Academy Magic: The Complete Series

Rate this book
The Academy Magic bundle set includes all five books in the series full of non-stop action, adventure, magic, and irresistible romance. Magic. Isn’t. Real. At least that's what I thought. But now, my story is changing... You know you’re invisible when even your bullies forget to pick on you. That’s me, Bettina Blair, hidden in plain sight. No matter how hard I try I just never fit in with my classmates. Now I know why. I’m a witch...apparently. One little demon attack and my parents confess their ugly secret…and ship me off to an elite academy of magic- for witches only. I can't summon magic. I can't fight with my hands or my fists. I just don't belong here, and Jackson Lancaster keeps reminding me every single chance he gets. This boy is the most insufferable, intolerable, unbearable, judgmental person to ever have the right to be that gorgeous. I don’t care how sexy his British accent is, or that literally everyone else on campus adores him. He hates me, and the feeling is mutual. Suddenly, I’m sent on a quest into the Old Lands to find the only thing that can save Eden from a demon invasion. I’m in way over my head, and my best chance of coming back alive lies in the hands of the guy who wants me gone… * Academy Magic is Season Two in The Coven Series. It can be read as a standalone but contains some spoilers for Season One - Elemental Magic. Worth every second

It took me three days to finish this entire series. Three days of staying up past 4am reading and it was WORTH EVERY SECOND. This series takes you on a roller coaster than you can’t get off of. Tina and Jackson, ugh I waited for so long for them together together. I kept thinking, please just date, be soulmates. I cried when they finally connected and found out they were enteral soulmates. Then when I found out Tenn and Tina were siblings and trading the death of their mother I absolutely lost my shît. I cried like a baby, my heart felt like it had been broken into a million pieces. The only thing I can really say is, if you don’t read this series you will regret it.

Best ever! Must read

Amazing. This series Is the best that I’ve ever read. I laughed, cried, jumped up and down, screamed yelled and just lived this series of books. There are no words to describe how much you feel part of the coven and I would recommend that anyone read this book.

keep tissues close

In reading the series I discovered how to laugh and how to cry all while being on the edge of my seat. These characters are so well put together and so dynamic and it makes such a great storyline. I cried throughout the entire series not one book was there not a tear shed. This author did great work with the storyline and these characters.

Decent series

I read them all in a two weeks.

Wasn’t super impressed. Needed more descriptive parts and possibly more research into the witch elements.

Felt a little basic to me. Some of the descriptions included “looked like hogwarts”.

I was desperate for some magic and I wouldn’t exactly recommend this series.

It was just a meh for me.

My cup of tea

These books kept me hooked. I liked reading from the different points of view of all the main characters, but it could be a little confusing at times. I loved the mystery and story line. The only thing I didn’t like is the author would repeat herself in the storytelling a lot in similar scenarios throughout the book(s).

DNF during 2nd book

Just couldn’t continue.
Pros:
I liked the MFC, and the love interest
Storyline was good
Liked the world

Cons:
Wtf was happening. Major details were skipped. I felt like I was thrown into the 2nd book and rushing to catch up.
Weird chapters. One chapter she literally ate and then walked into the gym and then it ended and the next chapter was two days later??
Missing details on surroundings and what was going on.
Love interests back and forth attitude. I finally just rolled my eyes at him for wanting her then not, then wanting her, then not, then wanting her then not. Like bro just pick one.
I felt the book started off really well then just degraded.

Holy hellebore... I can't believe I just read this whole series that quickly. This was a deliciously fast-paced paranormal adventure of the YA sort. This series was fun, flirty, action-packed and... at my age, enticed me to stay up late reading into the wee hours of the morning... on work nights. Gah!

This was another Facebook find-- I downloaded a ebook sample off an advertisement, and was hooked. I did not know what I was getting into or I may not have started into this massive time-suck... because I couldn't put this down!

So, I now know that these books are a "season" of a huge series of books that fall under "The Coven"-- and this is "Season 2". I may have to pick up Season 1... but when I have a real gap in time to read because these were addictive.

