The Distance Between Us #3

Meet Me in the Middle

Rate this book
Fool me three times…

Dale Ramsey is looking forward to his twenty-year high school reunion except for one small problem: will his old friend – and old flame – be there?

Adam O’Connor has disappeared twice from Dale’s life. Once after a graduation night fling, and again after a hot reunion years later. When he resurfaces this time, single and on the verge of retiring from the Navy, he wants to mend fences with Dale. Mend fences and maybe tear up some sheets.

The spark between them is alive and well, but Dale resists. After all, Adam has only been interested in him before when his life has been in flux, just like it is now, and Dale refuses to be anyone’s placeholder until something better comes along. He wants his friend back, but he’s not looking to be deserted a third time.

Over and over, though, their attempts to rekindle their friendship wind up igniting something much hotter, and Dale’s feelings for Adam are far too strong to ignore. Should he put himself on the line and risk another broken heart? Or should he be the one to walk away this time?

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Hm, so i loved this story. This may get a bit spoilery but here goes my random thoughts on this one. I'm a huge fan of Witt and she did a fabulous job... but a big niggle for me was how hard it was for ME to forgive Adam for letting Dale be second choice and how he KNEW he was gay yet married 3 different women, one whom he technically cheated on with Dale. Hm.

I'd say my biggest UGH WHY?! with this one was that it was one of those sequels that often happens to ruin an HEA for you of a previous couple. The last book left you feeling a commitment, an exclusivity with Kieran and Alex that was heartwarming because Alex had really brought SOMETHING that just made the relationship be enough for them. Where I'm not against open relationships, I dont usually like em in my romance and so continuously shoving it in our face that Ethan, Rhett, Alex and Kieran have been having group sex just really ruined my fairy tale ending for the sake of being kinky. Totally disappointed.

Otherwise I really like this book. I'd recommend it.

I really like this series. I especially like seeing all the other guys again. Some time has passed in this one. Kieran and Alex are planning a wedding, Rhett and Ethan's daughter is all grown up, and the guys (cough*Ethan*cough) are really feeling their ages.

I really don't remember Dale all that much from the previous stories, but I definitely liked his character. He was pining for his best friend for 20 years, ever since their first hookup in high school. Reuniting for another hookup at their 10 year reunion and then meeting again at the 20th, seems things are still the same between them.

While they definitely hook up and have hot sex, it takes them until almost the end to be on the same page. I was getting a bit frustrated with Dale for not sticking up for his own feelings, etc. and just when he is finally ready to lay it all on the line, Adam steps up to the plate.

I guess it is a little understandable Adam is so gun shy since he has had so many failed relationships in the past, but I was glad to watch him realize what was important.

Another solid installment to this series. Now, wonder who is next.

This is the story of Dale and Adam, who were two best friends in high school. They acted on their attraction right after graduation just before Adam left for the Navy. Then they lost contact until their ten-year class reunion where once again they acted on that mutual attraction...then Adam broke Dale’s heart. Now their 20-year reunion is coming up and Dale is determined that history is not going to repeat itself. Of course, it does, and they are left to deal with the aftermath and the knowledge that Adam will be retiring from the Navy soon. They both want to rebuild their friendship, but Dale needs and wants more, he wants and needs to know what happened in the past won’t happen again in their future. This was much less angsty that I thought it would be, and overall, I really enjoyed this book. I loved Adam and Dale’s interactions, yet I found their interactions with Dale’s friends (the couples from the first two books) to be rather awkward. There also wasn't much bonding time between Dale and Adam, so I wasn't surprised that Dale had so much concern when they were apart. It was good to see that Dales friends were there for him and gave him good advice. Adam's speech at his retirement ceremony was what really did it for me as far as raising the rating that I started out with. Overall, it was a fast, sweet read with happy ever after.

I didn't enjoy this very much - mostly because I didn't see the fascination with Adam.

He was described as good-looking, in the Navy and hung. So far, so stereotypical.
But he also had a lot of committment issues and lived most of his life as a straight guy with no outstanding qualities and treated Dale over the course of 20 years not well. I just couldn't understand why Dale was so hung up on him.

