TAKERS: Apocalypse in Eden Book 1
TAKERS was just re-released in hardcover. It's the story of a boy, Jack, and a deaf pit-bull named Snake who have to battle the cannibalistic Takers after the monsters are spat out into the town of Eden, Texas from a parallel universe called Purgatory.
A former emergency services dispatcher, rock-n-roll radio station secretary, hospital information operator, and grade school teacher, Ann Swann has been many things. Through it all were the words. She's been a writer since her teenage years and began winning fiction awards in college. As a child she grew up much like Stevie-girl in small town Texas. One difference? Ann never got up the nerve to enter the haunted house alone. She waited until she married her husband, Dude, then they went in together. Ann would love to hear your thoughts on her stories. Feel free to message her at any of
Telephone Road is the latest book written by Ann Swann. I was hooked immediately from the first page, enveloped by the genuine qualities of the characters and their lives in Texas. I was born and lived many years there and felt immediately at home. The book is imbued with the flavor of the area and the unaffected personalities of the characters. Her portrayal of the importance of family shone through. The main character, Marlena, is a college student from West Texas who is enrolled in school in Austin. Although she considers herself a small-town girl at heart and has little experience in or desires to party like many of the other students, Preston quickly attempts to draw her into his world, which involves drinking and drugs. She resists, and it angers and challenges him, since he comes from a wealthy family and is accustomed to getting his own way. When he begins to stalk her, it scares her and makes her even more determined to break off all contact with him. She goes home over Thanksgiving to her small West Texas hometown, Window, and is reunited with a boy she knew in high school. They both realize how much they like each other, and she tells her girlfriend that Jimmy is “the one.” Marlena is even more determined to break off any relationship that Preston has imagined they have. When Marlena agrees to meet Preston in order to tell him she doesn’t want to see him and that she has found someone new, he invents a scheme to get her alone and vulnerable on an almost deserted road outside of Austin, Telephone Road. He brutally attacks her, with the intention of killing her. He rapes her after stabbing and unmercifully beating her, leaving her unconscious and bleeding. He thinks he will never see her again, but she is stronger than he thinks and manages to get to a police station where she accuses him of attempted murder and rape. His parents pay a witness to vote against the conviction when it goes to trial, and there is a hung jury. He immediately begins his harassment of her, and she is convinced that his sister has also been abused by him. Marlena grows stronger as a result of therapy and the support of her friends and family. She knows that she will never be free of him and will never have a normal life as long as he’s alive, so she hatches a plan to bait him into the open. She demonstrates her strength and resilience as the book unfolds. The author uses her characters to reveal a discussion about the subjects of rape, assault, the importance of family and friends, and to show what constitutes a loving and healthy relationship. I highly recommend this book, because it approaches many issues in a way that is captivating and interesting. I intend to read it again, which is what I do when I discover a book I consider truly engaging.
Ms. Swann immerses the reader into a sinister and disturbing story about how a young college girl being terrorized by a sick and twisted madman tries to turn her life around by no longer being the victim.
Marlena is a strong and intelligent young woman who is to be admired for trusting her instincts as long as she did and surviving a horrific attack. However, justice doesn't always prevail and she takes matters into her own hands at the detriment of someone close to her. Can she have a future with the man she loves after all that's happened?
The author's characters are very believable and well-developed. Jimmy is a kind soul who truly loves Marlena and would do anything for her, but in stark reality, Marlena can't erase what happened to her. She is different from the person Jimmy first met and Ms. Swann does a fantastic job describing Marlena's thought process throughout the whole story. As for Marlena's friends and family, they are amazing and strong role models.
Overall, this tense, fast-paced suspense thriller with a thought-provoking ending is filled with terror, pain, love, and survival. Recommend highly!
Triggers include rape, murder, and stalking.
Thank you to Ms. Swann for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
I started this book at 10 am and put it down for the first time when I read the last word at 7 pm. Wow. What a genre-bender! Twists and turns I didn't see coming kept me turning pages - that the writing was wonderful. I felt like I traveled with the flawed characters on that roller coaster. The ending will stay with me a long time, wondering what I would have done.
