LadyLuck Startups #2

Vesting Period

Rate this book
App designer Carter Montgomery has thrown herself into being a successful co-founder of LadyLuck for the last half decade. Until now, she’s been content to focus on work mixed with a little light fun. It takes a horrible date with an infuriating woman to make her realize that maybe she isn’t so satisfied with things and that it’s time she got serious about investing in her love life.

Jamie Prescott spends her time working in different cities, always with a new startup to wrangle as she avoids putting down roots. It’s worked well for her so far, at least as well as living out of hotels and having casual flings can for a person. When Jamie ends up in San Francisco, she expects some carefree hookups from the LadyLuck app. She isn’t expecting to meet Carter, a woman who’s as frustrating as she is attractive.

Carter is finally ready for something serious, and Jamie wants anything but emotional vulnerability. Why is it that everyone around them seems to think that might just make them the perfect match?

This is the second instalment for the LadyLuck Startup series. The first book, called Sweat Equity was the first novel I read by Monica McCallan, and it started me on my obsession with her books. So when I heard that Vesting Period was coming out, I was beyond excited, so I reread Sweat Equity first to get me ready for book two.

I thoroughly enjoyed Vesting Period. As someone who works for a start-up, these books are right up my street, and I find myself even more invested (get it? 😉) in this second book.

I loved Carter in book one, so I was super excited to get her story. She is a powerhouse but also sweet and kind. Carter is such a fantastic friend, and I really would love to grab a coffee with her and talk all things tech and lesbians. She was definitely my favourite character in this book, but Jamie was my crush. #swoon

Who doesn’t love a woman who is turned by someone so amazing she can’t go back to her caddish ways. Carter well and truly spun Jamie’s world on her axis. Jamie’s life up until now made me want to hug her so hard. She really deserved a woman like Carter in her life. Hooray for happy endings.

We have Brennan Story up; next, I hope. I can’t wait for Monica to write it and I’ll be watching closely for the arrival of that book.

The chemistry in this book is a phenom, and it’s clear from the beginning that these two are going to have fantastic chemistry. Jamie and Carter create some amount of sexual tension when they are together; it was delicious. What I loved was the build-up. They started as enemies to friends to ‘I need to rip your clothes off’ friends. And let me tell you this is to date the sexiest book Monica McCallan has ever written. Oft it’s HOT!

Such a great book! I honestly loved it the first (and second) time I read it. I’d advise reading book one in the series first (because it was also awesome) before reading this book as you will get to know the other character much better. What better way to spend a weekend than reading not one Monica McCallan book but two. You know I’m right!!

Excellent story

This second book in the series did not disappoint. I loved visiting with the Ladyluck gang again. Carter is a great character who works more than she relaxes. Avery used their dating app to set Carter up. The sparks fly when Jaime and Carter meet up. They both need to figure out what they want. Jaime has some tough decisions to make. They are a very sexy couple. I look forward to Brennan's story.

It’s been a year and a half since I last read book #1 of this series, so I’ve pretty much forgotten the original characters’ demeanors already. I’ve read a lot of books by McCallan since then, so reading the blurb for book #1 allowed only for the slightest recollection of who these characters are. It didn’t matter much, however, since this book could be read as a standalone. But going back to my review for Sweat Equity, it looks like Carter made an impression, so I’m glad to read about her story here in book #2.

Out of all of McCallan’s books, I think this had one of the most exciting beginnings for me. Being a sucker for intellectual conversations got me wired about the MCs’ first date, because that alone showed us how intelligent these women are which was hella sexy 😍

I enjoyed how the MCs butted heads at first, as the topic of their debates were the sort of things I’d personally be down for—as someone whose head is constantly up in the clouds 😅 To me, these are the kinds of talks you simply can’t have with just about anyone, because it takes a special person to flip a switch in your mind and inadvertently engross you in a discourse on matters close to your heart or subjects that just gratifyingly mess with your head. So, witnessing Carter and Jamie have at it set my expectations for their chemistry really high.

But reaching the middle of the book, I found my attention on the story fleeting from time to time. Maybe I could blame my mood for this, but it seems to me that the MCs' moments together when they got around each other more didn't ignite that same passion I witnessed in their first encounter. Their chemistry just wasn't as strong as I'd anticipated it to be. I even kept asking myself why that is, but I can't seem to pinpoint the reason. I think it has something to do with the overall atmosphere in the events where the MCs were together; it just didn't scream "two people falling in love" to me. On top of that, the situation when they first slept together wasn't imbued with enough fervor, making it seem the sex only happened because they were at a convenient place. I just didn't feel the buildup being there in that exact moment.