Dale was an ok guy, also not the most fascinating main character I ever encountered and I didn't dig the whole "I drink a lot of wine all the time".

So the story stayed kind of bland and uninteresting to me.

The writing was good, so I will go with a "was ok" rating.

I was surprised i didn't need a reread of the books before this one,but i didn't. I easily fell back into the lives of our naughty boys...and boy are they naughty.

Two words: body shots!!!

Of course there is a lot more to the story but that scene struck with me. :-)

Of the three stories in this series, this is the least that I have liked BY FAR! The title of this book is "Meet Me in the Middle," but Dale goes way beyond the middle, and that's where I had a problem with this book because I couldn't buy their relationship. Unbalanced relationships never work. Someone is going to get hurt. Someone is going to feel insecure, and resentment will set in. At 90% of this book Dale was scared and in pain. He still was feeling insecure and was going to have it out with Adam, and that is when Adam does "the big gesture." He states clearly to all and sundry that Adam is the man he loves. Regretfully, by this time that was a little too late for me, and besides I didn't even like him.

If I take this book as a tale of friendship, then it's a pleasant book, but as a romance, for me, it was a failure.

Dale and Adam were best friends in high school and they hooked up after graduation and again after 10 years. Now they see each other at their 20th high school reunion. Despite Dale’s promise to himself that they won’t hook up again they can’t resist each other...

Dale and Adam's story is lovely, romantic and charming. It can be read as a stand alone, but equally it's a nice addition to the loveable characters of the previous books.

I read the previous books a while ago so I couldn't remember every detail, but Lori brings Kieran & Alex and Ethan & Rhett back into the story and I enjoyed their presence. :)

Twenty years. A long time to wait for a man you love to feel the same. Too bad for Dale he only seems to reunite with his high school best friend once every ten years, during their reunions. The guys had sex at graduation and on their ten year reunion. That’s twice Adam has given Dale a taste of love, only to disappear on him. It seems Adam only finds Dale when he’s at a crossroads, when he’s in between being what Dale wishes him to be—true to himself and their love—and having his own life without Dale. It seems also that Dale is nothing to Adam but a doormat, a safe haven during turbulent times. Adam never promises anything, never tells Dale that they’re more than old friends reconnecting briefly. How long does it take for Dale to realize Adam will never acknowledge their love, let alone make a commitment?

This story has a lot to like. First and foremost, the characters of the two men. While we only get the point of view of Dale, that doesn’t mean Adam’s personality remains a mystery. A sense of his honor, fears, attraction, everything that makes him a man, all comes through with every discussion, every touch, every word left unspoken, and the deed that finally gives him peace.

Dale has been in love with Adam his whole life, some of that unaware of the depth of his emotions. Try as he might, he can’t sever their bond as they keep coming back to each other, over and over again. Dale speaks to us a lot, his inner dialogue of emotional turmoil. There were times when I thought the author had already covered this and that, but it only illustrated how Dale is unable to let go of his dream to be with Adam. His frailty, his human weakness, his continuously breaking heart. It’s all right there, palpable, so close. The reader breathes in the same emotions, immersion to the story ensured.

The second best thing about this book isn’t the sex—though those scenes are smoking hot—but the dialogue and the friendships Dale has. This book is filled with conversations. I adore good dialogue, and this story delivers in spades. Everything is put out in the open between Dale and his friends, though he seems tongue-tied about opening up to Adam. Realism exists in every word spoken. Dale’s friends are fun, smart, sexy, real characters. I liked them a lot. I could see why Dale liked hanging out with them.

The third thing about this story I liked was the realism. Dale has a soft spot, a weakness: Adam. Dale doesn’t learn from his mistakes easily, even though he knows Adam doesn’t do commitment, let alone relationships. Yet Dale can’t let go. It broke my heart to see him hurt time and again, but I realized Adam was hurting too, having chosen the easy and the expected route his whole life. He’s never rebelled, not really, never gone after the things he really wants. In that respect Adam’s a lot like anyone really. Pursuing one’s dreams is a challenge because failing can make you lose your inner light. I suppose that’s why it’s wonderful to root for the underdog—or the man who finally stands up for something. Dale’s strength, I think, comes from the unyielding nature of his love for Adam. No other man can hold a candle to Adam, not for Dale, and it’s saddening, and hopeful, and exciting, and loving to see him continue to try and never give up.

