A mystery set in Istanbul.
The synopsis sounded more interesting than the book actually turned out.

Die Protagonistin des Buches ist eine Deutsche und betreibt in Istanbul einen Krimibuchladen. Neben dem Verkauf von Büchern beschäftigt sich sich gerne mit dem Lösen von Kriminalfällen (nicht immer zur Freude der örtlichen Polizei).
Ich fand, das klang doch interessant und habe nach diesem Buch gegriffen.
Bis mindestens zur Hälfte des Buches wäre ich jederzeit gewillt gewesen eine 3-Sterne Wertung zu vergeben.
Das Verhalten der Charaktere erschien mir zwar bisweilen ein wenig merkwürdig, aber ich kann ja nicht beurteilen, ob dieses Verhalten in Istanbul möglicherweise üblich ist. Gut gefallen haben mir die vielen Themen, die im Buch angeschnitten werden: Umweltverschmutzung durch gewissenlose Industrielle, Immigranten aus dem Balkan, die politische Absicht Thrakien stärker zu besiedeln, eine Freiheitsorganisation für Minderheiten in Thrakien nach dem Vorbild der UCK (oder je nach Sichtweise eine Terrororganisation), der gesellschaftliche Einfluss der Religion usw.
Leider verlaufen diese Fäden am Schluss alle im Sande oder werden von der Autorin nur schlampig und äusserst hastig verknüpft.
Daher fällt das Buch für mich in die Kategorie "kann man lesen, muss man aber nicht" und erhält als Wertung nur 2 Sterne.

"جميعنا نعيش الحياة نفسها . مهما كانت حالتنا المادية أو خلفيتنا الاجتماعية ، تبدأ حياتنا في التدهور بمجرد ان نسلم مصيرنا لشخصٍ آخر"
تحسن كبير وملحوظ في الأسلوب وُجد في هذا الجزء رغم ان الجريمة كانت تافهة لدرجة الصدمة ، لكنها تبقى جريمة قتل وقد وجب من صديقتنا كاتي البحث والتحقيق لاكتشاف حقيقة القصة كاملة
احب التلقائية التي خلقت منها الكاتبة شخصية البطلة

موضوعيتها تجاه نفسها وتجاه تعاملها مع الناس المحيطة بها

رواية غلسة جدا بالنسبة لي. ما قدرتش أكملها. طريقة السرد مملة والرواية محملة بتفاصيل كتير خارج الموضوع بتزهق القارئ وتفصله. كمان للأسف الكاتبة لم تنجح في جعلي أرتبط بالشخصيات، أو أتعاطف مع المجني عليها علشان أهتم بمعرفة ما جرى لها.

Anche questa volta il delitto è solo una scusa per raccontare Istanbul, solo che non la città allegra dei primi due romanzi: questa volta è una città sottosopra per i lavori stradali, per il crimine e per l'atmosfera politica.
Protagonista sempre simpatica, molto più in pace con se stessa, anche se ... ;)

Lettura piacevole , per questo che li ho letti tutti e tre. L'intreccio giallo per me è più uno sfondo , la parte più interessante è la descrizione dell'ambiente, città e personaggi turchi e di Istanbul.

Innanzi tutto il titolo spoilera un bel po', secondo me. In questo caso non è neanche colpa della traduzione, perché è quella letterale del titolo originale. Comunque il lettore comprende fin da subito che è inutile che Kati Hirschel, la libraia che vende e ama i gialli e che vive a Istanbul pur essendo tedesca - e ha di certo un modo di vivere molto più stambuliota che germanico - vada a scavare nel mondo delle lotte ambientalistiche contro l'inquinamento dovuto alle fabbriche che sorgono come funghi in Tracia e che scaricano nei fiumi rifiuti tossici; lotte di cui la vittima era un'attivista.
La morte di Sani Ankaraligil potrebbe passare per una morte naturale; forse lo è. Ma Kati deve ficcare il naso, scoprendo piste che la polizia di Istanbul e il suo caro amico, il commissario Batuhan, avevano tralasciato, e risolvendo il caso.
Kati continua a non essermi simpatica, e aver compreso chi fosse il colpevole poco dopo la metà libro non mi ha fatto certo impazzire. Per di più, in questo capitolo, Istanbul passa un po' troppo in sottofondo, per cui non c'è neanche quella consolazione.
Però leggerò l'ultimo capitolo, giusto per onore di completezza (e anche perché quando si parla di ballo mi si drizzano le antenne).