I guess I set my expectations too high that's why I only find this to be an okay read. I added the third star for the philosophical and psychological talks, I just wish I liked the other parts better as well.

Second in the LadyLuck Startups series and I enjoyed this one more than the first. Carter Montgomery was my favorite side character so I am happy this is her romance. This evidently takes place a few months after the first book and Carter and her partners are still in the process of growing their dating app. Carter, a southern belle from GA, is finally realizing she is ready to start looking for a relationship. When she decides to try her own app she meets up with Jamie Prescott. Their first meeting doesn't go great nor does the second. But Jamie is in SF for consulting at a business that shares the same floor space.

Both Jamie and Carter keep thinking about each other but Jamie avoids relationships. They agree to be friends and hang out and finally go further on the eve of Jamie returning to NYC. I really enjoyed the connections as first and than everything is rushed but once they are on opposite sides of the country things slowed down for me. I hope Brennon will eventually get her story and I will read it. But I've enjoyed other MCCallan books more than this series. (3.5 stars)

It's rare to see a book set in the world of tech that really focuses on two women who are great at their jobs in their own right and not locked in some kind of competition--it was refreshing. Carter is a co-founder of LadyLuck with a few of her best friends. Jamie is in San Francisco working as a consultant to get another app start-up in the co-working space back on track on behalf of the investment firm she works for.

Carter is firmly rooted in SF tied closely to her friends while Jamie is a constant traveler with no ties. Carter realizes she wants a relationship with a future and Jamie is set on avoiding anything too deep. The two clash early and challenge each other intellectually. It's nice to watch the relationship advance to a place of respect before moving onto something more.

Plus, it's a McCallan novel, so you know that eventual payoff is worth any wait.

Ladyluck app was founded and now the founders are trying to live life while expanding and improving their app. These woman not only work together but live together in San Francisco.

Jaime is a national traveler, going where work sends her for weeks on end. Carter is busy working on Ladyluck making "friends" but not making true connections. Carter and Jaime end up on a Ladyluck date and sparks do not fly. It is interesting to see the finer side of start-up business.

I read this out of order, which I do all the time for no reason at all. It didn’t matter. Monica McCallan is so dang reliable with her writing. It doesn’t matter that it’s part of a series. It can stand on its own.

Low angst, slow burn, HEA and delightful spice are my jams. This kinda starts out as enemies to friends. The chemistry and slow burn were right there. There’s not really a 3rd act break up, so there was no worry about that coming up during the read.

Nice easy read and just lovely.

Vesting Period was just okay for me. It was a tad on the slow side even though there was enough back and forth between the mains that it should have been a bit more exciting. Just 3 stars for me.

I really enjoyed Sweat Equity (Book 1 in the series) but I think I enjoyed this one just a tad more. I love Carter and Jamie as characters - they are both so smart and independent. I loved following their story in Vesting Period and really enjoyed the slow-burn between them.

Carter is a SF co-founder of a lesbian dating app whose friend uses the app to set her up on a date with Jamie. Jamie is in town on business and only wants a hookup. Other than her best friend in NYC, she has no other ongoing connections with people and prefers it that way. On their date, Carter and Jamie get into an intellectual argument that rubs Carter the wrong way, so she ends the date and leaves. But Jaime's start-up client is based in the same We Work type office as Carter's company and the two seem unable to avoid one another.

This is a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers type romance set in the world of tech start-ups, which is something that interests me. It's a pretty standard lesfic romance with witty dialogue that's a bit too clever for the real world and friends and family who see potential when the MCs cannot. It's the second book featuring these SF start-up founders, so if you haven't read book 1 (I hadn't) you might find the beginning a bit dull. But if you're revisiting people you liked in book 1, you'll be ok.

McCallan is a pretty consistent 4 star read, and if the set-up for this book interests you, I recommend it.

This is a wonderfully executed standalone yet in series lesfic.

The story starts with the original group from the first book, to give new readers a chance to get to know them. They're just as endearing and enjoyable to read as before, and provide a great basis for Carter's story to kick off from.