All in all, I loved this story. Way too easy to recommend it for everyone who likes realistic romance, and long-term angst and love.

The 3rd book in the Distance Between Us series works as well as a standalone, although you may be initially confused with the mass introduction to the secondary couples.

Dale is debating whether to attend his 20th high school reunion. The big issue is Adam, his best friend from high school. Dale had always had a crush on his presumably straight best friend and on the night of graduation Dale and Adam hooked up. The next time Dale saw Adam at their 10 year reunion, they got together again and things did not go well afterwards. Deciding not to let Adam control the situation, Dale attends with the intent to not let anything happen if Adam is there. Of course Adam is there, looking better than ever, and immediately approaches Dale. One thing leads to another and we get their story as they try to navigate rebuilding their friendship.

Dale's feelings of abandonment and resentment towards Adam were painful and really made me take an initial dislike towards Adam. It takes a while for us to get any real feeling for Adam's situation. A lot of the book revolves around their occasional meet ups (including a wild Vegas bachelor party for Alex and Kieran) and Dale trying to sort out his feelings and what he believes Adam wants from him. The two have smoking chemistry but between a long distance relationship and their history, Dale has to wonder if he can ever be more than friends with the man he has pined over for 20 years.

It was nice catching up with Rhett & Ethan and Kieran & Alex. Dale is a likable character and eventually Adam gets his head together in remarkable fashion.

This is a lovely story about two men who were best friends in high school, fell in love, made love, and then fell apart. They made love when they were 18; it happened again when they were 28; and in the novel, they see each other again at their 20th high school reunion, and the question is whether or not this time, they can get it right. Dale Ramsey fell for his allegedly straight best friend, Adam O'Connor, when they were just kids, and each time they fell apart, the pain was a little bit more intense, so he isn't sure if he is willing to take a chance on Adam when they see each other at their 20th reunion. Adam, however, convinces him that this time, he is worth the risk. It isn't really clear for a long time if he actually is, but watching Adam eventually reconcile himself to his own feelings is a beautiful thing. Watching these two very tentatively, very honestly fumble their way into realizing how much they love each other (well, watching Dale admit that the depth of his feelings never changed, and watching Adam come to grips with the fact that Dale was who he wanted all along), and experiencing in a very palpable way how much they want to be with each other is a joy. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading stories about lovers who need (and earn) their second (or in this case, their third) chances. (Also, for anyone who is a fan of the characters in L.A. Witt's The Distance Between Us universe, this is a nice reunion for those characters, who feature prominently in the book.)

"For God's sake, Dale, do you think I just wanted to use you?" "I don't know if that's what you wanted or not," I said. "But it's what you did. Twice."

Dale and Adam were best friends in school but parted immediately after their first sexual encounter which happened at graduation. They met again at their 10 year school reunion but once again, Adam leaves Dale after making him promises which he doesn't keep. Finally 20 years after their first encounter, they meet again at the school reunion.

I enjoyed this book but not the level of the previous two in the series. I found it difficult to warm to Adam, or to forgive his treatment of Dale. I found it difficult to accept his reasons for leaving Dale each time and I found it really difficult to understand how Dale maintained his desire for Adam after so many years and so much heartache.

All that aside, it is a nicely told tale with some sizzling sex and some romantic moments, definitely redeemed by the grand romantic gesture - I LOVE big, public romantic gestures!

I didn't really feel this book like I did the first two in this series. A rare miss from this author for me.

I don't know, maybe it would have helped to see things from Adam's POV. His feelings were as much as mystery to me as they were to Dale, and Dale deserved better. I totally agreed with what Alex said, it just always felt like Dale was last choice for Adam. Sure, he made a grand gesture there at the end, but it wasn't really enough for me.