Highly recommend it!
Copy given by the publisher for an honest review. This is that.
Really liked the plot and watching her overcome and grow stronger. Lots of twists and turns and I certainly didn't see the ending but I liked it. Loved the characters so much went through every emotion at the end.
I was given an ARC of this story and I found it to be very well done because it tackles a disturbing topic in a responsible yet emotive way. I could feel the fear, the anger, the outrage of injustice, especially against those corrupted by power.
Stories like this are a worthy read due to the impact they can have on readers and it's always good to see strong women in action.
I wasn't sure about some of the decisions - I don't give spoilers - but I would have thought that keeping that secret might not be best for a trusting relationship. You will have to read it to understand what I mean.
However, it was a fast-paced, well-written tale with good characters.
Yes, a very good crime thriller with important messages.
Yes, this is my own book. It's a twisty morality tale. Sort of a what would you do story. I would read it even if I wasn't the author because I like books with quirky, flawed, characters and twisty plots that challenge the characters' morals.
If you read this book, I'd love to hear your opinion. Do you think Marlena did the right thing, or was she out of line? And how about Dash and Destiny? What do you think of their actions ... in other words, what would YOU do?
Telephone Road by Ann Swan A small town girl goes to a big city college in Texas, can she stay a small town girl with all the parties and guys? She’s from Windows Texas where people knew each other, small schools, a Main Street that was dead after 10:00, ranches, factory’s etc. The best to grow up in if you ask me. This was a page turner I couldn’t put it down until my eyes blurred!!! Small town girl meets a rich guy, can she keep her small town image, or is she swayed by the rich guy and his cronies. There’s so many twists and turns that had me thinking ahead of the story. Each chapter had me riveted to the story. The characters were people we all knew growing up, especially if your a small town girl. This was a really good read!!!! Download yours today, you’ll love it I promise!!!
Telephone Road is a suspense drama that will lead you down a path of hanging on to every word for every character until the end of the book. At the end of the book, you will want to take the book and throw it! I loved this book for its suspense, drama, and mystery components. It is a page-turner that will leave you wanting more! You will love Anne for all of her eccentric attributes that turn out to be not so eccentric after all. She is the perfect protagonist for this book. You will walk behind her at every revelation and each aha moment. Not all is what it seems, and by the same token, all is exactly what it appears to be.

Intense, dark, gritty, and real. This book will stay with you long after the last page. Marlena suffers a series of horrible experiences. This story is the journey her life takes. I absolutely adored Jim. And Dash became so much more than I expected. The characters are what make this story so compelling. This one runs you through an emotional rollercoaster. The ending was perfect. I highly recommend this book and author. I am never disappointed.

I do not want to say this is a great story but it is. It sucks you in and holds you to the last page. When Marlena is stalked, assaulted and left for dead she lives in a constant state of fear. When she feels more violated by the trail than she did by the assault she does not know if she can go through it again. When she meets a girl named Destiny that has endured more than even her. They decide there is only one thing left to do. Revenge. This is a story that hold your attention to the last page. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Telephone Road by Ann Swann starts out in a good place. A young woman from a very small town leaves home to go to a big city to attend college. Things are going great and then Girl meets Boy and the real story begins. You will not be able to stop reading it, it is that enthralling. The horrors that Girl goes through trying to stop Boy from stalking her are as real as they would be if it was really happening to you! Ann Swann does a suburb job of describing not only the physical damage that Boy does to Girl, but also the psychological damage that he does. Ms. Swann leaves nothing out, not one single detail of the horror from the beginning to the end. This story grabbed me and I didn’t put it down only for a few minutes at a time to let my mind accept what Girl was going through. It is truly a life changing book. You live the story as you read it. The ending is truly a surprise and along with the book you will remember it for a very long time. Kudos to Ms Swann for such a suburb book. I highly recommend this book.
An intense read that I couldn't put down! Every woman should read this book, and from this story, know her own inner strength. This was very well written, a bit graphic in some spots, but the story needed to be shared. More intense than "Yeah, But I Didn't " (by the same author), but still a very good read. I highly recommend this book.