The way Jamie is introduced to the group and kept in their orbit is really natural and provides such great opportunity to let all the characters have their place in the story. But Carter and Jamie's scenes really bring the book alive, they just have such a great dynamic that drew me in.

As the story expands it's powered by new side characters that are a delight to read. Amanda in particular had me excited whenever her name came up. I will genuinely be miffed if she's not in the next book, as ridiculous as that is to hope for.

All in all, it's a great read and a wonderful journey that the characters take to get to their satisfying ending.

I read this soon after Sweat Equity and I am so glad I did. I'm interested in these women's lives and what will happen next.

I loved the intellectual, infuriating, and curious conversations these two women had. It isn't common that dialogue peaks my interest so much in a romance novel, but it did. Carter and Jamie were intelligent and sincere, and it made for a better read. The fact they were both interested in something(philosophy) and met each other as equals instead of an emotional/financial power dynamic was fantastic. They didn't back down, and I appreciated that.

Monica McCallan knows how to write characters in a profound way that brings them to life instead of 2D women with an inevitable path towards HEA in my humble opinion. Definitely still HEA, which I much prefer.

I can't wait for the next. Can't help but hope for a Brennan book.

Vesting Period

What a beautiful story of the meeting of minds of two people who at first clashed against each other’s egos. You may not think this is realistic but it was how my wife and I first started out in our relationship. I enjoyed the fact that the author didn’t go into the technicalities of start ups as it would have gone over my head. They say fiction is strange but real life can be even stranger.
I have read a number of books by this author but feel this is the best of them so far.

Once I realized that Monica’s second installment of the LadyLuck series had come out I had to read it. Even more exciting was that it was Carter’s story! She was an instant favorite and I couldn’t wait to read her story and this book didn’t disappoint. Seriously though, this book literally got me out of my reading funk that I was in. Their personalities being a completely opposite but driving force for the attraction between them makes this enemy to lovers book so good! Now what are you waiting for?

Carter Finds Her Home

Carter Montgomery is one of the co-founders of the Lady Luck Lesbian dating app. Avery and Brennan pester her until she lets Avery sit up a date for her. Jamie Prescott is a consultant who travels from city to city to help start-ups trim their costs and fix their organization so they can get more funding. She’s in San Francisco temporary and only wants brief non-binding relationships. They clash at first sight and the tension builds to extraordinary levels. A complex cross country romance.

Loved it

This book is the second in the Lady Luck start up series, but can be read as stand alone. Carter is an app designer for a dating app but hasn’t been successful in her own romances. She meets Jamie on a date and they frustrating don’t get on. Great story about how initial impressions can change and perhaps the person who you thought was wrong was actually right for you. Really good read, would highly recommend.

Vesting Period is another great book from Monica McCallan - if you haven't checked out her books already, you definitely should. The characters are wonderfully written, and the romance between them is both engaging and believable. It's also great to read a book with characters based in the tech industry; it's not something I've come across too often, especially in LGBT+ fiction!

What happens in SF doesn't stay there it follows you

Fun interesting tale of Startups in San Francisco and how different women meet when they come to work there. As a former Bay area techie this sounds pretty accurate, I worked is startups and it seems pretty true to form. The romance is complicated but it has some plot twists to make it work. Very sweet tale of how one woman can take your heart and your mind. Spoiler alert There is an HEA

Sometimes you just want to grab characters by the scruffs of their necks' and shake them, and that's exactly what happened here with Carter and Jamie. Two big ol' dummies and some classic miscommunication (that didn't feel telegraphed from a reader's perspective)!

That being said, I absolutely cannot freaking wait until Monica McCallan writes LadyLuck #3 with Brennan, who I feel is going to be an absolute hoot as a MC at last.

Great!

I loved reading Carters story. she definitely deserves love and she’s just as stubborn as Jamie. I liked the story telling. The grammar wasn’t as distracting in this one compared to the first. I did gloss over some things, but overall, the writing and story are great! I definitely want to complete this series and dive into her newer books which is what made me want to read her beginning works as well. The tension and sparks are there in this slow burn, romance novel.

One of my absolute favorite things about McCallan's books is the characterization. She writes characters with strong voice, they're compelling and fun to explore.
The story itself is entertaining and fun, sweet. It's a great addition to her already wonderful array of works.
