We started our journey with a photograph. A childhood friend turned murderer. A symbol of hope amid Wuhan’s SARS outbreak. A family torn apart by genocide. An infant’s fight to survive. 16 pictures, each imbued with mystery. Each photo left us asking, what happened here? Why did we move on, and who was left behind? We went on a quest to find the truth, only to make discoveries we didn’t expect. We spent months investigating friends, families, and strangers long gone. We used our journalistic training to reconstruct the details time forgot. In the attic of inherited memories, the floorboards creaked as we dusted off old aches. We asked the questions people didn’t want us to. These are 16 true and forgotten stories about flight and freedom, grandeur and humility, failure and triumph. This is what happened. Half the proceeds from this book will be donated to Coalition for the Homeless, “the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless men, women and children” in the city of New York.
