I love the writing of Tess Gerritsen and have read virtually everything she has ever released so it was inevitable that I would get round to reading this book. I enjoyed it and it was fairly well written but if I am honest it's wasn't at the same high standard of most of her other books. Not sure if it's one of her early books written before she established herself but there was something not quite right.
Simon Dance, alias Geoffrey Fontaine, fakes his death in a hotel fire in Berlin. His wife of two months, Sarah, is told of his death by State Department agent Nick O’Hara but she is not convinced he is dead and feels sure that he is still alive. Sarah with the help of Nick try to unravel the mystery in an effort to find her husband.
The book is full of action lots of twists and turns, a little romance and certainly enough to satisfy fans but it is not her best work.

Życie Sarah Fontaine właśnie wywróciło się do góry nogami. Jej mąż zginął tragicznie podczas podróży służbowej, jednak nie jest to jedyny wstrząs dla młodej wdowy. Mężczyzna miał przebywać w Londynie, a zginął… w Berlinie. Skąd ta rozbieżność? Czy na pewno chodzi o tego Geoffreya Fontaine'a? Kiedy kobieta zaczyna drążyć temat okazuje się, że chyba jednak nie miała pojęcia, za kogo wychodzi za mąż. Do jakich tajemnic dotrze Sarah?
I kim będzie jej obowiązkowy nowy wybranek? :) Romans tym razem jakiś taki mniej ognisty, chociaż oczywiście miłość od pierwszego wejrzenia jest jak najbardziej. Nudy, panie.

Pod koła samochodu Catherine Weaver wpada człowiek. Kiedy udaje jej się dostarczyć mężczyznę do szpitala, ma nadzieję, że to już koniec tej przykrej historii. Nic bardziej mylnego – to dopiero początek! Victor Holland jest bowiem zamieszany w bardzo poważne sprawy dotyczące broni biologicznej. Gdyby posiadane przez niego dane ujrzały światło dzienne – wybuchłaby afera światowa. Kiedy wokół Catherine zaczynają ginąć ludzie, do kobiety dociera, w jakim niebezpieczeństwie się znalazła. Jakie szczęście, że jest przy niej przystojny Victor, w ramionach którego będzie mogła odnaleźć pocieszenie!
Kolejne wczesne romansidełko sensacyjne w wykonaniu Gerritsen. Schemat ten sam, więc może chociaż ja już nie będę się powtarzać!
Nadrobiłam wszystkie starocie Tess, teraz mogę już spać spokojnie! :) I czekać na kolejny tom z serii Rizzoli & Isles.

It was an OK read but not one of her best. There were a few twists and turns but they weren't really surprises and it seemed a bit Mills & Boon'ish in places, I found the main female character quite annoying after the first few chapters.

I didn't get very far with this book as it is, quite frankly, the most sloppily written load of old tosh I have ever wasted my time on.
Informing a woman of her husband's death by telephone? Ordering her to attend an interview the following morning? Cobblestoned London streets? 'Serving girls' in London pubs? I suppose one should feel grateful she stopped short of using the word 'wench'! To say nothing of the first flowers of early spring jostling along with cottage gardens rioting with cornflowers and marigolds. I could go on, but my blood pressure won't take it.
Why did Gerritsen write this story? Were financial considerations to the fore? Did she even pause to read what she had written before sending it off to the publisher?
There is no doubt that this is a mystery story, though not the sort of mystery I was hoping for!

Ostatnio przesłuchałam tyle książek, które mnie zwyczajnie rozczarowały albo zawiodły, że to było jak powiew świeżości. Taki głupi, przewidywalny, ale jednak i doskonale się bawiłam.

