This was an excellent compilation and commentary upon quotations from Reformed authors on the topic of infant baptism. Watson, in effect, made all the paedobaptists argue with each other.
Watson shows that the justification for infant baptism through church history (and Reformed history) is so utterly diverse and conflicting that it seems as if infant baptism is a doctrine in search of a theology—a practice in search of a text.
I sympathize with Watson when he bemoans how paedobaptists expect converts to be persuaded by such complicated and abstruse arguments: “Outer circle! Inner circle! Vital sphere! External sphere! We are beginning to get dizzy! We are not sure if we are in two dimensions or three! If we find this so hard to follow, we pity the new convert from paganism.”
