A strikingly illustrated dark fantasy, in which a frail young man's terrible magic could lead him to ultimate power. And don't miss the manga version, also from Seven Seas!
Fate Graphite has never tasted real power. Born with the magical skill Gluttony, he has been shunned and looked down upon his entire life, and constantly hungers in a way that can’t be satiated. One day, while working as a gatekeeper for a noble family and fighting a trespassing thief, he discovers Gluttony's true power: when he kills someone, he devours their skills and feeds his gnawing hunger at last. In that grisly realization, Fate is awakened to his true potential. How many lives will he feed on to satisfy this hunger, and is the world ready for the terrifying warrior he’ll become?
Not sure what I can say about this book. In tone and pacing, it is much like the first one. We get more character development, we get to learn more about how the magic system and the world works. We see the protagonist continue to get better and evolve in their abilities and how Greed evolves as a weapon. It was an enjoyable read, but looking back, if you asked me what happened, I could give you maybe three points top, and that's it. This tells me that a lot of it was forgettable and didn't stand out amongst all of the light novels I am reading alongside this one. Now, that said, the memorable parts were quite good, and I think added a lot to the story, hence the 4 star rating. Yes, I will be getting the third book, as I do enjoy this series, and have considered getting the physical copies as well; which I only do with books series I quite enjoy. So in the end, not bad for the second book in the series. I am curious as to where it will continue and what will happen next. I guess I will find out...
The series' biggest problem is (aside from infodumping world mechanics a lot) genuinely its pacing. It's a webnovel adaptation, obviously so, but it just rushes through events with little breathing room. What was an issue with the anime adaptation already is even more evident here, I'm afraid to say.
Things occur, then the protagonist needs to be brought up to speed in the moment, probably have a battle, and before things have settled, it's on to the next thing.
Here, thankfully, things do have an opportunity to slow down a little for a while, all while introducing one of its coolest side characters. It's still extremely rushed - the entire multi-chapter sequence takes place over only 3 days and sees massive growth! - but at least it feels like the story finally had a moment to breathe.
But I'm also a little biased because this is Myne's volume, and Myne is obviously my waifu. Her design and character are great, so having her along is a pleasure and breaks up the established dynamics quite noticeably.
There are three big boss lords in this second volume. I get a feeling the story is moving a bit fast? A secondary character Myne (possessing Ax of Sloth and the innate skill of Wrath) finishes her life-long desire with the aid of the main character, Fate Graphite (possessing sword of Greed and innate skill of Gluttony). Myne then goes her own way. Fate, the main character rushes to Galia to be able to become stronger to protect Lady Roxy Hart, sent to Galia to guard the frontier from the monster stampedes. This second volume has untold/unpublished battles with powerful boss lords. Because of his success, he is able to open up new advanced abilities on his weapon Greed. Get the feeling this story because of its fast pace, will finish soon?
I enjoyed where the second volume of this series is heading. The world which Fate and Greed inhabit was fleshed out more during this story and you got the opportunity to see a little of the tables country of Galia, I couldn't help but try comparisons to the modern legend of Atlantis and I am very curious to see how this world is further explained especially in regards to how it relates to Myne. Can't wait for the next volume to be released.
Another dark yet action filled volume! I really enjoy seeing Fate's journey and the mystery behind Gluttony which grows even deeper. I'm hungrily waiting for the next volume!
I enjoy this story but I hope fate gets to be a little less whiney and more sure of himself soon. And when does he get to fall in love?! Keri the series going!
Good continuation of the story, though it might feel like it is moving fast, monster-wise. There are three boss monsters and the stats increase drastically as the story goes. I do like that we are seeing more of the world the characters live in and you get your first hint of the overarching plot.
This is such a fun series so far. I am enjoying it. Characters are great and they show steady growth. In this volume, Fate learns from a Holy Knight. He learns new skills and more about his Gluttony curse as well as his Greed weapon. He begins traveling with Myne, which gave this volume some funny moments.
