Violet's mum hasn't been herself for a while. A few too many glasses of wine in the evening. Mornings when she can't get out of bed. Now Violet's the one looking after her little brother and looking out for empty bottles in Mum's bag. But it's just another little blip. Mum will be fine again soon. She has to be ... How long do blips last for? Bestselling author Eve Ainsworth tackles the difficult subject of alcohol addiction in this stark, honest and deeply moving novella. Particularly suitable for struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers aged 13+
This is a very realistic take about how one struggles with alcoholism and the impact that it has on loved ones. I felt for Violet and could understand her thought process + decisions. The story was heartbreaking and there were often times that I felt so angry at Violet's mother.
Violet’s mum drinks a little bit too much but it’s just a temporary thing, she’s just going through a hard time. Or that’s what Violet thinks until one day things come to a head and she realises her mum is in fact an alcoholic. An upsetting read in a way because you do completely empathise with this teenager who is struggling to do well at school at the same time as being put in the position of being a ‘parent’ to her younger brother but ultimately it is a hopeful story that shows that adults have problems too and must learn how to cope with them.
Alcoholism is a disease. And this book made me sad. I feel for the kids. I had to go through social workers as a kid, and I know what it feels like to tell lies to keep your family together. But just like in this mini book, sometimes lies aren't enough. I just wished there was enough love in this book to believe they'd stop drinking. Wasn't very convincing.
a great read on acoholism and how it affects people in day to day life . very easy fast read with a devestating ending and i really did feel for violet and i understand why shes did what she did . and i love the charctor of freddie i do wish we got more back story of the mums and steves relation ship tho
A realistic portrayal of a mom's alcholism and how it affects everyone around her, particularly her daughter left to pick up the pieces to her own detriment. It made me feel ill, particularly the climax.
This book was so short finished it in less than a day. Was so invested in the story. Personally hate when my parents drink, they're not alcoholists but the smell and how they act after sickens me. Wanted to see if their mom fully recovered at all.