This is apparently the third in a series, but (mostly) worked just fine as a standalone from what I could tell. If you're looking for a rip-roaring mystery to solve, this isn't it. I found it kind of odd as far as set-up/motivation. The story goes with various possibilities that are brought up/partway investigated. As is the case in quite a few books, the ending felt rushed (even though the story itself was fairly long & sometimes meandering). I don't read a lot of mysteries but this didn't feel satisfying even to me as a mystery. It feels more like a novel with some mysterious stuff thrown in, if that makes sense.
I always enjoy reading reviews of books after I've finished them. A couple of GR reviews mention that Aykol rarely describes the characters so the reader really doesn't have a picture of what the characters look like, nor much about Istanbul (other than lots of potholes & roadwork & traffic) & those things are true.
I would classify it as a solid ok.

The mystery aspect was mild. The search for the culprit(s) is slow and as expected enlightening. The victim was a distant acquaintance of Kati’s and as she peels back the layers and inner circle of this woman’s life things become very interesting as secrets and possible motives are exposed. The drawn out narrative can drag a bit, however Kati’s often brash personality keeps you entertained. Fofo, Kati’s best friend and fellow amateur gumshoe have their share of witty repartee allowing for plenty of chuckles. Momentum ebbs and flows, other scenarios interrupt causing minuscule subplots.
Kati Hirschel possesses a strong personality. At times she grates on your nerves with her jagged edges, other times her edges are smooth and you appreciate her softer side. I have a better grasp of her by the end of the book, although the road was bumpy. Once you learn of her past, concerns, and there is enough presented, you understand this fiercely independent, strong woman much better.
The fact Kati is the owner of the only crime/mystery book store in Istanbul is clever. She reads so much crime she’s confident she can solve local crimes of merit, and she does. Kati is so adept at sleuthing she impresses the police, in fact they quasi consult her, adding to her over abundant level of confidence.
Another interesting aspect I enjoyed, seeing Turkey through Kati’s eyes. Kati is an expatriate from Germany, still adjusting to Turkish ways and people despite residing in Turkey for quite some time. Interesting to learn the intricacies of Turkey along with Kati as well as her comparisons of Germany vs. Turkey.
Mild mystery filled with numerous and electric characters. A few surprises along the way to solving the murder. I was off base as to the culprit, which was welcomed. Not until the very very end did all the pieces come together. Kati and Fofo will entertain you both on and off the case. Given Turkish is a difficult language to translate I found the translation strong. I still wish I could read every language to fully experience each story in their original tongue.

Ganz nett zu lesen, aber ein langsam verlaufender Krimi. Dies ist das 1. Buch das ich von Aykol gelesen habe. Es handelt sich um die krimi Buch Verkäuferin die mit einem Freund von sich, Fofo, versucht einen Mord zu klären der zu anfängst nicht als Mord gesehen wird.

But was Sani Ankaralıgil, estranged wife of the heir to an industrial fortune, actually murdered? The police don’t seem to think so. The press have reported on her accidental death. And yet Kati cannot leave it alone. Particularly as the deeper she digs, the more reasons she uncovers for more than one person to have wanted Sani dead.
A Suspicious Death was a better read, I thought, than Esmahan Aykol’s first Kati Hirşel mystery. This time out, Aykol involved her heroine more actively in seeking to solve the mystery with fewer diversions into Kati’s personal life. Although the author still cannot seem to escape the temptation, as the story should be reaching its climax, to indulge Kati in yet another failed love affair. It’s also a bit difficult to believe that so many people in Turkey, especially men, would pour their hearts out to a female private detective, revealing potentially shameful and damaging secrets. Just because she asked them to. Still, the story was quite intriguing, better constructed than the first. Aykol’s skill is growing.

رحلة جديدة مع الأدب البوليسى و هذه المرة رحلتنا في تركيا مع كاتي هيرشيل الألمانية صاحبة المكتبة المتخصصة فى بيع روايات الجريمة فقط ، تعيش بتركيا و تهوي حل الألغاز و الجرائم حتي انها ساعدت الشرطة في حل جريمتين سابقًا.
تنوت ساني انكاراليجيل بشقتها إثر سقوطها و ذلك بعد ستة أشهر فقط من طلب الطلاق من زوجها الثري. لا توجد شبه جنائية في موتها...... إلا أن مسرح الحادثة يشير لوجود شخص آخر معها بالمنزل وقت وقوعها ، فمن هو و ما دخله بموتها ؟!!
يتوالي ظهور الشخصيات و تتشعب الأحداث و تتداخل ليتعدد المشتبه بهم و تنتهي الرواية بمفاجأة كبيرة.
رغم جودة الفكرة إلا أن العمل يحمل الكثير من المط و التطويل و التفاصيل الجانبية الكثيرة التي أضعفت الحبكة و أضاعت عنصري التشويق و الإثارة بالعمل...... للأسف كان رتم العمل بطئ جداً جداً.
نجمتين فقط لتجربة أولي مع الكاتبة و عمل توقعت منه أكثر مما وجدت.

