It all started when he tripped me during the game.
It wasn't a big deal. Just a game. Then it happened again.
Back then, I didn’t know anything about this mysterious, unfairly hot baseball player. Back then, he was just some random jock that showed up out of nowhere and crashed my family’s beach vacation. Back then, I thought he was nothing but a shallow dude-bro, thinking he could smooth things over.
I didn’t know (or like) a lot of things about Justin when we met. But I knew one thing for sure:
Steven was playing with family members in a game of volleyball when he was suddenly tripped, supposedly by accident. The new guy who joined them, Justin, apologized. But then it happened again, and this time he could see the smirk. Was he flirting? In the meantime, his highly competitive dad was not happy that Steven couldn’t stay on his feet long enough to return the ball! And his sister, Stephanie, was flirting with the guy too – eww! With Steven so distracted, they ended up losing the game and his father was angry, stomping over instead to poke a stick at the fire and cook the food. His father sent him over to ask Justin to eat with them, not to be nice but to keep an eye on him since he was flirting with Stephanie. But Justin said he had to go and would see them tomorrow for another game.
When Justin got back home, his twin brother Zach was playing a video game. Zach hated going out in the sun. They were very different in temperament. Justin followed rules, worked and studied hard, was intent on winning, a 4.0 GPA. Zach was more laid back, artistic like their mom, and had no plans for college at all. Their mother doted on him, listened to his every word, laughed at every joke he deadpanned. Justin tripping Steven had only been so that Steven would look at him. He wanted Steven’s eyes on him, no matter how he made that happen.
Stephanie and Steven watched the rain and decided to take a walk to town to get some good coffee. Stephanie was glum because she wouldn’t see the cute guy from yesterday. And Steven was glum because he wanted to experience real lasting love but knew that was only for straight people like his mom and dad who adored each other. He wanted something special that was worthwhile, not a one-night fling. Even seeing the pain his sister was in after her recent break-up was still “living” and he wanted to live too, even with a little pain every now and then. Sitting outside of the coffee shop watching the beach, Justin came up with his brother and mom. As Justin thought would happen, Stephanie was perfect for his brother and they got along well. And Steven was glad to get to get to walk alongside Justin as his mom invited them to their home. When Justin showed Steven his room decorated with baseballs, he felt embarrassed. But Steven turned with a huge smile and said, “Nice!” And with that acceptance, Steven was looking at him and for the first time, he felt “seen”.
In the middle of the volleyball game, Justin just stopped and headed for the ocean. Steven followed and sat in the wet sand until Justin came out of the water and sat next to him. They talked a little, Justin even tried to kiss him but Steven jerked backward, and they walked back to the game. Stephanie and Zach had left together. So Justin walked back home alone. Steven thought about the kiss, but he would be leaving at the end of the week. He wouldn’t ever see Justin again. And he didn’t want just a quick fling.
This was an intense story, filled with roiling emotions as both Justin and Steven wrestled with their own issues. There is no doubt at all that the characters in this story are fantastic. Each one brought their own pain with them, just needing to find understanding. Would they come back and open up just a little? Or were they giving up too soon?
Okay, this book had a few interesting twists and turns.
First off, Steven and his sister Stephanie were both interested in the same guy. OMG! Lucky for Steven, Justin only had eyes for him. The constant teasing reflected as much during a game of volleyball. Unfortunately, their side lost the game. His dad was not amused, but Justin and Steven seemed fine with it. After a dinner invitation that gave these two guys a chance to spend a little more time together, Steven decides to take a dip in the ocean. Justin follows and waits for him to sit next to him on the sand. One thing leads to another and the two share a kiss. Well...almost. Steven seemed to have panicked and jerked away. Imagine the confusion this move left.
Justin left and returned home alone. Steven was left to think about his decision. What was he to do? Did he want something more? A fling was not in the cards for him. Only time would tell. Unfortunately, he did not have the luxury of time on his side.
Another great story with main characters. The supporting characters were just as outgoing in this book.
