An in-depth analysis of the best video game franchises, characters, consoles, and computers of the 1980's. Curating the most important games, including Pac Man, Tetris, Frogger, Outrun, Zelda, Super Mario, and more, as well as the hardware: the NES, C64, Sega Mega System, the Amiga 50, and more.
Can tell that this was made by Retro Gamer, from the fact that it practically ignores the existence of several gaming genres, such as adventure, strategy, and CRPG. There's the token Dungeon Master on the Amiga top-list of course, but these articles have always been heavily lopsided towards action-arcade games.
The fact that the Amiga Top 25 contains games like Datastorm (currently scored an average 7.93 on Lemon Amiga) and three almost identical soccer games while omitting ones like Dune II, Civilization, Pirates!, Moonstone, Worms, and any number of worthier games shows that the writers aren't qualified to make an 'essential guide' to 80s gaming. (And no, it's not because some of those were released in 90s. So were several other games on the list.)
5 / 5 for 'The Ultimate 80s Retro Gaming Collection ' by RetroGamer / Imagine Publishing
The makers of RetroGamer bless us with another wonderful bookazine, this time focussing on the 1980s; possibly gaming's most important decade. Excellently written, vibrantly illustrated, and as always utterly brilliant from cover to cover!
Decent for what it is, a list of the top games of the 80's, a couple of in depth interviews with creators and some good back stories on some of the consoles. a solid 4 star.