طريقة تسويق الكتاب كانت ممتازة جدا،وباكثر من موقع كان دائما خبر عن الرواية.
للاسف جاهدت وتعبت جدا لانهاء الرواية،لم استطعمها ابدا.
الحبكه والكتابة والسيناريو ماكانوا جذابين.
الشي الوحيد الجميل،هو نظرة بطلة الرواية كالمانيه في تركيا،وكيف ترى المجتمع التركي بعاداته وتقاليده،استمتعت بالفعل.

Terzo caso della libraia/investigatrice Kati . A dispetto delle altre volte, questo caso non la coinvolge personalmente ma la voglia di venirne a capo è sempre la stessa. Un interessante mix di vita di tutti i giorni ad Istanbul, politica ed investigazioni. Scorre decisamente bene e finisce praticamente subito. Il romanzo è scritto come se fosse la stessa Kati a raccontare cosa succede come se si fosse davanti ad un caffè turco a fare due chiachciere.
Esmahan Aykol (da Wikipedia): Esmahan Aykol è nata a Edirne da una famiglia di immigrati di cui il padre è un professore di diritto ebraico. A Istanbul Esmahan frequenta un collegio inglese dove il tedesco viene insegnato come seconda lingua, e poi si iscrive all'Università alla Facoltà di Legge. Dopo gli studi tenta di stabilirsi ad Istanbul ma poi torna a Berlino ed inizia a scrivere romanzi. Da sempre, però, è legata ai semi sociali come l'immigrazione o i bambini si strada.

Might be more of a 3.5, but it's the first one I have read by this author, of this series with a female protagonist, and translated into English. I quite enjoyed it, although read as an ebook with the cover shown for paperback edition. I will likely look for other books in the series. Although murder is involved, and politics and relationships, the book seems to have a lighter hand for a serious subject. Very different from the Barbara Nadel books, with their two main male detectives, of which I have likely read all volumes.

A clever, atmospheric, and culturally rich mystery. Aykol continues to use the detective genre to explore the layers of Istanbul society. The 'Divorce Turkish Style' theme was handled with great humor and insight. While the mystery was a little predictable in places, the joy of this series is spending time with Kati and seeing the city through her eyes. Highly recommended for fans of international mysteries!

La trama gialla, seppur molto semplice, è appassionante, si sviluppa infatti in un contesto di lotta ambientalista contro l'inquinamento idrico. La lettura è andata avanti veloce ed trovato una Kati un po' meno irritante rispetto ai volumi precedenti, ma sempre pronta a cacciarsi nei guai😎.
Fantastico! Come una pantera pronta al balzo non vedevo l'ora di lanciarmi in una nuova indagine per far luce su un presunto delitto. Al diavolo il lavoro e i debiti!
Peccato per le descrizioni della città siano un po' meno presenti, ma abbiamo ben capito che ad Istanbul potresti passare anche mezza giornata in macchina se ti devi spostare da una parte all'altra della città... e noi che ci lamentiamo del traffico di Roma e Milano 😅.

Che noia! La storia è floscia, le indagini per nulla interessanti, la protagonista è davvero antipatica, si considera molto brillante e pensa lo siano anche le sue battute (spoiler: non lo sono). Certe sue considerazioni e frasi da boomer sono davvero imbarazzanti. Vi consiglio di usare il vostro tempo prezioso leggendo qualcosa di più coinvolgente!

Lettura gradevole, che mantiene la promessa del genere "noir". Particolarmente interessante la parentesi sulla Tracia orientale, argomento che compare di rado nella letteratura d'evasione.

Really disappointed, this promised so much, delivered so little. Not much description and complexities of culture, no real sense of place (Istanbul, for goodness sake, how can you boil that down to traffic!!!), and the characters could have been in any country in the world. Not for me.
