The normally cooperative crime families are at each other’s throats, an unseen force manipulating them from behind the scenes like a sinister chess master.
Nick Morgan and Bron Broome are the only ones who know what’s going on, and they've got a tough convince the crime lords a demon’s playing them like chumps before the whole town goes up like a powder keg.
And if that’s not enough, they’ve both got their own Nick needs to get a handle on his powerful but unpredictable talent before he blows up every bit of magic he encounters, and Bron’s got herself a new mentor—an ex-Hollywood scream queen who might be more deeply connected with the L.A. situation than anybody suspects.
If Nick and Bron—with a little help from a certain Bay Area mage—can’t get to the bottom of the situation soon, there won’t be enough of L.A.’s magical scene left to salvage.
R. L. King is the author of the Amazon-bestselling urban fantasy series The Alastair Stone Chronicles.
When not doing her best to make life difficult for her characters, she works as a software technical writer for a large Silicon Valley database company.
She also freelances for Catalyst Game Labs, publisher of the popular roleplaying game Shadowrun, where she's contributed fiction and game material to numerous sourcebooks and one full-length adventure, "On the Run," which was included as part of the 2012 Origins-Award-winning "Runners' Toolkit."
Her first novel in the Shadowrun universe, "Borrowed Time," was published in Spring 2015. She's working on her second Shadowrun novel, "Veiled Extraction," which will be released in late 2016 or early 2017.
When not writing or working, she enjoys hanging out with her very understanding spouse and her small herd of cats, and watching way too much Doctor Who.
Love this series. Nick & Bron finally get to meet Alastair Stone, albeit briefly, just before he heads off to Africa on an assignment he cannot postpone. Will not elaborate on this, so no spoilers. In the meantime, however, Nick's grandfather has been teaching him how to control his wild talent so as to limit the possibility of his being a danger to other magical folks, while Bron is busying herself with a new trainer. But things have a way of happening, regardless of whether you're ready for them or not. Sometimes you just have to dive right in & hope for the best. One thing Nick does have in his favor is his ability to read people & situations. It's what makes him a good fortune teller. And Bron is very good at putting 2 & 2 together. These 2 assets, combined with their passion, integrity, their connection to each other and how they combine their talents is what makes them strong...even though individually their talents have a long way to go to develop. This concludes the trilogy, but I'm hoping not the series, as I'm so looking forward to Book #4.
I have been waiting for this release and I was not disappointed. Nick is getting to know his family with a little f, not the big 'F' while Bron is connecting to hers back east and embracing her magic and re-entering the apprentice world. The story unfolds and a familiar character drops in for a bit. Wasn't the one I thought it would be. Can they sort out the Families' drama with a big F and find the Big Bad? Can they save LA? Can they wait for back up? I can't spoil it for you, I'm sorry but the trilogy is worth the read and the last book is the best yet.
Excellent expansion of the magical world we love in the Stone series.
This series is growing on me. I'm sad that Nick is a wild talent only. But that's necessary or we'd have another Alaister Stone, who is amazing, but we don't need two. RL King has such a vast imagination which is the reason this series is so good with expanding the Stone universe into new and different plot lines. I'm excited to see where these characters go.
Great story! Love how Bron and Nick work together, learn together, and fight the bad guys off! Surprise cameo was awesome! Glad Nick is getting a good grip on his talent and that they both are beginning to work more with their families. Cannot wait to see Bron come into her own, magically. Great installment in the series! And there's a surprise cameo!
Nick and Bron are great!Truly upstanding people with bravery and character in spades! The surrounding characters remind me of old world gentlemen gangsters and and the 'scream queens' are a tough as nails and remind me a great deal of a Grandma of mine - maybe a little less salty, but still a force of nature! I hope we get to see more of the 'dynamic duo'!
The promised crossover has started! Bron and Nick go up against the demon as he gains power and sets the crime lords against each other, so they go to Dr. Alastair Stone for help!
Ms. King always writes a great book and this was no exception. I love the Alastair Stone series and it was wonderful to have him part of this book. Great story, amazing characters, fascinating plot all make this a must read book.
This series becomes more interesting with each book. I love the author, so I gave this a chance. I almost didn’t finish book one of this series, but the tide turned and I began to enjoy it. I really like how Al showed up in this one. As always, he is my favorite 💜.
