Across the continents, this beautifully illustrated book of prayers reflects on God's amazing world, celebrating different countries, landscapes and traditions. From fishing villages to the African plains, farming in Peru to the snowy landscape of Greenland, blossoms in Japan and leaf kicking in eastern Europe and to the shores of the Pacific ocean, these prayers share God's love and care for his world.
In Prayers around the World, Deborah Lock and Helen Cann present a beautiful book of prayer celebrating God’s love for his world.
With gorgeous illustrations, this book praises our indescribable God. It shows him to be sovereign over all the world, and a faithful caretaker of his children.
Rest in the Lord
Every turn of the page will provide your children with a different glimpse of the world. And the prayers will give you words to praise.
The book closes with Psalm 67, 113, and 148. It is a wonderful way to end your day and bless your children as they rest in the Lord.
I received a media copy of Prayers Around the World and this is my honest review.
Prayers Around the World is a good option for bedtime. The premise of this book, to get to know prayers from different countries, is a great way to introduce different cultures to kids. With beautiful illustrations, this short book presents the different prayers among the pages. I just wished maybe for the original prayer in their original language and then the english translation, since it's about different countries, to include the native language would have been a thoughtful detail.
This was such a lovely book. The illustrations were beautiful and vividly detailed, and the text was as well. I wish there was more information about the actual cultures of the places around the world, but for simplicity’s sake, this worked just fine. I would definitely buy it for my nephew and read it to him.
This was such a good book. It would be a good bedtime story or just a book to look through in a child's home library. It gives prayers from around the world and shows different places where people live. The illustrations are wonderful and I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a bedtime prayer book or a good book to talk to your children about their relationship with God.
Eerdmans Books for Young Readers publishes a refreshingly eclectic range of illustrated books. While some fit the theme of typical children’s books, there are also those that I would classify more as illustrated poetry. That’s what A World of Praise is. There’s nothing inherent in Deborah Lock’s focus that makes this book “for young readers.” In fact, if I’m nitpicking, there are elements of the vocabulary that I would say are beyond most young readers. The back of the book defines A World of Praise simply as “A global hymn to God’s abundant love and care for his creation.” And that’s what this book is: an illustrated hymn that takes readers around the world to reflect on God’s creation and praise Him for it.
The opening pages offer up an introductory refrain of praise that sets the tone for the book:
All the world from East to West
Gives praise to you….
All the world from North to South
Gives praise to you…
From here, Lock and illustrator Helen Cann take readers on a sweeping, worldwide journey from the peaks of the Andes to underneath Japanese cherry blossom trees to the coastlines of Norway. A World of Praise features sixteen different locations—catalogued in the book’s final pages—visually expressing that “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it” (Psa. 24:1).
Cann uses evocative colors that focus on landscapes, but usually with children or families in the background. From the rich blues of the coast to the greens of the countryside and the whites of ice and snow, A World of Praise presents the world and its people as beautifully diverse and yet all part of the same Creator’s masterwork. Lock’s poetry is best experienced read aloud as she uses a variety of refrains to create a psalm of praise.
We come together for a time of thanksgiving.
We join together to support each other.
We meet together to share what you have given us.
We celebrate together with thanks to you.
For our food, our freedom, and our country.
A World of Praise is a reflective, worshipful work that isn’t just for kids. Lock and Cann use their talents to portray a diverse world worth praising and worth protecting. It’s perfect for any age.
This is a beautifully illustrated and inspirational book. Adults and children can meditatively view the illustrations and offer praise in their own words.
Prayers Around the World by Deborah Lock, Helen Cann (Illustrator) Back of the Book: “Across the continents, this beautifully illustrated book of prayers reflects on God's amazing world, celebrating different countries, landscapes and traditions. From fishing villages to the African plains, farming in Peru to the snowy landscape of Greenland, blossoms in Japan and leaf kicking in eastern Europe and to the shores of the Pacific ocean, these prayers share God's love and care for his world.” Impressions: This was a beautifully illustrated book but I did not care for it. There wasn’t prayers around the world but a prayer that weaved through the world’s countries. I was looking for something more specific to each country and perhaps specific prayers that help understand their lives and culture more. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
I received an ARC copy of Prayers Around the World courtesy of @Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Prayers Around the World by Deborah Lock reads like a book of poor, immature poetry. I personally didn't appreciate the style and the book gave no sense of being set in any specific place around the globe as the title would suggest. Instead, the prayers focused on the countryside and harvests.
The book is a series of prayers that are probably pitched at the Christian community. The basic text is written in a faux, old-fashioned way that requires some unpicking of the language. The best thing about the book are the beautiful illustrations by Helen Cann.
Although well-edited, I think the prose is poor. I rate this a fairly average 3/5 stars. It's not a series of prayers I'd recite more than once.
The beauty of “Prayers around the world” by Deborah Lock and Helen Cann is evident from the time you gaze at the cover! All the people that Gid lives from East to West and North to South are right there on the cover.
The thought and love that was put into making this children’s picture prayer book is astounding. The beautiful, easy read is even more impressive with the gorgeous illustrations throughout.
Any child who is lucky enough to get their small hands on this book will truly see how Gods love shines down in all of us, no matter who we are or where we come from. He loves us all the same.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy. For a book titled "Prayers Around the World," I was expecting more to be shared from the major religions around the world. However, only Christianity is referenced. I liked the Table of Contents, but I did not see the countries' names on the pages featured. The illustrations did not seem to always match the country locations. While there are some Asian looking children, I did not see any brown skinned children. I was disappointed in this book, expected more, and will pass on this book every time.
With awe and thanksgiving, this prayer book for small hands and big hearts will be blessing. Forty pages of colorful illustrations and the goodness of God to share with our children.
I appreciated how each page brings you closer to the Lord and to the world we live in. It is a book that is meant to be shared.
A special thank you to Lion Hudson and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This book opens with a verse from Psalms. This is an indicator of the types of prayers you will find in this book. There are soft and sweet illustrations that support the prayers. This would make a great book for reading at bedtime to help establish a young readers faith in Christ. It is also a great model for how to pray for a child or adult who is just starting out on their path to faith.
This book of prayers is beautiful. I love the art and the prayers. The prayers come from around the world (hence the title) plus some scripture passages. I love the book and I plan to include it in our kid's bedtime routine.
This beautiful book gives us a glimpse into how people around the world think about and praise God. The prayers are beautiful, but the book may be worth purchasing for the artwork alone. Really stunning
