Series: Seductive Scoundrels #2 Publication Date: 10/17/18 Number of Pages: 246 – Audio Time: 3h 42m
I am reviewing the audio version of this absolutely delightful story. The book is well-paced and well-written and the narrator, Stevie Zimmerman, is delightful. Her character range of voices is excellent and I am sure she is a native to England because her accent is so natural and easy. The male voices are more raspy than deep, but they are convincing just the same. All-in-all, it is a delightful listen!
Theadosia Josephine Clarice Brentwood’s father is the vicar of this parish and he is a stern, severe man. He’s been even sterner and more severe since her older sister eloped with the man she loved – even though her father had refused his suit. Now Thea and her sister are paying the price for that. When Thea is returning from paying an ‘official’ visit to some parishioners, she cuts through the church cemetery. She’s startled when she hears a moan – even though she knows it isn’t ghosts. When she hears it again, she moves toward the sound. Then, she sees Victor lying at his father’s grave asking “Why”. She knows why, but he isn’t supposed to tell – but being the kind and compassionate person she is, she simply has to tell him, so she does.
Thea has always cared for Victor more than she should given the differences in their stations. He’s stayed away almost four years – and she understands why – but his mother has been alone all that time.
Victor is outlandishly drunk and steals a kiss – or two – or three from Thea because . . . well – because. Thea thoroughly enjoys the kisses, but she knows her father will punish her severely if he discovers she’s been alone with the Victor – no matter how accidental the meeting. Then, she hears voices – her father’s – and someone else’s. They are approaching, so Victor and Thea quickly move apart. Then, to distract her father and maybe to pacify him a bit, she blurts out that the duke has promised to top off the church’s funds for a new organ and to provide new robes for the choir. Victor doesn’t call her out on that and then invites them to dinner on Friday next.
The man with her father was Mr. Ledbetter, her father’s new curate. Thea immediately feels uncomfortable around the man – especially the way he looks at her. She does her best to avoid him in the future, but somehow he always manages to ‘accidentally’ touch her.
Victor Nathaniel Horatio (I never heard his last name), Duke of Sutcliffe, has returned to his childhood home in Essex to find a wife. He will find a docile, calm, biddable woman who will be happy to be left in Essex while he returns to London and resumes his regular life. Why did his father foist this on him? For some reason, at the last minute, his father had added a codicil to his will that required Victor to marry by his twenty-seventh birthday or lose all of the unentailed monies and properties to his cousin. We never learned the reason for this – there was only love between father and son – so I can only assume it was just added to provide a stressor to the story. As Victor meets Thea’s father, he acknowledges that he’ll make the donations to the church, invites them to dinner Friday next – and – asks the Vicar to preside over his marriage ceremony in August. The Vicar agrees and then asks about the bride and Victor admits that he hasn’t chosen her yet.
Over the next week, Victor and Thea manage to steal time together and grow closer. Victor has pretty much determined that Thea is the woman he wants to marry – not love, but marry – when the Vicar announces, much to everyone’s shock – including Thea – that Thea is now betrothed to Mr. Ledbetter.
Thea is appalled. How can her father promise her to a letcher? She’ll do whatever it takes to save herself – but how can she? Victor vows he’ll never let it happen.
I loved both Thea and Victor, but I absolutely adored Victor’s mother. She is the mother all of us should have!
I definitely recommend this read/listen. I despaired of anyone managing to find a HEA given the circumstances, but -- it was lovely. My only complaint was that I thought Ledbetter deserved more punishment than he got. Actually, if felt more like a reward than a punishment.
Theadosia Brentwood is cutting through the cemetery when she comes upon the very drunk and distraught Duke of Sutcliffe. She hasn't seen Victor in 3 1/2 year, not since he left after his father's suicide. When she hears his tortured voice asking his father, why? Her compassionate nature compels her to answer him. She approaches and tells him the reason his father killed himself - cancer. Victor is startled by the beauty standing before him, he thanks her for telling him and steals a kiss when she helps him up. Thea has always had a tender for Victor, but he father would never approve (he is the rector of the parish church) and Victor is far above her station. They quickly break apart when they hear voices approaching. Her father and his new curate, Mr. Leadford. To distract her father, she tells him that Victor has offered to donate the funds for the new organ and for choir robes. She looks at Victor, hoping he will not give her away - he doesn't and asks her father if he will officiate his wedding in August. Thea is crushed, he is betrothed! But when her father asks about his bride, Victor tells him, he hasn't found her yet! He invites the Brentwoods and Mr. Leadford to dinner and takes his leave.
