I think the thing I enjoy most about these books is learning all about the Lakes region of England. Being an American, I’ve learned alot about English customs, history and way of life. I really enjoy the characters.
I've finished all of the series, not just this section, and am now anxiously awaiting more DI Skelgill, coming this summer. Sometimes Amazon's Kindle Unlimited recommendations are underwhelming, but these books were wonderful -- not too noir and not that you'd know right away whodunnit. I loved the characters and all of the descriptions of the settings. Plus, if you send Bruce Beckham an email, he truly will send you Scottish recipes! If you're a fan of mysteries, check these out.
The imagery and use of colloquial terms transport you to wherever Skelgil is at the moment. Each book seems to reveal, as well as reinforce, the characters and their relationships. I appreciate the lack of profanity and erotica. The inference of emotions and possibilities are painted so well that no play-by-play is needed.
The mystery stays as mystery, for me, until the author chooses to reveal. I am thoroughly enjoying these books!
One of the author's better twist at the end. Throughout the story of modern day animal rights activism vs the restrictions of caged animals for economic gain and add in the ancient activity of fox hunting in the beautiful Lakes District the reader wonders who are the good guys (apart fron Skelgill and his team!) and who are the bad guys! Beckham continues to tease us with his descriptive imagery of the Lakes and Fells.
The DI Skelgill Books 8-10 were very good. I always enjoy this series by Bruce Beckham (box set 3 ). Volume 10 was particularly good, with very convoluted circumstances leading to a couple of deaths and an apparent animal rights protest against a zoo and a fox hunting group provide cover for an attack on a nuclear plant grand opening, foiled at the very last possible moment by Skelgill.
I love all sorts crime, detective, mysteries. I read rocket roller coaster stories, as well as, slow and steady. I like these series...they are cerebral and the author is great at story line and implanting clues. The author keeps you guessing until the end. Great reads.
Another winning tale. One thing I'd like would've a Been map with each book covering each novel.
Each novel should include photographs depicting the diverse landscapes and locations the protagonist traverses throughout the story, enhancing the reader's visual understanding and immersion in the narrative.
Have just finished book 10 of this compelling series. Lots of sub plots and excellent geographical information which transport you to the Lake District.
Believable characters, beautifully rendered scenery and twisty plots give this series punch & power; I couldn’t wait to reach the final chapters to have the threads all tied together. Well done, Mr Beckham!
The Inspector Skelgill series gets better with each book! Although they are written to be stand-alone books, it's better to read them in order to enjoy the relationships. Now, on to book 11!
I continue to enjoy this series. Skelgill and his compatriots provide enjoyable adventures with no need for extreme violence. You don’t have to stay with book one, but give them a try.
This collection of books (8-10) introduces three wonderfully complex puzzles to be solved by the idiosyncratic Skelgill and his long-suffering sergeants Jones and Leyton. Each page-turning ending had me reading as fast as I could.
