A geologist who has sworn off relationships.
An archaeologist with a chip on his shoulder.
A 9.0 that throws them together.

Anders is sent by the University of Alaska to determine whether an abandoned gold mine is still active. Thankful for the opportunity to escape a dying relationship, he packs up everything important to him and disappears deep into the wilds of Alaska. The solitude and serenity are exactly what he needs right now.

Ujaruk has spent a lifetime overcoming societal prejudices and misperceptions about his Aleutian heritage. When his job as an archeologist sends him to work on an abandoned mine project, taking him back to the home he left long ago, he realizes it’s time to make peace with his roots.

Thrown together by work, and proximity in the beauty and isolation of the Denali National Park, Anders and Ujaruk form an unexpected connection, but is it just a bond of convenience, or can it be more? When man and nature collide, will their new relationship stand the test?

Will they find gold? Will they find love?
Will they both come out of this alive?

And will there be Aftershocks?

DNF @ 31%

So two guys trapped, as in under something, in a cave after an earthquake. And all you bring is rope? Don't y'all have a first aid kit?

And "the man I love" line was a bit much. They've known each other a handful of days, if that much, and they both have trust issues. But a couple of shared kisses and a hand job equals "I love him"? Uh-huh.

This was going to be a status update, but then I read a couple more pages, and just decided to trust all the two-star reviews and cut my losses here. It's not bad, but it really needs fleshing out and better story and character development. This is two short stories put together into one book, and I didn't even finish the first one. I did like this author's Dare to Live, but this one is just too rushed and simplistic. I can't buy these guys as grown men, much less a geologist and whatever the other one is supposed to be. They act like they've never been in the field before. Because who decides to go checking out a mine when there are so many active tremors happening every day, multiple times a day?

This book was just not good. The first chapter had promise, and I really liked the setting and the only one tent. But then things just got really rushed - they said they wanted to wait, and there was no tension but they didn’t wait to kiss, and there was a mine and an earthquake and then it was “I love you forever”, but this was only the first 30% of the book. The remaining 70% was fairly boring and low stakes slice of life stuff that didn’t get developed enough to be interesting. Overall it just wasn’t enjoyable to read, there were a ton of plot holes, and I didn’t really feel the relationship chemistry. Wouldn’t recommend.

I didn’t care much for this story. It was pretty boring and I would have DNF if it wasn’t so short.

I don’t think I like these characters very much. The pacing of the novel is strange and feels off, the characters are quite flat, and I doubt that I’ll read anything else from this author.

3.5 stars: Angst

Carter's major characters both have worries and insecurities rolling off them, fortunately not at the same time in this work set in Fairbanks. With the field of geology and the Alaskan mileau, at least it had my interest. A bit more happiness is suggested.

It started off promising but then it just seemed to get really difficult. It ended very abruptly.

It started good and I liked it. Til after Anders gets out of the hospital after breaking his leg. After that the story seemed to just drag on for a good while. Then the end seemed...kind of rushed, kind of unfinished.