The Coven series order:
1. The Coven: Elemental Magic
2. The Coven: Academy Magic -- THIS SERIES--
2a. The Coven: School of Magical Arts (novellas)
3. The Coven: Fae Magic

This series follows Bettina Blair, and the books included in Season 2 (Academy Magic) are in order as follows:

The Hidden Witch
The Fallen Witch
The Wild Witch
The Frozen Witch
The Secret Witch

I'm not sure what events happened in what book... but I can say that each and every one of the books ends on a cliff hanger, so buying the ebook series was a good idea. (I think I'm learning about those feisty ebooks.) Normally, this would turn me off on an unfinished series, but being able to nab the whole series is a blessing. Whew!

A brief plot synopsis: Bettina Blair discovers that she's, in fact, not human. She's a witch, and her aura is intense. She's sent to witch school, sorted into her house with a crystal ball (there is some tongue-in-cheek self mockery by the author who is a fan of the Harry Potter series)... she then proceeds to learn magic. Meanwhile, there are other plot-lines flowing through the book.-- the attraction to Jackson Lancaster, a British mage who seems to have it out for Bettina from the beginning, despite her frustrations with him. Lancaster has his own story line, which is resolved somewhere mid-series, that involves finding archangel Michael's sword to restore his family's magic. Then, there's this whole back story around The Coven and some of The Coven's history with Lilith and Joseph. That comes to a head at the end of the series. There are challenges, sub plots and everything was contiguous. It was crazy. I don't think I've been this excited by multiple plot-lines since I read the first four books in "A Song of Ice and Fire" (you may know it as Game of Thrones) back in 2004.

Anyway-- the books have a few loose ends that aren't wrapped up in this series, which make it enticing to read more. It's like foreshadowing crack to pacify the addiction to read more. The action in the books is great. It's non-stop. The continuity is amazing. And, yeah, there are parts where it's so fast-paced that some details are glazed over. This book is kinda for those of us who like an intricately woven web of action without the hassle of getting hung up on nitty-gritty details. But, that's the beauty of the YA book-- it doesn't have to be detailed.

... though if there was one detail I wanted explained it would have been what happened to Timothy...

These books are meant to be fun, and they are! They're full of cheese and pop-culture references like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Avengers/IronMan/Black Widow/etc. The dialogue is hilariously fun and the characters are so fun, flirty and really well written. Each member of The Coven has their own personality, and it's a delight to read them all-- and I admit to laughing at every "Not today, Satan" line of dialogue despite it's utter cheesiness!

I'm ear-marking this one as a series to revisit when I've more time to read... as it so happens, September is just starting and I've Halloween costumes to sew... and, wouldn't you know it-- I'm dressing as a witch this year. *wink*

Very cute series. I can't remember any swears, and the "romancing" is there-- but it's fade-to-black sex with mostly written foreplay. So... tastefully written, I thought. It was refreshing after that other tripe I've been reading lately. Haha.

Highly recommend!

.... and, Ms. LaVaun, bring on more COVEN! Please!

Three stories from School of Magical Arts also reviewed here.

Aside from either the parent’s oblique permission or complete lack of knowledge about the situation, isn’t having sex at 16 STATUTORY RAPE even if consensual? It also seems that these young ladies dress like hookers for special events. Cool, cool, cool? I don’t think so.

These people are always skipping. Who skips? Also, why is hair styled in a “messy” bun? Is there no such thing as a “neat” bun?

I read the Elemental Magic series, then the Fire Witch story which is recommended to read after the last story in EM (Aether Witch) I feel like I should point out how non sequential these stories are. There are four stories in the School of Magical Arts which are to be read interspersed with the other series. I don’t know why the author chose to mix it up like this rather than publish them in a logical manner. There’s also a set called Fae Magic and I haven’t figured out how it fits in yet. (Answer - It’s a spinoff)

The first story here, Hidden Witch, features Tegan’s bestie Bettina. There’s a minor plot glitch almost right away when she sneaks off to a party hosted by her friend Dean. Dean holds a soiree once a year to discover witches who may have their magic suppressed. Now, her parents know she’s a witch and have, “since the moment you came into our lives,” which indicates to me that they may not be her birth parents, otherwise why not say, “since you were born.” Anyway, why would they ground her for attending this party knowing its objective?