Sara ir Džefris Fonteinai visai neseniai susituokė, tačiau netrukus vyrui teko išvykti į darbo komandiruotę. Vieną naktį Sara sulaukia vėlyvo ir visai nelaukto skambučio - moteris sužino, kad jos sutuoktinis žuvo per gaisrą. Našlė nėra linkusi tuo tikėti, bet taip mano ne ji viena - Nikas O'Hara iš Valstybės departamento taip pat netiki šia mirties versija. Ar gali būti, kad Džefris išties gyvas?
Neabejoju, kad trilerių mėgėjai puikiai žino autorę Tess Gerritsen. Asmeniškai aš, nors ir karts nuo karto paskaitau trilerius, dar nebuvau skaičiusi nei vienos šios rašytojos knygos. Todėl pamaniau, kad būtų puiku pažintį pradėti nuo romantinio trilerio, kuris buvo užsistovėjęs tarp neperskaitytų knygų. Manau, kad neklydau. Nors labai didelio įspūdžio ši knyga nepadarė, tačiau nereikia tuo stebėtis - tai nėra visiškas trileris, kuriame slypi tik veiksmas ir paslaptys, ne, tai trileris, persipynęs su romantiniais epizodais, dalykais.
Kalbant apie herojų charakterius, na, Sara mane erzino. Net labai. Toks neįdomus, pilnai neišplėtotas personažas ji man pasirodė. Negana to, mano nuomone, ji pasižymėjo labai nelogiškais ir net vaikiškais sprendimais tokioje situacijoje, nes vis dar buvo „pametusi“ galvą dėl savo naujojo sutuoktinio. O štai Nikas O'Hara man pasirodė daug žavingesnis ir įdomesnis, sakyčiau, gal net rimtesnis personažas, turintis tam tikrų praeities paslapčių ir šmėklų. Gal šiek tiek suerzino jo toks staigus susižavėjimas Sara, bet, ką jau čia padarysi, kad meilė gimsta iš pirmo žvilgsnio...
Kodėl nepadarė labai didelio įspūdžio? Nežinau, bet manęs neįtikino pati istorija ir kai kurie motyvai, tikėjausi kažko tai stipresnio. Nors buvau „visa galva pasinėrusi“ į siužetą, jutau įtampą, o puslapiai vertėsi akimirksniu, vis dėlto, jaučiau, kad tai - vietomis truputį „perspaustas“ reikalas, o kai kur nuo banalumo norėjosi „pavartyti“ akis... Reziume, šią knygą galėčiau pavadinti greitu ir neįpareigojančiu skaitiniu, kai nesitiki kažkokio wow, bet perskaitai tikrai nenuobodžiai ir ne per prievartą.
Apibendrinant, rekomenduoju, jeigu mėgstate romanus, kurie nėra saldūs, o turintys intrigų, paslapčių ir veiksmo, tačiau prie viso to nestokoja įvairių meilės kelių, romantiškų akimirkų. Be abejo, ši knyga turėtų patikti visiems Tess Gerritsen kūrybos gerbėjams. Aš taip pat nekantrauju su šia autore susipažinti plačiau. Knygų lentynoje turiu dar vieną romantinį trilerį, neabejoju, kad ateityje čiupsiu ir kitokio stiliaus trilerį, parašytą šios autorės. Tačiau, žinoma, turiu perspėti, kad, jei mėgstate šiurpius ir, siužeto prasme, labai stiprius trilerius, ši knyga jums greičiausiai nepatiks.

Call After Midnight is the third stand-alone novel by popular author, Tess Gerritsen. The action starts with Simon Dance, alias Geoffrey Fontaine, faking his own death in a hotel-room fire in Berlin. When his wife of two months, Sarah, is notified of the death in a late-night call by State Department employee Nick O’Hara, she is convinced it is a mistake. By the time Nick O’Hara has shared with her the facts he has learned, Sarah realises she really did not know her husband at all. A haunting phone call from Geoffrey sends her to London, where the mystery deepens. This is another Gerritsen novel with plenty of plot twists to keep the reader guessing. The action moves from Washington DC to London, Berlin and Amsterdam. Police, CIA, FBI and the State Department are all involved. There are car chases, fights on trains, torture by knife and scrambles across rooftops. The plain but plucky heroine finds herself accused of murder, sleeping in a windmill and on display in an Amsterdam brothel. Romance, action, violence and a few hot sex scenes are all part of the mix. Gerritsen does romantic intrigue well, and this early novel is just a taste of her later work. A page-turner.

I’m a big Tess Gerritsen fan, and I’m always happy to dive into more of the author’s work. In the wait between new releases, I like to work on the author’s backlist. With Call After Midnight, we have one of Gerritsen’s earliest works.
Call After Midnight certainly had me hooked throughout. I was happy to turn the pages, curious as to how the story would play out. Things were predictable, some aspects required the suspension of belief, but it was an addictive read. In many ways, I would label this an easy read.
If you’re a fan of Gerritsen, it’s interesting to read this one to see how she’s grown as an author. If you’re looking for a place to start, Call After Midnight is addictive but it does not show the author at her best.

