What started as a joyous reunion of friends, soon became one of the most challenging periods of their lives. Chosen as scouts for the Kuccuntikka village of the Shoshone for their trek to the grand encampment of the Shoshone, their encounter with the scouts from the Tukkutikka band would set them on a different course altogether. When Gabe meets the war leader of the other band, he is challenged at every turn by the woman warrior, his equal on every count. But when they are attacked by Blackfoot, a battle rages…
When a raiding party of Hidatsa warriors strike another band of Shoshone, an old friend, the war leader of the Agaideka Shoshone, asks Gabe and Ezra to join in the vengeance party to rescue the five captive girls, one of whom is his niece known as Sacajawea. But raiding Blackfoot and Hidatsa war parties were not the only challenges for the two explorers. When a jealous Shoshone warrior tries to take the place of the woman warrior war leader and seeks vengeance, the fight rages with both the war leader known as Cougar Woman and her new mate, Spirit Bear – also known as Gabe Stonecroft.

Bob Rundell – Stonecroft Sagas Bk 8 – Shoshone Summer – Reviewed 8/13/20 – Read 8/12/20
The affairs of the heart can sure tangle you up if you are not careful, especially if she is almost your equal!!!
Wolf and Gabe Stone have returned from Saint Louis and are settling in again with his friend Ezra and his wife, Dove. He was so happy to be out of the big city and among friends again. Especially now that Ezra and Dove have a new baby. It is almost mid-summer and time for the Grand Encampment. Every year all the Shoshone gather to trade and reunite with old friends and family. The three talk it over and decide to go, but Gabe wanted to know if they would have to travel with the village. He explained that every woman there would be trying to get him hitched. They decided to do the scouting of the trail and to leave the next morning. They could leave clear trail signs and possibly leave them meat along the way.
After waking, Wolf and Gabe headed up the mountain so that Gabe could spend his time with his Father, which was his habit every morning. It was so peaceful watching the sky light up the world with its beautiful colors. Suddenly Wolf nudged him and started whimpering, knowing his friend so well, he knew it could only mean trouble. Taking off at a trot, the two made it back to their cabin as Ezra stepped out. Gabe told him to grab the rifles and follow them, Wolf took off again, with Gabe right behind him. As they topped the ridge, Gabe saw the problem! Wolves!!!!
And now the story begins…
What did I like? I have gone to numerous meetups that the Native Americans hold, and it is a wonderful adventure. So many dances, lots of food, everything from feathers to blankets and so much more. I love the friendship that Gabe, Ezra, and Dove have with Wolf. That of course, is not one of my past pleasures, having a wolf. Although I have had several dogs that would look out after me. I even had one that would not let my daughter get even close to the water’s edge. I thought it was awesome, she did not!!!! The most spectacular thing I love about Bob’s books is his knowledge of the places that Gabe and Ezra visit. I have traveled extensively during my lifetime, and my love for nature is one that I photograph all the time. Bob’s descriptions bring to my mind’s eye the wonderous sights.
What will you like? Here is another incredible chapter in the Stonecroft Sagas. The exciting action will grab you in the beginning and will not let go till the final page turns. The characters are the best though when you see them with their unique hairstyles, clothing, and weapons. The breathtaking landscape will come alive for you, taking you from the glorious sunrises to the beauty of the sunsets. Mountains, valleys, trees, and lakes will shine in your mind as they travel to the meetup. Bob’s books are one of the most descriptive and detailed, I have ever read. Not to say that others are not, but he wakes the mind and eyes up to the wondrous gift that we have received in our surroundings. Be prepared for an incredible read that will capture your heart! It goes without saying, another wonderful book for your Western Library!

Another good book. My only complaint might be is that it was a travelogue as well as a novel. I am sure that the mountains, valleys and rivers were all beautiful, and that the eruptions at Yellowstone were something to behold (and smell), but at times, the descriptions seemed excessive.
This sequence of books continues to be consistently excellent. There is no "rise or fall" in quality or readability. There are a couple of noticeable errors in this book but not enough to worry about. Have already purchased no. 9.
Gabe finds his match as he defends against attackers. Just because someone is bigger does not make them better. Often, it makes them a bully. The meet a woman war leader and are amazed. Highly recommended for all readers.
The Stonecroft saga continues with Gabe and Ezra Heading to a gathering of this tribes. On the way they meet Cougar Woman war leader of a band of the Shoshone. And Gabe soon is smitten with the woman warrior.
As always, this was a wonderful story with all the ingredients necessary for producing a great western and/it mountain man book. There are battles, travels, horses and last but not least romances.
A new member to the party, a settled scored, some more explored country. I'm genuinely looking forward to what the next installment of the Stone croft saga will bring.
Loved the story . Always the next bit of excitement around the corner. New love connections. New drama with other Indian tribes. Big fight scenes. Can’t wait for the next adventure
i enjoyed this epic tale of adventure, these chaps do more in a year than most folk do in a lifetime! They are always so laid back and brave. I have holidayed in the area covered by these stories so it is all far more real to me as I know the countryside covered by these stories. I can recommend this book, one of a series, as a really good read.
Amazing Historically Accurate Early Frontier Lifestyle and Survival Soon after beginning Rundell's early frontier tales of two childhood friends transitioning into experienced mountain men, readers can almost smell the beautiful outdoors, campfires and unwashed divisions and bodies! With survival as the constant focus, all characters portray real life, and death, on the early frontier.
The ongoing saga of friends Gabe and Ezra's intent to explore the far western territory continues with Gabe finding a warrior wife. The thing that makes these books interesting is the description of the lands and peoples they come into contact with.
