginning. However, I was unable to read beyond the beginning of chapter 2. It seems to me that someone who claims to be an author should have a vocabulary that would be large enough that using God's name in vain would not be necessary. In addition, the subtle insinuations to inappropriate thoughts and actions are offensive. I won't be reading this author again.
I liked the writing, but the characters were a bit immature for me. The mystery was interesting, but again the culprit was too immature and the result was too simple. The addition of the extended epilogue was fun and satisfying. I would read another by this writer and hope the characters might be a bit stronger.
Poppy is in a dead end job making pizzas, even though she trained at cookery school, and has her certificate. She and her friend, Arnold, witnessed a murder and set out to solve it. The characters were well constructed and intriguingly believable. Most were friendly, but Debbie, the owner of the restaurant, is nasty and vindictive.
OMG! This story got me glued for start to finish! I love the progression and the character development. I most especially admired Poppy’s heart. Yo actually have that kind of attitude...especially at the end...that was so admirable.
I could not read this book. Almost immediately, there were multiple, nasty, homosexual jokes about what they wanted to eat — and it wasn’t food. Ugh. Not funny and not appropriate to a cozy mystery.
This book was a fun read, a mystery filled with action and intrigue. The characters were likeable , and the plot was good. I highly recommend this book to other cozy mystery readers.
Cynthia Raye has given us a mystery, a romance (really read the extended epilogue), great characters (good and bad) and humor. I love the relationship between Poppy and Arnold. I enjoyed this book.
I wasn't able to finish the story and I won't give any author lower than a 3. If it's below that it belongs between me and the author. There were just some things that were offensive IMO. I will go back and finish reading the story at some future date.
