When his ancient druid master falls critically ill, Colin goes on a plane-walking quest to find a cure. Can the journeyman druid rescue the god of healing in time to save his oldest friend?
I thought that learning magic from a druid master was tough, but that was before I started taking lessons from an insane quasi-god.
For six long months I’ve been suffering under Click’s tutelage, boning up on my magic skills so I can survive the wrath of several Celtic gods and find a cure for my druid mentor, Finnegas.
It’s my fault that the old man is hanging on by a thread, and I’m determined to save his life.
Between surviving Click’s batshit crazy magic lessons and being harassed by the huldufólk, I’ve been trying to track down the Celtic god of healing. Only Dian Cécht can heal my master—and, he’s the only god Click trusts to do the trick.
Unfortunately, DC has been damned hard to find. And just when we finally got a solid lead, Loki’s brother showed up to throw a wrench in the gears.
Okay, so I may have killed Loki’s nephew. It’s not like he didn’t have it coming.
Bottom line? I might have to fight an army of fire and frost giants to save Finn’s life.
It’s a good thing I brought my wading boots, ‘cause shit’s about to get deep…
M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.
As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.
Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.
I think that you will find most of the reviews are five star and suggest browsing through them to have a complete sense of the series. I did not before my rewrites and and now can not . A (rogue?) 🙂 Goodreads tech does not "Allow" me to see other reviews, does not "Allow" me to see my commenter names, does not "Allow" me to remove my last lurker, sometimes grays out my "like" buttons and never responds to my queries. 🤔🤔🤔
I closed my pages and removed all lurkers but one. A (rogue?) Goodreads tech removed my friend button for Dr Susan Hamilton (a Maths professor at University of Tennessee?). She had posted nothing for the two years since her friend request and has not responded to five requests that she unfriend me. 🤔 It would be sad, if she finds me that fascinating. I am just not that interesting, as my siblings will attest. 🤗🤗
It is the typical case of writing one little brutally negative review of a "poorly written salute to the January 6, 2021 hero"' and suddenly my being a communist is a bad thing. Have they no life? 😊
For more Goodreads,, read my review of "Battleship Leviathan", a bad space adventure or Powers of the Earth (a poorly written salute to the January 6, 2021 hero) and the comments by a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi and US patriot).
To Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 Don't be a numpty. Be a smarty. Come and join the Communist Party.
It is still strange to me how loudly US patriots (Marjorie Taylor Green, Tucker Carlson and Claes Rees Jr, for example) cheer on Putin and his Russia. He has threatened their own USA several times with nuclear war and the UN has finally acknowledged the Russian policy of mass rape, with victims of gang rape ranging from an 80 year old woman to a four year old girl. The number of gold bars must be truly staggering. In any case.
GLORY TO UKRAINE !!! and GLORY TO THE HEROES !!
The book is a short one, which covers the story well enough but I wish that it had been longer.
If this is your introduction to the Druidverse, I suggest starting with book one. While every book is solid as a standalone, there are many relationships and struggles that lead up to this book. That flavor will add more weight to his quest in this one.
The druid has gotten a little older over the series and the main character seems to have changed more than the series arc would demand. The writing seems to have begun depicting his emotions in a slightly wooden way or the character has become more rigid.
The character also seems to display some emotions that are unconvincing. The search for a cure for his dying mentor, is very important for his own survival and his mental health. He has lost most of the people important to him and as the last druid, reminds me of David Tenant's "Doctor" just before his death.
The Doctor's loneliness, the loss of all his companions and his desperation seem a close mirror to the emotions of Colin, as he is about to lose the last person who understands his entire life journey. It is a sad book with very final stakes.
As I said before, it is a short book. That was the only flaw to the book. It still stands far above other urban fantasy that I have encountered lately. Of course the worlds of Dresden, the Heartstrikers and the Junkyard Druid all share first place for me.
It is refreshing to read and enjoy genre fiction again. The standard low end US science fiction was destroying my taste for all print fiction. I did see a creeping sloppiness and unnecessary racism in Waking Magic and that is a bad sign for current urban fantasy.