He sees Thea again the next day and asks her to meet him the next morning. He speaks to his mother and asks her to plan a ball to find a bride. When his father died, his will states that Victor must marry by his 27th birthday or he will lose all the unentailed properties, including Ridgewood Court where his mother resides. He plans to marry and leave his bride with his mother and return to his rakish life in London, he briefly considers Thea as a bride, but is sure she would not agree to that type of marriage.
They meet each day and the longer he spends in her company, the more he wants her, even if that means giving up his wild ways. When her father announces at the dinner party that Thea will be marrying Mr. Leadford, Victor knows that he will never let that happen.
But when the truth comes out, Thea may have no choice and will be forced to choose between her family and her love.
This was a delightful novella, that is well written and perfectly paced. The characters are likable, there are twists and turns, secrets, friendship, passion and a seemingly impossible HEA. The steam level is low, but the love scenes are perfect for the story.
*I am voluntarily reviewing an uncorrected eARC that was provided to me*
Colchester Essex England 1809 Only a Duke would Dare what? Oh many things I can say after reading this delightful story. Victor, Duke of Sutcliffe and Theodosia, daughter of the local Vicar, had know each other as children before he left three years earlier after his father's suicide. He returns unexpectedly and she finds him in a most unusual place. She'd always had a tendre' for him and seeing him again, she only felt more. Victor was truly mesmerized at the beauty she had become and could only steal a kiss from her which was amazing for both of them! But in the background, Victor had a responsibility due to his father's will to marry before he was 26 (only weeks away) or he would lose his property to a cousin! He would not allow that because his mother would be displaced and he would not allow that to happen. But something is going on with the vicar when he announces Thea is to marry another and Victor declares that will never happen. Collette Cameron is the consummate story teller that always pulls me into the tale with her wonderful characters and dialogue. I always know there will be a new word or phrase I have not heard before, or a charming animal that melts the heart. I will leave you to find it yourself, but prepare to be surprised with the twist and turns that end in a heart smiling ending. PS Don't you love that cover?
This was such a lovely, gentle romance. Theodosia was such a kindhearted, generous person. She had always loved Victor, Duke of Sutcliffe and now he was home and needed to find a wife. Victor realises that he, too, has feelings for Thea. However, her father, the rector will never agree to the match, given Victor’s reputation. Her father has a different suitor in mind, one that Thea finds loathsome. This was a good paced story which I found very entertaining.
According to he's father's will, Victor, Duke of Sutcliffe, has to marry before he is 27 years old or he loses his fortune. Thea has been in love with Victor for years, but then Victor proposes to elope with her. I enjoyed reading this entertaining story. Good characters and storyline. 4☆
I loved this story. Theadosia Brentwood is a vicar’s daughter and she has a secret. She has been secretly in love with Victor Nathaniel Horatio, the Duke of Sutcliffe for many years. But why would a Duke ever want a lowly vicar’s daughter? When Theadosia’s family is threatened only the Duke can save them. Only A Duke Would Dare is a wonderful story of love and forgiveness. It is a very quick read and perfect for an afternoon on the couch. I was gifted a copy of this book.
Only a Duke Would Dare: A Regency Romance is the second book in the Seductive Scoundrels series by Collette Cameron. It can easily be read as a standalone story.
Victor, the Duke of Sutcliffe has to marry before his 27th birthday in order to keep the estate and all that comes with being the Duke. It was a stipulation that his father put in his will. When Victor returns from abroad in order to look for a biddable wife for a marriage of convenience he visits his father's grave. In a drunken state, he lies on the grave and is devastated, crying out asking why his father killed himself. It is in that state that Theadosia comes across him.
Theadosia (Thea) is a rector's daughter. She has had a crush on Victor for years and has missed him ever since he left England after his father's death. Although in a drunken state, she is glad to see him again, and when she helps him to his feet and they end up embracing and kissing she feels as if all her dreams have come true. It comes to light that Victor is looking for a wife and he wants Thea's help to find one. Not the best news for her, but of course she will help him.
