This series is just the absolute best. I can't take how much I love these characters, their development, their journeys, everything. The Valentine's Day chapters were adorable and heartwarming, obviously a romance manga needs to pull out all the stops visually and Akasaka didn't disappoint. And of course any chapter dealing with Miyuki's dad is comedy gold.
I love seeing Tsubame taking action to clear Ishigami's name, and seeing how many people are willing to help her. I'm curious to see where this subplot goes and how the school will respond to it.
This continues to be my favorite romance series and probably will hold that title for all of eternity.
Love Is War is such a comfort series - I must strive to finally finish it in between my other reads. It has some great characters that you really grow to care for, the side characters just as much as the main! My favourite character, Ai Hayasaka, is now a fellow student instead of one of the main characters, Kaguya’s, personal assistant. She was great as the assistant, but this means she features a bit more! The Valentine’s Day chapter where they give out the chocolates is so wholesome and sweet! 🥰🥺
This volume was a lot of fun, less Yu's storyline, which I can take or leave. It seems to be close to a resolution, so that's good.
My favorite episode was the one where Miyuki and Kaguya each have misconceptions about what the other one's thinking, and act on those misconceptions, which has the effect of exacerbating the other's misconceptions. This is one of my least favorite tropes when played straight, but Akasaka plays the situation for laughs, and it was charming and really funny.
Yu’s unwitting love triangle continues to consume his friends as things are brewing and sides are taken. Just in time for Valentine’s Day (naturally) and, in the background, for Shirogane’s family to look at moving. Meanwhile, exam results don’t go quite so stellar for one person who’s never let their grades slip, but how big a deal could that really be?
I think Yu Ishigami might end up being my favourite character when this is all said and done, which I kind of realized as this volume went on (provided I haven’t said it before, I do a lot of these). He initially seemed like the quintessential gamer nerd, but he’s a lot more nuanced than that and his growth has been really interesting.
And with Kaguya and Miyuki dating, the other relationships have subsequently risen to the surface, particularly in this volume, and I assure you that I am very invested in where that mess that Yu is in might be headed (especially because, as I note every time, I’m rooting for Yu and Miko to get together).
While I would not call this a non-stop riot of comedy, we do get some great moments scattered throughout. Shirogane’s dad, for example, is absolutely ridiculous and his cringe-worthy pronouncements are used sparingly to great effect.
My tolerance for Fujiwara ebbs and flows, but her residential zone snobbery and tantrum over sharing a birthday with Yu are definitely some of the funniest moments in the book. The birthday one is the comedic highlight, especially since Yu has zero problems calling Fujiwara out on her nonsense, which is desperately needed.
But that’s not really the point. No, if anything the sentimentality is cranked way up this time out and it turns out that I was kind of here for it. There’s a chapter that’s nothing so much as four characters going off to a batting cage to hang out and it’s kind of awesome in its gentle simplicity. Valentine’s Day turns out pretty much exactly how you wouldn’t expect.
Then, Yu wants to excel on his exams to impress his crush and not only is Kaguya on hand to help him out, but she’s surprisingly gentle about his inability to focus on his studies (there’s a very fun omake to this one that references the game he’s playing at the start). It’s just… nice.
When the focus does shift back to Kaguya and Miyuki’s relationship later on, there’s some honest-to-god growth that actually took me aback because it involved people being honest with one another and communicating rather than just going for the joke. It’s not the balance I’d normally expect from this series and it’s a very pleasant change (with a great joke at the end, of course).
4 stars - I guess it all comes down to whether I want this series to be funny or well-written and, while I would ideally like it to be both, I am definitely going to come down on the side of good writing pretty much every time and that’s this volume to a tee.
A much more successful continuation than Volume 19, as Akasaka relocates the precise level of tension that made previous Volumes so successful. There's something for everyone here: another Shirogane/Kaguya miscommunication, lots of movement on the Ishigami front, and Chika Fujiwara being a prima donna.
Mike Ino vs. Unrequited Love A lot of pensive squirming about how it feels to love someone who is already in love with someone else. Specifically: how/if you should express your admiration for them, even though it can lead nowhere. It's mostly an excuse to double-down on Miko's attraction to Ishigami, thus cementing their storyline as finally free of the repeating behaviours of Volumes' past. There's a hint of how Ino's behaviour will only increase her misery in the long run, but for now this works to stir the pot ahead of Ishigami's burgeoning story with Tsubame. The least memorable part of the Volume, but still worth exploring. Also, Valentine's Day is surprisingly different for Japan it seems, given how the girls give guys chocolate, but seemingly not the other way around??? It's like the Bumble-ification of a national holiday.
The Student Council vs. Exams Ishigami finally breaks the Top 50 threshold on his exams, and our power couple experience another classic miscommunication (feels like a while since that's happened in earnest, right?) Ishigami's stuff is obviously the most impactful on a macro story level - it being another pivotal step in his self-determination and growing confidence - but it's naturally hard to ignore the attention simultaneously given towards our two main characters. They're getting a little swallowed by the supporting cast as of late (which makes sense given how much of their central conflict has been resolved), so it's nice to see Akasaka find parts of their relationship that still bring out the overthinker in both of them. As delightful as it is to watch them finally put a lot of their anxieties behind them, I know there's a lot more juice left in that tank for this series to mine should it wish to go there, and I'm hoping that it takes the plunge in the time remaining.