I haven't read the entire story yet but am missing the format where each chapter is told from the viewpoint of a different character. So far it’s all Bettina all the time. I’d like to know what in the hell Jackson is feeling to act like such a prick. (Finally, he speaks! - chapter 25)

It is sort of novel how the author intersperses situations from one book into another, i.e., when Lennox* meets Tegan. The earlier version was from Tegan’s viewpoint and in this book we see it from Lennox’s perspective. You gotta give the author kudos for keeping so many characters straight.
Don’t even get me started on all the nicknames and use of last versus first names. This book ends on a tragic cliffhanger and the next picks up right where this left off.

*Speaking of Lennox - She refers to an earlier roommate; a snooty bitch from New York. I haven’t gone back to check if this woman is one of the ones who gave Emersyn such a hard time in The Fire Witch but I wouldn’t be surprised. Follow Up: Why yes, yes it does appear that it was the same Caroline according to her memories in City Witch. Again, props to the author for all the storyline crossovers.

Fallen Witch - A few highlights: Bettina is accused of murdering one of the Coven members and is consequently tried and found guilty in the eyes of everyone except her closest confidants. Tegan and the rest of the Coven arrive to make the final determination. Tegan loses her ever-loving mind when she realizes Bettina is the one being charged. A Coven member with the ability to determine truth from falsehood finds that Bettina has been telling the truth and that she is innocent.

It dawns on Bettina that couples are generally soulmarked upon meeting their partner and it hasn’t occurred between her and Jackson. Jackson is hot and cold towards her due to his upcoming trial with Michael, the archangel. He doesn’t want his feelings for Bettina to interfere with his preparation for this life changing event.

Question: It is mentioned numerous times that Jackson smells like Christmas. Wouldn’t this constant aroma ruin the holiday? One of the things I like is that it only occurs for a short time once a year so it doesn’t become an every day occurrence.

A group of them travel to Crone’s Island in the hope that Kenneth can be brought back from Witch's Shock. Bettina’s magic is unbound. Kraken! Tenn is officially made the Coven leader. Jackson is marked as a member of the Coven. Some Coven members return to the Old Lands to attempt rescuing Warner.

The next story in the anthology picks up right where this one leaves off but according to the author I should read City Witch next. So here I go, always the obedient servant.

City Witch (from School of Magical Arts) - Emersyn and Deacon return to New York to assist in setting up a new magic school there. Carolyn and Emersyn bury the hatchet. Both Deacon and Emersyn dream about Cooper in the Old Lands and realize the group there is in trouble. They contact some magical animals in Central Park who agree to try to find out what has happened to the group Cooper is a part of. A pegasus returns with Tegan’s leather jacket...

Wild Witch - Picks up where Fallen Witch ends, starting with Warner’s viewpoint. The witches in the Old Land are rescued. Joseph and his shadows attack Eden. The archangel Michael appears and sets Jackson on the quest to find the stolen sword. He’s allowed to bring Tegan, Cooper and Bettina along for help. They first visit Crone’s Island, then go on a scavenger hunt following clues hidden under the sea and across the UK and France. The action scenes would be better witnessed in a movie a la Raiders of the Lost Ark than reading and trying to envision it, IMO. A new witch is selected for the Coven (replacing Timothy?)

Can’t remember which book but at some point the Fae spell is broken so Saffie can leave the amusement park. She is additionally marked with the Death tarot card number. She’s whisked off to Salem.

Frozen Witch - Bettina is marked as Timothy’s replacement and becomes a member of the Coven. She and Jackson are still attracted to each other with no soulmark appearing for her. She ups her game in using ice magic. It turns out Trey is in cahoots with the enemy. The Coven acquires a snitch to work undercover in Joseph’s domain.

Secret Witch - Tenn is having constant nightmares about when he last saw his mother. Five of the Coven go to Dean’s home to use his ancient Ouija board to help locate Ruth’s missing locket containing her powerful spells. (I’m pretty sure it is disguised as the key on the necklace she gave Tenn - further reading will reveal if I’m right or not)(I was wrong) Why did Joseph interfere with Ruth’s attempt to appease the spirits? Did I forget? Did I ever know? Why doesn’t Hope get wings like Haven? She’s Michael’s granddaughter too, so same bloodline. This book has so many twists and turns that I can’t even begin to summarize. Just read it.

