Izzy is really pleased to have been put in charge of the new girl at school. Matilde is French, and Izzy and her friends can't wait to show her their den and its moth, and to help her avoid school dinners (also known as poison). But Matilde LOVES school dinners and even has seconds! And that's when they know. Matilde is a spy and she has come to find out their secrets. They must stop her before it's TOO LATE!!!
As a child, Pamela was lucky enough to grow up in a house full of pets and go to a primary school where lots of spooky and weird things happened (well, in her imagination at least). As a student, Pamela’s student jobs included: fishwife, teaching basketball in America, phlebotomist and Artist Liaison for a (really bad) Abba tribute band. Now, when she’s not writing or going out and about meeting readers, Pamela teaches philosophy to teenagers.
Her top selling stories include The Spy Who Loved School Dinners which won the Blue Peter Best Story Award and My Head Teacher is a Vampire Rat which won The Children’s Book Award. Two of her books, Petunia Peri and There’s a Werewolf in My Tent, were shortlisted for the Lollies – the Laugh Out Loud Awards.
Pamela lives in Dundee with her baby boy and their two awesome cats, Bear & Carlos. If she wasn’t working as a writer and a teacher she’d like to open a luxury hotel for stray cats.
My parents picked this up for my 10 year old boy, but regretted it a little after flicking through because they thought it was 'too girly'. He enjoyed it, despite most of the characters (other than 1 friend of the main character and a mum's bf) being female. I'm not sure quite what age it's aimed at - I read it to him as a bedtime story, but I know he could have read it himself. I just don't know if he would have been interested enough in it to do so. As a parent reading it, I actually quite enjoyed it. It was amusing enough to keep me from being bored. I may have to go find the previous book with the same characters now.
A quick easy read - picked for my Chatterbooks for 'spy month'. Butchart has captured Izzy's 'voice' really well. The kids' imaginations get them into all sorts of silly situations, but from the child's POV, they are perfectly logical and believable. A fun story.
So funny and amusing even for parents. Last night, I found my 7-year old daughter under the blanket with a torch reading another book from this series secretly while her bed time had passed. And my 5-year old son made me read the book for him in past hour keep poking me constantly
This is a really fun story about friendships and how people are not always what they seem. I loved Susan Calman's narration, she really brought it to life!
This rather funny tale, is about a girl called Izzy, her friends and a French spy called Mathilde. Izzy is excited when she is asked to look after the new French student Mathilde but Mathilde isn't very friendly and ignores Izzy and her friends. When they see how much Izzy loves school dinners even having seconds, they know something must be wrong with Matilde, she is a spy! The book follows the mystery of why Mathilde is spying on their school. Each chapter comes up with a new theory of what Mathilde really is doing at their school and how they can stop her!
This book allows young readers to use their imagination coming up with their own ideas of what Mathilde is doing at the school. It has a lovely heartwarming ending to the story. I would suggest this book was for children aged 5-8. Because of the small chapters I think this book would be great to read out loud in the class as it has good size chapters, a suspenseful storyline and would appeal to the whole class.
I was really not expecting to enjoy this but it was thoroughly enjoyable, had a really great understanding of how children think and speak and was generally a feel good read with some laugh out loud moments and a few poignant asides.
Fun school-based story with clubs, friendship issues, misunderstandings and a great bit of mystery surrounding the new French girl who they think is a spy, in no small part because she actually likes the school dinners! Will be recommending it for confident readers in my girls' school library.
In this book, Izzy and the gang welcome new girl, Mathilde a French girl into their class and friendship group.
However as she never speaks and seems to love their gross school dinners not to mention gets transported to and from school in a limo, the gang grow suspicious about just who she is...
A school inspector in disguise?
A spy?
Who knows?!
This was a fun story even though the plot as per usual is because the gang blow the truth out of proportion!
My seven year old enjoyed reading this with me. I think it would have worked better if she’d read the first of the series before this, but she was able to follow the characters and plot without it. I wasn’t really sure how much of the plot my daughter was following, some of the humour seemed to rely on the reader realising how preposterous the children’s ideas are, but she seemed to find it fun and engaging. She’s happy to continue to read more of this series.
This was a really cute, quick funny read, that was a treat to read. The one issue I had with the book is that the author wrote the children as if they had no intelligence at all. For example when the children are surrounded by food but somehow they think they are going to starve to death 🤷🏼♀️. I think the author could have given the children some credit
I realise it's supposed to sound like it was written by a 6 year old but really, I don't feel it models good writing to children. It doesn't have to be Shakespeare but this is just so terrible it's awkward to read. It's really letting down the story. I like simple English for younger readers but this is poor English. Wish we'd never started it.
Great wee childrens book. Listened to this on voxblock!
Would have been 5 stars but there was a part where the protagonists Dad says he's never had haggis...I live in Scotland and I don't know a single man who hasn't had haggis. Its a regular part of the diet. And everyone I know has at least tried it.
Still great though. The narration by Susan Caiman was perfect too.
This book is a good book for 10-14 year olds . It is about a school friend group get a new student at their school, however she’s not very normal. Everyone hates the school dinners ( Shepard’s pie) but all of a sudden they see her go up for more? Follow them on the journey of finding out why she is suspicious!

These stories are proper little lols. I love how highly illustrated they are, and how the friends are always scheming and reading into something that just isn’t there. When a new girl starts, she’s suspected of being a spy… cause no one likes school shepherds pie right?! Properly made me smile this!
To książka, po której nie spodziewaj się niczego wyjątkowego, a jednak prawdopodobnie dziecko z pierwszych klas szkoły podstawowej ją polubi.
To jedna z książek z serii o grupie przyjaciół z klasy, którzy mają bardzo wybujałą wyobraźnię i wszędzie widzą intrygę i kłopoty. Przynajmniej się nie nudzą!
LOVED IT. This book was so funny there was a few moments where I laughed out loud ! Although this book is written from an eight year olds point of view and I am probably much too old for it I will be reading the others in the series.
I read this with my 6 year old boy and we spent the whole book in fits of laughter! Fantastic book as a read-aloud read-together option. The author perfectly captures the child thought processes that lead to misunderstanding. Great characters. Hilarious ice cream van episode. Highly recommended!
Another very funny read in the baby alien series! This time the group of school pals are hot on the heels of a French spy. Alot of planning, fainting and secret den meetings help in solving this mystery. Loved the illustrations