This is my first time reading anything from this author and it’s a story that grabbed my attention from the get-go and refused to let go till I’d read the final page. It’s a definite page-turner that moves along at a nice steady pace with plenty of suspense, emotion along with some twists and turns in the plot. The characters are also well rounded. A wonderful read.

Telephone Road is absolutely chilling. There's always that one moment when you look back and realize there were warning signs. Signs you missed or ignored for whatever reason. Having dealt with guys like Preston before this absolutely chilled me to the bone. The imagery is vivid and you won't want to put it down once you start.
Telephone Road is a twisty, genre-bender that will have you hanging off of every word! Well-written and full of atmosphere, I found I could not put this one down, which is exactly what I want from a thriller. I want to read it cover to cover in one sitting and had no problem at all with Ann Swann’s latest!
Wow, just wow. Loved every word in this book that I couldn't put down. Unputdownable would be the true genre this romance-thriller-horror-redemption books should fall! Ann Swann creates some pretty spooky worlds in her books and this one was no exception!
Stop reading my review, right now, and buy this book! You can thank me later!
Wow what a read I could hardly put it down! This book is filled with twists and turns I didn't see coming and I was on the edge of my seat. What does one do in this kind of scenario? Would we seek vengeance or justice if we could choose? Fascinating look at flawed characters and and hard choices.
I really enjoyed this book. Telephone Road is about a victim who decides she doesn't want to be a victim anymore. She takes matters into her own hands. I am so glad that the main character decided to go and get help. A lot of victims don't and I think that's what made me love this book. I am so so glad she depended on herself and got help. To be honest I'm kind of happy and sad about the ending. Mostly because the blame is put on someone who really didn't deserve it.
This book was really good. It grabbed my emotions and kept me pulled into the story from start to finish. The story is very well written and the character work is great. I found the story intense and suspenseful and would definitely recommend reading.

Telephone Road is a thriller novel by Ann Swann and it's worth your time. With every page turned (or scrolled) things get creepier and creepier. The first parts of the book gave me the chills just by thinking about life with a stalker, and especially one who is influential with power. Marlena goes through a lot (read the warning above) and even though Preston's treated her like she's his property, she does not hold back and wages war against him for what he's done and in doing so the things that we find out he's been doing to people even closer to him shows that he's more than just a "stalker". Basically, Preston is worse than dirt and deserves to rot in hell. But there was a particular character who had THE best arc development and by the end stole my heart. (No spoilers so read to find out who 🙈.) The ending was bittersweet and made me shed a year because it was justice but the cost was too much to bear. But, the thing that can be taken away the most from this book is the real world implications. Thousands of people out there are being stalked, raped and murdered because they rejected someone. But is justice always received? This is a brilliantly written thriller with a lot of twists, some of them were unexpected, but it's definitely worth the read. Rated 9.5/10
You certainly will get a glimpse into small town Texas life and culture here. I know it brought me back to days when I lived and went to schools in them. It is a very suspenseful dramatic read. You will be drawn into these family oriented characters fast. I was very impressed with this book and how it was written. Great read. Read during the Corona Virus Pandemic of 2020.
I've read several of Ann Swann's books (always a treat), but this may be one of my favorites.
I love it when I start reading a book and I'm already "into it" on page one. Immediately, this story pulled me in and I started asking myself questions like, "what's going on here?" and "how is A connected to B?" and so much more.
When Marlena Matthews is brutally assaulted and left for dead by the man who had been stalking her, the aftermath of such an event was horrible enough. But this thing called life is complex, and it almost always gives us more difficult days ahead in the wake of such horrors.
After Marlena endures more post-attack suffering, she questions the road ahead (pun not really intended), and makes decisions that others in her situation may not ever THINK of making. Then, as events unfold, there are more decisions to consider, ones Marlena never could have foreseen. How do you "do the right thing" when every action has pros and cons? The author really puts the reader into the mindset of "What do I THINK I would I do?"
Ann Swann writes intelligent, believable, and flawed characters who don't fit neatly into a stereotype. Aside from Telephone Road being a great story, I'm still thinking about it and that's what a great storyteller does for her readers.