Another sweet story. I've really enjoyed this series. The characters are all likeable, honest, and real. Their emotions are raw and the stories are about normal people. Nothing over the top. No characters where I felt like they were fantasy men.

So, I haven’t read the previous two books in this series and I was able to understand and follow just fine, in case anyone was curious. This is the story of Dale and Adam – two high school best friends who acted on an attraction right after they graduated high school and right before Adam left for the military. They lost contact until their ten year reunion where they once again acted on a mutual attraction before Adam crushed Dale’s heart. The time has come for their 20th high school anniversary and Dale is determined not to let history repeat itself.

Of course things do and they are both left to deal with the aftermath and the knowledge that Adam will be retiring from the Navy soon. They definitely want to rebuild their friendship, but Dale needs more, he needs a promise and he needs to know what happened in the past won’t happen in their future.

This was surprisingly less angsty that I thought it would be, certainly more hot than I expected, and overall, I really enjoyed this book. There were some small niggles for me such as I loved, loved Adam and Dale’s interactions, yet I found their interactions with Dale’s friends (the couples from the first two books) to be stilted and awkward. How many times is the reader going to get the same Ethan is old joke? Enough, please. How many times do I need to read about how sexxxxxxy Keiran is or how he turned Alex in to a naughty boy? I get it. Really. How many times am I going to read that Dale wonders if the other two other couples are getting it on behind closed doors and he’s jealous? Jesus, just ask if you can join in! It was repetitious and I just wanted to get back to Dale and Adam.

Another small problem was that I didn’t really get much bonding time with the guys as a couple. Like sure they were best friends twenty years ago, and sure they are IM’ing, Skype’ing, etc. but the reader doesn’t read that many conversations between the two. Although the part where Adam told Dale sometimes people need to take things slow kind of melted me a bit. However, sexually these guys were stupid hot together and I definitely felt a connection with them as a couple there. I liked that they agreed to start out as friends and had small little trips here and there. It’s not that I don’t believe them as a couple; I just wish I’d gotten a tiny bit more.

But this was fast and sweet and hot…I’d read more in this series for sure.

I have been waiting with bated breath for Dale's story in this fifth installment of the 'Wilde's' series by L.A. Witt. Dale has been on the sidelines in the prior two books and I just kept getting the feeling that he was waiting and biding his time before his story. Knowing the prior two books I was positive the writing, the characters, the storyline, and the sex would be amazing. I love it when I'm right!

Dale is Rhett's best friend, a little more flamboyant than the other guys in the series, and heading to his twenty year high school reunion. Ugh. Yeah, I personally haven't attended any of mine and there's a reason for that. But Dale, who had a good high school experience, goes to his twenty-year and if only Adam isn't at this one everything will be fine. Dale is just not that lucky when his best friend all through grade school and high school shows up at the reunion. Adam has made a lot of mistakes in the last two decades. Alienating his best friend and failing at marriage are just two of them. Dale and Adam make it through the reunion, get the argument out of the way, have intense sex, and then they each go home, Dale thinking it's done, they put the past behind them and can move on. Until Adam calls and they make an attempt at being 'just friends'. 'Just friends' becomes friends with benefits and puts Dale in the very difficult place of having to decide what he wants and needs instead of worrying about Adam.

*** 4 Worth the wait stars.***

It's not easy for me to accept Adam in the beginning, knowing how much he hurt Dale in the past. And how much I wanted to slap Dale's head for his doormat attitude for Adam.

But in Adam's situation (even I still wanted to punch him for waiting 'that moment' for too fucking long), I understood.

And thanks to Alex who finally gave some speech to Dale, how to stand on his own feet and stop being a doormat for Adam.
Good thing is, Adam pay it all with his beautiful speech on his retirement day.

Loved this story, though I need some adjustment to understand the guys.
Kieran, Alex, Rhett and Ethan's appearance, cheered me up a bit. Loved you guys!

“They say if you love something, let it go, and if it comes back, it’s yours. But sometimes letting go is a mistake. And sometimes what you love comes back, and comes back again, and then finally gives up and stops coming back before you realize what you had.”
“And in the end, that’s how you lose the love of your life.”

