Megan Granger, an investigative journalist, discovers a rundown farm in the English countryside is being used to detain and torture convicted criminals for pleasure and profit. Unable to resist a story that could make her reputation, she becomes entangled with people for whom extreme violence and murder represent a way of life. As the danger escalates, Megan understands she will need to become like them, if she is to survive to tell her tale.
Oliver Tidy may have taken a long hiatus from writing/publishing but he certainly hasn’t lost his touch and is back with a vengeance. My choice of word there was an unintentional irony because vengeance is at the heart of this book. The eponymous Harm Farm is only the start of this story and the tension ratchets up exponentially as the tale progresses. Just when you think it can’t get more perilous - it does. It has taken me a little longer to read than usual because I disciplined myself not to read it in the evenings, knowing that if I did it would keep me up until it was finished and possibly for some time after that.
There is an undefinable quality to Oliver Tidy's writing throughout all his genres and this book has it in bucket loads. This book was no tentative step back into storytelling, it was more like exploding through the door yelling "I’m baaack" for which his readers are immensely grateful.
I have read and liked a lot of his earlier stuff. Right from the start I could not see Megan as acting plausibly, for example, when you confront an intruder you absolutely call the police. In fact I found her to be a bit of a smartarse. Nor did I see her relationship with Karl as believable. At about 3/4 way through I bombed put realising I did not care for any of the characters. Sorry this was not for me.
I read this as I have enjoyed nearly all Oliver Tidy's books. This story is fast paced and leaves you slightly breathless. I did hope the main characters would stay together but that was impossible.
The darkest book I have read written by OT. Zero humour to punctuate the death and destruction. I thought the first part of the book had more legs but it was concluded quickly as the story took a turn.
I love Oliver's writing. I’ve read two of his series and have never been disappointed so I was really looking forward to this stand-alone effort. Wow - a great story and a great, perfectly-paced read. It starts off a bit gory so don’t say you weren’t warned. Enjoy!
A book with two stories only connected by using the same characters. The first part was intriguing only to find the remainder of the book a bit drawn out concentrating on a personal vendetta. A good read by a talented new author.