After spending time together it soon becomes plain that Thea and Victor would be perfect together. BUT...she doesn't want to marry him believing that he doesn't and won't love her. When he realises that she would be perfect for him there is one huge obstacle. Thea's father insists she marries his curate even though she positively loathes the man. Her father has never put her happiness aside before, so why is he so determined that she has to marry the curate?
I absolutely loved this story. The budding romance between Thea and Victor was beautiful. I love a good story where the couple has to beat the odds so that they can be together. I enjoyed that there was an utter scoundrel, the curate. At times I even loathed Thea's father, I couldn't believe that he could be so horrid to her. Fear not, the reason why will be revealed. There, of course, will be a happy ending, but how it comes around makes for an exciting story that I had to read in one sitting. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to shake my fist at times, and at the end, I just had a smile on my face and had a happy sigh. I love a perfect ending to a perfect book.
Theadosia, the daughter of the local vicar, takes care of the former Duke of Sutcliffe’s grave, and generally does what is expected of her since her father is rather strict. She comes across Victor while tending to the grave and having harbored a tendré for Victor since childhood she is more enamored with him now. However, he is a duke and as such, is too far above her station for a match to ever occur. Victor returns to Colchester to finally deal with his father’s death and find a bride. His father’s will stated he needed to marry before his 26th birthday, which is only a few weeks away, or the estate would fall to a cousin. Victor’s plans are to quickly find a bride and marry, settle her in the manor house, and then go back to his life in London. Well, that was until he met Thea! Now he has quite the quandary – stick to his plans of a marriage of convenience or try to convince Thea to marry him. Victor plans a ball to meet all the eligible women in the area. He enlists the aid of his mother, the Dowager Duchess (a wonderful character, by the way), for planning the party, and she asks Thea for help as well. She is being asked to help plan a party for him? Oh my! Thea’s father has plans for her to marry the new curate, but the man makes Thea’s skin crawl. When she tries to explain this to her father, he does not seem to care and insists she marry. Victor senses something afoul between Thea’s father and the curate, but what? They have worked together for just a short period of time. Only a Duke Would Dare is the second novella in the Seductive Scoundrels series, and although some characters flow from one story to another, the books can be read alone. It is a wonderful story with romance, death, intrigue, blackmail, remorse, loving extended-family members, and a skin-crawling creepy villain for good measure. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and eagerly await the next book in the series!! I was gifted a copy of the book but voluntarily give my own opinions and review.
Victor the Duke of Sutcliffe having lost his father must marry before his next birthday. The circumstance around his father's death has tormented him. He goes home and while at the gravesite and meets an old childhood friend, Theadosia. Theadosia has loved Victor since childhood. She sees him drunk and grieving at his father's tomb and decides to tell him the secret surrounding his father's death (she knows from overhearing her vicar father). This new information brings both Victor and his mother some peace. In the meantime he must find a bride before his next birthday. He invites Thea's family plus the new churches accountant over for dinner. There his mother invites the girls to the ball she has decided to throw. Thea is quite excited until her father drops a huge announcement, she must marry the evil rat of an accountant. It seems her father has a problem and the assistant is blackmailing him. Victor decides to help Thea and asks to marry her. He finds out why and how Thea's father is being blackmailed and comes to the rescue. Now Thea who truly loves Victor realizes he "needs" a bride any bride. So does she marry him even though he may not love her the same way. Victor must convince her because with her doubt he has come to realize he truly does love her and time is ticking away. He might just have to throw away everything just to convince her.
