This is such a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about watercolor! The pages are beautiful and interactive. Very simple to understand. Perfect for anyone who is thinking about starting to harness a new skill.
These designs are gorgeous. I read this just to admire the art, not to create any of it myself, but the instructions seem very clear for people with different levels of experience, and I would recommend this to someone looking for a guide to nature watercolors.
I picked this book up almost on a whim while picking up other items at a local craft store. I've been wanting to get into watercolor painting, but the other educational resources (1 book and 1 video set and 1 online class that I cancelled) left me feeling overwhelmed or not feeling good enough right at the beginning. Kolbie focuses on having fun and getting lost in your creativity, but somehow she slowly transforms you into a precent decent watercolorist! She has a one-little-piece-at-a-time approach that makes that step achievable. And through a series of small goals, you create several complete paintings. She has an active FB group for those who want to engage, free videos on YouTube, and affordable self-paced online courses. I highly recommend this book and her other resources.
Excellent projects that feature a variety of landscapes. Would be good for a beginner with a little experience. Looking forward to trying more projects and learning more about landscape painting.
I discovered Kolbie Blume randomly on Pinterest and fell in love with her art and her videos. I then signed up for her two 10-day challenges which was life changing and filled up all my days with beautiful art. And then I finally tracked down her books and got them. I think doing it in that order was actually the best fit for me and allowed me to hear her voice as I read the book and completed the projects in this book. I highly recommend doing it this way. I liked the seascapes one a little more than this one, just for the projects but both of Kolbie's books are awesome.
I did not like this book at all. Well, there were 2 projects in it that I liked..the rest, most of them were really amateurish. I am not a pro at this, not even past the beginner stage, but I like a challenge and I want something that looks good. Some of the projects in this book looked positively cartoonish...and they weren't cartoons.
This book is full of beautiful paintings that are made accessible through step by step instruction. I love it that I could sit down with this book and create a magical landscape in a short period of time (usually 15-30 minutes!). Also, Kolbie Blume is lessons are about embracing the imperfections of nature and art so it's very relaxing to do these paintings!
As a beginner in watercolour I enjoyed this book very much. Instructions were clear and projects were the right size for me starting out. I could pick and choose the level of difficulty and found the projects weren't overwhelming like some other "beginner" watercolour books. Highly recommend.
So far, book is OK. I put this in the category of how to art book that it would be nice to be able to preview before purchasing. Just not that easy to do at present. There are a lot of helpful tips for the beginner. There is a good explanation of how to handle a brush, wet on wet and wet on dry techniques. How to do color blending, do some trees and flowers. My main fault with the book is the author's choice of paint shades to use, specifically, pyrelene violet. I am in the beginning spectrum. I have student grade paints. Pyrelene violet is an artist grade color, only available in a few paint lines. I tried to mix it myself, but my shade always comes out lighter than the artist's. Overall, this is a minor complaint, but does add to the "not being able to get a painting that looks as good as in the book" feeling. Otherwise, as in all how-to painting books, there are some projects I like a lot, some I didn't. Some came out better than I expected, some didn't. So far, worth a work thru, since I bought the book. Don't know that I would have had I been able to flip thru it first. The projects, especially the last ones in the book, are just too whimsical for me. Note: I am a beginning watercolorist. Started within the past year. Have used other how to watercolor books, U tube videos, and Pinterest.