Uptown Witch (SOMA) - Em and Deacon return to New York at Christmastime. They stay busy fine tuning the school and preparing for the upcoming Yule party. In one scene Em is wearing her cowboy boots and a few minutes later she’s wearing thigh-high boots (Chanel, I think. Could it be magic?) At one point I thought, "Hmm, it’s kind of nice that there’s no drama here.” I was wrong (again)

Empire Witch (SOMA) - Keltie makes an appearance to give an update on Saffie who has apparently completely lost her memory thanks to the Fae king. SOMA is attacked by the same group that had kidnapped Amelia and Landy in the previous book. Amelia, even though only 12 years old, has apparently met her soulmate. Em and Deacon finally do the deed.

Apparently a standalone entitled The Rose Witch is next. Then The Coven: Fae Magic. Can’t figure out where Chosen Witch fits. Not only that, but I can’t even seem to locate whether it's published as a standalone. It doesn’t appear in any of the anthologies. (It turns out its only available in paperback) CORRECTION: You can get it + one about when Jackson first met Bettina for free by joining the author’s newsletter) Then, after I’ve read all the books there is one entitled The Covens Insider’s Guide. Geez Louise. Plus another spinoff where Cooper meets his soulmate (which as it turns out aren’t so uncommon after all) Another spinoff about Maddox & Amelia via a Facebook group. I may never catch up.

5 stars for The Coven: Academy Magic Series by Chandelle LaVaun. This review is for books 1-5. This is season two of the Coven Series. OMG this series just keeps getting better and better. I have been captivated since the first page of book one in season one. The way Chandelle LaVaun keeps building this world and its characters makes me never want to put the book down. This part of the story is more focused on Bettina and Jackson’s stories, but we still get POVs from some of our other favorite characters. We do finally figure out Tenn’s past and why he could not remember anything and let me just say WOW. Bettina, who we know is Teagan’s best friend finds out she is a witch, after a freaky incident with a Ouija board. Her and Jackson are instantly drawn together but it does not seem they are soul mates. I don’t want to talk about their relationship too much because it might ruin things, but I will say it is filled with ups and downs and I shed some tears. I really could not put this book down. The group are facing not only the demons that escaped the gap but a shadow creature/ person they know as Joseph. This all has to do with what a with name Ruth and her Husband Micha tried to do to fix what the witches had done in the past at The Gathering. I will say I laughed, I cried, I wanted to throw something and then I might have cried a little more. I was on edge waiting to read what would happen next. I really can not wait to see what Chandelle has in store for us in the next set of books.

Not awful...some scenes were epic in drama, emotion, but repetitive details...

...Really were noticeable. As in, "Christmassy scent." What made Bettina think it was " Christmassy?" That drove me crazy through all twenty-two instances that Bettina "thought" how Jackson smelled. Alternative descriptions surely could have been substituted?

All in all, an interesting and.quite intriguing plot. I enjoyed the mysteries and surprises thrown in (I guessed who Hope and Haven really were quite early in the book, and wasn't surprised how that turned out (but the detailed reveal was well written!)

A very solid book, with some minor personal pet peeves that were totally personal, and not a bad writing thing. I'm sure there are readers who aren't bothered by the same things I am, so I definitely don't begrudge recommending this series. Good job actually. Three point five stars.

I absolutely loved this series!

I really liked both Betina and Jackson, though he really managed to annoy me sometimes with his hot and cold attitude, especially in the first book.

Because this series took place after the events of Elemental Magic, which I haven't read, there were a lot of old characters that just appeared out of the blue, leaving me a bit confused... Also, why were some of their names so similar, ughhh!

Still, after a while (in the forth/fifth book) I started to get used to them and their dynamics, and it was interesting seeing our MCs trying to fit in with the group, though they often felt more like outsiders to me, which I supposed was to be expected at the time...