So Charming, I never wanted it to end! Only A Duke Would Dare by Collette Cameron is book 3 in the Seductive Scoundrels series. Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. I alway feel good and sigh at the end of a Collette Cameron book and this one I can add to that list. Collette’s characters, Thedosia Brentwood and Victor the Duke of Sutcliffe, are so wonderful you can’t help but fall in love with them and cheer them on. This regency story is original and creative and the descriptions very clear. It is also very easy read. Just a feel good at the end type of story as Collette has a true talent for writing. I just love the she add an animal to all her books. This story has death, grief, blackmail, kindness, a very strict vicar, family love, a stray kitten, a mangily one eye cat, coming to the rescue, a betroth, a stipulation in a will and yes love. I do highly recommend you read this book or any of Collette Cameron’s books, you won’t be disappointed.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
In this delightful romance you have a couple that haven't seen each other in several years you have the hero, Duke of Sutcliffe Victor coming to terms with how his father died and why and also what his father stipulates in his last will. Then you have the heroine, Thea, who is a vicar's daughter, whose older sister eloped and married for Love but their father going all strict and forbading any contact with her and making Thea and her other sister follow more stricter rules. Then Thea and Victor meet again, and love starts to grow but then in comes "The Letch". How do Thea and Victor work out their obstacles? You need to read this book Collette Cameron spins her wonderful words into a wonderful love story that when it ends in love and happiness, you will want to keep reading more of her books. This is the 2nd book of the seductive Scoundrels series so Collette Cameron has many more characters to bring to life that will be getting their happily ending, too! Now waiting patiently for the next book...💕📚
Victor Nathaniel Horatio, the Duke of Sutcliffe has come home after an extended absence to find a bride by his birthday (a stipulation in his father’s will). He also to hopes to find something that will help him understand his father’s suicide. Theadosia Brentwood is the local vicar’s daughter. Victor and Thea are childhood friends. When they are reunited, they get to know each other again and begin to fall in love. However, there are some rather serious obstacles in their way. Now what happens? It doesn’t look like a happily ever after.
This is a delightful story with likeable characters and an interesting storyline. There are a few twists and turns, and a very creative comeuppance for the villain. I enjoyed the story and recommend it.
A lovely tale of a Parsons daughter and an Duke. The Parson is in trouble and offers his daughter to a despicable man. The earl who is looking to get married by his birthday or lose his title. After the duke and the parsons daughter reacquaint themselves, she is the one he wants to marry. But the Duke must free her family from the man trying to ruin her family. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
This book is the most romantic love story I've read this year! A beautiful love story with the Vicar's daughter, a dashing Duke, with a dastardly curate in the mix, make this story a real page turner. This book may be short in pages, but it's a complete story in every way. I'm loving this book series and I can't wait to read more of the scoundrels! I received an ARC and I choose to leave my honest review.
Victor/Sutcliffe and Theadosia - reactors midddle daughter. I enjoyed reading this captivating, slightly dramatic but very romantic story. I admire how dedicated the H was even before he realized how in love he was in with the h. Their story has a wonderful and complete HEA.
A young Duke returns home to see if he can find a young lady to marry before his birthday. According to his father's will if he doesn't marry by then he forfeits all unentailed properties and monies. He he rd up with an old friend who is the daughter of the local pastor.
Such a wonderful tale that bring a hero, a herione and a villain into our lives and brings us joy and Happiness Ever Afters. Ms. Cameron bring us yet another delightful tale of love winning.
I have read several books by Ms. Cameron. I have enjoyed all of them . I enjoyed this one also. The protagonist is one a reader loves to hate. It is a lively story with a sweet ending.
Very nice love story. Two childhood friends reunited. One lecherous clergyman, bring the couple close. Very entertaining, and found myself cheering for the couple.
A troublesome addendum to his father’s will requires Victor, Duke of Sutcliffe to marry before his twenty-seventh birthday or lose his fortune & his birthday is looming. After a three-year absence, he ventures home, intent upon finding the most biddable and forgettable miss in Essex. A woman who will make no demands upon him and won’t mind being left behind when he returns to London. Theadosia Brentwood is overjoyed when he returns. Thea’s father the Reverend Brentwood is behaving strangely & announces her betrothal to his new curate Mr Leadford who will reveal a scandalous secret if she refuses. A secret that will send her father to prison and leave her sister and mother homeless. Another very enjoyable read from the author. This is the second book in the series & whilst it’s easily read by itself I read this immediately after reading the first book in the series & I now wish more in the series were released so I could thoroughly binge. The characters are well portrayed & the pace is good. Victor & Thea are very likeable & are made for each other. Ideal for whiling away a few hours, I read it in a sitting as was loathe to put it down
Collette Cameron once again provides a thoroughly engaging story in Only a Duke Would Dare, the second offering in her Seductive Scoundrels series. We've got a parson's daughter, her longtime friend, a Duke who must marry or lose his fortune, a thoroughly repugnant, unwelcome suitor, blackmail, some hidden crimes, and secrets held and revealed. Mix those all together with several doses of humor and a very sweet romance. Voilà, an entertaining and delightful read.