I liked it, but had some niggles I'm struggling to articulate. I'm just not sure how much I ever cared about Dale or Adam, or Dale and Adam together. Not the way I expect to care about characters in an L.A. Witt (or Lauren Gallagher) book.

One of the things I loved in The Closer You Get was that I, as the reader, could see things the narrator was oblivious to. Unfortunately, that sort of showing didn't continue with this book. The resolution at the end struck me as too facile. I realize that we weren't in Adam's POV, but it seemed like something that worked for the plot rather than necessarily making sense for the character.

I dunno... I enjoyed reading it, but I didn't love it. There just didn't seem to be much there there.

I don't know. A big part of me wants to round this down to 2.5 ...or 2...I'm not sure why I won't.
I didn't read the first book of this series, but I did read the second, The Closer You Get and I LOVED it...like 5 star loved it and so this one just fell so completely flat for me and I was horribly disappointed. It did have its moments, don't get me wrong, and I kept on reading, so it held my interest but it was just completely lacking the emotional connection that I wanted. It was just sex. And then he would wonder if it was just sex. and he would say it wasn't, but I didn't feel anything other than the sex. And FYI .
I think a big portion of the problem for me was that this was only from Dale's pov...I could really have used Adam's I think it would have added a lot more to their relationship. Also, it's mentioned that they talk and text and webcam-chat or whatever the hell its called, but we don't really get much of those conversations. We get their...rush to slam each other into the wall and screw--which I enjoy, don't get me wrong...anyhoosals.
There was some genuine awesomeness to the story, some great one-liners, I liked seeing the other characters and their interactions, hello---Body shots!
The sweet, honest "friend" moments were great. I did feel Dale's pain and indecision and there was a point around 70% where I absolutely just wanted to wrap him up and take him home.
So, I'll stick with my 3 star rating...but to be honest it was a let-down after the second book. I will of course continue with this author and will be reading the next book in the series.

3 stars, tops.

I didn't have as high hopes for this as I did for Kiernan's story. I was quite disappointed after finishing the first 30% of the book and the feeling was the same after the last page. The best part was getting a climpse in Rhett and Ethan's life as well as Kiernan and Alex's. <3 I would actually rather have read an honest sequel about how things went for the four of them instead of this story about Dale's troubled lovelife.

The bad: I did not get invested at all with the mc's. Both Dale and Adam stayed distant to me. Dale felt like the world's biggest doormat-whiner at times and Adam was definitely a runnerup for the dumbest selfish-bastard. Sex... it broke the story for me. I needed more substance for the characters, not more fucking. and the arguments they were having at the beginning... there was much said without words and that made me miss the dialoque a miss for me. The ending didn't ring true either for me. I feel like I have read the same ending, the same speech a few times lately and I was just left with MEH- feeling.

I usually really love Witt's stories but this just felt rushed. It did make me want to read The Distance Between Us again :D and that's my goal for tonight: a book that works almost on every level unlike this thin sequel.

I adored this book. Part of the reason, I think, was because I identified so strongly with Dale, his caring a torch for years but knowing Adam was only going to break his heart. And yet, he put himself out there anyway. Ah, yes. I know that gut-wrenching feeling.

Ms. Witt has a way of making her characters *real* and complete and whole people and I was so very happy for Dale and Adam at the end. Good for them! Someone deserves a happy ever after!

While this is the third book in this series, you can read it as a standalone.

reread 4/14/2019 This did not hold up upon reread for me. I could never get over the feeling that the relationship only happened because Adam no longer had anything to lose. Dale came across as a doormat that was unwilling to speak up for himself. Instead, he basically let Adam determine what that relationship would or wouldn't be. not cool

Dale and Adam

Full review on Fiction Vixen Book Reviews

Dale and Adam were best friends in high school. Dale was out and Adam was straight. Dale had become very adept at hiding his feelings for his best friend until the night of graduation and the first time Adam kissed him. Dale thought they were going somewhere but Adam was enlisted so he took his one night fling and left Dale behind.

