Slade McCafferty had thus far avoided being lassoed by a member of the opposite sex—the confirmed bachelor was too busy raising hell to settle down. Fifteen years ago daredevil Slade had taken wild child Jamie Parsons's innocence—and then broken her heart.

But now Jamie was back in town, a lawyer, all confidence and polished professionalism. And seeing her again set off a tidal wave of emotions Slade thought he'd dammed up ages ago. What had happened between them was ancient history. Still, there was something about Jamie that made Slade ache for more. A hell of a lot more…

Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.

Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

Lisa Jackson keeps her McCafferty series going with "Slade", you know a book is a good read when while your reading it, you get so involved with the story line that you forget your doing a review on that book. That's how good "The McCaffertys" is, very good reads in a little package.

SEDUCCION Y CONQUISTA
TITULO ORIGINAL: SLADE
GENERO: ROMANCE CONTEMPORANEO

I really can't understand what other people see in this book. I mean, it's not the worst book I've ever read, but it's still not a good book.

I haven't read any of the other books in the series but after reading this one, I have no desire to check them out. The main problem with Slade's story is that it's only HALF a story. The book is split between the Slade/Jamie story and extremely, extremely, EXTREMELY repetitive discussions on how someone is trying to kill the sister, Randi, and she may have amnesia or may be faking it. The statement "someone is trying to kill you" appears at least a dozen times, as do descriptions of how Randi was run off the road, went into premature labor, and spent a month or more in a coma. I'm guessing these are things that happened in previous books but I really couldn't have cared less about them after the 10th time they were brought up. It was just so ridiculous that every single discussion was this same darn conversation where everyone reminded each other that Randi was being stalked. EVERYONE IN THE STORY ALREADY KNOWS THAT! THEY DON'T NEED TO KEEP RESTATING IT! So annoying.

Especially since Randi's story didn't actually GO anywhere in this book. So we have to listen to that repetitive conversation a million times, followed by Randi yelling at everyone to stay out of her business while refusing to answer any questions, and the book ends without any actual advancement on that front. It was a complete waste of time. I know the final book in the series is dedicated to Randi and that's why the author didn't want to reveal her secrets in this book, but since that was the case, Randi's involvement in this book should have been 1/10th what it was because nothing was actually happening. It was just filler. On the whole, Randi seemed like a royal brat. She endangered her entire family, including her brother's 3-year-old twin girls and her own infant son, by refusing to disclose information on her stalker and acted like her brothers were being a bunch of overbearing jerks for hiring a bodyguard to protect her. It's hard to sympathize with a character who so willfully places themselves and innocent bystanders in danger. In the final climax of this story, Randi's stalker sets a booby trap at the ranch that comes very, very close to killing both Slade and Thorn, and Randi still won't give up any information on the stalker and she never even apologizes for putting them in danger like that! When that fire happened I was seriously waiting for either Nicole or Jamie to just tear into Randi for putting the lives of their men in danger, not to mention the kids, but it never happened. Everybody just kept on letting Randi be an arrogant self-centered brat about it. So all in all, the Randi aspect of this book was repetitive, annoying, repetitive, boring and did I mention repetitive?

As for the Jamie and Slade love story, it didn't get enough screen time to really develop. I never felt much of a spark between them, especially not from Slade's side. By his own admission, he had never given Jamie a second thought after he broke her heart 15 years ago. That seriously unromantic. It would have been better if he'd always considered her the one that got away, or felt that dumping her was the biggest mistake of his life, etc.. Instead we have Jamie, who spent her whole life in love with Slade and stewing over the way he'd first seduced her out of her virginity and then dumped her for another woman, and Slade, who went on with his life of fun and adventure without ever thinking of her again. That makes Jamie seem pathetic and Slade like a heartless jerk. So with that foundation I just couldn't believe Slade's instant pursuit of Jamie or his quick declaration of love. He went from "haven't thought about her in 15 years" to "she's the one for me" in about two days, during which the only time they spent together was while fighting. How can he think she's the one when he doesn't know anything about her? She's not the same little girl she was when they dated all those years ago. Plus the fact that Slade kept reminiscing about how his dead father had said it was time for Slade to settle down, made it seem like Jamie just happened to be the only female around when he finally decided to take his old man's advice.