I think that science fiction as bad as the new standard, must be chosen by publishers for the systematic desensitization of readers to blatant racist tropes, White Nationalist themes (I meant patriotic US, of course), rigid gender roles and glorification of the fascist world view.
YouTube channels Tom Nicholas, Novara Media, Ryan Chapman, Vlad Vexler, Renegade Cut, Philosophy Tube, Useful Idiots, Second Thought, Owen Jones or Then and Now would have a better idea of what underlies the selection criteria than I. Anyway, it is just a stray thought.
Since the bulk of print science fiction is so awful, I have been watching science fiction rather than reading it. Even the low end print fantasy seems to be the equal to much of fantasy video, which is odd.
The streaming services are hit or miss with fantasy but with science fiction, their offerings are usually better written and more entertaining than the bulk of current US print science fiction. The bonus feature of Netflix is a large collection of multinational productions.
YouTube introduced me to the documentary and all the other special interest channels. The advertisements for the dedicated educational sites on the documentary channels was a nice discovery. The first educational video site that I tried was Curiosity Stream/Nebula. It was good investment at a cost of about $15 USD for a yearly subscription. I think that they are worth a look.
The book tubers were a real surprise. The reader community that these channels foster is friendly, thoughtful and excited by all bookish things. 😍😍 I recommend any reader visit several book channels and I included several below.
My YouTube picks of the moment. Brittany Page, Odyssey Ancient History, Anna Cramling, Art Deco, 2Cellos, Beyond the Brick, Mythic Concepts, Crecganford, Book Furnace, Tom Nicholas, Dr Becky, History with Kayleigh, Dr Steve Keen, Boat Time.
As for Goodreads, please consider treating this site as potentially hostile. 😐
I minimized my profile information, I exchange emails not messages, removed all lurkers but one 🙂 and accept that no response to query or complaint is forthcoming. 😊
Seriously, please protect yourself. May we all enjoy Good Reading. 😊😊😊

For being 11 books into a series, it surprises me that I can still be intrigued, or better yet...surprised. This book has one doozy of a twist at the end (but no spoilers) so that was completely unexpected.
We see Colin, still seemingly getting into trouble no matter where he goes. That boy has a talent. Anyway, there is more of Click, some Loki and a very very sad scene with Finnegas.
So, if you are already in for 10 books....what is 1 more? And, because of the twist, I actually went to look up when book 12 is out. Lucky me, it comes out on December 22, 2020. That is really good, because I am not known for my patience :)
Your Dad is proud of you, I know this in my heart.
This book was very special and well crafted. I personally know this story from experience. I hope other readers truly take this story to heart! I wish you and your family the best. Thank you again for sharing...
Colin is desperately trying to save Finn who is now in a state of stasis. Click is there to help out and be a substitute mentor while Colin works to find the Dr. who can save Finn. Blasting through obstacle after obstacle fighting Gods, demigods and giants, getting help from the Valkyrie, he is led on this mission that to save Finn. Magic battles abound in almost every chapter and Colin finds that the ones he trusts are not necessarily trustworthy. Will he find this physician in time? or will Finn just fade away. The ending is no ending as this series goes and we must wait to see what happens next to our young hero. Excellent story as usual and can't wait until the next one.
Fantastic read! Exciting story with lots of action and heart pounding moments. How can one poor Druid have so many enemies after him? One of those book you hate to put down. Colin’s journey sees new allies and old friends aid him on his noble quest. Once again his “friends” love to take shits at him but it’s all in sarcastic fun. Poor Colin gets a gift from his mentor Finn that flips his word upside down. I can’t wait for the next instalment. I read this using my KU subscription.
Again M.D pulls on your emotions and this time he has attached the rope to a bullet train. From the start you are engrossed in the story and read like a starving man. Colin is on a quest and it HAS to be fulfilled and what is on the line is a VIP that he has depended upon and learned from for a long time. This is a series everyone NEEDS to read.