Fujiwara vs. her own massive Ego Fujiwara is the only character currently without a storyline attached to her. Admittedly, part of Fujiwara's power over the series is that she is too much of a wildcard to experience 'change' the same way the rest of the cast do, but even so, Akasaka seems to have been reluctant to involve her in the unfolding shenanigans. Still, she is the secret sauce that allows Love is War to operate as successfully as it has done, so I'm happy to check in on her and confirm that she's still as batshit as ever. Whilst everyone else works on their flaws, Fujiwara just keeps on trucking. In any other series, she would be a fairly reprehensible character, but I can't help but love her overinflated sense of self, tempered as it is with total sincerity. She's not a bully - she's just devilish!
Tsubame vs. Eight More Volumes Part of the reason I find the Ino/Ishigami stuff slips through my fingers is because the series is so much more comfortable dedicating time to the other member of the love triangle: Tsubame. From her appearance, Akasaka has clearly had no trouble at all finding ways to bend the narrative towards her, and it seems to be reaching a culmination. There are too many Volumes remaining for me to believe that Ino isn't going to be the eventual endpoint of Ishigami's romance plot, but I'm invested enough in the Tsubame of it all to wonder how on Earth it will navigate it all.
Thoughts for next time: Obviously, what is Tsubame going to say? How drastically will Ishigami's life change now that the Truth is out? Will Shirogane and Kaguya ever goof around without Ino mistaking it for a kink?
Book: Kayuga-sama: Love is War, Vol, 20 Author: Aka Akasama Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
There seem to be so many chapters left to go, but there are not. I know that having a series push three hundred chapters is not that uncommon for manga, but it seems like it for me. It’s not the longest manga I‘ve read. Attack on Titan was shorter in the number of chapters, the chapters were longer.
In this volume, we get to see our characters go through Valentine’s Day and try to figure out that whole situation. I found it rather amusing to get to see them have to deal with something as simple as a Valentine’s Day gift and just see them struggle We also have Miyuki’s family moving up in the world. His dad’s Youtube channel was something of a joke to everyone, but now that it’s taken up, it’s giving the family chances that they never had before. Other than that, I felt like this volume was more of a set set-up to come. I am very curious to see what is to come.
My only complaint though is that I feel that the cast is getting a little too big for the story the author is telling. At the beginning of the manga, we had a very small cast of characters and I was okay with that. However, as the manga has gone on, more chapters keep being added to the series and it’s starting to feel like they are all trying to have their moment in the spotlight. I think the series would progress a lot better if we went back to the smaller cast and allowed them to develop.
I am having a very difficult time remembering who is who in the artwork. At first, I wasn’t having that much trouble, but, again, the more characters that are being added, the more difficult it is becoming to keep everyone straight. I do still like the simple art style.
I am back to having to take some time to track down the newer chapters. My library does not physically or digitally own the new volumes. It may take some time before I get to the next one.
It feels like it has been forever since I've read this series. I have missed these characters and their silly antics so much. I'm proud of Ishigiri for pulling up his class ranking. I'm also happy that the third years are working together to clear his name, while respecting his wishes. I'm curious if Ino will ever confess her feelings for him. I really like Kaguya and Shirogane as a couple. They are so cute and ridiculous. I really like that we get to see Hayasaka interact with people outside of Kaguya and make her own friendships. My favorite chapter was the one with the Valentine's Day chocolates.
I'm a bit sad that the manga has officially ended and now I only have 8 volumes left with these characters but I hopefully will enjoy it and the conclusion for everyone.

The freaking cliffhangers what got me I went to the next volume and I just skipped everything to find out the answer. And it happened the way that I thought it would but like dang really leave it on cliffhanger and then do like a whole chapter before you give the answer what the heck?
Oh my god and Eno being in love with ishigami!!!!! I love them. I love them so much. I want nothing but happiness for her and ishigami even if it's not together I don't care I just want everyone in this story to be happy except for stupid people who didn't like ishigami because of a stupid rumor
How can there not be a super Valentines Day volume when this series deals with love, relationships How can there not be a super Valentines Day volume when this series deals with love, relationships and growth? Aka Akasaka handles these duties with a masterclass in entertainment and yet stays true to the characters. Not always an easy task to execute. The volume really had a lot of great moments...but the gem of this is that the characters are growing and so are the situations.
The valentines part was quite good, and the development of Ino and Yu is going quite well. Tsubane is such a great character, tho.. My favourite part was where they cleared the misconception of Ishigami. My boy deserves everything. Best Boy. Also damn Daddy Shirogane is earning a lot, huh! Also getting stalked, lmao.
i genuinely believe this series has gotten better and better as the manga progressed. there have been some bland bits but they worked well as fillers before new developments happened! this is a great recommendable manga and the anime is equally as good
The focus for the most part in this installment is on Yu as he works to better himself in hopes of asking out the girl he likes. At the same time the girl in question Tsubame seems to be working behind the scenes on her own plan.
Kaguya's expressions are always cute. Her personality has softened a lot since the beginning. I'm Team Miko, paired with Yu. Chika is the funniest of all. Cute chapter about the caught fish. The stories are really well told.
Es muy bueno pero tal como la intro, sintió que es bastante dramático lo que vendrá en el próximo tomo, y saber que pasará con Ishigami y Kyoyasu lo hace más emocionante