Fast forward to their ten-year reunion and a similar situation however Adam was married this time. Adam’s marriage was on the outs so he hooked back up with Dale but when the wife called and things were worked out, once again Dale was left with empty promises.

Now it is time for their 20 year reunion and Dale swears he won’t fall into the same trap again but once he sees Adam all of his unresolved feelings come boiling to the surface. Adam wants to talk to him and try to explain but instead of talking they have sex. Same situation, ten years later. This time though Adam wants to try to be friends. He insists that they need to keep in contact so they do. After several times of meeting up and hanging out the sexual tension explodes and they end up right back in bed.

Both men agree that they can try the friends with benefits thing but eventually it becomes too much for Dale. He is in love with Adam and he is tired of that sick feeling he has all of the time. Dale wants more, needs more but he doesn’t know how to tell Adam without completely breaking things off. Adam is retiring and Dale goes to the retirement ceremony as one last time to see him but Adam blows everyone out of the water with a declaration of love for Dale. So sweet in the way it happens, Adam reveals his feelings for Dale and asks him to give them a chance. Since that is all Dale has ever wanted he happily accepts the offer.

Adam has been through several failed marriages so I still have questions about his ability to commit. It almost would have worked for me if he had passed it off as Dale really being the love of his life and all of his marriages had not worked for that reason. I am a sap like that. The second marriage caused Adam to turn his back on Dale at their ten-year reunion so I know that excuse wouldn’t work. It wasn’t said if Adam went back to his wife because of DADT or if he genuinely loved her and wanted to make it work. I got the impression it was more for making it work with his wife which made me doubt Adam’s final declaration of love just a bit. How could he say that he made his biggest mistake in leaving the one that he loved, Dale, yet not pursue anything for 20 years?

I hope Ms. Witt gives us more books in the series, maybe Owen?, so I can have some follow-up on Dale and Adam. The way Adam comes out to everyone was very sweet and I felt like it was what Dale needed at the right time. Overall, this was a good book and I enjoyed it. I always love revisiting Ethan and Rhett; for some reason they really appeal to me. Ms. Witt is consistently one of the best m/m authors for me and this book didn’t disappoint. Final grade- B

Ah - this is a sigh of relief. Why? Because it's a L.A. Witt book, which is exactly written the way I like it.
Okay, maybe not exactly but most of the time. I have to admit that it's been a long time since I've read the other two books and while I still have the fondest memories of Rhett, Ethan, Kieran and *sigh* Alex, I didn't remember Dale. Sorry, Dale. Okay, I still don't remember him in the former books but hey, it really doesn't matter. This book can be read as a standalone.

So - Dale is a friend of above mentioned swoonworthy males, which means in my world he can't be to shabby either. Dale has one problem. Adam. His best friend through school, the guy he had sex only a few days before Adam left for the military, the guy who didn't call, didn't write. The guy with whom he had a hot night at the 10-years-school-reunion and who then left again - of course back to the military but called twice, once to make plans, the second time to tell that he and his wife would try to save their marriage.

Dale has lived his life, he is not a sulking teenager, but this is the one "hook-up" that still hurts, a lot.

Now the 20-year-reunion is coming and Dale is hesitant to go. What if Adam is there? Anticipation and dread are both strong emotions.

Adam is there - and he shows all signs that he is more than interested in Dale again. But Dale is cautios this time. He knows that he would be in for a lot of emotional pain. But hey, their chemistry nearly burnt my kindle.

Now - this is the only part in this story I had a few problems. Adam at first shows all signs that he wants more than a hot night. But in the morning he is also the one who is more hesitant to go further, who wants to stay friends but does not want to pursue a relationship.

You can say that the main conflict of the story is how both guys shy away and get used to the concept of "we want to be, we could be a couple". The whole "let us be just friends" after their hook-up is kind of a strange and really doesn't fit with the the fact that for example Adam actually went to the reunion to see Dale. So - yes, the conflict was kind of strange for me. Partially I understood them but sometimes they acted one way and talked the other.