As with Randi's half of the story, there was an awful lot of repetitious talking between Jamie and Slade. There's one scene early on where Slade keeps trying to discuss the past and Jamie says "I thought we weren't going to go there" about eight times. And the thing is, they kind of never DO go there. We never really hear Slade's explanation for why he behaved the way he did. He sort of half-says that he was afraid that Jamie was different from other girls and their relationship would be "real" so he got scared and ran away, but that doesn't really jive with his whole "never gave her a second thought" admission. If he was really hung up enough on Jamie to be scared of the depth of their feelings for each other, then you'd have thought she would have crossed his mind once or twice over the last decade and a half. I kept waiting for Slade to give some sort of explanation that would justify his abandonment of Jamie those years ago. Like that the woman he'd dumped Jamie for had claimed she was pregnant, or that she threatened to commit suicide if Slade didn't come back to her. ANYTHING would have been better than the nothing we got. In the absence of any justification for Slade's behavior, all we're left with is him truly being the heartless jerk Jamie spent the last 15 years believing he was. That's a tough hero to root for, especially when he never actually apologizes for doing it.

I just never believed Jamie and Slade had any real feelings for each other. Jamie came across as a pathetic, emotionally brittle woman who'd spent her whole life just waiting for Slade to give her a second glance. And Slade spent a lot more time in this story worrying about his sister than he did romancing Jamie. All in all, if the Randi portions of the book had been significantly pared down and that time had instead been spent establishing and developing the relationship between Slade and Jamie then that would have made for a much better book.

Oh, and I listened to this in audiobook and the narrator, Amy McFadden, was incredibly annoying. She over-enunciated every word so it made the dialogue sound stilted and ridiculous. She also had trouble keeping track of who was speaking and which voice she'd assigned to them. Several times she read Randi's parts in a male voice, apparently forgetting that Randi was a girl. The story was annoying enough on its own, so the bad narrator really made it unbearable.

I get so involved in the story line that as i'm taking shower or doing dishes I keep dreaming up what could happen next. I could hardly put it down.

This is the first book of the series I have read. I hope to go back and start at the beginning before reading anymore of this series. I also hope that they are better than this one.

Lisa Jackson has been one of my favorite authors for many years, but this isn't a favorite book with me. Somethings in the plot just don't strike me as being okay. For one thing, I felt that Slade was a weak character and found it hard to sympathize with him.

Good read

Funny, sexy, mysterious and some romance. She's a lawyer now and he's still footloose and fancy free. They meet again and the sparks fly. Highly recommend.

This one was just sort of okay. It was the second-chance lovers trope, which I'm usually a fan of. Slade and Jamie were teenage lovers when Slade dumped Jamie for his ex-girlfriend for seemingly no other reason than that they would burn each other out or some such nonsense. Fifteen years go by and Jamie's a successful attorney and Slade has never really figured out his calling in life. He sees Jamie when she comes to help the family with some legal affairs and decides he must have her back in his life.

This one seemed like it went from zero to sixty in about half a page about midway through the book. All of the sudden, Jamie goes from having extremely good reasons for keeping Slade at arms' length to "Oh I luuuurv you!" Sure, part of it was a high-tension situation that comes about, but it started even before that. Slade dumped her for a pretty lame reason . I wouldn't want the guy sniffing around me either without some serious proof that he wasn't going to give me some dumb excuse (if he gives one at all) and run off again. He dumped her for no reason and he seemed like he decided he wanted her back after fifteen years for no reason (other than, of course, luuurv).

Anyway, it was a cute read. I know it seemed like Slade groveled a lot in getting Jamie back, but for the lame reason he had, it seemed like he really should have groveled some more. Not because I enjoy seeing men in romance novels grovel (although, let's be honest -- I do) but because I left the book pretty much feeling like he did it once and I'm not sure I saw anything to indicate he wouldn't do it again. At least when they grovel for a while, you're pretty sure they're going to learn the lesson for good.

I really liked this book but was left feeling that something was missing ... well that and one storyline not wrapped up so need to read next book.

I give this book a high 3 1/2 stars.

Slade McCaffertery is the black sheep, the wanderer; come home to lick his wounds and decide what's next.

Jamie Parson's loved Slade when they were teens and he broke her heart, she's not giving him another chance.

I decided to try out a romance novel. This was the first one I came across. It leaves a lot of loose ends, which is fine since it is part of a larger series. The story plods along until it's done, with all the cliches I expected making an appearance. I had hoped for better.

My only hesitation with this is book the amount of time Slade spends drawling. He's from Montana, they don't typically drawl their words. Other than that, fun, sexy homecoming romance. :)