The only major problem, in my opinion, was Tegan. Sometimes it felt like she was the main character, instead of Betina.

Make no mistake, though, this series was an absolute roller coaster, with plot twists left and right that will enthrall you till the very end.

Top Notch World Building

Chandelle LaVaun is one of the best Authors I've ever come across. I've read a LOT of books, by a LOT of authors, and very, very few can even hold a candle to Chandelles' world building and character development!

Her characters are well written, realistic personalities that you get to see develop through out the stories, and the plot twists NEVER. STOP. COMING! She keeps you on your toes! This is the second season in her Coven series, Elemental Magic is the first season, and I can tell you as someone who is on her 10th + reread of this series, it is ALL well written.

The first 3 seasons are complete and available in omnibus form (think volumes, more than one book included) and season 4 is ongoing, there's 4 Novellas and 2 companion stories all of which are just as enticing as the rest of the series!

If you're looking for your next book addiction, give Chandelle a try!

Amazing series. One of my favourite series ever!

Even though it was obvious to me that Bettina was Jackson's soulmate, as well as Judgement. Also, I thought that "Not today Satan" was waaaaay over used. I was also extremely confused about how Timothy came back ( I thought he was a shadow creeper at first), but that was probably me just being tired from reading this book in a week of late nights.

On the positive side, this series I found hilarious, mainly from the way that Bettina was represented, but help from Royce and Easton making fun of "Tennegan" and Tenn being helplessly in love with her. The chemistry between Bettina and Jackson was amazing, even when they were mad at each other, in fact the chapter that they argued just before they got Michael's sword was the funniest chapters in any book I've ever read!

Overall an amazing book and will definitely be reading it again after I finish the other ones!

Ok so... I really enjooyed the story, how it all got connected, how characters relate to each other, etc...

I love the whole 'girl are badasses' vibe this book has.
However, while i could ignore a couple of things on the first series, this one really overdid things for me.. :(

'My jaw dropped' 100 times!!!
' I gasped' 271 times (the word gasped appears 497 times in this collection)
'My heart sank' 57 times

I am sure there are other examples of this throughout.

If I am being totally honest, this time around i just could not ignore the repetitions, they were just too much for me. Which is sad, cause i really enjoyed the story and the characters, but I found myself getting distracted from the story in a very annoying way too often.

Stumbled across this book as a facebook ad and I am so happy I did .I couldn't stop listening to this book! I was obsessed and stayed up way too late many nights because I couldn't stop! I found myself looking for even brief moments to keep listening and if I wasn't listening I was thinking about the story or the characters. The book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions and I honestly didn't want it to end. It has action, fantasy, romance, mystery, character development, heartbreak, and surprises. Absolutely, amazing! I can't say enough good things, but if you are looking for a series to get lost in, this is worth it!

Really good

I enjoyed the story and the characters. You should read the other series first or you will have trouble keeping track of the plot and characters. I did find things slow in some of the last chapters and some of the obstacles became repetitive, but it was never bad enough to drop the rating a star.

My other observation is more of a note for the editor. Since every chapter is titled with a character’s name, I wish the index included those names instead of just numbers. There are a lot of different characters to keep track of so I found myself frequently looking back at the beginning of the chapter so I could be sure of whose perspective I was reading.

Breathtaking!!!!

Ok, I have to admit it; this is the BEST read for me of 2020!!! Now I just found out that this is the second series in the Coven world, but you don't totally get blindsided by information that your post before you start. I love TBE take on magic, soul mates , Covens and all that jazz! Just do yourself the favor of getting all Chandelle's books and emerge yourself in her world. I wish I could give her books more tha n five stars, because it would be Five Stars and Five wands!!

Absolutely phenomenal series! Captivating!

I loved everything about this series! The characters are great! The details and descriptions are very well done. There were times I got lost with who was who but it did not take anything away from the story line.
I honestly had a hard time putting these books down. Hours of reading past my bedtime. I would find myself saying “just one more chapter”. 10 chapters later I would reluctantly close the book.
I look forward to all the other series from this author.
Fantastic imagination! Captivating story!