Victor, Duke Sutcliffe, is rapidly approaching his 27th birthday, which normally wouldn’t be a cause for concern – if only it weren’t for that annoying part of his father’s will – the part that states all of the duchy’s unentailed property will be forfeit if Victor isn’t married. Victor decides that he’ll find a malleable young lady who will be happy to stay in the country while he continues living his life in town. Victor didn’t plan on meeting up with Theodosia Brentwood, the sister of his friend, James.
Thea is the reverend’s daughter in Colchester, and is delighted at her meetings with Victor. They strike up a friendship, then an attraction. When it looks like Victor may have found a bride he truly wants, he suit is turned down by the reverend, who insists that his daughter will marry the new curate, Mr. Leadford.
Neither Thea nor Victor can understand why the reverend would turn down a duke’s marriage offer for a mere curate. Even Thea’s appeals to her father that she finds Mr. Leadford revolting carry no weight. It seems that her formerly loving father has disappeared, and an angry, unfeeling tyrant is in his place. Not willing to give up, Victor realizes that Mr. Leadford must have some hold over Reverend Brentwood, and he’s determined to find what it is. And he’s determined that Thea will marry only him.
I quickly changed my opinion of Victor, who, at first, I thought was very shallow. He has some secrets and secret fears of his own. His decision to marry anyone was not for his own financial gain, but to be sure he could maintain a home for his mother. His actions to ensure that Thea not have to marry a sleazy lecher were heroic. I also admired Thea for standing up to her father and to Mr. Leadford, and not allowing herself to be a doormat.
ONLY A DUKE WOULD DARE has good pacing, and is a quick and enjoyable read. I really liked Victor and Thea as a couple. Reverend Brentwood is a weak and selfish man, and the villain, Leadford, is truly despicable. Both are dispatched in good fashion, making for a satisfactory conclusion. ONLY A DUKE WOULD DARE is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone.
I will dispense with summarising the book, as the blurb tells pretty much the whole story. And while ONLY A DUKE WOULD DARE is the second book in the Seductive Scoundrels series, it stands entirely on its own. ONLY A DUKE WOULD DARE is a cute, clean Regency romance, with engaging characters and no unpleasantness due to miscommunication or misunderstandings of any sort, which was quite a relief. The villain is a realistically creepy, a lecherous boor, while another character is a poor misguided fool, and I felt that the latter was dealt with in a rather creative, believable, and satisfying manner.
In spite of a rather slow pace, ONLY A DUKE WOULD DARE is a light, quick, and enjoyable read. Collette Cameron’s writing is more restrained than what we are used to, with fewer extravagant flourishes, and although there are some minor editorial issues, the writing is solid. Towards the end, we get a glimpse of who will star in the next instalment and I must say I am quite looking forward to it.
Only a duke would dare to return to the home that holds painful memories and requests the vicar perform his wedding ceremony…with no bride in mind. A daughter, long confined by the restrictions of her vicar father, is torn between her family duty or following her heart. Collette Cameron writes a sweet tale of love crossing classes and that some things are not what they seem. Ms. Cameron’s unique writing makes our hero’s determination and our heroine’s angst jump from the pages. And the villain….I could feel the slime rolling off him {shudder}. From a drunk duke at the start of our story to the final happily ever after this is a tale that will have you laughing, crying, and wanting to hurt specific characters.
Only a Duke Would Dare: A Recency Romance (Seductive Scoundrels Book 2)
The love story of Victor and Theodosia. Theodosia 's father is being blackmail by his assistance. He want Theodosia as his wife, she cannot stand him. Victor return home with one ideal to have his mother help him find a Duchess but he find his Duchess and it's Theodosia. Can he save her and help her father? Great story.
This was an ok novella. I would consider it safe, even though the H has a bad reputation as a rake. Although he revealed in his inner monologue that he didn't frequent brothels, he also admitted that he planned on leaving whomever he married in the country while he went back to womanizing in London. Of course he sees the errors of his plans later on and promises to be faithful to the h, but this kind of hero isn't really my favourite kind.