I've said after the previous Colin book and I'm saying it again, I don't like the supernatural Colin stories. I read them because I really liked the first books when Fallon, Hemi and Bells were regulars. This one was like a passing of the torch, so we'll have to see what the future brings.
Finnegas is in a coma and slowly dying. The only one who can possibly save him is Diancecht Celtic god of healing. So Colin must go to the land of the giants where he is being held. Wonderful story telling by Mr Massey. As he brings together Colin, Click, Bells, Crowley, a Valkyrie and Loki. All the humor and action that I've come to expect from the Junkyard Druid.
Best one yet. Totally awesome. Bringing Colin, click and Rowley together was a stroke of genius. Love time magic! Need to see way more of that! Would also love a certain she wolf to become a regular member of the team. Well done sir! Thank you for another fantastic book! Ps. Please write quicker...
Another great book in the druid series featuring Colin McCool, this was one of the better books allowing Colin to mature in his arcane side more than his hyde side. This story despite its setting brings in some old friends as well as some new ones. Enjoyable quirky characters make this book series enjoyable.
This series keeps getting better and better. Mr. Massey spins a story where the main character grows and evolves as a person . I found myself absorbed in the plot and choices that were made .so much so I was upset at the choices the characters made . Very few books or authors can get that level of engagement in a reader.
Not sure how MD Massey does it! ALL his novels are full of wonderful ideas, twists, countertwists, fun, action, great storytelling, life, AWESOME READS short. Reading each avidly, waiting impatiently for the next one to come! Highly recommended for all of us who love magic and wits!
So you get pulled in with everything going on Colin is in a furious race to save Finn all fighting and anger and freezing in Iceland with click training.? Colin so up down and tears I guess that’s good if your the author to bring your readers to tears when the action/s can affect so much emotion please hurry I can’t deal with sit down son we need to talk!
This series has been a bit of a roller coaster in both a good and bad way. Some of the early books had a lot of fluff and felt a bit disjointed at times. That said, the books have really tightened up towards the end. This one was solid with very little filler. It's been a fun ride and I'm a little sad that I'm nearing the end.
Maybe no absolutely the coolest book in the series. Every page was worth the wait and it was a great journey. Best book I read in all of kindle sci_fi in last few years. U will not regret getting this book!!!!!
I could not put the book down once I started. Great humour as usual really liked the mix of norse and celtic mythology and different interpretations of well known characters. Can't wait for the next one in the series and that ending I did not expect that
I never thought you could improve on perfection!!!
Colin McCool is a character that gets more each new book. Waiting for the next one is like waiting for summer so you can have that big ice cream sundae at Dairy Queen. The best supernatural series ever. A must read!!!
Just finished and had to trap some cleanex. To go above and painfully beyond to save Fin... You will have to read to find out. Definitely will keep my eyes open for the next book.
That's how you write a story! Ever thing you expect from a Colin McCool book and more. The snark the humor the heartbreak and the twists! Wow! I'm so excited for the next book!
Massey continues to write an absolute thrilling and engaging story 11 books in! Fantastic read. The world continues to expand as this story arc narrows. I truly hope this series never ends.
This book was so much fun. MD Massey's Junkyard Druid series has evolved by leaps and bounds and this one has been his most fun and exciting outing yet. Norse gods, demons, undead, valkyries, trolls, elves, and one powerful yet put-upon young druid all make for an amazing adventure!
This books completes a story arc and propels Colin into a new stage of his life. His efforts made me cry in sympathy. Colin has to deal with dwjbdling hope and grief. He grows and matures but at such a great cost. A gut wrenching plot. Do not miss this one, read it.
Colin just keeps digging deeper holes and doing dumber things. Or does he? Massey continues to entertain and subtly educate as Colin grows before our eyes. If you haven't read books 1-10 yet, why not? If you have, the ride keeps twisting!
Another good book in the Junkyard Druid series. I keep hoping our young druid learns to look before he leaps, as the stakes keep getting higher. But what is a good fantasy character if they can't take a good beating, or don't lead with their thick heads? Harry Dresden, for example.