Desde luego, si hay algo que se le puede reconocer a esta autora, es que sabe cómo cerrar una novela.
Sus obras posteriores me gustaron mucho más que estas iniciales. Menos... ingenuas. Pero ya entonces se las arreglaba para estos subidones finales de morderte las uñas, marca de la casa. Es importante, siempre lo digo, porque es el sabor que te queda al cerrar el libro y eso tiende a mejorar tu percepción de él.
Una novela algo ingenua, pero entretenida, con un estupendo final. Destripadoras

That was my second Tess Gerritsen novel, but I must say, that the first one was so much better. Call After Midnight is one of her first novel and unfortunately we can see that in the book. The intrigue and plot are not so bad themselves, but characters and their love to each other is unbelievable. So after your husband die, you see another men twice - one at his office and later at the funeral and you already have feelings for him? I don't think so. Still, it's a very fast read, great when you are travelling or don't have much time.

An early adventure/romance from Gerritsen where the adventure is okay, but the romance is grade Z awful. She had characters passing complicated messages with their eyes. Just try that sometime. There was little above seventh grade romance. None of it rang true. Thank God she became a good adventure novelist and forget most of the romance.

I liked this book. I loved the espionage & CIA related incidents in the book. I was a racy book & I could hardly put it it down. I loved the ending, it was very touching. It shows that even spies, hit men & sharp shooters have a life & a human side to them. I loved the character Helga the best, even though she only appeared in the book for a short while.

A dated suspense romance from one of my favorite authors at the beginning of her career. She wrote these romances before she wrote her popular suspense series. It was old so it was dated, but still a good read. If you like a damsel in distress, come to the rescue story give it a try!

Cliche ridden romance masquerading as a spy novel.
Sarah Fontaine learns of the death of her new husband in a fire in Berlin. A US Department representative, Nick O'Hara, gets in touch with the news but then there seems to be a suggestion that his death was not an accident and that her husband was not who she thought he was.
What follows is a chase round Europe with Sarah and Nick searching for answers about Geoffrey Fontaine and the secrets he kept. They are stalked along the way by a creepy agency bent on destroying anyone associated with Fontaine, for reasons that become clear through the story.
This had the makings of a good spy novel, but, unfortunately, the plot had Sarah, a biologist, and Nick, a diplomat and administrator, in ridiculously dangerous scenarios whilst falling in love with each other. Just too outrageous to be in anyway believable.

Call after midnight was my first encounter with the writing of Tess Gerritsen. Hence I do not have any point of reference to compare this novel to her standard of work, and have read that some readers deems this not her best work. I nevertheless found it interesting, with plot twists to keep you guessing, and a good love story as an added bonus.

Ir įžengia į uždraustą teritoriją...
Kiekvienam trilerių ir detektyvų mėgėjui Tess Gerritsen vardas neabejotinai girdėtas dešimtis kartų. Nors skaičiau tiek daug liaupsių šiai autorei, kiek jos knygų kiekvienas prikaupęs, savo lentynoje, deja, turėjau tik šią ploną knygutę, tad nebuvo kito pasirinkimo, kaip tik pažintį su autore pradėti nuo jos – „Skambutis po vidurnakčio“.
Ar patiko? Ir taip, ir ne. Ar po šios knygos pamilau Tess Gerritsen? Tikrai ne. Ar skaitysiu kitas jos knygas? Be abejonės.
Žinau, kad greičiausiai tai mano kaltė, jog pažintį su autore pradėjau nuo lengvo, svorio neturinčio romano, bet manęs tikrai nesužavėjo. Nesakau, kad buvo blogai, nes tikrai taip nebuvo, bet man visas siužetas pasirodė pernelyg paviršutiniškas, banalokas ir vietomis net su sunkiai paaiškinamu veikėjų elgesiu...
Kodėl prakalbau apie veikėjus? Nes Sara, kuri kaip pagrindinis personažas turėtų dominti skaitytoją, kurstyti smalsumą ir vedžioti už nosies, toli gražu tokia nebuvo. Jos charakteris sukurtas su daug klišių, banaliai ir labai infantiliai. Nepatiko man ji, nors tu ką. Daug kur varčiau akis ir galvojau, kodėl jos poelgiai tokie kvaili, o pasirinkimai sveiku protu nepaaiškinami.
Kita vertus, Nikas – visiška Saros priešingybė. Žavingas, paslaptingas ir kurstantis smalsumą kiekviename žingsnyje. Vyras iš didžiosios V – viską apgalvojantis ir viliojantis savo protu bei įžvalgumu.
Galbūt kitiems tokia veikėjų priešprieša atrodys logiška ir žavės, deja, manęs, neįtikino. Nesupratau autorės motyvo sukurti šiuos du personažus kardinaliai skirtingus, nes pasakojimo, mano nuomone, tai visai nepagyvino ir jokios kitos papildomos naudos nedavė.
Kad „Skambutis po vidurnakčio“ neabejotinai patiks „priėdusioms velnių“ romantikėms – faktas. Kad patiks lengvų, neįpareigojančių ir ne žiaurių trilerių gerbėjoms – irgi faktas. Dar vienas faktas – autorę verta pažinti iš visų pusių – ne tik tą stiprią ir svarią jos pusę, bet ir tą krislelį romantikės bei svajoklės, kuri, tikiu, tūno kiekvienoje iš mūsų. Juk pripažinkim, kad ir kokias kietas ir nepažeidžiamas vaidinam, kiekviena giliai širdyje trokštam to paties. Paskaitykit, gal netyčia patiks!