But....yeah...hot, hot, hot. Okay, and now we talk about the fact again that L.A. Witt can really write sizzling hot sex. Oh yes...and btw. thanks for the information that Kieran hadn't stopped the nice arragement with Rhett and Eathan but that Alex now is part of that, too. So...*puppy eyes*...maybe a short? Something? Anything?

All in all - I was glad to be back in that series and I enjoyed the story and the sex. 4,5 stars

I will be honest, I was NOT happy with this story and I pretty much loathed Adam! I am sure that there are millions of other people out there that blame others for every single bad choice they have made in their lives. Even while trying to attempt to take a bit of the responsibility, Adam still comes off as blaming others. Trust me, there was NOTHING right about the way Adam treated Dale over the years and his little speech towards the end sure didn't make up for everything that came before it. If Dale was smart, no matter how in love he is with Adam, he would run... run as fast as he can from the asshole that just declared his love for him, because trust me... who Adam has been in the past is who he will be in the future... you can't change selfish! He claimed he loved all three of his wives, but he still walked away from them. How can his "love" for Dale be any different? He never once said that the reason his first three marriages didn't work was because he came to realize that it was his love for Dale that made it impossible for him to be with anyone else. He has no redeeming characteristics. He never had to make any compromises. It was always Dale standing back and waiting for Adam to find time in his life for him. When only one person is doing all of the giving and never asking for anything in return for themselves, not to mention is expected to be thankful for the privilege of doing the giving, then that isn't a relationship... it is abuse! Just sayin'!

Yes, this is fiction and anything can happen if you write it that way... but, sometimes even fiction can miss the mark and this story did! IMHO!!!

It would appear that it would have been better for me and this author if I had just skipped this book and went right to the next one in this series... oh well, such is life! *headdesk* :(

"I just need you to know that nothing could ever make me more committed to you than the twenty years I spent without you.”

Twenty years. Would that be considered as a waste of time or unfounded commitment for two used-to-be close friends to be hung up on each other? Were there people patient enough for this sort of not really relationship? Apparently there were at least two here, represented by Dale and Adam.

I don't read the first two books of this series so I don't know anything about Dale and his sometimes way-too-close-to-each-others couples friends Rhett/Ethan and Kieran/Alex. But I like their close friendships in a way they help Dale through his anxiety and uncertainty (though more than once or twice I felt that Dale should stop being such a worrywart, grow some spines, speak up and face the consequences). Adam was a puzzle for me - an almost retired naval officer with three ex-wives. Was he bisexual or a closet case? I thought he felt something for Dale then appeared indifferent and off-putting; as much a box practice target as Dale in my opinion. There were moments when he explained it all (rather Hollywood-like style for me that I dreaded there be An Officer and A Gentleman scene where Richard Gere carried Debra Winger off). But there were none of that (Thank God) and none of the over the top drama. :)

2.5 This book just didn't work for me. It's a shame because I really liked the stories and characters from the previous books in this series, and I usually enjoy this author's books. The story just felt "awkward" to borrow Dale's term. It seemed to move along in fits and starts, which I guess has to do with how Dale and Adam's "relationship" progressed, but it just didn't work as far as storytelling. I never felt like I got to know the characters or even why they were doing their little dance around each other. Their relationship never felt "organic" to me, rather it was forced, which is why Dale kept trying to define it (unsuccessfully), I believe. Also, I got a bit tired of the

It's Dale's turn and I had forgotten how swishy he can be. I love that he is so out and proud. But holding a candle for someone for twenty years? To have found that person and to have let him go, not once, but twice, I don't know if that's selfless or stoopid.

And when Dale reconnects with Adam, oh my the sparks (& more) do fly. But there's got to be more talking boys. That's all I'm saying.

Loved hanging out with all the boys from the previous books. And seeing Ethan and Rhett confront another milestone... that was pretty funny. And the wedding of Keiran and Alex was a nice part of the narrative.

Adam is a funny bloke. All smoldering looks and tight silence. But his grand gesture? Oh, so worth waiting twenty years for. You were right, Dale all along. I just need more faith. You are one brave boy.