Entertaining but not overly impressive

Seriously if I have to hear the word "fisted" one more time.......would have been fine if it was just one character or somethings ng but characters never grabbed, grasped, or clutches Everytime it was fisted- fisted his shirt, fisted her hair, etc. just way overused. Also scrubbed the face. Why is everyone scrubbing their face so much? Do they have skin left? Otherwise pretty fine read, definitely feels young adult but entertaining enough and a fun couple days.

Very Long

The first three books were fun and interesting but I really lost interest after the battle with Joseph and Trey . Too much time spent writing about Tennessee remembering his mother Ruth when he was 5 . Maybe I am remembering my unhappy past with my mother who was also named Ruth. Also too many unnecessary characters. The characters should help to build the story too many characters slow the rhythm. Too much writing spent on Jackson searching for his soulmate after all he was only 17.

Excellent

A fantastic page turner with nonstop action with the forces of evil fighting against the good witches
First time reading this author and she is very talented in building her characters, plots and worlds
You fall in love with the main heroes and female heroines
They are all badasses and full of banter and family love with each other
This is a set and I loved every book and the last one about Bettina, Jackson and Tennessee was the icing on the cake, tied it all together nicely and gave you the ending you crave
Great job Chandelle
Onto another novel of yours

Special author equals excited reader

I loved the first set of the coven so then I had to read the books in the Academy. Take the time to read this set especially since there are soulmates in real life. I married mine ,so this story brought everything back so strong ,and I’m not a youngster at all but I love witches and magic in books .so regardless of your age ,try reading this series.

Best friends and family reunited

Travel through The Old Lands, fight demons and shadow people, ride a dragon, all this after finding out she is a witch! Bettina was raised human, but not long after her bestie, Tegan, moved away, Bettina found out that she is a witch and heads to Edenburg for training. Surprises, adventure, mega action , and, of course, MAGIC from page one , and one result is the reunion of a brother and sister.

My progress shows that I finished this series, but I did quit after about the first 1-1/2 books. It is well written and well edited, it just didn't 'grab' me after the first book. Possibly because I'm a bit tired of the YA genre and how teenagers can suddenly do all these amazing things. But, the series has been highly rated by others, so if you like YA, as I said, it's well-edited and easy to read, give it a shot.

Another Wonderful Adventure!

Like all the books from this writer one once started this is most likely read with haste no peaking a the ending. You will spoil the book. I have read this series several times now one perk of having Myalgia Encephalomyelitis . Memory loss sucks other than this situation. Have fun and walk slowly through the book to enjoy each and every event. Býe for now x

Okay, the story to these books is great - it’s an easy read but still really entertaining and while there’s a lot taken from other sources she hangs a lantern on it so you know it’s an homage and not straight up plagiarism. You really end up loving the characters, their pain is your pain, their joy is your joy. They’re fully fleshed out and she does a wonderful job of switching thought styles with character perspectives so even when you’re desperate to start the next chapter and the character changes you NOTICE and don’t have to backtrack to read who’s perspective it switched to.

My one HUGE issue, and the only reason the series isn’t getting 5 stars, is the constant “will they, won’t they” between romantic partners.
Tegan and Tenn.
Emersyn and Deacon.
Bettina and Jackson.

One was enough. Seriously.

Well written but more YA with teenage characters, soul mates , angsty relationship drama. Just not for me. I felt there was too much relationship drama. The story was interesting and you get the entire series in one volume. Each individual book ended with a story continuation, so this is the best way to get the entire series. I didn't read the first series so was not familiar with returning characters. The author did not info dump the first series background stories which I appreciated.

Great Follow Up

I read this series immediately after the first, which is surprising, because usually after a series, I take break because little things in the series annoy me or I am bored and want to change it up… but this follow up was as page-turning, can’t put down as the first! Great writing kept the story moving and going back to fill-in the previous story. I am not typically a YA reader but I am totally captivated by this writer!

The best of the best!!!!

It was very good reading from start to finish, and I couldn't stop reading until I got to the next chapter or book. Then all I wanted to do was get to the next chapter or book to see what was going to happen next. Sometimes I was up half the night reading, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