Na ogół nie czytam thrillerów szpiegowskich (przynajmniej to mi tak wyglądało) i po tę książkę sięgnęłam dość spontanicznie i... aż tak tragicznie nie było, ale też mnie nie powaliło.
Jest tu bardzo wyraźny wątek miłosny, więc czy to komuś pasuje, czy nie to kwestia indywidualna, ale chyba nigdy w żadnej dotychczas przeczytanej przeze mnie książce ten wątek nie zaczął się tak szybko i to w tak niezbyt przyzwoitych okolicznościach. Jest też potraktowany bardzo prosto, niemal jak w telenoweli. Zakochanie od pierwszego wejrzenia (prawie), niedomówienia, złość, szybkie pogodzenie, wielka miłość, kolejne niedomówienia, itd. Nawet bohaterowie trochę jak z telenoweli: ona skromna, niby niezbyt ładna, chociaż każdy wie jak to jest w praktyce, a on całkiem przystojny, ma dość poważne i istotne stanowisko... Miłość jest właściwie głównym motorem napędowym praktycznie wszystkiego w tej historii. Przyznam, że liczyłam jednak na coś zdecydowanie bardziej oryginalnego.
Jestem też pewna, że gdyby powycinać te przemyślenia bohaterów o to czy kochają, czy nie lub te marzenia o sobie, to książka byłaby jeszcze krótsza. Nawet samo zmniejszenie czcionki by ją solidnie skróciło. Te nasze 256 stron jest do pochłonięcia w parę godzin.
Plusem jest na pewno to, że akcja postępuje szybko. Nie ma przesadnego rozwodzenia się, piekielnie długich opisów, coś się ciągle dzieje. Coś.
Jednak ciągle się zastanawiałam nad wiarygodnością historii. Chodzi mi konkretnie o prędkość namierzania innych, bo odnosiłam wrażenie, że każdy ma podsłuch absolutnie wszędzie, przy każdym telefonie w każdym wielkim mieście. Jakimś cudem zarówno ci "dobrzy" i ci "źli" potrafili znaleźć naszych głównych bohaterów (i nie tylko) bardzo, bardzo szybko. Nawet, gdy teoretycznie przez przebrania mieli być nie do rozpoznania, to w praktyce i tak każdy wiedział, że to oni.
Książka jest bardzo pospolita z przewidywalnym zakończeniem, ale to dobry odmóżdżacz. Zdecydowanie Gerritsen lepiej wypada przy thrillerach medycznych.

I must say that Tess Gerritsen is one of my favourite authors and “Rizzoli and Isles” is one of the best series I’ve read in crime fiction genre.
“Call after midnight” is one of her earlier romantic thrillers, actually the first book she has written. I would say it’s a fast paced and entertaining espionage thriller, with a touch of romance. It's not particularly gritty or realistic but it's quite good fun but still, far from the Rizzoli and Isles series. I am used on her complex stories, gruesome and gory crime scenes, dark atmosphere and evil villans. Here, more attention seems to be given to the romance side of the story than the crime, with neither aspect really gripping or convincing me. Perhaps it was because the book is also very short, I don’t know. . It misses also a lot of the tension and sense of danger that is so apparent in her later books. Anyway, sometimes you just need a good bit of crime fluff to break up all the heavy reading so it’s good for killing time.
